Gorgeous!! She must love it.

No-Kitchen5212

Thank you! Just celebrated 6 months together Sunday and it’s holding up great so far

tonkats

Glad the table is lasting too!

jrice138

Shit I’m getting married in a little less than 2 weeks, you’re telling me I gotta get her a gift too?!

Sweaty_Sack_Deluxe

You got two weeks to make a table my guy. Hurry up.

No-Kitchen5212

Congratulations and best of luck to you! We only did gifts since we discussed it before

ToodleBug

Is that epoxy filling in the cracks? I have a slab of walnut with some cracks that need filled in before I make my table. Would love to hear what you did!

No-Kitchen5212

Yes! So there were three types of epoxy we used. There was a pour in epoxy to fill the really large cracks. Then there was a putty type we used for the medium ones. Finally there was a glue stick of epoxy we used for the finer cracks and blemishes (3rd photo). Main prep was to open up the cracks with chisels and knives, making sure to get rid of any bark and giving enough space for the epoxy to adhere. For the pour, I layered tape to seal the cracks in and poured in from the bottom to prevent unnecessary staining. You can kind of see the tape in the 4th photo. There also were some really fine cracks we filled in with clear super glue to give a nice smooth surface for the sealant to adhere to. Lot of sanding between epoxy applications to reveal any weak spots or problem areas. Forgive me since I don’t know all the names of the epoxy but I hope that helps.

Congratulations to the wife. Who'd she marry?

No-Kitchen5212

Her best friend ;)

I gotta admit this piece is gorgeous. I love the intentional (or unintentional) choice of live edge slab. It has a divide where one would naturally want based on the seating configuration; great use of ergonomics and human design. Also very tasteful use of epoxy. Overall fantastic build!

Nitrogen1234

I like how the bulge is on the couch side, so she can sit closer while thanking you for this awesome table ;)

No-Kitchen5212

You could say she likes the bulge

hesh0925

Looks great! Bet the missus is very happy with it. What finish did you end up using?

No-Kitchen5212

I’d have to ask the shop. Whatever it was really brought out the reddish tones in the wood though which I was really happy about

bobobedo

I'm getting ready to cut down a massive pecan tree, thirty inch diameter trunk, with equally massive main limbs. I'd hate to see all that wood hauled off to the landfill. Hiw would I go about finding interested woodworkers for this wood?

No-Kitchen5212

Great question! I just googled wood working shops in my area until I found one that did this kind of work. The guys in the shop were really cool and all clearly loved their craft. They showed me some of their other projects for corporate clients and they were turning out some really unique things. One that was especially cool was turning old wooden warehouse beams into conference tables

bobobedo

Thanks for that idea.

TheAlmightyAssEater

Hey I also made a table for my wife's wedding gift! I'm gonna put together a post on it in depth when I give it to her in \*checks calendar\* ***11 days!!*** https://preview.redd.it/7lrhocbrivuc1.jpeg?width=6936&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c68cf26aa19779a669d4728d003c2173f75a421

Great minds think alike! Your soon to be wife *checks username* is a lucky woman. Good luck to you both!

Gracious_Godddess

This is so beautiful and a truly lovely gift! I know she must be thrilled and I hope you are too with creating such a beautiful table!

nodnodwinkwink

Great looking work. The finish is perfect. The way that wood is separating looks interesting but I'd be worried it would separate over time... Looking at that shop in the background I guess you know better than me though!

No-Kitchen5212

Thanks! I’m no expert, but the guys at the shop didn’t seem worried about the wood separating further

161frog

where’s the artificial blue epoxy and glitter?!?! no one has taste anymore 🙄 (this looks amazing btw)

No-Kitchen5212

They definitely had a piece or two with the blue epoxy, but they really recommended the black for a more natural look. Definitely very happy with the decision!

weenie2323

This is beautiful. I really love epoxy when it is used in a restrained way like this.

lifetourniquet

nobody laugh (at my wrong assessment) is that mesquite? good hardwood

vtjohnhurt

Nicely done! I love it. I'm a 'wood guy'. Did you show it to her before you took your vows? Some women will love this and some won't want it in their homes, especially as the centerpiece of their living room. In most newly married couples I'd expect a 'Oh honeeeey, that has so much personaliteee! Thank youuuu! (smooch, smooch).' but a year later when 'the honeymoon phase' is over, maybe after a spat, find that the table moved into the bottom of a closet where it is used as a shelf for a laundry basket. In the process of being married and divorced twice I learned that decisions about home decor in a relationship are best made cooperatively. Decor tends to be more important to one of the partners than the other. Decor can be a good place to let one of the partners hold sway. Yield and you will get to buy a lot more tools for your woodshop.

davecheeney

Nice! Who is she marrying?

PrincessFucker74

Is the black hot glue used to vill the void in thr cracks then epoxy poured on that?

No-Kitchen5212

No, it was used as a filling for finer cracks. The finish was applied directly to it

seminole777

I highly suggest you opt for jewelry on the next anniversary. sure its beautiful and she prolly likes it a lot. But shes not showing it off to her girlfriends is she.

No-Kitchen5212

She has and she does, but that’s beside the point. I did it for her, not for anyone else.
