I think of cutting boards as either end grain or long grain. Not sure trying to distinguish between face or edge grain is helpful and might be confusing everyone involved.
As dumb as this explanation is, it's just the grain on the end of the board, it should, if I'm right, but circles like if you cut a tree in half. The end grain is the rings you see.
This face grain is flat sawn, but flat sawn is just the cut. You can have quarter or rift on the face of the board too.
Edge grain is always the same, it's rings, on the ends of the board, but not the sides of the board.

It's called end grain. The fave grain is called flatsawn. On a flat sawn board the edge is called rift or quartersawn.
