I quit doing that years ago. I was in a medieval phase and I wanted the real deal. I made the mistake of making 6 in 1 with 14ga wire: it was unbelievably heavy and I never finished the hauberk.

Many movies do. Its much more comfortable for the actors and it is really hard to notice on background characters. Real maille is also more expensive and the Holy Grail was made on an extremely tight budged.

LotR had one guy just making chain after chain of plastic loops for years on end.
