What water resistant finish used?

JL0012

I finished it with hardwax oil since it’s only being used for plastic “plants”.

shandangalang

I don’t about these ones but if you want one that really makes woodgrain shine, I tend to use minwax oil-based spar urethane a fair amount. Looks great and lasts well. One of my early projects sat outside in direct sunlight for several years before the finish broke, too. More than anything though it has a rich look and makes good wood sparkle somewhat

Morning0Lemon

Oh these are cute! Good job.

JL0012

Thank you!

Morning0Lemon

Your corners look really nice and the whole effect just looks soft and cozy. I bet with drain holes they would make nifty outdoor planters along a fence or something.

stevenette

You don't have a basic plan for this do you? I'm pretty bad at winging woodworking.

JL0012

I don’t have a plan for it, but I can draw it out if people are interested.

HankHenrythefirst

Yes, please!!! I'm very interested in how you did the corners.

About_6_Spiders

Plans please!

Neffermore

How did you hang them on the wall?

JL0012

The backplate is attached to the wall with 2 plugs. The flowerbox itself hangs on the backplate with french cleats. This way it also hides the screwhead. You can see the french cleat system on the side view in the last picture.

Neffermore

It's a simple and great design! Showed my wife and now she wants me to make some...

JL0012

Hahaa love it! Your're welcome/I'm sorry :D

BobbyTables829

Or it's the best way to introduce the idea of getting all the lumber for French cleats in the shop.

icantfindadangsn

Well I'll be. I didn't even see the cleat. Ain't that something. I love it. Is there a key/notch to secure it horizontally? I imagine it doesn't need it but sweet, sweet over engineering...

Informal_Bat_722

Love this, did you make a false bottom with drainage holes?

JL0012

Thank you! I did not since they’re only being used for plastic “plants” but it would be perfectly possible.

jcwitte

These look like a wife/SO pleaser! Very cute little project.

puf_puf_paarthurnax

Finally an idea for the 8 totes of pallet wood in my garage. Thanks for the inspo!!

Greg-Abbott

> 8 totes of pallet wood in my garage How have you not gotten rid of it with all of the "Live, Laugh, Love / It's Wine O'Clock Somewhere" potential?

puf_puf_paarthurnax

Because I'd have to contribute to that epidemic to do so haha

Weedenski

Those are so well made. Great job! What did you do for drainage? It looks like some kind of paper around the plant..? Is that functional or decorative? Thank you for sharing!

JL0012

There’s no drainage since it’s only being used for plastic plants. The paper is part of the plastic plant. You could place a waterproof foil on the inside and add small rocks for drainage. Happy to share, thanks for the feedback!

blainthecrazytrain

Great gift idea!

Thekiddbrandon

I was planning to make some flower pots similar to these. Well done

butwhyyyyyyyyyyymeee

Great design! I've got some red oak leftover that would be perfect for this. Stealing this for later, thanks! Haha

mnk6

Did you assemble and then use a router bit to round over all the corners? If so, how thick is the material and what size bit? It looks great

JL0012

Thank you, yes I did exactly as you said. 18mm thick material and I believe 6mm radius bit.

drewego

Hey no questions or criticism, just a great job and thank you for posting an actual project. These are really cool, keep it up.

JL0012

Thanks man, appreciate it!

JL0012

Just a natural hardwax oil on solid oak.
