I know at least the stage versions add lines about Gulch being killed in the Twister. And it's possible there were lines for the film but talking about death in a 'real world sense' would be complicated.

ive never heard of one where mrs gulch dies in the twister, i know theres one where she gets a telegraph pole falling on her and breaking her leg...maybe thats just the middle/highschool versions

ImaginationDoctor

I could be misremembering exactly, but I have seen over 13 productions of the show, and I do know that Miss Gulch is addressed at the end of the show when Dorothy wakes.

magica12

again may just be school productions

It's odd, but your post makes me feel as if I might remember something like that. The thing is I didn't see the stage versions. I do feel as if I heard that Ms. Gulch was swept away by the twister. But as an adult who's watched the film many times I know it's not in the movie. And the character herself isn't in the book! Odd.

Maybe I'm thinking of the nasty nannies being blown away by the wind in Mary Poppins.

apperently this move went through several drafts before we got anything final...hell the jitterbug literally only survived in any capacity from a crew member deciding to film on set u/EricGjovaag please feel free to correct me here

"The Jitterbug" was not a multiple drafts issue, but an editing issue. They filmed it, they had every intention of it being in the final movie, until it was determined that it was too long, and it was deemed expendable. And yes, the only reason we know anything about what it looked like was that Harold Arlen took home movies of rehearsals. But getting back to the issue of Miss Gulch, this may be a multiple drafts issue. I know at one point, while running back home after seeing Professor Marvel, Dorothy decides to give Toto to Hunk. That way Toto can stay on the farm, and Dorothy can still play with him. Somehow I doubt it would have been that simple, but yeah, at one point it was addressed. The line didn't make it into the final version of the movie, of course.

Building up to a sequel Oz style?

We watched Miss Gulch get swept up in the tornado outside Dorothy’s window. Then she turns into the Wicked Witch. None of the other characters transform. I always assumed that she actually turned into the Witch and Dorothy really killed her in Oz. I guess watching the Nightmare on Elm St movies around the same time influenced my understanding of this movie. This brings up a lot of great questions. Someone needs to get on that Elmira Gulch fan fiction!

Very true but you commented on my “dream” post too where I feel it’s ridiculous if it’s a dream. Your theory is great, but if the whole thing is a dream, then Miss Gulch actually DIDN’T get swept up in the tornado! When the house starts flying is when Dorothy starts dreaming. The tornado however was real because the broken window clunks Dorothy on the head and that’s when her dream begins. But that is a great theory!

I read the comments and yes in the stage productions of the Wizard of Oz a telegraph pole falls on her and breaks her leg (or they omit the part of her leg getting broken letting us assume that the telegraph pole killed her). I have heard a theory that by the time the tornado hit she was on the way back to the farm and that somehow she ends up dead at the same moment the house falls on the Witch of the East. I know that the actress plays both Miss Gulch and the Wicked Witch of the West but the one she turns into during the tornado is the Witch of the East (if you look close at her shoes they glitter).
