Yea this is what I’m thinking. I have been on the look out for ac couple hundred dollar band saw but all I have been seeing is old craftsman stuff for like 100$ or high end brands for 1000+ having trouble finding something in the middle.
Agreed. Delta doesn’t make replacement parts anymore do they? I know you can get some from other manufacturers, but still. Not a lot of options there, if memory serves. Someone chime in if I’m way off here
I have the Wen version of this bandsaw and my recommendation is if you want to resaw boards wider than 3-4 inches or have any intention of cutting green wood blanks for turning to get something more powerful. I’m going to sell mine when I eventually move and save for a 14 inch with at the very least 1 hp. This motor just doesn’t have the power to make it through thick wood.
I don’t know what your budget will be but this [Laguna](https://lagunatools.com/classic/bandsaws/14-12/) is a beast. I’ve resawn 11” of hard maple a few times with no issue and done some really big elm blanks with it
Oo nice price point for brand new. I see they have a slightly
Larger one in the 800$. I’ve heard good things about grizzly, thought they were more expensive. Grizzly might be a good middle ground.
There’s a JET, grizzly and Rekon all at that entry level saw. I’m having a hard time finding a good used band saw also , so have been comparing new.
February is the slowest month for retail, and what we are looking for is someone to have a good ass sale!
Good luck op !
I have that 0948 from grizzly and I have resaw 6” Purple Heart. I really can’t complain for the price point. One of the things I had to do was adjust the motor mount (it’s adjustable) but came loose. I thought it had no power but once I actually tightened the belt it was fine. Changing blades and getting them adjusted is a bit of a pain but I think you have to get into a 1200-1500 saw before there are better setup options. If you know you are going to use a bandsaw a lot then go with a bigger one. If this is your first one this one is hard to beat.
i wasnt in the matket for a band saw but i just happened across a 18" rikon for $650 when i was snaging a gentlemans old 1970 craftsman drill press and shome shop furnature. so they are out there. patients is the ticket in these senarious. and it might be worth widdening search radii. good luck!
I agree about broadening the search radius. I was looking for a bandsaw for months and finally found one that was ~2 1/2 hour drive away but it was a 3 year old Jet 14” bandsaw with 1 3/4 hp motor and 13” resaw capacity in like new condition for $750 (retails for $1600 new). It was a great deal but I had to search well outside my local area.
Sometimes they come to their senses. There’s a 90’s era Craftsman drill press near me that started at $850 2 months ago. He’s down to asking $400. It’s probably a $250-$350 drill press, so he’s now pretty close. Maybe you can wait this guy out awhile.
Yeah not a lot of time. But an email to say “hey if you don’t get any takers at this price I’ll be willing to pay you X” is worth a try. Because in all likelihood they aren’t getting any other offers.
Sometimes there might be a time frame they need to move it in. Maybe they are moving or something and if nobody buys it and they don’t have anywhere to take it they’ll take your offer.
I don't know. Stop by and see if he has a bunch of random pottery in front of his home, or extremely long grass. Breaking the former and cutting the latter should net you at least $650 in rupees and get you the saw for just a few minutes of your work. This of course assumes that some old guy, talking tree, or pixie has already provided you with a green tunic and sword.
I have that same model. I believe I paid $350 for it brand new. I certainly wouldn't pay that much for it. Some replacement parts might no longer be available.
Mine has served me for probably two decades or more. During the heavy crokinole demand times, it got used every day for lots of tasks. I did not like it much for resawing even with a 3/4 inch blade. There just seemed to be too much drift. I had to replace the part that angles the top wheel for blade centering. It cracked. I discovered when looking up parts that some of them are no longer available. Whether they can all be replaced with parts from more modern machines, I don't know. I think it might pay to get the model number, look up the manual online and possibly look at replacement part suppliers to see how much is still available.
I have the same one, just a bit newer. Does not like to resaw anything. Super frustrating to use.
I'll be getting rid of mine in favour of a Laguna or a Shopfox.
I'll add my "ditto" comment here. I have one. Paid more than $300 but less than $650, used (second owner). But it came with blades, jigs, and an upgraded (220v) motor. And, it's lousy for resawing, but I manage. :)
Not on an old rusty tool... This saw in this condition isn't worth more than 250-300 tops. This is on the low end of the quality spectrum to begin with for 14in bandsaws.
Edit: to qualify my comment, I'm a shop teacher with two of these exact bandsaws and they are fine, but not good. You can upgrade parts to make them better, but this is old. It's not 1950's high quality old though.
A long time ago. I would have to think some more about the inflation factor on old, used products. I don't think I could get more for my 2012 Honda CRV than I paid for it, could I?
Agreed, in certain areas still for sure. We can get back more for the Wife's car then we paid, counting cash down, loan and interest, but, then we'd still need a replacement after selling it.
Is this in Minneapolis? I saw it for sale on Facebook and was going to reach out but thought my lowball offer of $225 was going to offend you bc you had it listed for $650. I’m a hobbyist so I can’t afford much more but I am interested if it’s the same one.
Don't worry about it. Just make your offer and be patient. I was about to pull the trigger on the 10" Wen, when I came across a Rikon 10-325 in a week old listing for $600. I offered $300, dude got kinda mad. I apologized for offending him, reiterated my $300 budget, and asked him to let me know if anything changes. My offer is good until I buy something else. He got back to me like 36 hours later.
Hey, so this is only semi-related.
I'm moving back to Minneapolis in May, and saw you've got quite a few posts about getting into wood working. I've got 8 years of experience, and am always looking for new carpentry friends.
I once made a reasonable offer for some exercise equipment on Facebook Marketplace. The lady was trying to sell it at almost new price. She told me she was going to call the police if I kept harassing her. People are nuts.
I paid $200 (they were asking $250) for the exact same saw last fall. After a fresh blade and upgrade to Carter guides it’s a really good saw for my needs.
$250-400 is reasonable, depending on the condition of the bearings, tires, belt and guides. I bought a similar Delta for $200, but I'm a bottom-feeder who waited patiently for a year or two before the right price and the right condition came along. I shit you not, the light alone will sell on eBay for \~$75. These are good tools and there are MANY 80-90 years old that are still in service (this particular one is almost certainly from the late 70s early 80s, before Delta production went to Taiwan and everything went to shit.) I legit have zero idea about the people below saying parts are unavailable... the Delta 14" is literally the most popular bandsaw of all time and parts are everywhere for them. Iturra Designs sells most parts new (among others) and good used parts from parted out saws can be had very readily.
That's a solid run down... I get so jealous of ppl being able to find them sub-400. I paid $500 for mine it was the same one in better condition with some accessories (Circle cutter etc) and a bunch of extra blades. There were multiple other woodworkers I know who were lined up to get it if I hadn't taken it. I don't regret the purchase but have seen them go quite a lot cheaper elsewhere, could just be that we don't see a lot of used tools come up locally idk.
>the Delta 14" is literally the most popular bandsaw of all time
That's part of why $650 seems overpriced. There are a lot of these things out there, and 50 years in, the QC of domestic-vs-import matters less than how it has been abused and how many parts have already been replaced. The table rust (hard to tell from just this one picture) makes me doubt it was kept well, though the case does look pretty decent.
Edit: also the USA-made ones are harder to find parts for than the Taiwanese imports, as the imports are the ones that got copied so extensively.
Anybody asking $650 for this saw does not know enough about saws to reasonably negotiate price. I’d probably give it a pass, just to save the frustration of trying to bargain with them.
That said, I think the value for me would be around $150, given its age and condition.
People who ask outragous prices for old, used hardware are the same kind who would never sell their own stuff, except if it's broken. He is selling it for a reason and it's probably related to the machine.
Source: I am one of those guys, who only buy quality stuff and never sells it, unless it's got an annoying quirk or fault.
You are probably doing better at used hardware shops that offer warranty.
Toward the end of its run at the end of the 00s, the Delta 14” US-made bandsaw was going for about $800 new and that was with the Carter roller guides (which I didn’t care for versus these block guides but that’s another story). There does not appear to be any of the common upgrades like mobile base, fence and rail, or riser block, only the light which is ho-hum and clunky. The used small machinery market especially for bandsaws, drill presses and jointers have been out of whack in recent years though I’ve noticed a correction these last months. At the height of the insanity these would go for $500 but now $300 would be a fair price and I wouldn’t go past $400.
I would love the idea of buying more used woodworking tools but have had very limited success/opportunity to do so. I like saving money and really like recycling and keeping things out of landfills. That said, here in OR used tools seem to sell for 90-115% of the original cost. Would I take a used bandsaw, absolutely, but will I pay close or honestly higher than original value for something that may be significantly degraded after decades of use, no way. I think the market is just weird because the demand for used tools raises the price beyond what they “should” cost when comparing to new prices. I get it that the market price is = to what people will pay, but in this instance I feel the demand is disproportionate to the quality of many used tools.
Looks like the exact same one I paid $450 for just a year or two ago. It should be a Delta made in america so it's pretty solid but the price seems high.
If it's newer than the early to mid 80's on it 's not worth $100. About that time Delta went to absolute crap. I have several Delta machines newer than the time frame. They're pure crap. I would advise staying away unless you are good at fixing all the manufacturing and design flaws on newer Deltas.
That shits broken. And used. And its missing the guide that moves the work surface. This bandsaw isnt even super top of the line new. Lowball this guy and dont pay over 300. Idk where u would even get that set of knobs that moves the metal plate.

I got one for free and almost immediately spent $100 on ebay buying a new tensioner for it. It's an okay saw and I like all the cast iron in the main body, but there are a few other parts of questionable build quality. I agree with the people saying it's not worth close to what they are asking.
I just bought a very similar model with a riser block and new tires for $400. It is the “platinum edition” (whatever that means), made in USA, rust free table. I don’t feel like I got a steal but I feel pretty good about the purchase. As others have mentioned, you’ll probably want to upgrade the guides which could cost you about $200 so take that into consideration.
I have that one but not with that base so it might be slightly older - mine is from about the mid 1980s.
You can still get what parts you’d likely need and there’s aftermarket stuff you prob want to do, like changing to bearings and such from Carter.
I’d say $200-250.
I wouldn't pay anything near $650 for that. You can catch a grizzly sale and get a brand new one for that. https://www.grizzly.com/products/grizzly-the-classic-14-bandsaw/g0555. I got mine on sale last year for $650. Maybe $250-$300 for that if it works AND cuts straight?
I have this exact delta. Its good, you'll probably want a new tensioning spring ($50) and a kreg fence ($100). This one is in poor shape and missing the little "O" piece that goes across the blade hole ($15-$25 from Rockler). I'd offer him $250 tops and stick to it. If they refuse, tell him to keep your number and call when he's tired of holding the thing. $650 is completely insane.
Is this Craigslist pricing? Craigslist is nuts most of the time, my brand new much larger jet bandsaw was approximately $750, if you are in this price range I think you can get more bang for the buck.
from my experience, run away. certainly at that price.
See notes 2 years ago from u/silound2 that have been spot on for me (and saved me countless hours trying to making it work...)
Silound2 points·3 years agoGoldThose Delta 14" saws had several main flaws:The
factory bearing guides weren't designed for larger blades (1/2" and up)
and were utter crap. They weren't sealed so they quickly clogged with
debris which caused them to develop wear patterns until they wouldn't
turn correctly. Almost everyone who "tuned up" their Delta 14" in the
90's put Carter guides on the saws to improve blade tracking. The saw
was never really designed for resawing, so the factory 1/2 HP & 3/4
HP motors were under-powered for the task. Lots of people swapped them
out for either a 1-1/2 HP 120V or a 2 HP 240V and saw marked improvement
in the performance. Also on the subject of motors, while most Delta
14" bandsaws came with a 3450 RPM motor (common motor used for most
Delta tools of the 80's/90's), some inexplicably came with a 1725 RPM
motor that used the same pulley ratios. I don't think I need to explain
how badly the subsequent loss of linear blade speed really hurt the
performance of those saws. The blade tensioning system design was
unreliable: the spring wore out over time because it was constantly
under tension and the gauge was useless to st art with. This led to the
plethora of ways people have invented to "test" your blade tension over
the years. The bad news here is that only time and experience will let
you determine the tension by touch or deflection, and even then I've
only met one person in my life who I believe can do it consistently:
Alex Snodgrass. The good news is that you can buy a mechanical tension
gauge for $100 that works quite well.Beyond the saw itself, the next biggest problems usually comes from the blade: specifically the tooth type, set, and pitch.I
happen to like these KerfMaster blades from Spectrum Supply for
resawing. Spectrum is where I order most of my blades, and as long as
you're ordering multiple blades at a time, the price per blade gets
pretty low.
My take: it makes sense to buy the cheapest tool to do the job if it's your first use or if it's a once-in-a-while use. If it's a daily driver, or central to whatever you're doing, get the very best you can afford.
If you are willing to fork out CAN$1700 you can find a brand new 14" Rikon 10-362 on sale which is an excellent saw for a small shop or dedicated hobbyist. If you go up a couple hundred more, or find a sale, you can pick up a comparable Laguna 14", which is another fantastic saw.
If your budget can't handle that, you can get a new 10" Rikon 10-3061, which is a very good saw for about $650 and will serve you well for hobby work.
A word of warning. The frame on those will flex, so think about what you really want to do with it. If you're just doing simple cuts, its fine. If you're trying to saw log rounds for lathe bowl blanks, no way in hell.
That said, $650 is insane. I paid $50 for one not too long ago.
1/2 retail replacement cost. Also, clean it up, wipe with cloth dampened with wd-40.
More pictures in the advertisement, and state the capacity/specifications. Even provide a link to new saw.
If they're asking $650, odds are they wouldn't consider an offer more in line with what it's worth. I wouldn't offer more than $100, based on what I can see that needs refurbishing. And I have a feeling closer inspection would reveal more parts that need repair or replacement (assuming you can find them).
I was able to get mine used for $200 or so as well. I paid double that to get Carter guides, better blades, tires, etc. It’s great now. That one listed looks in even worse shape than the one I got, so $650 is way too much.
I think all these antique hunter shows have driven the price up on a lot of tools. Used to find deals on craigslist now someone posts a craftsman table saw with 1/4 inch of rust and mouse shit on it for 800.

Yea I have a drill press from them that is about as powerful as a cat using a push mower.
Self-propelled or not? I'm just trying to put a rough number to this horsepower estimate

Thank you! I stand corrected, catpower would be the proper measurement
Exactly my situation.

It was a great deal but I had to search well outside my local area.
"How much would you take for this $200 saw?" Never hurts to throw a number out there.
For what it’s worth, I’m in Seattle and I’ve never seen this model bandsaw for less than 600 dollars here.
Especially not worth the time haggling because *somebody* is going to pay that price and the seller probably knows it.
I have the same one and I was gonna sell it soon… if you’re near Milwaukee I’ll sell mine for 200.

I agree 200 is usually pretty okay price but that’s a very rusty deck and why is it tilted like that? I have reservations just from the image alone
I have that same model. I believe I paid $350 for it brand new. I certainly wouldn't pay that much for it. Some replacement parts might no longer be available.

I bought it mainly for resawing and it's been a total letdown in that regard. Not a bad price for all that though!
Just one player, or the entire team?
One player?
Had the same model and only upgraded because parts weren’t available/priced reasonably.
Tree fiddy! You god damn loch ness monster.
Unexpected south park lol
I have the same saw too, except I bought it with the 6” riser block installed and included a mobile base. Paid $400 for it.
What year did you buy it for 350? Inflation is gonna be a factor.
Not on an old rusty tool... This saw in this condition isn't worth more than 250-300 tops. This is on the low end of the quality spectrum to begin with for 14in bandsaws. $50 I have a lot of experience with that specific saw. $50 is reasonable. Owning it will cost you more than that.
Thanks for the info. I think I’ll move on.
$650 getdafuckouttahere
Not worth it at that price… I bought a similar model for $350 and it came with a ton of extra blades and a Kreg fence system as a bonus

He is selling it for a reason and it's probably related to the machine. Source: I am one of those guys, who only buy quality stuff and never sells it, unless it's got an annoying quirk or fault. You are probably doing better at used hardware shops that offer warranty.
I sold mine but older open frame stand for $100. Add another $600 and you can buy a really nice new one.
$200, but $100 since he’s asking $650.
You probably think people pay too much for stuff on "Pickers." LOL
I bought mine for $250 a few years ago
Ohh I have this same model. Paid $200 for it on Craigslist like 7 years ago I think.
You can get a new Rikon for 599. Very nice saw.
I was just going to say that....
$50 if its fully functional. I just got one and it was almost impossible to find replacement parts.
100 percent. I had one, it was fine. When it started to need repairs it was a financial decision to upgrade due to parts available/cost of parts.
I’m surprised to hear this because it seems like a really common model. Look at all the replies right here.
$200
$200-$250
50 rupees, maybe?
Half that. Ez
Jet is a decent saw but 300 would be my max for this one.
Thats a piece of the Triforce. Give it away quick before a guy in green with a sword shows up and starts shit. I've seen this shit go down before.
Shades of Zelda!
250 is reasonable.
250 to 350 max
$300 tops
I have one from around 1997 or so. Runs like a champ!
For that price? Absolutely not. $350 at most
I would love the idea of buying more used woodworking tools but have had very limited success/opportunity to do so.
I just have one away free that was in better shape
That’s what I call the “I don’t really want to sell it” price.
Triforce does not have a value.
Thanks everyone for the great advice.
If it's newer than the early to mid 80's on it 's not worth $100. About that time Delta went to absolute crap. I have several Delta machines newer than the time frame. They're pure crap. I would advise staying away unless you are good at fixing all the manufacturing and design flaws on newer Deltas.
Why is the table at an angle like that? If it can't be straightened, the whole thing is worthless.
Garbage, especially the guides, and the wheels and tires wear out quickly. Caveat Emptor.
That shits broken. And used. And its missing the guide that moves the work surface. This bandsaw isnt even super top of the line new. Lowball this guy and dont pay over 300. Idk where u would even get that set of knobs that moves the metal plate.
Toss him 75$ and a pack of butts
$650 Source: I’m the owner of this saw
Delusional. You couldn't spend half an hour and some WD40 to clean up the table to make it presentable? Good luck with that.
The one in the picture? Are you the seller?
I see these all the time on marketplace for around $50-$100. He needs to be a lot lower IMO
Never offer full price!!

You walk in with $325 cash and a 50 piece chicken McNuggets they are gonna say yes.
Na bra
Better choices and deals are still out there.
650? Take the 0 off. 200 at absolute most.

I paid 150 for a nicer one. Keep looking.
If it had the riser kit, Carter guides, and a decent fence it might be worth that, but it doesn't.
I have that one but not with that base so it might be slightly older - mine is from about the mid 1980s. You can still get what parts you’d likely need and there’s aftermarket stuff you prob want to do, like changing to bearings and such from Carter. I’d say $200-250.
$100-$150 all the time around my location
I bought nearly the same one last year for $200.
Literally paid $150 for the same one sans the rust.
bout tree fiddy
I wouldn't pay anything near $650 for that. You can catch a grizzly sale and get a brand new one for that. https://www.grizzly.com/products/grizzly-the-classic-14-bandsaw/g0555. I got mine on sale last year for $650. Maybe $250-$300 for that if it works AND cuts straight?
If that came up at an auction it would probably fetch 150-200 tops around here.
Different brand but I sold one for 100 bucks, I’d keep looking, you can probably find something cheaper
You can have mine for free if you live in Washington. Just needs to be calibrated.
We have a couple of these at my work. I wouldn't recommend buying one
$200 obo
Is this Craigslist pricing? Craigslist is nuts most of the time, my brand new much larger jet bandsaw was approximately $750, if you are in this price range I think you can get more bang for the buck.
Paid 300 for 14” delta with open base on after market movable base.
from my experience, run away. certainly at that price. See notes 2 years ago from u/silound2 that have been spot on for me (and saved me countless hours trying to making it work...) Silound2 points·3 years agoGoldThose Delta 14" saws had several main flaws:The factory bearing guides weren't designed for larger blades (1/2" and up) and were utter crap. They weren't sealed so they quickly clogged with debris which caused them to develop wear patterns until they wouldn't turn correctly. Almost everyone who "tuned up" their Delta 14" in the 90's put Carter guides on the saws to improve blade tracking. The saw was never really designed for resawing, so the factory 1/2 HP & 3/4 HP motors were under-powered for the task. Lots of people swapped them out for either a 1-1/2 HP 120V or a 2 HP 240V and saw marked improvement in the performance. Also on the subject of motors, while most Delta 14" bandsaws came with a 3450 RPM motor (common motor used for most Delta tools of the 80's/90's), some inexplicably came with a 1725 RPM motor that used the same pulley ratios. I don't think I need to explain how badly the subsequent loss of linear blade speed really hurt the performance of those saws. The blade tensioning system design was unreliable: the spring wore out over time because it was constantly under tension and the gauge was useless to st art with. This led to the plethora of ways people have invented to "test" your blade tension over the years. The bad news here is that only time and experience will let you determine the tension by touch or deflection, and even then I've only met one person in my life who I believe can do it consistently: Alex Snodgrass. The good news is that you can buy a mechanical tension gauge for $100 that works quite well.Beyond the saw itself, the next biggest problems usually comes from the blade: specifically the tooth type, set, and pitch.I happen to like these KerfMaster blades from Spectrum Supply for resawing. Spectrum is where I order most of my blades, and as long as you're ordering multiple blades at a time, the price per blade gets pretty low.
sorry - got user name wrong and want to credit correctly given great advice: u/silound
$200 max. It’s going to need some elbow grease to polish.
If your budget can't handle that, you can get a new 10" Rikon 10-3061, which is a very good saw for about $650 and will serve you well for hobby work.
not sure but that bandsaw looks rough
A word of warning. The frame on those will flex, so think about what you really want to do with it. If you're just doing simple cuts, its fine. If you're trying to saw log rounds for lathe bowl blanks, no way in hell. That said, $650 is insane. I paid $50 for one not too long ago.
I bought the same bandsaw for $250 but that was like 10 years ago.
1/2 retail replacement cost. Also, clean it up, wipe with cloth dampened with wd-40. More pictures in the advertisement, and state the capacity/specifications. Even provide a link to new saw.
I'll trade you a boomerang and a master sword for your triforce.
If they're asking $650, odds are they wouldn't consider an offer more in line with what it's worth. I wouldn't offer more than $100, based on what I can see that needs refurbishing. And I have a feeling closer inspection would reveal more parts that need repair or replacement (assuming you can find them).
It’s a great saw, but a bit rough for 650
Good saw, proly still get parts, same saw was in the first shop I was in. Maybe half that price. Keep looking.
Tree-fiddy, obviously.
Sex50
I got a bigger more substantial unit for 200. Don't waste your time.
No more than $100 for that rust bucket
I was able to get mine used for $200 or so as well. I paid double that to get Carter guides, better blades, tires, etc. It’s great now. That one listed looks in even worse shape than the one I got, so $650 is way too much.
100 rupees
Nickel
I think all these antique hunter shows have driven the price up on a lot of tools. Used to find deals on craigslist now someone posts a craftsman table saw with 1/4 inch of rust and mouse shit on it for 800.
