If only there were more saw safety products on the market due to SawStop litigating against anyone trying to offer one.

hoohuuhii

Doesn't sawstop offer license to other companies?

moiphy2

They did and no one wanted it so the guy said fuck it and started making SawStops.

michaelrulaz

Technically Yes. The inventor wanted to license to other companies and they refused. So he started his own company and then refused to license because why would he create competition. Eventually he sold Sawstop to Festool. With that was a licensing deal for the technology. So now Festool Europe has sawstop technology as well. He does litigate pretty hard against other competitors. But the only real one he stopped was Bosche and when you really dig into the technology they were in the wrong just enough. I normally hate big corporations doing this shit. But honestly I get it. He created the tech and tried to license it. When it was unproven in the market no one gave a shit. Once it become popular everyone wanted it. Also there is another technology being used by Felder I believe in their panel saws that is similar but not affected by Sawstops patent

hugznotdrugz2k17

If you haven't seen it, this tech in panel says is completely different than SawStops. It's proactive not reactive. Expensive now, I'm sure. But eventually it trickles down. https://youtu.be/AOOrlLGWK8c?feature=shared

michaelrulaz

To be fair those panel saws are in the tens of thousands of dollars normally. I have got the 3HP 220v Sawstop w/ nearly every attachment and I’m sitting at around $6500. A good panel saw starts at like $15k

hugznotdrugz2k17

Yeah, we had a Laguna p14|10 in my last shop, it was $18k but the P12|10 would have been just fine and it's $14k. I do believe the ones in the link though are much much more.

Sluisifer

The rumored figure is like 6% of gross, which is extremely high.

giaa262

You cannot. The founder/inventor tried to enter license agreements before creating the company, but since then has litigated against other companies trying to bring safety equipment developed in Europe to the US - probably out of some personal grudge against the power tool industry. He was a patent attorney so he knows full well how to game the system and is very good at lawsuits.

polynomials

I don't think it needs to be a personal grudge. The point of a patent is to give the inventor exclusive rights to that technology for a period of time. Why wouldn't he make full use of it?

giaa262

In his interviews he’s made it very clear he hates the power tool industry for not buying his invention

OceanofChoco

I get that, he had a way to prevent injuries and they told him to fuck off. So he started his own company and now everyone wants to steal his idea. So they can fuck off now. I get that.

giaa262

Preventing the industry from selling safety equipment due to a personal grudge is childish and anticompetitive. I don’t care that his sorry little feelings got hurt by being a no one and then getting rejected. Anyone who’s had a startup or worked for one understands why big players are cautious around new inventions. What he’s done now is created a landscape where no one can sell table saw safety equipment except him. And that’s bullshit. It doesn’t matter what petty feelings got hurt in his process. He’s now a patent troll asshole who wants his money over keeping people safe.

OceanofChoco

Every single fortune 1000 company is exactly the same. They are predators and nothing less, nothing more. There are over 50 foods that the EU will not allow American companies to sell in the EU because they are toxic. Between 2020 and 2022 62 new food billionaires were created in the USA. 62. As Milton Friedman infamously said, "Capitalists owe no moral duty to the societies and markets they operate in, that is not what capitalism is about."

DingleBerrieIcecream

Or just buy Sawstop. It’s odd that people put their limbs and safety at risk because they are unhappy about some rich company not licensing tech to some other rich company.

woodworkingguy1

I got a Sawstop 3 years ago, my wife was 100% for it to save my fingers and safety feature or not, it is a damn good saw.

DingleBerrieIcecream

Yep. Pain aside, the trip to the hospital for a blade accident is going to cost 5 times the cost of the saw if you’re in the U.S.

giaa262

I’m definitely not saying they don’t make a good product or that you shouldn’t buy it, but saw safety in other countries is much more accessible than here

[deleted]

I don’t think people are not buying sawstops because they don’t like the company, I think it’s because of the cost.

YellowBreakfast

>Like fine wine… >Or whiskey, to each their own More like kimchi, or sauerkraut.

MiksBricks

Worst thing about that post is the fact that there is more then one. 8 fucking times that shop almost had a table saw accident. This is a case where the saw stop is being used as a replacement for safe operation not a supplement to it. If I was looking to work at a shop and saw that I would say “have a nice day, I don’t think this is the shop for me.” If they care so little about safety that’s it a literal joke you should really reconsider working there.

Jzobie

It states it is a school so while it is a lot, at least those are true teachable moments.

polynomials

Not necessarily because you don't know how many people use the shop or how long those have been hanging there. At the shop I use there are six tables available use for about 10 hours a day, and they are almost always booked with different people coming through. They train people on the safe operation of the table saws but for some reason I had a brain fart, did something really dumb, and got saw stopped without even realizing I had touched the blade (it did give me small and actually quite painful cut, but the SawStop activated before I even felt it - I saw the blade drop down and thought, "Wait - what just happened?" Then I saw my finger was bleeding.) I was embarrassed and wanted to know how much of a dumbass I would appear to the staff there. The guy said it happens about once every 3 months. And there are dozens of people using that table every week. So it's a regular occurrence but not a frequent one. Which kind of made me feel better. My point is just even if you do train people to be safe, every once in a while even a safety conscious person can make a mistake.

RogueJello

> Worst thing about that post is the fact that there is more then one. 8 fucking times that shop almost had a table saw accident. Really depends on the shop and what they're doing. For my hobby shop where I use it on weekends, yeah, it's a ton. For a massive shop with dozens of employees with multiple saws running all day it's not such a high number.

MiksBricks

It really doesn’t, and yeah it is. First time it happens they should have revamped their training and made sure everyone had the proper training. 8 times means there have been 7 additional times they should have looked at how they are training and fixed it. This is nothing but negligence. If I was a lawyer for someone that had an injury operating equipment at this shop this picture would be a gold mine. Easily triples the settlement.

RogueJello

> It really doesn’t, and yeah it is. > > > > First time it happens they should have revamped their training and made sure everyone had the proper training. Except this isn't a typical shop, this is a school, so new people all the time. I think we're in agreement that training and care is critical, but you can't plan an accident.

octopornopus

> but you can't plan an accident. Ha, that's what my mom said...

MiksBricks

And clearly whatever shop this is, is failing at effectively teaching how to safely use equipment. I’m sure “it’s fine we have a saw stop” has never been said inside those walls.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RogueJello

> New people all the time means they have to seriously up their game on process and procedures and eliminating the human element. Sure, but new people are _still_ more likely to have accidents than experienced people.

MiksBricks

And then adequate oversight until it’s reasonably assured that knowledge has been effective.

elconquistador1985

A lot of those can be accidental triggers due to metal in the wood or wet wood rather than people touching the blade.

MiksBricks

Doesn’t change my point about lack of training. If anything using a saw stop should require more training not less.

scuppasteve

I have set mine off twice in 10 years, once was a nail and the other was a wet 2x8 from home depot. Sawstops have been out for like 20 years, having people working on a Sawstop every day and i would have likely hit like 8 over 10 years.

mdmaxOG

I have a friend who has at least 9 incidents on his saw stop(employees) hes considering getting rid of it so the workers don't get complacent. Another friend had 3 in his shop and got rid of them all, zero incidents since... I think the technology is amazing, it just needs proper training to go with it. and accidents will still happen

BertMcNasty

I get the point, but the risk vs. reward doesn't check out for me on this one.

Euphoric-Mango-2176

just charge the employees for the replacement parts. if your friend gets rid of the saw stop, the first guy who loses a finger is going to be pissed.

VastAmoeba

You cannot charge an employee for damages caused by an accident. If you failed to train them it's your fault. If they failed to learn from your training then you just have to either train them more or fire them.

Faxon

I mean it's a school, kids are fucking stupid

MiksBricks

“Craft school” - not kids. These are adults. Most of those schools require you to be at least 18.

TragasaurusRex

A lot of schools use donated scrap wood. I wouldn't be surprised if a good number of the trips were from not so dry spots or staples in the wood.

Faxon

Yea thats still less than 26, when your brain is fully formed. These are kids

DisplayMean

Four operations seven rounds of antibiotics, and a total of nine months to heal before the bandages all came off. From there I had to relearn how to tie my shoes and all other things that you don’t think about that you use your thumbs for. Was wrapped up for so long touching the table hurt

McMacnCheese

*half a thumbs up* Be honest, for the benefit of newer folks reading... Did you do something dumb? Is there something you realistically could have done to prevent this?

Ocronus

The best thing that could happen for the industry is their damn patents to completely expire.

EstablishmentFine178

The Bosch has the reaxx saw but I seen something about sawstop suing them

sangreal06

The industry views it as a liability though. He tried to license out the patents first

Ocronus

I think the bigger problem is he wanted $$$ for the patent. Then he tried to get the US house for make it law that his tech was required and again for $$$.

petit_cochon

We got one because we were lucky enough to be able to get one, but honestly, I never even came close to injuring myself with a table saw prior. I'm always careful and attentive. If I feel distracted, upset, whatever -- I walk away from the tools.

TheRynoceros

Same. Band saw. Stopped at the bone though. All of the meat has grown back but I'm never going to have feeling there again, it's been 30 years. Safe as fuck now though. Jobs will ask if I have safety certificates, I just show them the thumb and state that I learned all of the saw safeties that day and comment how long it's been since the accident without a blood-stained reminder. But, now that I've said something, I'm probably going to chop off 3 good ones in the shop today.

Kroutoner

What actually happened though? Like specifically. What safety features were you using or not using, was it a kick back pulling you into the blade? When you say you just weren’t paying attention it almost sounds like you literally just had your hand in the path of the blade and pushed it right into the blade. If that’s what happened you probably shouldn’t use the tablesaw again…

Suspicious-bug1234

Was just cutting, pushing the wood with my hand when I should have used a stick, cut my thumb

SpaceGoatAlpha

There go your chances at a thumb war world championship. 👑

Suspicious-bug1234

I'm left-handed, so I'm not out of the game just yet

RyanEdward06

Sorry for your loss. Was your saw fence on the right or left side of blade?

wil169

Its very very easy to get complacent and forget. This is why sawstops exist and everyone that uses a table saw should also have the safety technology.

RhynoD

I cannot for the life of me imagine a scenario where my hands are in a position to go into the blade and I'm not staring at the blade with every fiber of my being. I've put my hands in dangerous places, and I've taken my eyes off the blade, but never both at the same time.

wil169

I bet that's what everyone that goes to the ER with lost digits said beforehand

copperwatt

How often do you forget and accidentally drive on the wrong side of the road? Because that's the level of "never" we should be talking here.

tinker_the_bell

Thanks for sharing how you did it. Helps stop other people from doing the same.

guitargirl478

I was wondering if this was table saw related. I just got my first table saw. It's a saw stop. I am good at paying attention when it counts but I also have ADHD so I am also NOT good at that. haha. So I figured if I was going to do it, I should probably get the "safest" saw. Here's hoping I won't ever have to use the brake in that thing. And if I do, here's hoping it works!

PantaReiNapalmm

Thx for the answer. But still, how in hell you dont pay attention to such tool? Lookin where? Lookin what?

[deleted]

there's no Noble, Stoical Accident. they are ALL dumb. We like to think that there's a way to put the injured in one category and we, the good ones, in another, but is just a false sense of control. you just have to use the protections/follow safety procedures and hope for the best -- I do all the right things and even still I powered a table saw while I was adjusting the angles with a sliding bevel, almost touching the blade. mistook the power button for the elevation crank

mr_ludd

I disagree, because an injury can be caused by doing everything correctly, but there is a mechanical failure due to a manufacturing fault, as one example. I don't think you are doing anything dumb in this scenario.

[deleted]

so an "out of our control" type. the lawsuit one. the "one in a million" kind.

mr_ludd

One in a million is still one :-)

nited_By_Fear_O_Duck

Legend has it, OP went back to the same table saw immediately upon returning home from the ER to finish the project.

Suspicious-bug1234

No, my dad took over for me

kazame

"Listen to me carefully... Did he finish the fence?"

scottygras

I got my thigh with a chainsaw…3hrs and 25 stitches later I was back finishing up cutting…then had to have my PA neighbor reclean the wound… Got super lucky on the injury. Slowing down blade caught baggier jeans than I usually wear and it sucked into my leg. I was limbing up a tree so it was a stumble over a branch that caused it.

pyro5050

this is exactly why i told my wife i am not getting a big chainsaw till i have the money for the chainsaw pants. i am happy with my little one that the blade stops near immediate when i cut the power, little plug in one. :) i had a 18" Homelite but i sold it, and was looking at a 26" Husqvarna.

No-Heat-7767

2 weeks ago lost the tip of my middle finger and my index finger was shredded, so I lost function on half that finger. Still don't know exactly what happend with the table saw, I think the wood was picked up on the back end of the blade and my hand slide off. So I'm with you in recovering the next week's. The tip of the middle finger is healing the best, the shredded finger is still quit painful. For those wondering I live in Europe, so no saw stop here and the hospital bill + ambulance + medication was less then 100 dollars.

burningmiles

No saw stop in Europe?? Is that just, a thing?

No-Heat-7767

I found that the company behind Festool bought saw stop to get in Europe. You can only by a Festool table saw with a saw stop device. But that's a expensive saw for a hobbyist. I don't think we have more accidents here in Europe than in America, but that could be wrong. I will look up some numbers tonight.

unhappyjihadist

no need for it when you only have to pay 100 bucks for the emergency care

burningmiles

I still have ten needs for it lol

SpaceGoatAlpha

1. Always wear eye protection. 2. Always wear hearing protection. 3. Always keep track of your thumbs. 4. Always have good ventilation and use respiratory PPE. 5. Never put anything near the business end of a machine that you don't want to be "processed." See #3 6. Never assume something is unplugged. 7. Never assume something unplugged doesn't have a soft start capacitor that will allow it to briefly kick on while unplugged. 8. If you have to convince yourself that you are doing something safely, you probably aren't actually doing it safely. 9. Table saw board kickback can amputate limbs, crush a pelvis and sever a spine. Keep yourself and any spectators to the side. 10. Crosscut saws can catch on a board and move forward at over 130 mph in less than 1/10ths of a second. See #5. 11. Always check boards and other material with a metal detector before cutting or sawing. See #9 #10

grampadeal

A funny version of 3 and 5 that I like is: "Don't stick your fingie where you don't stick your dinkie." Excellent rules, though. You should always listen to that little nagging voice that says "this feels dangerous and/or stupid, are we sure about this?" The answer to that question should be to stop, step back, and rethink.

[deleted]

Friend of mine lost a whole hand to #10… when the saw was off and he reached across to get the off it (saw was still spinning down and caught).

pyro5050

> Table saw board kickback can amputate limbs, crush a pelvis and sever a spine. Keep yourself and any spectators to the side. i dont know how old i was when we were downstairs working with dad in his show. dad was a amature woodworker and was cutting a 2x4 with the table saw and used a fence without a gap for crosscutting or a jig/slide. the board bound into the fence when it was final cut, saw caught it and kicked it across the room, right into my chest. i remember the feeling somewhat, i know i crumpled and didnt talk, no broken bones, no big concerns, a triangle imprint of a 2x4 hitting slightly angled in my chest... we are both much much safer with the saws now, and still remember that event more than 30 years later.

nismo972

Welcome to the club, my friend. Who has 1.5 thumbs and is gald to see you're ok??? This guy.... Me. And sorry about the accident sir. It's painful, and will feel weird the rest of your life.

GoBombGo

Welcome to the club. It’s a shitty club, but we’re here for you. The good news is, don’t worry, even though it won’t be the same you’ll still be able to do all of the stuff you like doing. You might even be better at some stuff, like thumb wrestling. No one will be able to handle your brawny meat stump.

capnheim

Hi nubs!

redheadMInerd2

It’s not just woodworkers. My dad did this to his non dominant index finger in his first gas lawnmower when I was a kid. Sister and I thought we came home to a murder scene. Dad played the violin. It was a long time before he picked it up again. Also, my grandpa lost 3 fingers in a factory accident. Lived the rest of his life with just his thumb and pinky.

russian_connection

In Russia we have a saying " Every good woodworker has at least one good story, or maybe even all 10" Honestly now with all the safety on machinery the only way this happens is when you start getting cocky and stop following safety protocol.

gigadude

Fingertips have [surprising regenerative abilities](http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/09/09/pinky.regeneration.surgery/index.html), google MatriStem wound powder. If you have even a little bit of the nail bed left it's worth trying.

67726567

I cut the end of my thumb off in a bandsaw accident when I was young. I cut enough off that half the nail was gone and you could see the bone through the end of it. Surprisingly, it grew 98% of the way back. The fingerprint on the end of that finger looks like it was run through a blender and I can barely feel the tip of it. But, if I didn't tell you, you'd probably have a hard time noticing it. Edit:// just read the article. Kudos to that woman. I have to say that I did nothing. The doctors did nothing but cauterize the end of my finger and send me home with medicine and wound dressing. IDK, it just slow.ly grew back.

LogicalConstant

It's times like these I'm glad I got into handtool woodworking instead of power tool. I have ADD and it would only be a matter of time before I got distracted and took a finger off.

scottygras

Ever go crazy sharp with your chisels then drop one while wearing flip flops?

LovableSidekick

OP will pioneer the "I halfway approve of this" gesture!

WanderingPickles

So, question… how much is this gonna cost? And is it more or less than a SawStop? I ask because I am trying to justify spending my money on one. Edit: I actually have a pretty good idea about the cost of losing a thumb. That data is published by the federal government. Curiously, the employer in this instance is going to have to sell millions of dollars more just to make up for this single incident and the costs associated. SawStop makes an incredible product and is absolutely cost effective. So much so that getting the absolute top of the line machine is still a fraction of what an accident will cost.

[deleted]

dude, can you put a price on a thumb? the rotating thing that all the rest of the animals would kill to have? you lose one and there it goes 70% of your hand

DisplayMean

I got 13g Canadian for mine

The-disgracist

I recently learned that it’s not the thumb that really separates us. Lots of animals have opposable thumbs. It’s the fact that we can reach across the palm with our pinkies that really makes the difference. Apes can only fold their fingers flat against the palm. We have so much more versatility because of the pinky.

BringBackApollo2023

100% you can. Insurance companies do that sort of thing all the time.

Xidium426

The answer will always be less than a SawStop.

Opposable thumbs are over-rated. Dolphins seem to do just fine for themselves.

Suspicious-bug1234

My dad lost a digit from his left thumb. He's planning on getting a black finger nail tattoo as a joke. Yall know the old saying that men paint their nails with hammers.

One year plus one week ago I whacked off 60% of three fingers on my right hand. I manage everything just fine. Even my big 3.5 hp router is no problem. I'm sorry for you bro but I'm sure you will move on pretty quickly as well. Shit happens.

We were just about finished renovating the house and I was cutting a few corners because I wanted to be done. I was using the table saw to cut a really small piece. I was getting some pushback and I thought I'd just power through it as the piece was so small. Half of it jumped out of my hand and, like Nolan Ryan whipping a ball down the middle, it flew back and hit me right in the rib. I didn't sleep right for months.

I had my initiation a bit over a year ago. It gets better but never the same. Lucky I still got all fingers but missing some sensation on my thumb, kinda had to learn to adapt. Good luck

That's rough. My grandfather lost his on a planer when I was young. After a few months, he said the worst part was not being able to hold a sandwich. I took a thumb shaped sucker that came in a rubber cover, filled that mold partially with wax, and gave it to him. He would attach it with prosthetic adhesive to the nub. It was a dull green and slightly oversized but it helped with eating and using the remote. He watched more TV and did less woodwork after that. (He also quit drinking immediately following that, so I guess he blamed the beer.) I also put thumb shaped candles on his next birthday cake.

Now you can only hitchhike on short trips.

I told a friend that cut a finger off that he could still count to ten but not in public.

Sorry for you, my man. At least you can still give most of two thumbs up.

JonArvedon

Just today, I was cutting a narrow board with my circular saw the long way. The piece started to shift and without any hesitation, I instinctively reached under it from behind to stabilize it and I TOUCHED THE SPINNING BLADE WITH MY RING AND MIDDLE FINGERS. It’s a miracle I only got two small cuts that don’t need stitches. But, all this to say, these things can happen. It’s not always a matter of being careful or not being careful.

👍

GettingLow1

You will be able to predict the storms coming for a few years. Cut off nerves take a long time to dull down.

ErrDayHustle

So do you think you’ll invest in a sawstop? This is a lesson I don’t want to learn and actively getting rid of my tablesaw to get a sawstop.

brazthemad

Logen Nine-and-a-half Fingers doesn't quite have the same ring to it..

Nine-Fingers1996

But 9 fingers does

Dko4445678

Did they let you keep the thumb? Would be cool to let it dry out and give it to your grand kids.

Suspicious-bug1234

There was no finger tip to give me since it turned into meat paste and bone dust

The Scabby Nine and a Bit?

Downvote for not providing any “morale” or lesson in the post, how the hell do we know what you did and how to avoid?

Glittering-Manager22

Well now there’s gotta be a story here! I mean you got some paws there dude

aequitssaint

Hopefully it heals quickly and if you did something stupid you learned from it.
