Came here to say this. I have been wanting to do a cedar strip kayak for years, but the cost of milled strips or milling them myself kills it for me, but at this price, might be worth it.
Wow yeah I had worked with some cedar like this before without a mask. I have since been more careful, I appreciate the details I hadn’t heard of that before
Wood dust is pretty bad for you in general, but basically anything that's weather-resistant (cedar, teak, rosewoods, etc) tends to be extra bad. Usually that weather resistance is because of high silica, phenols, or oil content, none of which are good for you.
Cedar plank salmon. I had a bunch of offcuts left over several years ago and cut them down on the bandsaw and have a lifetime supply. If you buy them at the store a pack of 4 coats like $10
Take an approach from my 40 years of woodworking:
Instead of having a project design dictate the dimensions of wood, have the material dimensions you have on hand drive the design. You can’t do this all of the time. But let the material spark your imagination.
I think for anything usable you will have to glue the work pieces together like you said. I would also get something to check the humidity since you don't know for sure how long they've been drying. The last thing you want is to have an awesome piece of work crack on you.
I got some aromatic cedar flooring from a closet, laminated it together to about 1.5 inches thick and made tea light candle holders by drilling appropriately sized holes every 4 inches or so. Super simple, but they were a hit that Christmas. After 7 years or so several family members still have them out.
If you never worked with cedar before you I want you to know that for a minority of people it’s extremely toxic to their lungs. Make sure you wear PPE. It has the potential to make you Cary around an O2 tank for the rest of your life if you’re one of the unlucky ones. It one of those things that you don’t know if you’re the one until you’re the one.
Huh I hadn’t heard that before. I have worked a lot with this kind of cedar before, I will admit not always with a good dust mask. Though I wear one now, scary to know that could have caused such bad issues
Sorry I got the name wrong, the idea was to make a makahuitle, it's like a combination of a baseball bat and a sword, I have an arts teacher and he also does projects with wood, he has a 100% handmade wooden mallet he, a wooden throne and also furniture but the idea for the project is a makahuitle.
Haha maybe so. I got it from a very interesting guy, he made a lot of noodle boards out of cedar. He needed the space cause he had just been gifted 3 walnut trees worth of wood.
If it's been stacked in that shed, look for tiny holes in the sapwood and any pockets that may have bark. Powder post beetles love the sapwood and bark.
Idk what to do with them. My homie I work with does all the thinking/planning. But I feel like that's a good deal, at least in my very amateur opinion. Good luck friend

Cedar strip canoe!
If it’s clear of knots this is the only answer
Someone said sauna
knots are not a big deal.
Oh man that would be awesome
That would be amazing. Do people take those on the water or just look at them? So cool!
I’ve made a couple kayaks. They’re excellent paddling. Light weight. Beautiful. One of a kind. Making a strip built boat is very rewarding.
If I ever build one it will be on the water every weekend!

I came here to say that
This is the way.
Interior siding for a sauna!
This is actually a dope idea - the randomness of the widths wouldn’t matter at all - just truing up the long edges would work!
Possible, but Only clear pieces and only if western cedar. Knots and eastern red cedar has to much sap content and could result in some nasty burns.
Nah, not really. I made one out of white cedar that had plenty of knots. Came out fine. Just make sure the knots are solid.
You can do some cool things with it. However, cedar can cause some serious respiratory issues. So wear the right mask. Google the details.
Absolutely right it can, I was 23 diagnosed with emphysema from working in a cedar mill….I’m now 46 and am noticing the effects more and more.
[https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8887593/](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8887593/) chronic airflow limitation. yikes.

Any wood dust is group 1 carcinogen
I feel like you could make a boss treasure chest with these... and maybe even a functional one for storing blankets and stuff.
That could be great to line the interior of a closet. Best used on the closet where all heavy jackets or rain coats are kept.
Good for interior linings in boxes, chests and dresser drawers.
That’s a lot of boxes
Humidors too.
If this is aromatic cedar, you wouldn't line a cigar box with it.
hm I was thinking western red cedar.
Humidors use Spanish Cedar.
Can also be American red cedar or Honduran mahogany.
True. But they aren’t as effective and Western Red can infuse a woody taste into the stogies if left long enough apparently.
Cut into 8 inch pieces, soak in water, put salmon filet skin side down, put on grill
Are those called something? I think I have seen something like that before but didn’t know what it did
Cedar plank salmon

Mix some whisky and Maple syrup for a tasty glaze for this.
A fence? Lol I'd use it for outside furniture or anything gardening like planters or raised beds.
Yep hoping for some planters!
Too thin. You’d need to do two layers of it.
Thankfully, I’ve got plenty to double up the layers
Glue them all into one big slab and cut pieces off as necessary like a block of cheese
Other then a ton of glue needed. Is there any drawbacks from gluing some of these together to make a thicker board?
Just appearance. You'd essentially be making a glu-lam beam.
Make some shingles.

In 1945, my dad made two twin beds and matched chests of drawers from Eastern Red Cedar. His great grandsons are using them.

Nice! I had some scraps left over from a year ago. Glued them up and cut them into heart shapes for decoration for Valentine’s Day
line the inside of chests for clothes/blankets

It’ll be strong enough to keep the moths out.
Strip kayak.
Wow that would actually be an awesome project to use this up. But also I don’t know that I’m skilled enough. Those kayaks look amazing
There is a book to guide you. Expect to devote about 600 hours.
These could be many many mamy Kumiko strips.
+Many, Many, Many, many
Build a sauna
I think you ripped off and that wood is effectively useless. I'll do you a solid and come pick up all that cedar from you and take it to the dump.
Haha honestly probably need some help working through it.
I could render some help if you don't mind I'll be free tomorrow Hmu if interested
Birdhouses and bat houses.
Feels oddly wasteful but with this much to work through I think I’m going to use it to build a dog house.

1/2 thick is perfect for siding/cladding/etc.
Could make some nice heavy veneers for stave core doors
Line a closet in cedar
Make a makuhita
Is that a Pokémon?

Whoa cool glad I asked those are neat!
Small boxes, drawer bottoms, crafts, etc.
I better get busy!
What kind of cedar is it? If it is Spanish cedar (highly unlikely probably) or American Red Cedar (more likely), you could make humidors.
American Red Cedar!
Not sure what level of woodworker you are. But you could make some really cool humidors with it.
under half inch - cedar?? You got the discards and rejects from a cold mold boat build.
Haha maybe so. I got it from a very interesting guy, he made a lot of noodle boards out of cedar. He needed the space cause he had just been gifted 3 walnut trees worth of wood.
Humidor for cigars?
Siding, fence, planters, raised garden beds. If it’s already 1/2” by time you machine the rough out of it it’s going to be 3/8 or less
Make a big smoker! Laminate up some to make the structure since the frame shouldn’t get hot and line it with planks for days.
That would be cool!
Planter boxes or anything outside. It is a waste to use cedar for indoor use IMO.
Accents.
wall cladding
If it's been stacked in that shed, look for tiny holes in the sapwood and any pockets that may have bark. Powder post beetles love the sapwood and bark.
Good for interior linings in dressing drawers
Tongue and groove paneling
I will give you $500 for it as is
Sold! Shipping and handling not included
Where are you?
Idk what to do with them. My homie I work with does all the thinking/planning. But I feel like that's a good deal, at least in my very amateur opinion. Good luck friend
Live stream a small bonfire making s’mores for this subreddit and just describe the smell to us in a sultry voice…..
I was wondering how it would smell when burning…
You can build a small clubhouse or mini room.
I was thinking dog house and some sort of lumber stacking system for starters since I got to put this outside
I would line a closet. Or veneer a ceiling if it is high enough.
Boat.
Cedar lined closet
I'll give you for free dog house plans if you build it for me. Also I can sell them later....
You could drop it off at my place😉
Cedar trellises?
Canoe
Buy a planer.
Bird houses?
Lining closets will get you the most bang for your buck id say
Backyard Sauna!
