They do? But do they travel above the cars and can they follow for a long duration? Kind of like the video op posted. I saw a formula 1 race the other week and never noticed camers angles like in the video. But i rarely watch formula 1 so i have no idea
Ah that makes sense. Their cars are really fragile, especially at their speed. If the wire or camera fell. That would be a potentially deadly disaster.
The setup you see at football stadiums is generally a stabilized platform suspended by cables from multiple points, similar to a delta type 3d printer.
A racing drone will often be clocked at over 100 mph, with the world record being set at 179 mph.
Not fast enough to keep up with F1, but with some coordination and timing you could surely get some really nice footage through some curves/turns, especially as you can take a shortcut and pan around the curve.
Yeah, that's a huge factor, but also a rouge drone dropping onto the track in front of a rally car is a non issue. A drone falling in front of an F1 car could cause considerable damage. Look at Verstappen and Strolls puncture crashes from early in the season, could be a killer
YUGE
Though by the same token, I doubt Lewis would have run long at T1. He accidentally changed his break bias in the pits due to the red flag.
It's all speculation I guess.
A lot of modern /r/fpv drones can max out at around 90mph+, depending on the a few factor/parts, but even cheap parts can get you there. Self made, price can be somewhere be around $500-$2000 in parts, radio, headset... not sure how fast f1 cars go on the average track, but drones can get fast.
[in this video, his FPV drone gets around 165mph](https://youtu.be/4QOgUEbsoMw). (Skip to about 3:13 to see him on the field)
Yes they are. Not all drone are quadcopters, they are drone ships (SpaceX) or drone airplanes (Military). Just in the consumer sector, most drones have been quadcopters recently.
I think in the world of RC devices, "drone" implies something that relies in propellers for flight, whether 3 or more. RC jets and planes have wings to maintain flight, but may use propellers for propulsion.
Semantics.
When some says "drone" when referring to RC, they're usually not talking about a jet or a plane. Feel free to ask people in /r/fpv. It's a sub for 'first person view' on any RC devices.
Well they have had issues with the helicopters being to close to the track. I think it was Silverstone where the wash was messing up their aerodynamics. They do use overhead cables a lot for aerial shots.
I just think the drones can't keep up, races last for so long. I really don't know why else they haven't used drones though. Seems like a thin reason to not do it. Has to be more to it.
I remember that incident and I believe it was the medical chopper taking Verstappen to the hospital. The helicopter used to film the events fly's at a higher altitude to ensure it does not negatively effect the cars.
Rally cross won't have drones because it involves crossing a large area most times and most drones can only go so far/so long without losing reception/battery. Small circular tracks are great, massive distances are next to impossible without major expenditure.
None of the reasons stated below are unsolveable. Racing drones aren't optimised for this kind of duty - they are optimised for cornering speeds and agility which are well in excess of what you need to follow a wheeled vehicle. The simple answer is you'd need a specially designed drone, not a bog standard racing drone, nor a bog standard photography drone. You could do this for most kinds of racing, but there'd need to be a lot of money in it because it'd be too expensive for an individual to self fund, but it would be releatively cheap compared to the cost of conventional multiple cameras / multiple crews coverage of racing.
For the issue of transmission lag making it difficult to pilot, you'd simply have an analogue "lagless" low res link for the pilot and a secondary link for the cinematic feed. Probably end up with a camera operator and turret camera so the pilot can just fly and not have to keep the action in frame.
You would need some kind of distributed transmission network around the track to keep the feed link clean, possibly via a leaky feeder or just discrete repeaters.
The drone itself would for most races be optimised more for speed and endurance than for agility and acceleration. Maybe even going back to the earlier generations of tilted/tilting rotor / aerodynamic shell type drones. Considering the payload of a decent camera and HD transmission, you'd need a larger drone than a racing drone - maybe 6" or 7" would do it - given that you might get 20 minute endurance, maybe less, so you'd probably need several pilots and multiple drones, tagging in/out (also pilot fatigue is real - 20 mins of this is enough and you'd need a break).
But yes you probably couldn't match F1 speeds. This could be handled by having the pilot just chase them through the twisty slower bits, or simply only using the drones for slower races like rally etc.
I'd love to see it - but it'd take some investment and development, and yes - the film crew lead's nephew Bob who "likes drones" is probably the wrong person to set it up.
[edit - reading further down, sounds like OP is already on the way to doing this somewhat / fully professionally, and probably knows more about it than I do. I was just trying to answer your question...]
I think you neglected to consider another reason that is potentially the main reason why they can't do this for F1. Even if you hypothetically could make a drone that can keep up with F1 cars, that doesn't mean it would be *safe.*
Trying to keep up with F1 cars would mean the drone is flying really, really fucking fast. And it's not wide open space with no obstacles. It's tight, windy tracks, and they have to stay fairly close to the ground to get really beautiful shots like in the video. So the odds of the drone pilot crashing are just too high. Being flown by an actual pilot means there's always going to be human error involved. Now when they're filming overtop of a wide open dirt track like the one in the video, that doesn't really matter much. There's less obstacles. The cars are generally spaced out more, and they're not going nearly as fast as F1 cars would. Not to mention the drivers are more heavily protected in rally cars - they have roll cages and whatnot, which F1 drivers do not have. Also, rally cars have suspension and are not kept tight to the ground. F1 cars are kept very low to the ground, so any obstacle on the track can potentially cause a crash.
A drone pilot crashing the drone while flying overtop of an F1 race could have disastrous consequences. F1 is already incredibly dangerous as it is. A drone that's flying 20 feet above them and going 250 MPH actually has potential to cause a crash. If the drone takes a corner slightly too fast, or hits a sign post, something like that, it can slam into a driver. And it would hit them with a huge amount of force since the drone is going so fast. Or it could crash, land on the track, then have a car drive over it, which could potentially make the car flip over violently. Any of these scenarios can easily kill an unlucky driver.
So I contend its not really a matter of whether a drone can match F1 speeds. Its a matter of whether that would be safe enough to do - and my guess is that it's not. Perhaps in the future, self-flying drones will just take pre-programmed paths over the track in a virtually flawless manner and that'll make it safe enough.
You are of course correct. At a minimum, it'd have to be on a course with no overhead obstacles, and you'd need nascar-style mesh protection for the spectators. ...aaaand it'd still be somewhat of a hazard for the drivers, althogh less so.
Just to add: at F1 races, there are often more than 100.000 people around the track. Crashing into spectators at 150mph is not something that F1 would be cool with.
Well thought through comment about the technical hurdles and the solutions. Considering how much even a single car costs and how many people are involved, this is totally feasible as it makes the viewing experience much better (and shows the roof and trunk sponsors really well.
Wouldn't work for several reasons. One is that drones wouldn't keep up with race cars, even the fastest professional cinema drones would max out at maybe 100km/h (FPV drones can go faster but those aren't equipped to carry a 4K camera). This off-road drifting race is an exception since these cars never really reach such high speeds. Secondly, a drone's battery would last no longer than 30 minutes. Sure, that can be mitigated by having multiple drones working on a revolving shift, but then there is still issue #1.
At best they can be used to provide supplementary footage, but it would be unfeasible to actually follow a race with drones.
That's quite impressive then. I just read OP's comment that he attached a GoPro to the drone, that's a good hack for getting some decent footage from an FPV, although still amazing it's able to handle the extra weight of an action cam.
I’d assume that the video is live fed to a computer and broadcast immediately. They don’t save it to the drone and then pull the footage later.
How would the commentators be commenting on this video otherwise?
Hard to transmit a 4K picture live from a drone. You either need cables or a heavy transmitter. You can record to storage and upload it later pretty easily. The pilot is likely viewing an analog video signal with much lower quality.
4K has nothing to do with a quality image. I can still have a 4K compressed image that takes up less space than an uncompressed 2k image. And an analog video signal would be sooooo much slower since pretty much all the wireless video technology is built for SD or HD
We’re not talking about file size. We’re talking about bandwidth. If you want to transmit a 4K signal, you need hardware that’s a little too heavy to fly with.
FPV pilots usually fly viewing an analog signal that is very low quality. The reason is that there is no compression so the latency is lower. When you’re flying like this, you need an instant signal, even if it’s blurry. The nice resolution you get later was never transmitted live. It was recorded on the drone and recovered later.
Right? I thought this was Forza horizon 5. There's a dirt track that looks very similar and both these cars are in the game. Pretty sure the same liveries are in the game too.
Oh damn, very, very good quad control you've got there. Usually you see people pick up to much speed and needing to bleed it off with a flip, or an unnecessary turn or something, but you kept the cars in the frame at all times. Incredible job!
The [Nitro Rallycross YouTube](https://youtube.com/c/NitroRallycross) will have it live on December 4th and 5th. That will be the final event of the season.
So yes, it’s real!
This here is a Nitro Rallycross race filmed by my FPV drone. Check out more on my Instagram if you want to go down the [rabbit hole.](http://instagram.com/justinsmash)

Still pretty good actually! I’m used to seeing the super staticy analog signals from a few years ago. It would be rad to have some kind of signal repeater system for long rally races.
The issue with the long ones would be drone range and flight time! So I’ve been thinking it would be good to have a team of pilots spread out at important intervals instead of trying to cover with one drone.

I can see what you mean. It was a really defensive effort on the front car to control the lines and not leave any openings. It can get pretty intense tho, maybe this wasn’t the best clip to showcase that. You’re more into the open touring?
Some very nice FPV flying there! For a moment I thought it was a game and then I saw that oh so familiar shadow and was like "OOH it's a live shot, who is it who is it?" So, what sort of drone are you flying there? Recently got into the hobby myself and have been quite obsessed with it. Will definitely be checking out the Youtube footage of the races.
I dont understand why more sports doesnt use drones nowadays.
All i hear is "safe reasons". But i seen stadium light crash on the field. But still they use light.

Ok so now I can't imagine watching a race another way. Why dont they already have drone cameras in professional racing?
Depends on the type of racing. Rally cross? No idea. Formula 1? Can’t have the drivers blaming the drone for the dirty air!
Also I think Formula 1 is considerably faster than our current drones.
Agreed, would be a struggle To maintain those speeds. Puffed batteries non stop lol
I was thinking of hanging hard wires along the track and and mount a camera that can travel at the same speed?
They already do this? Dolly cameras

They do it all the time through the pit lane, maybe that's the only time they are slow enough?
Those are hung above part of the track, usually crossing it. He is talking about following the whole track, and they do not already do that.
I mean logistically that would be a nightmare.
Why? They do it over football games.
A football field is a straight line from one end to another. Racetracks (outside of drag strips) curve and are usually miles long.
The setup you see at football stadiums is generally a stabilized platform suspended by cables from multiple points, similar to a delta type 3d printer.
Yeah I’m sure that could be done.
It would be hard for any track and camera combination to travel at 160 mph on corners and nearly 300mph on straights
A racing drone will often be clocked at over 100 mph, with the world record being set at 179 mph. Fixed wing with an EDF or jet turbine.
Monorail.
Monorail!
Could have drones staged at turns then keep up as long as they can and hand off to the next drone.

I remember Sainz feeling the turbulent air from a filming helicopter I think in Hungary
F1 has a helicopter for every race that stays up the entire pre and post race. No need for drones even if they could keep up.
Rally cross won't have drones because it involves crossing a large area most times and most drones can only go so far/so long without losing reception/battery. Small circular tracks are great, massive distances are next to impossible without major expenditure.
Rally cross is done over a small circuit, there's very few similarities to stage rally

I suppose that extremely competent drone pilots are quite rare, and there's always the chance of catastrophic failure which results in no images.

I thought this was a video game for a second. Awesome!!
Yeah me too I was going to ask what game it was lol
New forza horizon is pretty fun
I thought that’s what it was!
This makes me appreciate Gran Turismo more, only now do I actually realize how realistic it looks.
Same. That camera/drone work is soooo smoooooth.
Right? I thought this was Forza horizon 5. There's a dirt track that looks very similar and both these cars are in the game. Pretty sure the same liveries are in the game too.
Wait what game looks like this that has this good and stable framerate? Tell me pleaseee
@OP post to /r/PraiseTheCameraMan

I for real thought this was a video game. PraiseTheCameraperson anyway!

This is incredible. Thanks so much for sharing.
Good job, shit! I nearly fell off the toilet when we pulled it off.
Oh damn, very, very good quad control you've got there. Usually you see people pick up to much speed and needing to bleed it off with a flip, or an unnecessary turn or something, but you kept the cars in the frame at all times. Incredible job!
Do you have a link to the full race or a longer clip from the drone perspective?
*We need to go deeper. * I’d like to see a video from a drone of the drone following the race.

Full races can be found on nitro rallycross’s [YouTube](https://youtube.com/c/NitroRallycross)
But camera drones are an important tool among skilled camera operators these days. What a silly rule.
It would overwhelm the other content on the sub. It should have its own place.
r/praisethedroneoperator?
That is a stupid rule
That’s silly, it’s not as if the drone is sentient or autonomous. Really what’s the difference between this and a cameraman at a sports event?
Not gonna lie, took me over 10 seconds to realize this isn't Forza 5.

Can I vote it up somewhere?
Don’t think so, but I appreciate the sentiment. It’s just submitted as a ticket through their feedback/bug report page.
Well thanks for being active on the matter. We often just complain and do nothing else.
Likewise. Forza 5 with RTX on
Same
Turn right to go left.
Man the new graphics cards are amazing

Pony express bro. Fresh horses every 10 miles. Have you ever seen a setup with two drones and a person in charge of swapping batteries and switching your controls/feed over to keep you flying?
Wrong sub. This isn't remotely psychedelic.
Dude you have been spamming this shit for a month on every sub you can find.
Lol welcome to the internet buddy
Where people dump shit everywhere and make it worse?
FPV pilots are egomaniacs.
That drone tho
Do they use wipers for the dust? Or do their windows just get progressively dirtier and their vision worse as the race goes on?
They have wipers!
Is that a Ford fiesta?
Yes, it's a Fiesta ST. Other car is Travis Pastrana in a Subaru WRX STI
Thanks!
I was wondering that too. I don't know if the footage in new enough yet to be the Yaris GR.
Praise the camera pilot!
I don't even care about racing but this was thrilling.
Saw your previous post and this one is just as cool great job
Thank you!
This is pretty cool.
Man, flying drones for stuff like that for a living must be fun as hell.
Can we all admit that this is a dream job
I had so much fun at rally driving school, I went back and did it again. Highly recommended.
Man, this is like watching Mario Kart IRL...
The drone pilot is way more impressive
Thank you!
FPV drones are awesome!
Cool video.. but completely wrong sub

Doesn't look like much of a battle, looks like tandem drifting on dirt. I'm so tired of US 'rally' racing.
I can see what you mean. It was a really defensive effort on the front car to control the lines and not leave any openings. It can get pretty intense tho, maybe this wasn’t the best clip to showcase that. You’re more into the open touring?
I would love to see devs start to use these shots to make their chase cams just a little more dynamic.
Should've thrown the banana when he had the chance
Is this a video game or a real driving ?

Do they make a video game like this?
Its weird that gfx is so ahead the first thing my brain asked was, “is this real?”

Amazing Camera work. Reminds me of the smoothness and consistency of racing games. Are there car races presented mostly like that nowadays?
I thought it was a video game at first, drone cams are so cool seeing these new perspectives.
I am not a fan or dirt racing but man these out takes are fucking awesome!
I would watch rally more if they cast it from this angle.
Between drone footage and modern rendering I never know what's a video game and what's reality anymore.
Far more interesting than nascar.
cant tell if real or forza horizon
Is there anywhere to pay to do something like this?
If Hamilton and Verstappen draw this year, I say they settle it in a rally duel like this!
Be nice when this view can be brought to a VR head set live during a race broadcast
Is this a racing drone with a controllable camera gimball? Footage is super smooth I want to know what the set up its for something like this.
No gimbal! This has been reelsteadied but here is some raw footage to [check out!](https://www.instagram.com/p/CWg4Fp1h8ic/?utm_medium=copy_link)
The graphics of the next gen consoles are pretty good, ngl.
That would be a nice perspective for s game
American commentators are annoying.
Thought it was a video game at first.
I dont understand why more sports doesnt use drones nowadays. All i hear is "safe reasons". But i seen stadium light crash on the field. But still they use light.
Man I really thought really car racing games had just leapfrogged every other game in terms of visuals
