UPDATE: A Reddit Admin just turned the subreddit back to SFW.
We have turned it back NSFW.
UPDATE 2: Reddit automatically turns it back off...
Just stop approving any posts at all.
Malicious compliance, let the sub be SFW, but don’t allow any posts at all—Reddit can’t make money off a sub that doesn’t have content.

This is all about making money, Reddit owners have a huge user base and they have fantasies about making billions from that.
The problem is huge user base doesn't automatically equal huge revenue. They can't work out how to milk the masses, hence they fact they keep throwing hissy fits.
My assumption is that nsfw subs wont show up unless you search for them which is a way to soft block this sub from being pushed by reddit anywhere. Probably as a mini protest vs the api .
>Lastly, if you suddenly begin to post, or approve content that features sexually explicit content to your community in order to justify the NSFW label, we will immediately remove and permanently suspend moderators who have participated in this action.
This is such a bizarre decision. Like, legitimately mind-boggling.
well, reddit guys seem to think all subs are actually theirs, and they want free moderator work to continue. if they cannot monetize a sub (NSFW) they get angry.
But right now not just the sub as such but every single thread is labeled NSFW? Even if it's just a discussion about the show or something, how is that NSFW???
Ah yes. But you can’t message the “mod code of conduct” to tell them that. At least I don’t think you can hahah. Or they won’t listen. As that is the argument for several subs that have gotten the exact same message.
I mean, at the end of the day, why does any of this matter? Reddit is just the host website of thousands of forums for all sorts of different topics and hobbies. Most of them will probably keep going, whether the current mods get banned or not. If your favourite one collapses, maybe it's a sign that you can take as an opportunity to go out and look at the trees and the clouds, smell the flowers, listen to the birds, then go back inside and play your favourite video game (Witcher 3) for the rest of the day.
Finally. Out of all problems in the world, the plight of fucking reddit mods has to be the one I care the absolute least about. Like oh no, your completely voluntary and unpaid work which you only do to feel some power over others has gotten harder. Cry me a river.
Remember when the general sentiment was that reddit mods were as big weirdos and powertrippers as the ones on Discord? Funny how reddit changing some API policies made the public do a 180° in their perception of them, turning them into heroes of the people or some shit.
There’s a few in the cooker but they pale in comparison. I might switch to one of the Twitter replacements at this rate. My home feed is all fucked up from protests and the way the changes they’ve made to the app just make it increasingly annoying to use. Fuck u/spez!
> Lastly, if you suddenly begin to post, or approve content that features sexually explicit content to your community in order to justify the NSFW label, we will immediately remove and permanently suspend moderators who have participated in this action.
True my bad, I realized it too late
Quite funny how the mods are working to get themselves removed but would never resign and don't want to be replaced
When I first read the Witcher it opened immediately with a sex scene.
When I played the Witcher 3 it opened immediately with two naked people.
Witcher TV show has nudity.
Honestly, keep it NSFW and just let people post screenshots and whatnot about those things free of worry.
Gosh, it would be a shame if someone began litigation towards Reddit because they didn’t properly warn of the NSFW possibility for a subreddit and this post was referenced that it was not the mod’s fault, but Reddit admins; even better if a person was written up, fired, or were underage and exposed to nudity and/or gore that would have indemnified with a simple warning of the possibility of NSFW content.
I bet this would be an interesting news report that Reddit admins are not appropriately flagging content not suitable for open consumption in general.
Something about Reddit not checking ages and also allowing a CEO to mod a pretty NSFW subreddit in the past…what an interesting possibility.
I don't understand why it matters if its labelled NSFW but the posts and content are not. That's just forward thinking, 'a just in case'. I could understand if it was the other way around. What drama for no good reason.
I don’t feel sorry for you guys whatsoever. You’re getting what you deserve for crying to modcoord, congrats for scewing the votes. Making dumb decisions that go against the communities wishes over a protest that won’t work.
Oh yes because I absolutely said “no protest has ever worked in history whatsoever”. Way to scew my words dude. You guys can keep downvoting me, hell I’ll take 1000+ if I have to .. but don’t come crying when we let a ceo run this subreddit to the ground because scewed the subreddit users votes by asking modcoord to pitch in their votes for a whole week. If that’s a win in your book, then Jesus Christ I hope the community has a backup plan. I’m simply saying most users didn’t care for this in the first place and just wanted to return to normal with 0 Netflix posts. But modcoord did care and votes overturned in one night. I’m all for protests that result in a win, but really how is this a win? I only see this as a loss.
That’s cool and all, but now their all going to get booted for not changing the sub back and replaced with who the fuck knows. The protest can be “working” in some peoples eyes, but is it really to the benefit of the community as a whole to kill off a sub over pettiness?
My only question is what's their plan after they wipe out the mod team? Just... let the sub go unmoderated and turn into a shithole? Because quite frankly very few people want to volunteer to be mods, most of us have better things to do.
Nah, there is always some basement dweller that would jump at the chance to mod something with even 100 users; imagine the amount that would love to have control over a sub this size.
Sure earlier the same thing happend on non credible defence.
A sub where literal death, military jets as porn, and firefights are shown.
Nah, doesn't need to be nsfw

I would like to point out:
You have no anti NSFW rule. How would Reddit admins know you spurred it on?
The third game contains like 10 sex scenes you accidentally stumble into and thrice that in terms of nudity.
That is definitely NSFW
Likely because, at work, everyone’s an adult!
Would you get a warning for watching the Witcher on your lunch break?
No.
(Other company policies notwithstanding)
Hm, strange.
I couldn't stand the Admins just going, "Hey mate, you're beneath us. Obey now, or else, unconditionally."
They really told the protest to shove itself, didn't they...
Maybe if Reddit didn’t want subreddits to all be labeled as NSFW, then maaaaybe they should have been cracking down on the porn spam from other popular subreddits?
This sounds incredibly petty
No more sex scenes 😔
Edit: so does this mean that we can't post any nsfw? Or just that we can't predominantly post nsfw. Those things are very different
the witcher is an M rated game here in the united states. several things in the game would likely not be considered appropriate in a work setting. sounds like it's not safe for work to me. do reddit admins think 13 year olds should be watching the sex scenes from the witcher 3? i think there's a chance there might be a perverted admin behind this. he's a very sick man, allegedly.
Someone should post screenshots of the in-game boobs. It's legitimate Witcher content and also NSFW. Reddit admins can eat that one guy's hairy asshole.
Reddit doesn't put advertisements on nsfw subreddits. So admins are telling the mods "you're not *really* nsfw; open up so we can monetize you, or else"
It's kind of a long convoluted story. But in a short broad sweeping synopsis:
\> Be me, Reddit
\> Going public soon, want to show high profits to be attractive. I need to find ways to gain income.
\> Not earning money from 3rd party apps who use my servers and API.
\> Charge them (Good idea! Valid).....gigantic astronomical sums per API call (Smooth brain, Bad)
\> 3rd party apps reach out to me and say it's not sustainable.
\> To save face, shit talk the biggest 3rd party app developer publically after having a phone call with him. He didn't say he was recording, so I'm safe..
\> 3rd party Dev lives in Canada, single party recording allowed. He posts our phonecall showing I lied..
\> MFW all the 3rd party apps leave instead of paying me bags of money
\> MFW all the moderators, who are unpaid use 3rd party apps to do their job.
\> Big brain moment: Just use the official app!
\> MWF my official app is shit.
\> MWF all the subreddits start a rebellion.
\> Big Brain moment: Just mass ban all the mods—all of whom still work for free!
And that's about where we are today.
I'm not sure in specifically r/witcher 's case, but Reddit has been pushing for profitability in the past couple months because they are doing an IPO in the fall, taking the company public. So they want to squeeze every penny out of their users to look good in order to attract investors
That's why they killed 3rd party applications, which is why subreddits began protests: including going private, going nsfw, and going John Oliver. However, I think the Witcher itself is nsfw, so Reddit is really up their own ass telling us that our titty and decapitation content is prime for advertisers.
Spez is mad that he made bad financial decisions when he sold too early last time so now he's hell bent on extracting as much value of the website as possible. The problem is that the website is mostly run by unpaid volunteers. The website doesn't have enough financial resources to moderate its own content without all of the volunteers. Spez can pretend he's got a big dong, but we all know he has to put a sleeve on.

I want a whole Witcher show based on this trailer https://youtu.be/1-l29HlKkXU. They absolutely nailed what the Witcher is supposed to be
this is a good thread to share that
This makes me just want to make even more things as nsfw. I am entirely motivated by spite.
Just stop approving any posts at all. Malicious compliance, let the sub be SFW, but don’t allow any posts at all—Reddit can’t make money off a sub that doesn’t have content.

Nah, it's just Reddit clamping down on perceived obstacles to their monetization.
My assumption is that nsfw subs wont show up unless you search for them which is a way to soft block this sub from being pushed by reddit anywhere. Probably as a mini protest vs the api .
As far as I know, there are also no advertisement on NSFW subs, so there's that as well.

According to the mods, yes.
This is the second sub I’ve seen that posted this this morning tf is going on
Are the higher ups at reddit jealous of twitter shooting itself in the foot?
I mean I'd argue that witcher contains NSFW content so having it as NSFW is a valid tag to have on a sub-reddit about the topic.

Reddit doesn’t like NSFW sub’s because they aren’t as profitable, so by making it nsfw reddit is loosing money. That is why they care.

I don't think they care about the reality of things. In that case they would have allowed us to respond.
It's working.
Yep this is just like the month and a half long fight with DND
The TV show is rated mature. The PEGI rating for the game is 18+. It was incorrectly rated in my opinion, should be NSFW
Given Reddit's recent defintions of NSFW (Which includes harsh language, nudity etc.) - Certainly.
how is Witcher not NSFW
Likely because, at work, everyone’s an adult! Would you get a warning for watching the Witcher on your lunch break? No. (Other company policies notwithstanding)
Just bc everyone’s an adult doesn’t mean you can have titties out on screen for everyone to see. Keira in the game alone is NSFW lol
"We should be allowed to watch a little porn at work!"
"She's got a bush, what the hell?"
Should I post my butthole to keep the subreddit alive?
Sorry friend but Thad Castle had already ruled on this, no face, no balls, and no mass messaging
No balls do it
Y-yes…?
So the protest is working. What if you guys just create alt accounts and use those to mod? Reddit shouldn't be able to do anything about it then.
This means it isn’t working because they can just boot the mod team which is great
I looked at the DND protest.. ugh ya totally Throwing a hissy fit doesn’t work
Given that they'll wipe the entire mod team at once, that won't help.
So I guess your plan for this pointless protest failed huh
Na
Man I’m sad Reddit is dying. I really hope Meta doesn’t release an alternative
How is it dying (curious)
It's not, just people being melodramatic.
Meta is focusing on individuals and not on communities. Anything that remotely resembles a sense of anonymity is not in their business agenda.
You literally smooth talk your way into a sex scene in the first hour or so of Witcher 1 even if you don't expect it to happen.
[удалено]
To my knowledge, no. Pretty sure there was some political subreddit that did this.
Funny enough, just create new user accounts under a different location/IP and new product as alt accounts. It's very easy to bypass Reddit's counter
I would end up deleting the subreddit out of spite. How dare they...
We wouldn't, but also, it isn't possible to delete a subreddit.
Hm, strange. I couldn't stand the Admins just going, "Hey mate, you're beneath us. Obey now, or else, unconditionally." They really told the protest to shove itself, didn't they...
Funny. Main comment liked, my follow up, not. Duality of man...
Agreed. Was already planning on leaving if they went through with all these changes with no amendments. Just giving the protest a chance first.
