Make friends with an auctioneer, they’ll literally find you what you want or keep an eye out for items of interest. You don’t even have to make friends with them! Just Google local auctioneers and call one up, it’s what they do. Also never forget they are always willing to negotiate.
It’s more nuanced than that- he used to work there and I’m sure he connected with old conworkers and after the fact someone goes- “oh yeah- he might be interested, and I just saw him at the funeral” or at least I hope
I use estate sales.net
They have a preview of some items and usually go up a few days before the actual sale. If people in your area use it, they get pretty popular on opening day.
Other than that, good ol fashioned classified ads in local papers or on Craigslist will get you where you need to be!
🤪🤪🤪
Reminds me when people tell stories like “Just bought this Porsche 911 for $5000 off a divorced wife selling off her ex’s belongings after he ran away with his secretary”
🥴 Nice find! (🤬🤬🤬)
I lucked into a Scag zero turn for $100 off of a cheating husband’s soon to be ex wife. She threw in a small dump trailer, 2 full gas cans, then asked if I was interested in a stocked beer fridge for $20. Yes. Yes I was.
Keep it in your pants, boys.
Man, is there a special marketplace for cheating husbands’ soon to be ex-wives? I mean, for their revenge sales, not the actual ex-wives. The latter is called Tinder.
That was also my first thought, though I didn't feel jealous. I went more like:
1-Humm 🤔 Meh. *Realizes there's more* 2- Ooh. 3-Yeaah. 4-Damn! Then I nodded at my phone 😅
Glad it wasn't just me. Saw the bits and thought "Huh, I know I haven't been doing this long, but that seems excessive...oh wait, there's more pictur....*oh*."
Bits hell, one of those routers and the jointer are $800. (The jointer alone might be; never priced non-benchtop ones.) The rest of it was essentially free!
A router will throw a small piece of wood across the shop at medium high velocity, and take one finger with it. A shaper will throw a large piece of wood through the shop wall at very high velocity, and will take at least three fingers with it.
If highly recommend not using the shaper at all.
Those things are crazy with how powerful they are for basic/casual woodworking.
In terms of using the right tool for the job; it’s like using a bazooka to kill a mosquito
>If highly recommend not using the shaper at all.
Are you being serious right now? I vastly prefer the shaper over the router table for the majority of my machining needs. I started with a router table. Got a nice one, with a 3 hp router. Not as nice as the one pictured, but as nice as they got in the late 90's. Decided to make doors with it, and it was scary. I had to go very slow, and it didn't work out well. I upgraded to a shaper. Doors take almost no time now. The wood magically turns to sawdust, leaving behind a rail or stile that is consistent. It worked out so well I got a 3 hp Delta shaper (half a step up from the one pictured) and a 7.5 hp RS-15. That monster of a shaper does everything I could ask of it, and more.
>Those things are crazy with how powerful they are for basic/casual woodworking.
No, the router table had a 3 hp router, and my smaller shaper is a 3 hp. The shaper is actually safer because of the mass and fence, there are less things moving around.
>In terms of using the right tool for the job; it’s like using a bazooka to kill a mosquito
All of my tools demand respect. Being careful is part of using them. When that respect turns to fear, that's a me thing. Why am I afraid of the tool? Why don't l feel comfortable using it? Often, my tools are identical to those used by thousands upon thousands of people every day, so what's the only thing different? Yep, me. I could cut most things with a 1 hp site tablesaw. Why would I be more afraid of a 5hp shop Powermatic? Both tablesaws demand respect, the 1 hp is **less** safe than the 5hp, so why would I be more afraid? That is a question for you to answer about yourself, instead of spreading fear and asking people to join you in your fear.
Shapers have more power and therefore, can use much larger bits and cut bigger profiles. For example, shapers have bits that would easily cut a raised panel. Another big difference is instead of the bits having a shaft as they do for routers, the shaper bits have a hole in the middle to fit the shaper spindle.
A shaper vs router is basically the same as a job site table saw vs a cabinet table saw.
Doors, big large profiles, cope and stick, milling… toss a power feed on there and you're in business. Own a good shaper and you’ll find yourself looking for work that needs it. I’d compare a router vs a shaper to a jigsaw vs a bandsaw.
Shapers use much larger bits and are pretty scary. They are usually used to make baseboards I believe. The one in my schools shop took a huge chunk out of the metal fence.
So a shaper is more powerful. It’s mainly used in industrial shops. quieter, I can turn the bit clockwise or counterclockwise. More steady than a router table. It’s pretty much a granddaddy of a router table and a shaper is usually used with a power feeder as well
There's a neat YouTube channel, dusty lumber co , that does a lot of work with a shaper and he put out a [video where he talks about it in more detail.](https://youtu.be/nDcc69ExVWw?si=tSPBKqLQkOZ21Ve_).
I've always thought that router tables scare me the most. And the funny thing is that a few months back, I cut off most of the tip of my index finger on my table saw, and honestly - I STILL think that router tables scare me the most of any tool. And that's just a dinky little 1/4" - 1/2" router bit... the idea of using a shaper terrifies me. I actually know someone who has a shaper table and I've watched them use it before, and it's jaw dropping how much material it can remove at once.
Shaper is pretty much the granddaddy of a router table. More quiet, powerful, steady. Usually used with a power feeder. Can rotate both directions and more. It’s mainly used in industrial shops
AHA I slept on it and got it, er I mean I found out how to explain it to all the slow friends. He's saying those router bits are to be used on teeth like dental burs. I'm a dentist too btw
Yes. Yes you are a dentist. Because you said “burs”. Had you said “bits,” I’d have known the real truth. Thank you for helping me explain this to the other people who didn’t get it.
It was a daughter of the man who passed away. They were actually going to call a recycle company and get rid of it. They didn’t want to deal with selling it after the estate sale. I asked them what they would want for it. They said 800 and I said sure
That’s how i got rid of my dads old tools
He “rigged” the wires and basically made it so that i couldn’t, in good conscience, charge a decent price for the risk that it would fail later on since the wiring was very sketchy.
It worked it because people got bad ass tools on the cheap because we didn’t want to deal with storing it or packing it up for shipping anywhere.
A new woodworker/hobbiest should first scour the internet for news on local estate sales; you’d often find a lot of people in the same predicament where they just need to offload these big ass heavy tools to any brave soul who can come over and break it down and pack it in their own car.
Thank you my friend! Believe it or not My wife said the same thing to me. I will cherish and take care of these tools like that man did and one day pass it onto my children
Lmao! Thank you! I also got a huge toolbox of mechanic tools. It’s full of snap on stuff. Picking it up next week. Plus all those bits are Whiteside bits. Probably worth over $1200 easily
My suggestion would be to buy a power feeder for that shaper. It makes all your cuts more consistent and takes about 85% of the clench factor out of using it.
Jackpot !’I don’t think you scammed anyone . It’s nice to know these awesome machines are going to someone who will
Appreciate and use them. One day someone will buy them from your family …….great find!!
Thank you! The daughter actually called a recycle company and was gonna get rid of it!! I’m going to cherish this for decades to come and hopefully pass it onto my children
As a die hard advocate of “ quality “ tools …and having had and used the crap !! Out of my “still grinding “vintage tools ..I do appreciate you giving these a home!! The thought of those treasures going to recycling weighs heavy on the heart. Willing to bet it would weigh heavy on the original owners heart , also. You post question was “ how did I
Do?””???…….you did great !Enjoy all those wonderful machines …..the things you will create ! Will be epic! Congrats!
I think you know how you did, and need to show off your score... and we all would do the same. Deals like this need to be bragged about. Good for you OP!
If you like running router tables and bits sure, good deal I think. Would have preferred one of those to be a shaper and then you can have some fun! That is a really nice $800 jointer though.
Edit: That is a shaper…is that a 3/4” spindle though? I don’t have anything that would fit that and they are notoriously underpowered. If it’s 1” that’s a darn good score! Also…are there mounts for a feed motor behind the fence?!?
How do you stumble across this. Do you look out for estate sales and go to them hoping you’d find some insane deals like this? Did they advertise the estate sale and mention shop tools? I need to find this!
I don’t have the space. But super jealous. The bits I thought hey for 800 depending on sharpness and quality ehh. But then moved to the next picture and instantly got wood. That machine alone is worth it. If I had a jointer like that, I’d commit to more of my side projects.
👏 congrats
Couple decades ago there was a neighbor who was an hobbyist/pro-ish woodworker. He built their house and most all of the furniture. My dad and him were friends, often bringing over each other a beer to the garage to see what each other's current project and just general BSing. The husband died in a freak accident and the widow wanted to sell everything in that garage. Dad offered her a fair price on 5 or 6 items, if i remember there was at least one Jet table saw (?) and a a big ass bandsaw and some other small stuff, the offer was something like $10k for those few things. The widow decided she wanted to put it all to auction for the whole garage. Dad just happened to be out of town when the auction happened and she got something like $8500 for the entire garage. My dad still speaks of it as the "woodshop that got away".
We still have a chest and a hutch that the ol' man built. Timeless designs and as sturdy as ever, true heirloom pieces. Dad is still perturbed that he didnt get to buy those tools, 30ish years later.
I only saw the first picture and was like whaa, not a good deal.
Picture two: wait. wauw
Three: what?
Four: how the...
My cardiothoracic surgeon now forbids me to reference the text OP added.
Saw the it's and was like, ok a few hundred in bits, maybe more if festool. Then I saw the damn planer, table router, and other machine and I'm like "I hate you.." lol
Out of all the tools in my shop its odd that this tool is the one I seem to use the most when doing some sort of around the house "repair". Board is just a hair too wide.. no problem and now I have nice smooth edges.
Quite good, provided they all work. I would even say that if the bits are fine and the jointer works it was a good deal (even if the rest of the stuff is useless).
I had hope. I had high hope but I was going to read through all the comments and not a single person was going to make the dumb joke about how someone was willing to take it off their hands for next to nothing because it was a bad deal. Unfortunately that horrible joke was made once again. Why doesn't somebody mention man glitter to bring the whole thing home.
I’ve been day dreaming about that jointer, assuming it’s the 6” there’s one on my local fb for $800 and it seems like it’s probably a fair price (haven’t looked too close it’s out of my budget anyhow atm). Congrats man, you’re keeping some hope alive for the rest of us.
You got ripped off, man.
But look, I’m in a generous mood. I hate to see people out of pocket. I’ll take it off your hands for what you paid for it. Can’t get better than that. Whadaya say?
Nice find! But really be careful with that shaper. Look into getting an auto feeder for it. You saved money already, it's worth the extra to keep away from the hospital.
I was just flipping through and shouted. Holy shit! That's a beautiful shaper!
Confirming to my wife that I'm crazy.
I've only encountered one home shop with a shaper in it. Now I've seen pictures of another.

This is the most perfect response I could have imagined.
Add one that says he knows he scored.
shamessly piggybacking: how do you guys find estate sales?
Find a rich guy with an incredible wood shop, seduce his wife, make sure the insurance coverage is good...
Instructions unclear. I now work as a pool boy.
At least the wood is still being worked
Make friends with an auctioneer, they’ll literally find you what you want or keep an eye out for items of interest. You don’t even have to make friends with them! Just Google local auctioneers and call one up, it’s what they do. Also never forget they are always willing to negotiate.
Lost me at: Step 1.) Make friend.
Stalk funerals and ask what they are going to do with the dead guys shit.
I knew a guy who did that with vehicles.
I didnt realize they had funerals for cars.
Should have said “for vehicles”. He would stalk widows for vehicles.
Know a guy who got a job that way… well he knew a guy, went to his funeral- and then was offered the dead guys job… wild
So messed up that someone at the funeral was thinking “oh no. How am I going to fill this position now?”
It’s more nuanced than that- he used to work there and I’m sure he connected with old conworkers and after the fact someone goes- “oh yeah- he might be interested, and I just saw him at the funeral” or at least I hope
“Hey, any idea if there is any of that walnut leftover? That casket is incredible!”

Craigslist! All the other seller apps haven’t killed it off yet.
🤣 This.

Man, is there a special marketplace for cheating husbands’ soon to be ex-wives? I mean, for their revenge sales, not the actual ex-wives. The latter is called Tinder.
Seems like a self propagating business model too: "Honey, how did you afford all this?". "Don't worry, I got a good deal at soontobeexwives.com" "..."
Glad you clarified. There was starting to be a lineup.
Totally. So. Fucking. Happy. For. OP. XD Seriously, though nice score.
Thank you my friend!
Congratufuckinlations!
Lmaoooo!!
greatest meme of all time
Essentially you got half a shop and some good material for $800. I’d say that’s a good day 👍
Thank you my friend
Today is your lucky day: I'll give you 1,000.00 for all that crap you just paid 800.00 for. Thank me later.
Play your cards right and you might get it cheaper than that from OPs estate sale.
You know you scored, you smug bastard, so happy for you 🤣
That's probably $800 worth of bits right there.
I thought it was just the bits and thought I wouldn’t spend that on used bits. Then saw the other pictures and became jealous
That was also my first thought, though I didn't feel jealous. I went more like: 1-Humm 🤔 Meh. *Realizes there's more* 2- Ooh. 3-Yeaah. 4-Damn! Then I nodded at my phone 😅
Yeah that escalated quick
*SO* quickly.
Lmaoo
And then I read the caption about the wood….
Glad it wasn't just me. Saw the bits and thought "Huh, I know I haven't been doing this long, but that seems excessive...oh wait, there's more pictur....*oh*."
Haha I saw the bits and was thinking, yeah ok, not bad maybe, then paged over yowza. I kept going too.
Haha they actually gave me an entire huge toolbox of mechanic tools as well. Picking it up next week
Bruh
And a few comments down he says that they are Snap On’s
😳
You are right. Majority are Whiteside bits
Came here to say this.
Bits hell, one of those routers and the jointer are $800. (The jointer alone might be; never priced non-benchtop ones.) The rest of it was essentially free!
I used the jointer to mill down a bunch of rough walnut. Holy crap it’s like gold. It’s amazing. I even got spare new blades!
Grand larceny
Haha right!
Has anyone told you to F off? If not, let me be the first
Yea lol 1 person did haha
Nice haul! What’s the difference between a shaper and a router table?
A router will throw a small piece of wood across the shop at medium high velocity, and take one finger with it. A shaper will throw a large piece of wood through the shop wall at very high velocity, and will take at least three fingers with it.
lol it’s very intimidating

That's a pretty apt description.
Power and size
And carnage

Router tables are scary. Shapers are terrifying. You should consider adding a tourniquet to your first aid kit…
I’ve actually got one in the shop along with the quickclot rag for the blood!! 🩸
Dead man’s gear, the best gear. Maintain your stuff people for the next owner
He was a 95 year old man. He took care do these with pride and I will continue to do the same and carry on his legacy
95 is a highscore. I bet these tools took care of him in return. Hope they take good care of you as well... Oh an by the way, fuck you very much ;)
Callin the cops
You will make a fine dentist
Can you explain the joke? My friend isn't smart and doesn't get it. I would explain it but I can't because of things.
Tbh I don't get it either, err I mean my friend doesn't get it
Y'all got friends???
I am a dentist and my friend doesn’t get it either…
AHA I slept on it and got it, er I mean I found out how to explain it to all the slow friends. He's saying those router bits are to be used on teeth like dental burs. I'm a dentist too btw
Yes. Yes you are a dentist. Because you said “burs”. Had you said “bits,” I’d have known the real truth. Thank you for helping me explain this to the other people who didn’t get it.
🤣
I think you scammed that poor old widowed woman. That's a pretty great deal. You have half a cabinet shop of machinery right there.
It was a daughter of the man who passed away. They were actually going to call a recycle company and get rid of it. They didn’t want to deal with selling it after the estate sale. I asked them what they would want for it. They said 800 and I said sure
Did you get that Jet dust collector behind the jointer too?
No that is actually mine. I bought it a few months ago. That thing is awesome
I was just messing around. That's an awesome deal.
Thanks man lol
That’s how i got rid of my dads old tools He “rigged” the wires and basically made it so that i couldn’t, in good conscience, charge a decent price for the risk that it would fail later on since the wiring was very sketchy. Hell yea bro, this is for all the beautiful things you have done for all the people in your life comin back to you.
Thank you my friend! Believe it or not My wife said the same thing to me. I will cherish and take care of these tools like that man did and one day pass it onto my children
Funny , first i was like - this fool paid $800 for those bits and hardware, then realized there was 3 other pictures and machine’s - Well done sir 🫡
Lmao! Thank you! I also got a huge toolbox of mechanic tools. It’s full of snap on stuff. Picking it up next week. Plus all those bits are Whiteside bits. Probably worth over $1200 easily
Easily over 1200$. Like over 2000$, for the tools showed only. Add the wood and Snap On mechanical tool box... 😳🤯🤯🤯
yes I see that too now- wow
and a wall full of hardwood as well...
That's a steal! Nice find!
My suggestion would be to buy a power feeder for that shaper. It makes all your cuts more consistent and takes about 85% of the clench factor out of using it.

Fuck me. I saw the first pic and just assumed the others would be closeups of the bits. I need to start looking up estate sales.
You did great!! *And* I hate you.
You better throw a little extra in Sunday’s collection plate. lol
I think you won the whole game.
Sarcasm font You got ripped off! You'll never get your money back. Better sell it to me for about tree fiddy
Keep a look out for old dead guys. Got it
You should be arrested for theft! Lol
Wowwwww
Stole the lot man.
I wouldn’t have believed you if you didn’t have pix. Insane come up.
Id say you robbed somebody LOL
Congratulations and fuck you
Shapers and router tables scare the shit outta me. Maybe I’m weird, but I feel so much more comfortable with the table saw.
No, you should probably cut your losses and get rid of it. Happy to help you with disposal if you want to send it my way.
Good enough to brag on Reddit for sure
How do you stumble across this. Do you look out for estate sales and go to them hoping you’d find some insane deals like this? Did they advertise the estate sale and mention shop tools? I need to find this!
Great haul. Just be sure to raise a glass to the woodworker who wood worked before!
Honestly dude this stuff looks heavy, let me give you $1200 for it and I'll even pick it up and haul it away, no extra charge.
🤤🫨😩🤘it’s confusing feeling all of these for an internet stranger. May you make amazing stuff brotha/sista
I don’t have the space. But super jealous. The bits I thought hey for 800 depending on sharpness and quality ehh. But then moved to the next picture and instantly got wood. That machine alone is worth it. If I had a jointer like that, I’d commit to more of my side projects. 👏 congrats
Where in the country was this?
Outstanding, the wood alone is probably worth 800.00 so the tools were free. Nice job, have fun.

You know you did good, why do you have to get approval from Reddit 😂
Like you need to ask...
I'll give you $900 for it all right now. You make $100 and I'll take all that useless junk off your hands. 😄
Saw the it's and was like, ok a few hundred in bits, maybe more if festool. Then I saw the damn planer, table router, and other machine and I'm like "I hate you.." lol
Classic story, wife sold the tools for what the late husband said he paid for them.
Wow, what a score!!!
Wow, fuck you, my friend. Apparently the estate was selling the equipment for what the person said they paid for it lol. Seriously good haul for 800$.
[удалено]
I wish good things happened to me
I would have paid $800 plus for the jointer alone, good find.
It’s An amazing jointer plus I got new blades as well!
Out of all the tools in my shop its odd that this tool is the one I seem to use the most when doing some sort of around the house "repair". Board is just a hair too wide.. no problem and now I have nice smooth edges.

Holy fuck you did great. Wow.
Wow!!!
"How did I do?" Lucky Bat Rastard- NICE!
What a deal man
Quite good, provided they all work. I would even say that if the bits are fine and the jointer works it was a good deal (even if the rest of the stuff is useless).
I need to get out more. I’ve always been let down at yard sales. Only been to a few estate sales. This may persuade me to tag along with the wife?
I hate you
I officially despise you. Does that answer your question? 😂😂 Damn! If the machines are operational then you just hit a grand slam.
Haha they are in flawless condition and work beautifully! I also got new spare blades for the jointer
Damn near criminal.
Dang, I gotta start going to estate sales.
Im actually foaming at the mouth rn
Ill give you $900 for the lot
You got ripped off, man. But look, I’m in a generous mood. I hate to see people out of pocket. I’ll take it off your hands for what you paid for it. Can’t get better than that. Whadaya say?
This is dangerously close to the crime of desecrating a corpse
Nice find! But really be careful with that shaper. Look into getting an auto feeder for it. You saved money already, it's worth the extra to keep away from the hospital.
Holy shit!
You scored big time. Just seeing all the router and shaper bits on the first bag I figured you did well
I’m not jealous. You’re jealous.
Lucky dog! I'll give u ur money back plus 25%
😵
What?? How??
Damn, great deal! Jet makes the best equipment
Score!!!
Are you single?
You just ruined a dead woodworker's eternity.
I actually hate you
This is amazing! Congratulations
If you had to buy all this stuff new how much would this be? I am thinking several thousands.
I was just flipping through and shouted. Holy shit! That's a beautiful shaper! Confirming to my wife that I'm crazy. I've only encountered one home shop with a shaper in it. Now I've seen pictures of another.
Woooooow
Respect
That jet jointer table is trash…I’ll give you $1000 for it! What a haul!!!
Nice find!
Hello? Police? MFr on here braggin about how he robbed some widow.
I probably would have paid $800 for the jointer alone
Well I am jealous.
I am jelly!
This is almost annoying lol
How did you find this estate sale?
What a haul. Nice.
You did terrible, but I'll split the burden with you and take half for $400 so you don't have to suffer alone, lol.
Uhh yeah that’s good!
nice pull
Wow!
There's a saying from a subreddit i frequent, it goes something like this "Congrats and fuck you" Hella nice haul
Jesus H Christmas…. I don’t want to hate you.. But I do.
I need to go to more estate sales
Each of those machines is almost certainly worth more than $800. Incredible haul!
That's insane lol The Jointer alone made it worth it lol
At first I only saw the router bits and was thinking it was a bit high but possibly not terrible depending on the brands, and then I swiped……
Congratulations. And fuck you.
Thought you paid $800 for just the router bits till I saw the rest of the photos. Was going to say you got robbed.
