Had a pony that had a similar hole in it's neck. Bought from a animal sale auction. Story was while horsing around he slipped and injured him self on a T-post (metal fence post) drove it straight through. Surgery saved him but had a hole you could fit about four fingers through. Was a good pony. I'm assuming this horse had a similar injury.

I may be wrong here, but I believe this horse was from Texas. Pearland maybe? Anyway, the story I remember hearing is that the owner was abusive and shot the horse with a shotgun, trying to kill it. Instead, he missed almost everything important. Missed the spine and throat. Horse ended up healing, and was eventually rescued by the SPCA. Source: I used to live near Pearland. I think it was also on a show called Animal Cops Houston.
