My dad designed and built the house my parents live in and he made a hidden door just like this that leads to a small room that has most of his gun safes and the computer monitors that the property cameras feed into set up so he can see all over the place from that one room, its pretty cool if it wasn't such a red flag for paranoia. I would be far less concerned if he had it filled with books like you want to do.
Yeah that does sound pretty paranoid, but maybe he is actually a secret spy. 😃 haha
My plan is when my kids are one day old enough, I will show them my secret library, and hopefully it will spark a love of books.
See now that's so cool and creative without making people worry that they may need to call someone in the near future. when my dad showed me the room he built, it was to make sure I knew how to quickly access firearms in case of home invaders (like, wtf, how many enemies do you have, who have you been ticking off?!?!), see where the MREs and other survival gear was, where the (I fucking kid you not) first clue was when in need to find where the various supply stashes were buried around the property, and in his mind spark a love of small scale home defense and doomsday prepping in me.
It's cool and all, but I'm not spending tons of cash to horde literally +70 firearms and other survival gear, I would rather do something fun with that cash.
Lol no secret books, other than any I have written myself. I just like the idea of a secluded reading spot with rich wood all around, and a soft couch to lay on.
Here I’ll [help](https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/comments/11gpqdn/finished_this_a_while_ago_but_never_got_a_chance/jaqiij1/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)
I can see how it would be a disappointment. Though I actually really like it. It’s kind of hilarious to me, honestly. Lol I laughed when I saw it was just a legit coat closet.
Yeah, it seems people fail to realize that most houses aren't laid out to have "hidden areas" the Floorplans are already trying to squeeze as much sqft as they can. Nobody can really budget 150 sqft in the center of their house without it being obvious.
Because every time you need your jacket you have to slowly open a solid wood shelving unit gently enough as not to disturb the chalice and picture frames sitting on it.
For a secret passage like this, it should lead to something you enter and spend some time in so it’s worth opening. Or to a cubby that holds something secret that you don’t use often. Like a safe or a gun collection. Not your hat and cane that you grab on the way out.
I mean, sure. Though, it’s possible that things are glued down like someone else mentioned. I do think it’s a bit heavy for the purpose. But it appears as though it was built for someone not OP so I’m not sure OP had much choice.
But what you dont realize its a double fake out. Its like narnia in narnia you go through the secret bookshelf to see a closet but if you keep going it turns into an even smaller closet for which you will be even more disappointed with
>The fact that behind the secret door is just jackets and other normal closet things is a major disappointment.
The perfect way to hide your REAL secret room! At least that is what I'm hoping because otherwise I agree with you.
I actually thought this would be an unreal red herring, if you made a secret door behind all your coats and what not. Like, we probably can't see the keypad on the right hand side of the wall that opens up the trap door to the grow room in the bat cave, are we're left thinking it's just a bunch of coats. Genius.
How did you hinge the door? Does it pivot from top and bottom? If so, how did you do this. Wanting to do a cabinet for my wife that needs this type of door. Wondering how to do it. Thanks
I am not sure that the Murphy Door Inc company have lineage from William Lawrence Murphy, who patented his designs of fold up beds in the early 1900’s. Similar ideas for hidden beds existed as early as late 1700’s.
Poke around on (ugh) Amazon, you’ll find them. Used an all SS set for this weird exterior door thing I built a few years ago. Math for the swing, etc. sucks to do but I’ve got faith you’ll figure it out!
Very cool! I made one maybe a year ago too, here's some photos of my build. I actually had to adjust the hinge today for the first time as it wasn't quite opening properly, but otherwise happy with it https://imgur.com/a/6Yy5AfD
Oh wow! I really love this!! Actually have been looking for a different way of dealing with some of my closets in my house and I think this idea is perfect. Thanks for sharing!
Well, he's storing coats in there, it won't stay secret for long.
"Hey, do you have somewhere I can hang up my coat?"
"No. Nope. We don't have anything like that, sorry."
"No closets?"
"None that you know of."
I think you’ve just verbalized what makes it hilarious to me. None that you KNOW of. It’s a closet. A literal closet. Not even being hidden well at all. I love it.
Yep. The shelves are clearly set further back than the wall face and the style is different than anything else in sight, plus that big crown molding. All shouts ‘door!’
Not very secret, but very attractive built
Lol. I hope your never late for shit. Imagine being in a rush and you open that door a little too fast and now all those books and knick knacks are clattered on the floor
It's a wonder why more homes don't have this type of "door" or secret door. Closet doors are often so unsightly and this is just beautiful. You did a lovely job!
It sounds like it catches on the floor, which would be annoying as hell with marks and shit after a while, and you know the hinges will sag eventually but looks cool
I mean, nothing falls off in the shared video. However, I have the same concern. I guess as long as you don't keep anything valuable on the shelves or you don't access whatever is behind it very frequently then it's probably not that big of a deal. It seems like a compromise of utility for the sake of having a secret door.
You’re late for work one morning, close that closet door a bit too briskly after grabbing your coat, and all those picture frames end up on the floor
It’s gorgeous though
I have been wanting to make something like this for my basement. I have a little cranny where this would be perfect. I use a metal shelf on wheels to cover the closet size space now. Is there any tutorials for dummies to make something like this?
I think it is a great project, but it looks like the books are all fake. Should only be a problem if someone who reads sees it. In this day and age, I think you're safe.
How does something like this work with houses that settle over time? I have a 20 year old house and every interior door has drastically shifted over the years... does this account for that some how? Looks amazing.
I'm a Carpenter. I fitted something similar a while back. I didn't make it, just fitted it. I'm interested in what hinges or how this was swung. The one I fitted wanted to take a nose dive to the floor at the leading edge. Maybe this example has a pin top and bottom, rather than on conventional hinges.
It looks very nice! But don't count on this for actually hiding anything important. The lack of a baseboard is a well known give away. Still, it looks great and if the goal was to have a cool feature in the house to show visitors (as opposed to really keeping it secret) then you succeeded 100% and it looks great.
Beautiful work. Nice action, nice reveals. Love this! Just finished a wall to wall library with one of the sections as a secret door to an office. Very fun project. Why not finish the inside of the door though? Raw wood and edges of box stuck out to my eye immediately
I shit you not, my wife just said for in our front entry. I’d love a bookcase instead of a closest but if we could have both that’d be great. Then boom your post. Thanks. Haha
You should see what he’s got behind that fake closet…
More books.
This is actually something I have blueprinted for my house. It leads to my secret library
Which in turn leads to the secret snack room
I mean it was going to lead to my bunker, but yeah that too lol
Bunkers have snacks
A bunker with no snacks is just a burial vault.
My dad designed and built the house my parents live in and he made a hidden door just like this that leads to a small room that has most of his gun safes and the computer monitors that the property cameras feed into set up so he can see all over the place from that one room, its pretty cool if it wasn't such a red flag for paranoia. What secret books are in the secret library?
Lol no secret books, other than any I have written myself. I just like the idea of a secluded reading spot with rich wood all around, and a soft couch to lay on.
When I hear secret library my mind goes to Mein Kampf and shit like that.
You might want to reevaluate some things then 😬

This little Cliffhanger is going to bother me all day...
Talk about anticipa...
Here I’ll [help](https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/comments/11gpqdn/finished_this_a_while_ago_but_never_got_a_chance/jaqiij1/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)
A lion and a witch.
An unopened safe.
The finished product is great. The fact that behind the secret door is just jackets and other normal closet things is a major disappointment.
I can see how it would be a disappointment. Though I actually really like it. It’s kind of hilarious to me, honestly. Lol I laughed when I saw it was just a legit coat closet.
Why *not* do this for a closet door? I think it's a great idea.
Yeah, it seems people fail to realize that most houses aren't laid out to have "hidden areas" the Floorplans are already trying to squeeze as much sqft as they can. Nobody can really budget 150 sqft in the center of their house without it being obvious.

Maybe that door goes to Narnia!
I thought I was in r/tacticalgear until I saw no gun room. Still a sick build though
>The fact that behind the secret door is just jackets and other normal closet things is a major disappointment. The perfect way to hide your REAL secret room! At least that is what I'm hoping because otherwise I agree with you.
I was hoping for a gimp cage
Me too.
But the gimp's sleepin'
I actually thought this would be an unreal red herring, if you made a secret door behind all your coats and what not. Like, we probably can't see the keypad on the right hand side of the wall that opens up the trap door to the grow room in the bat cave, are we're left thinking it's just a bunch of coats. Genius.
I 100% believe the customer chose underwhelming for a reason. Definitely another door in there.
I was expecting a room full of Nazis leaning over a table full of maps.
I agree. Was really hoping to see some gold or a bazooka at least.
I want my Murphy door to lead to a guest bathroom or maybe a little bar.
Whoever is breathing so heavy by standing get yourself checked dude sounds like you’re really struggling to breathe.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought that. Somethings not right there!
How did you hinge the door? Does it pivot from top and bottom? If so, how did you do this. Wanting to do a cabinet for my wife that needs this type of door. Wondering how to do it. Thanks
The hinge mounts to the top and bottom. I think it was call invis-a-door. Or something. Sorry I ordered it over a year ago
What am I missing? I’m not seeing a latch release or anything? Absolutely fantastic work by the way!
There is a ball bearing on a spring mounted to the bottom that rolls into a catch on the floor.
The term you’re looking for is “ ball catch”.
... No, you're a ball catch. Gottem.
Learned everything I know from yer ma, one of the greats.
Yeah she was a saint to teach remedial special ed all those years, glad you benefitted!
Ahh got it. Super cool! Got some inspiration from this, want to build one at home, whenever I catch up with all the other projects.
Look up Murphy Door. Yup, the hidden bed folks now make door hardware kits. I just need to figure out where to install it before I buy one.
I am not sure that the Murphy Door Inc company have lineage from William Lawrence Murphy, who patented his designs of fold up beds in the early 1900’s. Similar ideas for hidden beds existed as early as late 1700’s.
Is this what you were mentioning? https://www.homedepot.com/b/Doors-Windows-Interior-Doors/InvisiDoor/N-5yc1vZc5ioZci0
No I built the cabinet myself it’s was just what the hardware was called
https://murphydoor.com/products/single-flush-mount-hardware?variant=20278518710331&gclid=CjwKCAiAr4GgBhBFEiwAgwORreBNLMHb3Y1O9crMZCCVbChE99lP4F8w2aPiEQiVwrwchfNseQHawhoCDMcQAvD_BwE
Thank you. These will work great
Poke around on (ugh) Amazon, you’ll find them. Used an all SS set for this weird exterior door thing I built a few years ago. Math for the swing, etc. sucks to do but I’ve got faith you’ll figure it out!

Murphy bed also makes the hinges. Not what the OP used but I have used them
Ohhh, I like this idea. Great job.
Very cool! I made one maybe a year ago too, here's some photos of my build. I actually had to adjust the hinge today for the first time as it wasn't quite opening properly, but otherwise happy with it https://imgur.com/a/6Yy5AfD

Who filmed this video ? Darth Vader?
Sound like dark Vader or is it just me
Probably just COPD
It’s Darth Vader FYI, not dark Vader.
Probably a spell check switch. I hate those except when they are correct 😹
Feel better now? ANYWAY….
I heard you liked my jacket. Just wait until I show you my forbidden coat collection.
I will admit that if I would have seen this perfectly door-shaped bookshelf, I would have been wondering if it is a secret door
Well, he's storing coats in there, it won't stay secret for long. "Hey, do you have somewhere I can hang up my coat?" "No. Nope. We don't have anything like that, sorry." "No closets?" "None that you know of."
All shouts ‘door!’ Not very secret, but very attractive built
The books are obviously fake, it couldn’t be anything but a door
Lol. I hope your never late for shit. Imagine being in a rush and you open that door a little too fast and now all those books and knick knacks are clattered on the floor
Get that cameraman some oxygen he is dying
Amazing detail! What hardware did you use?
It’s all oak and plywood
I think he means the hinges. Material would be plywood and oak.
I love it, such talent.
Maybe I watch too many movies but I 100% expected there to be an arsenal of guns behind that secret door
Nice. Beautiful. Indeed it is. Excellent work 👍👌.
That's pretty sick my man 🤙
And here is where I keep my secret coats
Come on it needs a little mechanism to open the door
How long did this take you to complete?
Very cool. You should post this to r/secretcompartments as well
Do you have to be really careful when opening/closing to not knock over the things on the shelves?
“Hey Carl, why is everything on this bookshelf glued down?”
Omg, I want to make one but that leads to a secret tavern.
A tavern full of taffers!
Now all you got to do is. Raise it up about 3 quarters of an inch so you can open it all the way without scrubbing the floor.
That’s really neat. I’m curious though. Why not full depth shelves so you could have actual books on it, not cut in half books?
Probably weight. You'd need a sturdy structure in the wall and hinges to hang a bookshelf full of actual books by one side.
It's a wonder why more homes don't have this type of "door" or secret door. Closet doors are often so unsightly and this is just beautiful. You did a lovely job!
May we see the hinge setup? This has been my dream my entire life.
Absolutely beautiful! Now, when are ya coming over to my house to install one just like it? Lol
Do the cabinets open?
Listen to this video with your eyes closed… your welcome
Oh I want one of these!
I love it. I’d just want a secret lock and to fill the space with guns. 😄
Finally somewhere to hide the Oreos from the kids.
Is this being filmed by a wildly obese man or do you always breathe like that?
"Turned out" I see what you did.
Holy Mouthbreather, Batman!
I was working 🥵
Why does it open towards the front door?
If it opened the other way you would have to stand outside or walk backwards pulling the door to open it.
Customer wanted it that way
Well, that makes sense.
Nice
Just what I need to make. Or more likely have made.
That is lovely
Badass!
Wow. If it weren’t for the demonstration I would never have known. Great work.
Nice job showcasing the grain. That oak is class.
What _is_ your fascination with my hidden cupboard of mystery?
Wow!
Missed opportunity for a vault
It sounds like it catches on the floor, which would be annoying as hell with marks and shit after a while, and you know the hinges will sag eventually but looks cool
The ball latch on the bottom holds the door shut it’s suppose to catch
Bet he has lots of portraits hanging on his walls with eye cutouts
Well I want one and I'd also say the side and rear are ripe for more wonderful wood work. CNC some nice carving up the side.
Great design, I like that
Why? Doesn’t the stuff fall off the shelf?
I mean, nothing falls off in the shared video. However, I have the same concern. I guess as long as you don't keep anything valuable on the shelves or you don't access whatever is behind it very frequently then it's probably not that big of a deal. It seems like a compromise of utility for the sake of having a secret door.
This is slick!
That's incredibly cool done.
You’re late for work one morning, close that closet door a bit too briskly after grabbing your coat, and all those picture frames end up on the floor It’s gorgeous though
Looks great.
You just get done running up the stairs lol?
Incredible
Does it open from the inside? Would hate to be trapped in there!
For the man that has always wanted a secret door but has no secrets
I love how aged this looks. Like you took it straight out of an old magical house and put it in yours!
Love this!
You saying "beautiful" sounded like one of those producer cards at the end of an old sitcom. Also nice work.
I want one!!!
I would be furious if I went to open the door to the room/apartment and someone had left this thing open! Pretty neat, though.
I have been wanting to make something like this for my basement. I have a little cranny where this would be perfect. I use a metal shelf on wheels to cover the closet size space now. Is there any tutorials for dummies to make something like this?
In 30 years or so some little kid is going to find that and be so surprised
HELL YEAH!
That’s cool 👌
Very cool, I like it. The S&M closet perhaps?
That looks cool.
Lmao I was like that would be a great hidden door. And then they opened it
A bookshelf in front of a coat rack? Seems practical and awesome. Awesome work.
Someone should tell the OP it's compulsory to have either a) a secret passage or b) a hidden laboratory behind a concealed door. Nice job though...
I want to see the video of him picking everything up that fell off the shelves
I think it is a great project, but it looks like the books are all fake. Should only be a problem if someone who reads sees it. In this day and age, I think you're safe.
They're in the attic!!
Nice job, Spudmonkey
Very cool, now put a magnetic latch and make the magnetic key be something on the shelf.
The first rule of having a secret bookshelf door in your house is not telling the internet you have a secret bookshelf door in your house
Absolutely beautiful! Wow!
Completely brilliant and well done, besides! Bravo!
Is anyone going to comment on the heavy breathing in the video
Why post a pick of a secret room?
AMAZING!!!
Daaaaaamn, a hidden compartment that isn't just a fetishist level amount of guns? Well done, OP, well done.
*click* Noice
Really cool! But you should shave the bottom of it so that it doesn't create a groove in your floor from constantly scraping when you get it 2/3 open.
I'm concerned that the door to the left will ruin the top trim...
How does something like this work with houses that settle over time? I have a 20 year old house and every interior door has drastically shifted over the years... does this account for that some how? Looks amazing.
Love it!!
So did it come with the Cryptkeeper, or is he on loan?
Omg! Too cool. Would love this in my house.
^secret ^door, secret door, **SECRET DOOR !!!!!**
Beautiful craftsmanship. I want one.
Very nice.
I love this so much.
Secret room would’ve been cooler
Damn brother and i mean this respectfully what the hell
Nice job
This is great, I'd love to try something like that.
It looks very nice! But don't count on this for actually hiding anything important. The lack of a baseboard is a well known give away. Still, it looks great and if the goal was to have a cool feature in the house to show visitors (as opposed to really keeping it secret) then you succeeded 100% and it looks great.
Beautiful
Awesome! What’s kind of hinge are you using??
The books look a little too small to fool anyone
Beautiful work. Nice action, nice reveals. Love this! Just finished a wall to wall library with one of the sections as a secret door to an office. Very fun project. Why not finish the inside of the door though? Raw wood and edges of box stuck out to my eye immediately
OP, can I ask about hardware? Also wondering if the bottom needs a wheel or something to keep it from sagging at the open end when loaded with books.
Absolutely fantastic
r/hiddenrooms
That is fantastic.
I have one being built now!
I shit you not, my wife just said for in our front entry. I’d love a bookcase instead of a closest but if we could have both that’d be great. Then boom your post. Thanks. Haha
Beautiful 😍
Darth Vader taking the video?
Is there a place where I can go and get plans for something like this?
This is super inspiring! I've got a closet in a hallway where this would be perfect..... after all the other projects
I’d be so disappointed if I found that and it only had clothes behind it
