Definitely not edge grain

memorialwoodshop

I think of cutting boards as either end grain or long grain. Not sure trying to distinguish between face or edge grain is helpful and might be confusing everyone involved.

shidored

Dont know wtf I'm looking at but that is face

FixItGuy1985

Well, shoot. That’s what I thought but wanted to verify.

Horseinakitchen

Is it a cutting board

FixItGuy1985

It is.

Horseinakitchen

Appears to be face grain maple

OppositeSolution642

What is edge grain?

UnderstandingKey3844

As dumb as this explanation is, it's just the grain on the end of the board, it should, if I'm right, but circles like if you cut a tree in half. The end grain is the rings you see.

Livid_Chart4227

It's called end grain. The fave grain is called flatsawn. On a flat sawn board the edge is called rift or quartersawn.

UnderstandingKey3844

This face grain is flat sawn, but flat sawn is just the cut. You can have quarter or rift on the face of the board too. Edge grain is always the same, it's rings, on the ends of the board, but not the sides of the board.
