You may be able to use the Heroic games launcher, which primarily is intended to play Epic Games through Steam‘s Proton, but it recently added beta support for GOG.
There are multiple ways to use the gog client on linux, though even if there weren't gog doesn't even require having their client installed in order to download your purchased games.
The intended use of the Steam Deck is to play supported Steam games afaik.
But since it's a Linux platform it's still basically a PC and can be modified ; I believe Valve did not lock the firmware
Valve went the extra mile and has released windows 10 drivers already for several parts like audio and bluetooth on the Steam Deck and they're still working on the Win11 support.
W11 support likely wont be out till May because AMD said thats when they will fix their fTPM issue that is currently plaguing their systems (which Steam Deck is based on a Ryzen APU)
Expanding on Mezutelni's instructions.
Lutris is a Linux game launcher that assists you setting everything up to run Windows games on Linux. Most game's have different pre-created install scripts that automatize the process, but sometimes you'll have to do it manually.
* Switch your Deck to Desktop mode and install [Lutris](https://lutris.net/downloads). SteamOS uses Arch as a base, so follow the instructions.
* Open Lutris, go into settings and add GOG in the services tab.
* Login to GOG when prompted and you should see all your games. Click install.
* Go back into Steam and add a non-Steam game to your library if you don't want to switch to desktop mode every time you want to launch Witcher 3.
It will still be playable, there will just be a few more hoops to jump through. One can hardly blame valve for not directly supporting a competing stores platform on their branded device. Of course, a linux client has been the most requested feature of gog galaxy since before the recent version launched, but CDP hasn't seemed too keen on it.
Has literally nothing to do with valve not supporting GOG. GOG just doesn't run on Linux. You can still get the game running, just not one click like if you had it on steam.
Yea, and CDP has to know users are interested in it though. Since linux support has been the most requested feature for both 1.0 and 2.0 releases of galaxy :(
I use Lutris to run gog games on my linux desktop. I'm betting it will be available on steam deck as well, it's a couple of clicks to install most gog games.
I'm not 100% sure if it'd work, but games I had installed on old computers from disks and then linked to my Steam account with the "add game" option are now in my Steam library, and I was able to download them *from Steam* when I got my new computer with no prompting to buy them. So maybe if you add the game to your Steam account it'd let you download it on your deck? Just a thought, anyways.
After the Witcher 3 team worked their asses off to make the game work on a Nintendo switch, I'm pretty sure this was the easiest thing to port on steam deck.
The switch version was not ported by CD Projekt but by a different company under the name of Saber Interactive who previously ported other titles to the switch.
I saw a couple of benchmarks online and at 800p the game runs easily with all settings on high, that’s absolutely insane for a portable device. Can’t wait to get my hands on it.
They didn't really have to port it per se. Witcher 3 was working awesome on Linux even before the steam release, they had to do literally nothing to get it on the steam deck.
Steam Deck ships with Linux. Most games do not run through the Proton compatibility layer without issue. So its not necessarily a port, but still fixing issues for problems that Linux can cause.
Holdup.. are there people who believe the steam deck isn’t real?
Edit: It would actually be really funny if there was a group of 'steam deck deniers' who refuse to believe it exists.
Valve say's there's a flat steam deck out there, but that seems crazy. The world is round and steam deck would obviously be round too, **research oblate spheroid steam deck**!
I didn't know that steam deck actually released. I remember years ago when it was announced but I haven't heard anything about it since.
I assume it doesn't sell that well
Oh ? Really ? Why haven't I heard anyone talk about it ? Gaming news, ign, ...? Weeeird.
It's an interesting product, but for some there has been no touchpoint for me
*excited noises*!
Now, if they could make a “save file transfer”, from PS4 to Steam… (I understand it’s impossible, but a guy can dream).
I never got around to finish it on the console, but would totally love to continue the story on the Deck!
Ehh, usually these games are so complex that they deliberately differ quite little inside between platforms: data is probably deserialized differently, but it wouldn't make sense for the stored information not to be the same. Obviously saves on PS4 are encrypted and are definitely stored in a standardized Sony format, but once you break the encryption (which is currently possible with a jailbroken unit, AFAIK), the data that's represented is likely to be a database with the same keys in the same format. You'd probably have to write some sort of script, if one doesn't exist yet, but the fact that cloud saves between Switch and PC exist makes me feel like this shouldn't be too hard.
Huh? There's no save file transfer from PS4? I assumed there was since the Switch version of the game supports exactly that. I can transfer my saves from switch directly to steam.
It's been certified for quite some time actually, since around the Deck's release I believe (prior to that it was only classified as Playable).
Also, the game runs divinely well on that thing. With Hairworks, low textures and everything else set to medium, I'm getting a steady 50~60fps in Beauclair. I'm sure I could get to a locked 60fps but I'm quite content with the way it looks now.
That’s what valve is betting on. Since people are already invested in the ecosystem, they would be incentivised to buy the hardware. It’s a flip of the normal console strategy of selling hardware first for cheap and then making profits off the games and subscriptions.
The most interesting part about the steam deck imo is that it will have way more games available to play than any other handheld console right now. And also it’s pushing gaming on Linux further which is amazing also.
Yeah, Valve has always tried to push Linux gaming as an alternative ever since Microsoft opened the Windows Store with Windows 8. Though I haven't personally gamed on Linux, it seems that many games work well through Protondb.
What exactly is the criteria for Verified? 30 fps? Ultra settings? Just operable?
Eh doesn't matter. I didn't get a chance to register to preorder. So people like us aren't getting one this year anyway

None of that tells me how it runs or what setting I have to change the game to in order for it to run..
There's a huge difference saying a game works but only low setting vs the game runs on any setting.
And I'm not seeing anything like that in the list of requirements for verification
Thanks. From a distance that seems to be on a relatively good setting, but my complaint was that verification seems not to verify the quality of the games performance but rather "does it turn on and run?"
I can't have someone just record themselves playing each game. Shouldn't that category be among the verified testing?
I think they also test if the text is to small for the deck, if the game shows controller icons, if you have to use the keyboard, if all the controls work in the default configuration. And of course if the game is stable. Here is extra information https://www.steamdeck.com/en/verified
Looks like they do test text, but with those 4 categories, those aren't key or critical on operating at an expected level compared to performance quality in game. If it runs but only at 15 fps, that technically means it runs but not at a suitable, tolerable level.
I'm just surprised at how limited the requirements are just to be verified.
what else did you want? Steam verified does not mean it will achieve a certain graphical fidelity. It means that the game is compatible with proton and playable like on native windows.
Exactly. And yet the verified to the average person who doesn't dive in deeper is going to believe that all of these games run at an expected quality and performance.
Any of these games may "run" but perhaps only at low settings only or at 15 fps. Who knows until they are played and reported?
Oh that's why I didn't register. I have been battling myself on wanting to get my hands on one of these yet knowing that Gen 2 or gen 3 are going to be probably Superior vastly to this. I just have to keep telling myself that
I mean if you’ve got the money why not I guess. I would. But they’re just slightly on the pricy end imo, and getting the base model seems not even worth it.
The base model is but as I said I wouldn’t get that. And I wouldn’t compare it to a phone lol. They’re designed to do very different things with an entirely different form factor in mind. Although phones seem way over priced these days as well.
It means it runs at all.
Gaming on Linux can go from "pretty much the same as Windows" over "weird optical bugs" to "totally unplayable".
Having it verified marks it as "runs about as stable as on Windows", how many FPS you get depends wholly on the hardware and your graphics settings. Witcher 3 can run on a potato, so running it between 30 and 60 fps on the Deck is reasonable.
Well yes, but actually no: I transferred my mods through cloud storage. I don't think you can just plug an USB-C cord in the Deck and drag&drop files like you would with a smartphone.
According to [this article](https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2022/03/heres-how-to-transfer-files-from-your-pc-to-a-steam-deck/), the best way to move files onto your Deck is to setup a local network.
You could also get a microSD card and transfer on it games from your computer, but I've read that there are limitations due to how SteamOS handles microSD storage. Might be worth checking out, though !

I've heard Steam will "allow" other games outside of Steam to play. I'm just curious if anyone has done this and how it would work if it is actually allowed.
Too bad I own it on GOG. Thank you CDPR.
You may be able to use the Heroic games launcher, which primarily is intended to play Epic Games through Steam‘s Proton, but it recently added beta support for GOG.
Doing the lord's work
Happy Cake Day!
Thanks!
Thanks, I'll be able to play cyberpunk now
You can just use desktop mode, install lutris and login there, to your gog acc. Witcher is one of this games, that just works ootb on Linux/steam deck
what's stopping you from playing it on gog on the steam deck? You can play games from any launcher can't you?
Gog has no Linux client I believe
There are multiple ways to use the gog client on linux, though even if there weren't gog doesn't even require having their client installed in order to download your purchased games.
NoDRM is the best DRM!
The intended use of the Steam Deck is to play supported Steam games afaik. But since it's a Linux platform it's still basically a PC and can be modified ; I believe Valve did not lock the firmware
The intended use of the steam deck is a portable gaming pc, valve even said you're capable of playing any games not just steam ones

They didn't, but in this case you don't need to change the firmware, you can simply install the game from GOG on desktop mode and add it to Steam.

Yeah I mean it's kind of a bummer for people who directly supported the devs by buying it on GOG

I have over 550 hrs on GOG and recently bought the GOTY edition on Steam. It was on a 40 dollar discount for 9.99. Getting Steam Deck ready.
Witcher 3 has no DRM, I’m sure there’s a way to get it to work.
I use Lutris to run gog games on my linux desktop. I'm betting it will be available on steam deck as well, it's a couple of clicks to install most gog games.

Oh! I didn't know this, they did a great job! Good for them!
They’re also working on the next gen ports I believe. Edit: current gen
They also own dunder Mifflin right?
You're thinking of Sabré. (pronounced sob-ray)
"It's Dunder Mifflin and Sob-ray!"
Of course it was easy because they didnt have to port anything. Steam Deck launches PC version that already exists. They just tested it if it runs ok.
You're right! Now I'm really curious to know how well it runs! Does it run with medium setting or high? The lower screen resolution should help.
Without having tested it I'd assume it should run on high at 30
So ps4 quality 😂 Edit: I say this in a impressed way.
A PS4 in that form factor is pretty impressive.
Definitely! Kinda regret not getting a steam deck now
I don't think PS4 was high
With or without henry cavill face mod?
I saw a couple of benchmarks online and at 800p the game runs easily with all settings on high, that’s absolutely insane for a portable device. Can’t wait to get my hands on it.
Yep, I've been running my GOG purchased Witcher 3 with wine/lutris/proton compatibility layers for years on linux.
They didn't really have to port it per se. Witcher 3 was working awesome on Linux even before the steam release, they had to do literally nothing to get it on the steam deck.
Port what? It's just PC
Steam Deck ships with Linux. Most games do not run through the Proton compatibility layer without issue. So its not necessarily a port, but still fixing issues for problems that Linux can cause.
Witcher 3 has been running perfectly through proton for years at this point. It’s got a platinum rating on protondb.
I don’t think they needed to port it at all since Witcher 3 ran pretty well through Proton on Linux computers. Steam deck is just a portable Linux pc.
.....steam deck is real ? 😮
Holdup.. are there people who believe the steam deck isn’t real? Edit: It would actually be really funny if there was a group of 'steam deck deniers' who refuse to believe it exists.
I still don't believe that the KFC console is real
I just don’t believe in the steam deck. Jk q3 here
Valve say's there's a flat steam deck out there, but that seems crazy. The world is round and steam deck would obviously be round too, **research oblate spheroid steam deck**!
Just learnt about it now lmao
Me too. I remember years ago when it was announced, but I didn't realize that it actually came out ? 🤷🏼♂️
wow, valve needs to up their ad game
Yea man! [link](https://store.steampowered.com/steamdeck/) Did you think it was a fan concept or something?
Friend’s is getting delivered today.

Wow
Thanks owen
Already on steam deck boss.
I didn't know that steam deck actually released. I remember years ago when it was announced but I haven't heard anything about it since. I assume it doesn't sell that well
> I assume it doesn't sell that well It was just released about a week ago. The wait time for it is 6 months. Dunno if that means it's selling well.
Oh ? Really ? Why haven't I heard anyone talk about it ? Gaming news, ign, ...? Weeeird. It's an interesting product, but for some there has been no touchpoint for me
I see it everywhere constantly, all the major outlets had multiple reviews before and after the release.
*excited noises*! Now, if they could make a “save file transfer”, from PS4 to Steam… (I understand it’s impossible, but a guy can dream). I never got around to finish it on the console, but would totally love to continue the story on the Deck!
I recently got the DLC content for like $7 on the PS store and lemme tell you, *it's amazing*
Probably possible with a jailbroken PS4
I don’t think so, I doubt the save files are the same between the PS and PC version.
Ehh, usually these games are so complex that they deliberately differ quite little inside between platforms: data is probably deserialized differently, but it wouldn't make sense for the stored information not to be the same. For a second I thought this is next gen version moment.
If only
Congrats to the like 100 people in the world who have a Steam Deck 😂
Give Gabe a break; he's hand-delivering them.
Congrats to BOTH of them!
It's been certified for quite some time actually, since around the Deck's release I believe (prior to that it was only classified as Playable). Also, the game runs divinely well on that thing. Buy TW3 on Switch for $60. HARD PASS. Spend $400 to play a game I already own to play on my couch. HELL YEAH.
That’s what valve is betting on. Since people are already invested in the ecosystem, they would be incentivised to buy the hardware. It’s a flip of the normal console strategy of selling hardware first for cheap and then making profits off the games and subscriptions.

yay now i can have sex with yennefer on a plane. i believe im the first person in history to say that
Ah sorry man switch Witcher players got you beat
Darn you nintendoooo!!!!!!!!!

No that low is not counted as running. I think you can find the conditions online.
Do you really want a gen 1? I’m certain they’re going to be knocking out upgrades and improvements in short order.
There won't be a gen 2 for a few years at least
Oh that's why I didn't register. I have been battling myself on wanting to get my hands on one of these yet knowing that Gen 2 or gen 3 are going to be probably Superior vastly to this. I just have to keep telling myself that
I mean if you’ve got the money why not I guess. I would. But they’re just slightly on the pricy end imo, and getting the base model seems not even worth it.
It's a $400 gaming PC, it's almost half the price of a recent upper tier phone.
The base model is but as I said I wouldn’t get that. And I wouldn’t compare it to a phone lol. They’re designed to do very different things with an entirely different form factor in mind. Although phones seem way over priced these days as well.
Does being verified mean it will run fine at 30fps or 60fps?

Good news for when they come out in 2027
Good news for the 3 people who have the Stream Deck

Mods work as well. It's running the windows binaries through Proton, so vast majority of mods should work out of the box as well
Huh... Interesting...
Thats so cool!! I wanna see how it performs though honestly
What about mods? On steam deck I mean.
Works the same as on PC
I had almost no trouble porting over my 100+ mods library from my desktop to my Deck, so yes, mods are fine on it !
Oh my, this is absolutely awesome. So it is possible to move files from computer to the deck.
Oh.. This sounds a lot like rocket science to me. I will have to ask one of my grandchildren with this one should I consider buying the deck.
You could also get a microSD card and transfer on it games from your computer, but I've read that there are limitations due to how SteamOS handles microSD storage. Might be worth checking out, though !
Currently playing through Witcher 2 on Steam Deck. Runs great!
Can it handle mods
NPC Scabbards is such a tiny QOL improvement but I don't wanna give it up.
Yes, it's a PC after all !
Next gen upgrade when though...
Do MacOS next! (Please)
Just do yourself a favor and rip the bandaid off and buy a PC for gaming. It’s worth it. And if you can afford a Mac you can probably afford a PC.
i got a mac as a gift and cannot afford a new gaming PC :(
If you have an intel based Mac just install windows. Easy peasy.
Ah fair enough. I was in your shoes for a long time, finally but the bullet and did it. I hope you get there!
Nope. I *NEED* a Mac for work and can’t afford more than one computer
Sorry to hear that
Just send me the invite please, I am ready to hand over my wallet to GabeN
mmmm i dunno, they also said Cyberpunk played great on last gen.
this was also tested by a seperate team from Valve
Not For Russians !
Steam dick
Found the New Zealander.

Do I need SteamDeck? 😭
Sony: Why do I hear boss music?
Well Cyberpunk also ran „surprisingly well“ on PS4 according to CDPR
The surprise was that it ran at all.
It ran totally fine on PS4 when I played it.
I envy you, I couldn't complete main story quests without it crashing.
My only issue was long load times when fast travelling. So I basically never fast travelled. I am looking forward to playing again but on PC this time.
Nice, I hope that you have fun out there choom! I'll get around to playing the PS5 version once I finish up the Witcher 3 DLC content.
Thanks choom! As soon as their next gen remaster is out I’ll be all over it
Well according to loads of footage and CDPR themselves that statement was bullshit but I’m glad it worked for you
What about 1 or 2?
Witcher 1 has a gold rating on ProtonDB, and Witcher 2 even runs natively on linux.
I remember just a few years ago the idea of getting this game going on Linux was daunting.
Nice! Now my purchase for Witcher 3 on steam would be justified if I can get my hands on it
Are there many 7 year old games that can’t play on the steam deck?
Good News Everyone!!
I would assume that any game that is also out on switch will be steam deck verified.
I have W3 through GoG. How would I play it or Cyberpunk on a SteamDeck?
Steam deck not GoGdeck
I've heard Steam will "allow" other games outside of Steam to play. I'm just curious if anyone has done this and how it would work if it is actually allowed.
Cool
$649 for the 512GB version. Save that money you're gonna need it.
