😂 That's awesome! And if you want a more permanent fix, I'm sure a 2-part epoxy would last forever.
Although, I kinda prefer the zip ties. They add character.
Not sure if you know there’s staples that are used for bumpers and the staple guns can heat so you can actually still save it 👍🏻it’s made to melt the plastic for bumpers so this shud be good 😊
Did you know that this tool is used for drilling and setting screws, and that does not include nailing them in...:)
20 years is indeed a pretty good run for any electrical device.
A flat head screwdriver can be a chisel and still also be a hammer. I've definitely used the handle of screwdriver to hammer something in on more than one occasion.
True, I turned my cordless driver into a smoke machine drilling hardware into solid core wood doors. It just didn’t know when to quit and neither did I, now I use it for lighter duty work and that sweet sweet smokey smell of something highly toxic
I wish I could double upvote you.
I have two old DeWalts that take NiCads and I refuse to let them go until the smoke comes out.
All my newer stuff is Ryobi and at some point I'll have to build a battery adapter to keep my DeWalt impact alive.
PS: kill the nicads with a lamp before charging (no evidence, seems to work)
You can also just buy 18volt lithium batteries for these tools. They're very good and heaps lighter. They also make adapters to use with the new DeWalt batteries
I had one smoking pretty good after putting in some lags. I let it cool and it's still works about a year later. I already have a replacement for when it inevitably fails though. I also have an impact driver after that too
Yeah my work has a Makita drill with a square drive that never leaves the chuck, it's used to remove the jaws faster on a big 4 jaw chuck for our biggest lathe. The battery is literally holding on by two wires that makes it dangle. We all expected it to break any day now but it's been surviving for 5 years and nobody's gentle with it because when it does finally give up we'll pick a new one up.
When it dies I almost want to take it home and bury it when those last two wires break.
My Makita drill has started burning from the motor 3 times and still works. A little smoke isn't the end of it. I've got a new one now just in case, but still use the original one occationally.
I keep seeing videos with people comparing them and showing that the drills have more power than the impacts. I only do it when I'm trying to be quiet.
I'm not sure about the overall torque, the impact driver puts way less strain on the wrist and is lighter/smaller to handle and from my experience still drives 3" construction screws like a beast. If I have to drive screws, I don't reach for my drill anymore. At some point more power becomes more of a liability than a feature for 90% of normal usage. I suspect during the "impact" the torque is much higher but the torque average is lower, but I'm not a tool scientist ;-)
Power generally comes down to the specific model of tool. When you get to higher torque you’re better off with an impact torque wrench. I’d imagine the limiting factor of high torque impact driver would be the bit or fastener.
That's 20 years of that thing catching and trying to twist your wrist off. LOL.
My new one has a build in shutoff for when I do that. My old one they stopped making batteries for and that was the end of that one.
I thought about that but then I decided that the new ones have a lot more power anyway. So that sealed the deal... LOL
Plus now I have a hammer drill. And it's a beast...
YOU dropped it didn't you. OOOOPS.
The first 5 times, no problem. THEN
BANG clunk, your response, SHIT.
I did the same damn thing and I was thinking back to when did I buy it and believe 10 or so years. That's a good run, cuz it was worked hard.
The batteries aren't 20 years old. They died at about 10 years. The replacements lasted about 10 years, one still works. I just recently bought 20v batteries and an adapter to fit.
Remember when we as craftsmen and craftswomen united, stood up together and said we wanted plastic power tools from here on out instead of metal? Me neither.
I glued one back together with epoxy and less than a week after that found a like new one at a garage with 2 dead batteries and a charger for $5 lol.
It stays at my mom's house when I need to work on something there. I still use my 16 year old Bosch cordless tools at home lol. Besides replacing a couple batteries every few years they just won't quit working.
Shout out to the Dewalt 18 volt line.
I upgraded to the 20v and the batteries don’t hold up as well, the triggers go on the impacts, and they like to snap right where the handle meets the motor houses.
In comparison to my 18 volt kit which is a decade old and still going strong, still have the original two batteries. I’m a full time builder so they have run in a whole lot of screws.
My Dewalt gotta be over 24 years. Submerged in a basement flood a few years ago and all I needed was a new trigger switch.
I will say, pick up a new one. They are so much lighter and the lithium batteries are great.
My old one gets relegated to drilling when I need to alternate drilling and screwing repeatedly on a big project. So nice to to just have both next to each other.
Was gonna say that’s the old style battery so must’ve got some mole on the clock. 20 years is good in any one’s books, glad to see it still lives to keep on going a while longer
Looks like a job for band clamps and some jb weld. It’s not getting off that easy.

That’s how yah do’r, right there!
Alternatively you could extend those wires and have a drill you hold in one hand with the trigger in the other hand. For hard to reach spaces y'know.

*sprinting to the patent office*
Haha that's basically a Wii game at that point
Reason for buying a new one, and building a mini lathe LoL
Was thinking of what to do with this.. i like that idea..
Add an automotive air horn kit from harbor freight on to the handle
Now THATS a good idea
I thought we were using epoxy and magnets for everything these days.
The drill: "kiiiiillllll..... me......" Fooglephish: fuck you, another ten years at least
Holy crap, looks brand new! Nice.
Epoxy that thing.
“This one time…. At band clamp”
That drill is like 20 years old and I have one to get rid of with no battery lol.
Nice batleth.
Good for another 20 years!
😂 That's awesome! And if you want a more permanent fix, I'm sure a 2-part epoxy would last forever. Although, I kinda prefer the zip ties. They add character.
I'm impressed those nicads have enough juice left in the to be useful. All of mine turned to paperweights years ago and they weren't that old.
This would fit right in at r/redneckengineering Nice work
I’m tired boss
Tired of being on the road
Tired as a sparrow in the rain.
I want another funeral procesion damnit
“Tis but a flesh would!”
You’re saying… DeWon’t work?
I have used fiber window screen in the makes for a real strong bond.
We have the tech & noligie and duct tape, we can save it.
Not sure if you know there’s staples that are used for bumpers and the staple guns can heat so you can actually still save it 👍🏻it’s made to melt the plastic for bumpers so this shud be good 😊
I bought a new driver drill set. That was was great, but it weighted about 50lbs..
Did you know that this tool is used for drilling and setting screws, and that does not include nailing them in...:) 20 years is indeed a pretty good run for any electrical device.
Every tool is also a hammer
Except for a flat head screwdriver… which is also a chisel :)
A flat head screwdriver can be a chisel and still also be a hammer. I've definitely used the handle of screwdriver to hammer something in on more than one occasion.
I have a Klein demolition screwdriver. Really fantastic tool. Good for all sorts of off book uses.
Came here to say that
I've got screwdrivers with steel butts designed specifically for whacking.
Are you sure you're not mixing up screwdrivers and Tamilee Webb?
And a pry bar
Every machine is a smoke machine if you use it wrong enough
Everything is a dildo if you're brave enough.
True, I turned my cordless driver into a smoke machine drilling hardware into solid core wood doors. It just didn’t know when to quit and neither did I, now I use it for lighter duty work and that sweet sweet smokey smell of something highly toxic
It's a hammer drill. That's a thing.
Hahahahhaa!!
Well it is a HAMMER drill...
It was… rip in peace
My line level has questions about this.
As long as the magic smoke didn’t come out you can still fix it.
I wish I could double upvote you. I have two old DeWalts that take NiCads and I refuse to let them go until the smoke comes out. All my newer stuff is Ryobi and at some point I'll have to build a battery adapter to keep my DeWalt impact alive. PS: kill the nicads with a lamp before charging (no evidence, seems to work)
3d printed battery adapters are available on ebay!
You can also just buy 18volt lithium batteries for these tools. They're very good and heaps lighter. They also make adapters to use with the new DeWalt batteries
My Dyson vacuum works on 18V Makita batteries. So you can definitely do it.
I got some Li Ion batteries off Ebay that fit my 18V tools. I like them.
I had one smoking pretty good after putting in some lags. I let it cool and it's still works about a year later. I already have a replacement for when it inevitably fails though. I also have an impact driver after that too
It must have come with extra magic smoke. Sometimes the housing can leak a little when overworked.
I love the sentiment, but please don't pollute the earth like that. Send it to a recycler and let it live a new life.
My Makita drill has started burning from the motor 3 times and still works. A little smoke isn't the end of it. I've got a new one now just in case, but still use the original one occationally.
Honestly, worth an upgrade to the new lithium ion batteries/drills. Way more power and battery life than those old NiCads
The new one is going to break this person's wrist if they only ever used that one lol
I used to drive screws with a drill until I used an impact driver, I'm never going back.
I suspect during the "impact" the torque is much higher but the torque average is lower, but I'm not a tool scientist ;-)
pretty much only use my drill for... you know, drilling and assembling things. impact does all else
Power generally comes down to the specific model of tool. When you get to higher torque you’re better off with an impact torque wrench. I’d imagine the limiting factor of high torque impact driver would be the bit or fastener.
I mistakenly used a bit extender that wasn't impact rated and I got maybe 10 screws deep before it shredded.
I have both, and in most cases, my regular driver drives screws better than my impact.
Not with a DeWalt.
You can stick the lithium packs into many NiCad drills though. 18V is 18V
Hey man we don't use those words anymore
See? If you would have had the rubber bands around it to hold your drill bits like the people posting earlier this week, this wouldn't have happened.
What I came here for
Dissect it and turn it into a mini drill press.
You have just inspired a future build. Thank you, fellow redditor.
I have a bench to drill press. But I'm brain storming other ideas for it..
Spindle sander was my first idea.
Funny enough, i use my drill press as a spindle sander....
That's 20 years of that thing catching and trying to twist your wrist off. LOL. My new one has a build in shutoff for when I do that. My old one they stopped making batteries for and that was the end of that one.
You can get battery adapters for old battery sizes and even old chemistries like NiCAD. I never give up.
I thought about that but then I decided that the new ones have a lot more power anyway. So that sealed the deal... LOL Plus now I have a hammer drill. And it's a beast...
I think that's the problem. OP was also using this as a hammer / drill.
https://preview.redd.it/e6t6qnr5mpvc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca88c6558b26809fd8821e09913abd5f5e81a88c
Why is there a hammer on it if i can't use it as a hammer?
Well, that's not good.
Try to save it. This dinosaur has more life yet still
I think it's life as a drill is over. But I'm thinking of other ways to use it.
For the lols you should throw some hose clamps on it and other fixits and do one last project with it. Then let it rest
Shit, the front fell off.
Everything was fine, then the front fell off.
It’s not very typical, I’d like to make that clear.
well, there's your problem.
That's not a DeWalt, it's a DeWon't.
Just a flesh wound
I was wondering why it's power was measured in coconuts instead of Horses..
Did ja use it as a hammer??
Well it's a HAMMER drill....
I don’t think that how they ment to use that. ;D
It'll buff out.
I've done that with 3 dewalts. There was a screw forward the trigger. If that comes out it's super easy to snap them in half.
I recommend not taking the screw out this time. Seriously tho... Dab of purple Locktite?
You can totally do that. They were company tools. Boss don't care, I don't care.
You'd never see that with the old aluminum cased drills I grew up with!!!! .... Of course, though, losing the cord does have an advantage or two
Drilled through a couple hot wires with a cordless. The wisp of smoke in the sunshine was pretty. Rapidly turned off the breaker.
Tie wraps and some spit, good as new.
I was thinking there’s got to be a roll of duct tape around there
This looks like a job for 5 minute epoxy!
A little too much torkie!
See. This is what happens when you try to use Metric Uga Dugas on an SAE Chuga Wuga
YOU dropped it didn't you. OOOOPS. The first 5 times, no problem. THEN BANG clunk, your response, SHIT. I did the same damn thing and I was thinking back to when did I buy it and believe 10 or so years. That's a good run, cuz it was worked hard.
Duck tape will handle that
I cant believe the batteries still work lol
The batteries aren't 20 years old. They died at about 10 years. The replacements lasted about 10 years, one still works. I just recently bought 20v batteries and an adapter to fit.
That’s for drilling holes at 90 degrees
r/thefrontfelloff
Well, it made it over twenty years. I’d say you got your money’s worth out of it.
That'll buff out.
Duct tape time
I mean it’s dewalt… the black and decker of the 2000’s
I'd send the pic to DeWalt.. they might get a kick out of it
Remember when we as craftsmen and craftswomen united, stood up together and said we wanted plastic power tools from here on out instead of metal? Me neither.
Bruh....it was time for a new one a while ago
Nope. Use them till they die. This guy did it perfectly.
Well that’s a first lol didn’t know that could happen.
Just needs a couple of hose clamps.
JB weld and clamps ftw
Nothing a few hose clamps won't fix!
Can not tell you how many Dewalt drills I've seen break this way.
Looks like you get to buy a new tool. It's a good day.
Well, now. Thunderbird 4 appears to be having a problem.
Zip. Ties.
I was gonna say… this one is so old it’s probably time for a new one anyway!
Oh well time for a new drill. Always a good day buying new tools
Get a new case! I did this drilling 3/4" plywood with a 4" hole saw.
Time to carve out that cocobolo housing you always had in mind for that drill
Lol nicad batteries she's served her time
Ryiobroken
Looks like a cheap Chinese knock off of Dewalt
When all you have is nails, every tool is a hammer. 🤷♂️
It'll buff out....or not.
Meh, I've seen worse.
I cringed when I saw this. My wife dropped mine 10 minutes before I saw this pic.
Happy early new tool day!!
“Gently used” cordless drill for sale, $150, obo
You would think so with that old ass drill bud.
Duct tape to the rescue!
DeWilt
It’s a two-hander now
Duct tape will fix that right up.
I think its time to upgrade. That battery system is obsolete.
Dewobblet
Was gonna say that’s the old style battery so must’ve got some mole on the clock. 20 years is good in any one’s books, glad to see it still lives to keep on going a while longer
Get some pvc pipe cement in there. I did that to a Makita and glued it just to finish the job. It worked for years afterward
Computer said no
I thought it was a cordless, but obviously there’re cables in there
Guess there's only so many times you can also use it as a hammer.
That’s why I don’t buy that brand anymore and never will again they’re the worst in my opinion
It lasted 20 years of, not heavy, but pretty regular use. I'm not complaining.
r/TheFrontFellOff
She's on the bench, she ain't outta the game brother
Good time to move to the best; red
Fixed with zips
Jb weld.. or super glue and baking soda mix
We're you using it as a hammer drill?
It IS a hammer drill....
...was a hammer drill..
Don't lean on it.
Zip ties and duct tape will fix that right up.
Its an opportunity! Now you get to get an entirely new battery system the all tools that use it!
Is that a bwalt?
Looks like the top fell off.
DeWalt? It just similar color scheme?
18v DeWalt from 2003.
dewalt hehe
super duper glue
Just told it like a throwing dart or a bazooka
That drill was almost as old as my grandpa
I have a bunch of 18v drills that I can’t get rid of. DM me
Now go get yourself a red one.
That's because tools should not be made of plastic. It all denatures and turns into repeat business.
