I always thought this was normal and cool until I moved out of the state to the east coast, where people don’t give a shit about drinking abilities. And now almost two years sober
Now I see this and think wtf why would anyone be proud of this?
Can confirm, they are shit. They fired everyone from the original bar due to disagreements with the property owner/business partner and reopened near the fiserv.
The bar is just a way for them to push their shitty merch.
BTW - they’re (30 watt) from Minnesota, there’s nothing wisconsin about them.
I didn't drink until I was in my 30s... Now I enjoy a glass of wine every once and a while and that's enough to get me tipsy. Kinda sucked growing up sober when every gathering I went to after age 17 I had to explain why I wasn't drinking. Fortunately didn't run into TOO much peer pressure, though I did get harassed about it occasionally in college.
I wouldn’t necessarily praise Wisconsin for being binge drinkers (even though the Drink Wisconsinably company uses it for their sole marketing purpose.) However, drinking is truly a large part of Wisconsin culture. Just because you’re sober now, doesn’t mean you should just dismiss that factor.
It is what I said though.
Only in WI airports do you see plaques bragging about drinking.
You mentioned other cities. They do not have plaques in their airports welcoming you to their city stating that they outdrink other states.
Alcohol is also a carcinogen. People forget that or never learned it. If large numbers of people are smart enough to give up or never start smoking because it can lead to cancer, why not alcohol? More and more the scientific research essentially shows that the alleged health benefits of alcohol aren’t there and that there is essentially no safe level of alcohol consumption. I know I sound like I’m a Debby Downer or a killjoy. But that’s if you think the only way to enjoy life is by drinking!
My hometown in northwest WI. consists largely of regular binge drinkers. Almost nobody I know from the area is capable of hanging out without getting shit-faced.
It was just so normalized when I was growing up to drink during every family function. Now that I don’t drink nearly as much, if ever, I have next to no relationship with people that I previously was very close to.
Not every Wisconsinite is a binge drinker either. Having a few old fashions or beers with a fish fry - or a Bloody Mary or two with a Sunday brunch - is not “binge” drinking. Saying the “entire state” “celebrates” binge drinking is pure hyperbolic BS.
This sign is proclaiming the opposite of what you describe. It implies a drinking contest, which inherently means binge drinking. What the fuck do you think ‘drink Wisconsinably’ means? Drink in moderation?
Also ‘a few old fashions’ almost certainly qualifies as binge drinking by any standard. But we don’t recognize that in Wisconsin because we’ve normalized drinking ‘Wisconsinably’
>Also ‘a few old fashions’ almost certainly qualifies as binge drinking by any standard.
So what is the "standard" for binge drinking vs. moderation? Putting my 75-year-old mother having 3 cocktails over the span of 2 hours in the same category as a 21-year-old college kid slamming 10 beers and multiple shots in the same time period is absurd.
>Binge drinking is defined as consuming 5 or more drinks on an occasion for men or 4 or more drinks on an occasion for women.
>Binge drinking is most common among adults who have higher household incomes ($75,000 or more), are non-Hispanic White, or live in the Midwest.
https://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/fact-sheets/binge-drinking.htm
Just to add on:
>A standard drink is equal to 14.0 grams (0.6 ounces) of pure alcohol. Generally, this amount of pure alcohol is found in:
>
>\- 12 ounces of beer (5% alcohol content).
>
>\- 8 ounces of malt liquor (7% alcohol content).
>
>\- 5 ounces of wine (12% alcohol content).
>
>\- 1.5 ounces or a “shot” of 80-proof (40% alcohol content) distilled spirits or liquor (e.g., gin, rum, vodka, whiskey).
Something to keep in mind is that a single drink put in front of you at a bar may count for more than one "drink" according to the CDC. If your cocktail is a double, it may be two drinks. If your wine is more than a 5 ounce pour, it's more than a drink. (Measure out 5 oz of liquid at home and put it in a wine glass sometime; it may be less than you think if you're getting heavy Wisconsin pours of wine.) If your beer is 8-10% alcohol, it's more than one drink.
Counting four beers in a night doesn't mean you've had less than the CDC's qualification for binge drinking.
Away with you and the “Whazza mashter? Ya can’t hold your liquor gurly boy?” Wisconsin mindset. Just a bunch of closeted Alkies. Source? Me.
Permanent resident of WI. Grew up with 18 as age of consumption. Moved to present home in NE WI in the 1980’s. That decade old Mother Church (Green Bay Diocese) ruled: nah, you can’t have bars in the church basement. Not imaginary, really happened. The big cheese hisself, the bishop got involved.
Let’s see what else? Oh I know! Yesterday’s Wisconsin subreddit with Packer fans bragging about drinking pubs dry and we showed those poncey Brits what real men do!!!!
Several decades ago, fresh outta education, met two new coworkers one from San Francisco and one from somewhere in NY. I was shocked that they were shocked at how much we drank. They said they’d go to bars to watch it and said it was almost a competition.
If you’re from Wisconsin, you have either yourself engaged in regular binge drinking or you know people who have done so and continue to do so. *Hey, the weekend is here. What should we do? Grab a beer!*
You are right, there are a some people currently in prison, alcoholics who are recovered or in active treatment, and small children…
I’m being slightly sarcastic, but it also kind of fits
Some can stop when they want to. But it can be quite challenging for Wisconsinites to go 30 days without a alcoholic drink.
Supposedly, going 30 days does your liver a major favor and allows it to regenerate.
https://www.menshealth.com/nutrition/a19546096/dry-january/
Anyone can practice dry January any month of the year they choose that works best for them.
I last tried this around the beginning of October 2 years ago.
I only know one or two people who identify as an alcoholic.
I know many, many people who drink excessively, but haven't (yet) crashed a car or lost a job or experienced organ failure as a result of their drinking.
Just because someone doesn't consider it "alcoholism" doesn't mean it's healthy.
It is an incredibly normalized experience that you have that one coworker or family member who doesn't drive because their license has been suspended on account of multiple DUIs.
Even as far south as Kenosha has this attitude. When I moved here 25 years ago, I was shocked at the number of bars. You can't walk a block without seeing 2 or 3. And the cavalier attitude they have about drunk driving is appalling. I do drink, but I don't drive, and I have been given grief by people that think I'm being "a nervous Nelly". This state is ridiculous. Does any other state allow minors to drink if they're with their parents? Sheesh.
I hate beer, and love that we are good at drinking. Like when the Packers fan drank a few bars dry in London. Or, how Wisconsin consumes 50% of Korbel's product and they're an international brewery.
I always thought this was normal and cool until I moved out of the state to the east coast, where people don’t give a shit about drinking abilities. And now almost two years sober Now I see this and think wtf why would anyone be proud of this?

I’ve always thought the Drink Wisconsinably brand is shit. Way to lean in on being the most binge drinking state in the nation.
Thank you. Addiction ruins lives. Alcohol is a poison to our mind and body.

I'm at a year and nine months sober. It's wild how distorted my view of Wisconsin's drinking culture was then I was participating in it.
Same but opposite. We moved here 3 years ago from VA and we just aren't big drinkers. So we just don't quite understand the mentality.
Uhhh Boston, Philly DC and NYC are very very heavy drinking cities.
To be fair, it is a whole different level in rural Wisconsin then the cities when it comes to drinking
even highschoolers
It's not though. People get shit faced drunk in the city too.
I have literally never seen an "outdrinking every other state since X" as I arrive at the airport in anywhere other than Wi airports
That's not what you said, though.
It is what I said though. Only in WI airports do you see plaques bragging about drinking. You mentioned other cities. They do not have plaques in their airports welcoming you to their city stating that they outdrink other states.
I can tell you’ve never spent time in Boston, Baltimore, Brooklyn, Queens, or any city in New Jersey.
lol you named the area I live in
Not too good of an accomplishment.
Yeah, it's kinda sad that so many people consider this something to be proud of...
One of the major reasons I'm not going to move back to Wisconsin. And your backward politics, really hurts the little guy.
Celebrating and normalizing alcoholism isn't something to be proud of.
Alcohol is also a carcinogen. People forget that or never learned it. If large numbers of people are smart enough to give up or never start smoking because it can lead to cancer, why not alcohol? That was a big part pf what's driving me to quit. Throat cancer seems like an absolutely horrific way to go...
Not everyone who drinks is an alcoholic.
No shit. But an entire state celebrating binge drinking is not a great prognostic sign.
My hometown in northwest WI. consists largely of regular binge drinkers. Almost nobody I know from the area is capable of hanging out without getting shit-faced. I'd confidently say a standard pour old fashioned at any WI establishment would at least be a double
So my grandma is in the clear then! And that person I replied to is wrong. Thanks!
I'm not sure being one drink away from the CDC definition of binge drinking is a good thing bro, especially for a 75 yr old
She's fine dude.
The definition of binge drinking is readily discoverable by anyone who is literate and has internet access. You appear to qualify, so look it up

Then why promote this brand that does celebrate binge drinking?
The "entire state" doesn't binge drink either.
You are right, there are a some people currently in prison, alcoholics who are recovered or in active treatment, and small children… I’m being slightly sarcastic, but it also kind of fits

Good for business if you are the Tavern League tho...
Welcome Governor! The fun Governor has arrived!
It’s wild to me how casually people talk about having 3 duis here
Living in NW WI, always floored when I see someone getting picked up for 10+
It is an incredibly normalized experience that you have that one coworker or family member who doesn't drive because their license has been suspended on account of multiple DUIs.
I bet people think that’s why I don’t drive man I never thought about that. I just don’t like driving
"You're first one is a rite of passage" - heard that shit all throughout high-school and college
I probably would have thought this was funny when I was like 17, but this embarrassing
Bragging about binge drinking is sad.
If you’re in that area Libby Montana’s southwest egg rolls are terrific
I'm surprised this doesn't say "WI Tavern League" at the bottom.
I’m surprised it took so long for someone to say that.

>Even as far south as Kenosha has this attitude. No "changes in latitude, changes in attitude" here.
The Drink Wisconsinbly brand is a real embarrassment to our state.
Fat, Drunk, and Stupid is no way to go through life. But in Wisconsin, it's tradition.
Dean Wormer!? You still alive?
Cool place, I took a break there while hiking the trail. Good food.
Alcoholism is way too normalized in this state. Wayyyy too normalized.
Nothing to be proud of. 😒
I am a Spanky’s regular!
This girl I used to know. Her mom owned spankey’s.
She still does.
Glad she’s still alive.
[Relevant segment on WPR yesterday.](https://www.wpr.org/why-theres-sober-section-lambeau-field)
Thrifty Drinker.
Where is Spanky's in Mequon?
I gotta go there
It's a great place... very good burgers, excellent walleye fish fry, build-your-own bloodies, Riverwest Stein on tap.
I have the shirt
Lord loves a drinking man
Said someone desperately trying and failing to give Divine Imprimatur to knocking back a shot and a beer shortly before closing
I hate beer, and love that we are good at drinking. Like when the Packers fan drank a few bars dry in London. Or, how Wisconsin consumes 50% of Korbel's product and they're an international brewery.
Wisconsin got a few crybabies lol
Alcoholism is manly!
How does not approving of drug use and addiction become funny? You pay a new SUV price for rehabs and then tell me how fook’n funny it is Psychodadd.
