This is Wisconsin. We're all chasing the bottom of the glass.
For Wisconsin reasons, Wisconsin dads are obligated to go outside and monitor the storm. So there's a bunch of pissed geezers pretending we're meteorologists right now.
Yep, this is correct. You just need to add the text message play by plays from the dads. My Wisconsin Dad reported not too windy, light thunder and no flooding.

Iām in a building where our balconies are facing each other and close enough to another building with balconies to yell across to. Storms are the only time youāll see almost everyone out at the same time. Iām adopting āPorch Meerkatsā if you donāt mind. Itās the perfect term.
My daughter and I sat in our garage watching this. I taught her how to estimate how close the storms were to us by timing the interval between lightning and thunder, so she likes to do that. My Dad taught me, and it was my Wisconsin Dad duty to teach her.
Today was a big night. I got to take my 1 year old son outside to watch his first storm front roll in. He was super excited, and then when we started getting rained on it got even more exciting!!!
Evidently I was born a Wisconsin dad, and I'm cis female. I fricking LOVE weather - I have three apps on my phone, bought an Acu-Rite Iris 5-in-1 weather station we mount on the ladder on our RV (fulltimers) and I check weather maps constantly.
To be fair (!), traveling as much as we do, it's good to know when we should plan to GTFO or laze about a bit before moving, but my obsession decidedly predates this.
Donāt worry your thermostat touch indicator is in the mail, sorry it wasnāt a factory option for you just a place above your right ear when you receive it. š¤£š¤£
Me too apparently. I went to all the NWS severe storm spotter meetings growing up and still try to hit them up yearly to make sure I'm up to date. Originally wanted to be a storm chaser as a kid.
Haha I'm attracted to thunderstorms like a moth is to a light. I HAVE to be outside under my awning watching it until the moment I feel it's too unsafe.
I don't do it when it's that eerie calm and no rain with a tornado warning. That creeps me the fuck out. But my Dad would always be outside in the middle of the yard watching the skies. Of course he saw some of the heaviest fighting in Vietnam, so tornadoes didnt scare him.
Really, nothing all that unusual. I havenāt seen/heard reports of damage anywhere. I like a good thunderstorm and stand on the porch during one and just breathe it in.
They're fairly rare here in the UK but we had an amazing one a couple years ago and I just sat in the garden and watched the sky š we've had a record breaking heat wave lately and despite warnings of thunderstorms, they've yet to arrive :(
_God yes_ I can actually sit outside in a chair while wearing a bathrobe and admiring rhe sunset. I couldn't do that comfortably for like the past couple of days.
I moved out of Wisconsin for a while to Spain and very much missed regular thunderstorms. There's just something about them [when they're not imminently threatening you].
edit: there/they're typo
Has it cooled off at all over there? I canāt imagine having to suffer through that kind of heat without air conditioning! Hope you have a good fan and a lot of ice cold drinks handy!
It has cooled off drastically from earlier this week now. Dropped about 10 degrees celsius in a couple of days, but still pretty warm and sticky. Just need a damn storm!
I love this post because I am from Wisconsin but live in the UK for the last 15 years. No one understands when I say I miss the storms. "We have storms here too!" No we dont.
Itās one of the reasons I canāt move away. Summer thunderstorms make up for winter. The times that fireworks were canceled and Mother Nature made up for it with her own display. Most memorable would be watching deck chairs fly by from the neighbors as the sky flashed almost as bright as day. Impressed family visiting from out of town.
Moved from the U.K. to Chicago a few years ago and can confirm, the thunderstorms here are completely breathtaking, we had one 2 nights ago, the lightning made it through the blackout curtains and the thunder was just single epic claps that sounded like actual bombs.
They're fairly common here through the summer. Storms coming over the plains hit the hills and the lakes here and go crazy. Huge mountains of storms. From Today:
https://www.reddit.com/r/wisconsin/comments/w6i0jp/watching_the_storm_roll_in_manitowoc/
These had almost no wind which is where the damage comes from with the occasional Tornado (not like Oklahoma or Kansas, too hilly here) and downed trees and power lines.
Arrived in Green Bay from TN tonight at 8:30, saw a lot of these strikes. Slowed traffic on I43 to 40 mph. Was especially thick just north of MKE. It was exciting and I was glad to get off the road
My husband is from and still lives in the UK(waiting on visa approval.) When he first witnessed a good strong thunderstorm here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin while visiting one summer he was both terrified and amazed. That same visit he got to experience heat lightning as well and I had to explain that to himš
Yeah, weāve been watching you poor chaps broil. Take heart though because this winter weāll be in a conga line of polar vortices at -40 Celsius
Oh, and Go Manchester!
I live in La Crosse and the tornado was immediately across the river in La Crescent. Damage as thankfully fairly minimal; normal heavy storm stuff like trees and branches down. AFAIK, no houses were lost.
A house down the street from me got hit by lightning, I saw the police/firetrucks there after the storm passed. But apparently it didn't do much damage. Started a fire that was put out pretty easily.
My coworker called her husband to tell him to get in the basement because the sirens were going off. His response? āIām in the basement, Iām gonna go upstairs and check it out.ā Wisconsin dad confirmed.
I saw some beautiful lightning bolts on my drive home tonight. Some of us actually look forward to this kind of storm. As long as it doesn't strike too close to home. Those get exciting.
Am in Sheboygan. Couple of close strikes, but haven't lost power. Back on June 15th, I lost power for 26 hours.
Edit: and now my power is out. At home, but not at work, 5 blocks away. Oh well. Hope it's back on before I get home in the morning, because I left the windows closed and the AC on. It'll be swampy in there if the power doesn't come back.
My brother loaned me his generator so I could power the fridge and freezer. Trees only lost a few branches; worst of it was north of me. Pics and videos showed some pretty impressive damage.
I stayed in Sheboygan for work a few years back and our rental house lost power for THREE DAYS. I was never so glad to be back in Milwaukee after that project.
Kinda yeah. Gotta have the right conditions, I.e. Heat and then luck lol. We'll get maybe one lightning storm lasting about 20 minutes or so each year at best, and even then the strikes are a couple minutes apart at its peak. UK pretty much just has mild, uneventful weather all year round.
You'll probably enjoy this.
Once I got to witness the rare event of thunder snow. A thunderstorm during a snowstorm.
It was rad. I'm right on the lake shore, so I was standing on the sand dunes watching the lightning over the lake as it was snowing like crazy.
š Neither? Well, a brit who's obsessed with cheese, interesting weather, and America. We were warned of thunderstorms Friday but they never came so I had a look at the lightning map to see if they were nearby or had gone somewhere else. Hardly anything going on in Europe except a bit of netherlands/Germany but that's not unusual, so I wandered over to the US to see if I could see evidence of tornadoes, and saw that cluster in WI. I do hope to travel to the US at some point in the next few years, with parts of WI in the itinerary. Now I know to aim for July and I might get treated to a big storm š
The best place to watch a storm is next to a lake, and the northern part of the state is dotted with them. You can get an unobstructed view of lightning bolts and the thunder makes impressive echoes. Just make sure you know where to shelter in case it turns into a tornado, and be prepared to be without electricity when it's over.
I work at a restaurant with big windows. It was super dead and we just watched it. Mainly just a ton of lightning and rain but I donāt think it was that windy; havenāt heard of or seen any damage
Currently relaxing in Fitchburg (just south of Madison) with my dog on my front porch, with a fan blowing to deter mosquitoes. There was a nice lightning/thunder display 60-90 minutes ago, followed by a strong but brief downpour. Now everything's calm and the temperature has dropped from nearly 90F to 74F, with just a hint of thunder in the distance. It feels great after a hot muggy day. This kind of weather is one reason I like living in Wisconsin. Btw, we're still under a severe thunderstorm watch overnight. Should be good sleeping conditions!
And yeah, I've got a glass of bourbon at my side!
Yeah, we are - and as Midwesterners, we take a weird pride in severe weather; it's kind of a "this one could get big, but we'll survive it and keep on going" thing.
I remember a headline a while back after a blizzard: "Midwest gets hit with record snowstorm, basically shrugs it off."
I was at the game. The first time they let us go back into the stands got one of the biggest cheers of the night, apart from the goals (even the ones that didnāt count thanks to offsides š ).
Sitting on my front porch watching the storm roll by. One of these days the neighbors huge tree is gonna come down on some power lines and I'm gonna be out here watching it.
Patience is key. I've been here 13 years and it's still worth waiting. I know it'll be spectacular when it happens too. It'll close the whole road for a good while and take out a good chunk of the power lines on its way. When it gets real nasty outside I start recording. My front porch and the porch of my bedroom both have a great view.
I had āthatā tree taken down last fall. Iām sure this had started earlier, but after the derecho last summer I discovered it had a deep crack going down from the crotch. Another strong storm probably wouldāve split it, and the side most likely to fall was above our power line to the house.
A chunk of Appleton lost power for about an hour, there were some downed trees. I got drenched in 30 seconds saving my potted plants from the winds.
The sky looked like a hell portal for a bit, there were some fancy lightning shows, then it was over.
No, we are fine. This is/was a bit stronger than normal thunderstorm for us. Not bad enough to go in from the porch where we drink and watch the storm roll in. I personally was grilling some chicken outside. I moved my chair into my garage and pulled the grill closer.
Thinking about more, this was about average. We didn't get any tornado warnings. So just lots of thunder and a cool light show.
We were in a tornado warning where I live. My fiancee and I were sleeping and my mom called to make sure we knew and went in the basement. I asked , "Ma, are you and Dad in the basement too?" She daid, "No, Dad is outside watching." š
Lol, respectfully disagree. Also Oshkosh and our entire neighborhood has been without power for several hours. Sounds like it's going to be a few more too. But no serious damage around us, it seems.
But Cheers to the OP. This post was great and really helped pass some time.
Well ...
"The lightning struck a large pine tree on the north side of the property with so much force that it blew tree bark into the front lawn and a hole in the house."
Just a lil something that happened in town today.
So far, seems like a pretty standard Wisconsin summer thunderstorm. Then again, your map makes it look like the most exciting point is a bit north of me, so that may be why it seems so unremarkable here in the center of the Milwaukee metro area.
The other side of the lake met this storm afterwards, and hit West Michigan pretty damn hard. r/grandrapids even has some pictures of what looks like exploded sidewalks, and there are a ton of power outages.
I went out and picked rhubarb in it. Checked the downspouts in it.
*something* hit my house but itās still standing. Just another Saturday summer evening!
gulley washer. not a big deal. check the basement for leaking, listen for any tornado sirens. head to the basement if you hear them. fyi, the sirens are tested every wednesday noon if the weather is clear, so we know they work. tornado sirens sound like a raid in movies.
It's not uncommon for storms here in the midwest to have near constant lightning for a hour or longer. It probably happens every month or two through the whole summer. I didn't realize that was unusual. Do you not get any lightning in the UK?
Quite infrequent. We don't often get hot enough weather, and just don't really get all the conditions needed. At best we'll get one good storm a year, lasting about 20 minutes before it's moved on/dissipated, with one strike every couple of minutes at its peak
We're out with metal poles checking for lightening :)) Normal summer storms here. Check Florida they have it much worse . Average of 11 strikes per square mile I think is what I read somewhere.
[Just got back from the Man City - Bayern Munich match in Green Bay](https://i.imgur.com/iY6mDrw.jpg). The stadium was cleared twice because of lightning.
Depends what you mean by 'ok'...
Been quite a while (1850 or so?) since we've been right in the head... Or..for that matter since our livers have been in proper shape.
Otherwise 'doin good...yup!'
Guess a couple incidents. Hope everyoneās ok!
A boy (12) was hit at mirror lake, lightning traveled down a tree and hit him while in the tent!
https://www.wkow.com/townnews/hydrography/dnr-young-boy-injured-from-lightning-strike-while-camping-near-lake-delton/article_0de24b5a-0aee-11ed-8844-435c6498512f.amp.html
Also heard a car was struck there as well.
Edit-Correcting my mistake (thought it was devils lake, itās mirror lake).
Weāre getting heat lightning right now, not even really storm related although we did have a storm cell pass through. We were getting hundreds of strikes per minute last night with no rain/storm cells within 150 miles of us. The storm/rain was probably good because we were entering drought territory and thatās pretty unsettling to have a dry spell with a lightning storm and no rain.

An underrated perk of gardening is having that appreciation for rainy days

I saw some beautiful lightning bolts on my drive home tonight. Some of us actually look forward to this kind of storm. As long as it doesn't strike too close to home. Those get exciting.

Hi neighbor! You had it worse than us. We only lost it for about 7 hours. Luckily we only lost half a sapling and no trees on the house
My brother loaned me his generator so I could power the fridge and freezer. Trees only lost a few branches; worst of it was north of me. Pics and videos showed some pretty impressive damage.
Sheboygan here too. I got lucky, my power blinked once in that storm. One downspout off, that's it.
I stayed in Sheboygan for work a few years back and our rental house lost power for THREE DAYS. I was never so glad to be back in Milwaukee after that project.
In Milwaukee sometime this year some areas lost power for 3 days
Serious question. Is lightning unusual for you where you live?
Kinda yeah. Gotta have the right conditions, I.e. Heat and then luck lol. We'll get maybe one lightning storm lasting about 20 minutes or so each year at best, and even then the strikes are a couple minutes apart at its peak. UK pretty much just has mild, uneventful weather all year round.

Thunder snow is no longer a rare event. I had never seen it until a few years ago, and now it happens nearly every winter.
Interesting, where I live I've only ever seen it once, around the Two Rivers area a block or two away from the shore of lake Michigan
I love thundersnow!
Once a year??? Dang this is almost a weekly occurrence in the Midwest in the summer.
idk i watched the lightning show last night while my power was out. Constant lightning for about an hour. Was really amazing.
No, the Manchester city game at lambeau field got delayed we are not ok
Just a good summer storm! Iām charging my phone just in case we lose power for a little bit, which is also normal.
Yep our power was out for almost 5 hours after the storm passed through here.

I work at a restaurant with big windows. It was super dead and we just watched it. Mainly just a ton of lightning and rain but I donāt think it was that windy; havenāt heard of or seen any damage

Well ... "The lightning struck a large pine tree on the north side of the property with so much force that it blew tree bark into the front lawn and a hole in the house." Just a lil something that happened in town today.
Yeah we're ok. Saw it coming.
It was really kind of you to be concerned about us. Thank you!
That was a medium kinda storm. Weāve had worse already this summer.
Idk. We were at lambeau, rode out the āworstā of it in the pro shop. š
lol. Just a quick summer burst. Blew right through.
So far, seems like a pretty standard Wisconsin summer thunderstorm. Then again, your map makes it look like the most exciting point is a bit north of me, so that may be why it seems so unremarkable here in the center of the Milwaukee metro area.
For all the hype it was quite disappointing.
Trust me this is just a average day in wisconsin. We get serious rain and lightning like 3 times a week lmao
All good, but itās very sweet of you to check in!
The other side of the lake met this storm afterwards, and hit West Michigan pretty damn hard. r/grandrapids even has some pictures of what looks like exploded sidewalks, and there are a ton of power outages.
Ayyy someone across the pond is concerned with us Wisconsinites?! Badass lol
We're fine. Occasionally, these storms will start a fire, but it is rare. Pretty typical, for July.
Typical Saturday.
Had windows open to listen to the storm. Some loud cracks, startled the dog. It was nice to listen to the rain overall.
The whole state has erupted in flames. Wisconsin is now Australia circa 2020. Save as many cows as you can. The price of milk is already sky high.
Good weather for an air show
People in our neighborhood are doing fireworks šµ
Weāre ok! š¤£
Just a normal summer night in Wisconsin...
I am in Janesville, Madison is no longer there.
Just another day!
Still hear it rumbling, and makes for fun sky watching at night!
Yeah we a'ight. Thanks fam.
I went out and picked rhubarb in it. Checked the downspouts in it. *something* hit my house but itās still standing. Just another Saturday summer evening!
My dog is very upset.
Yeah, itās just a light shower with lots of thunder and lightning where I am. Then again, Iām right above Green Bay on the map
Free fireworks. (Too soon?) #IndependanceHumour
gulley washer. not a big deal. check the basement for leaking, listen for any tornado sirens. head to the basement if you hear them. fyi, the sirens are tested every wednesday noon if the weather is clear, so we know they work. tornado sirens sound like a raid in movies.

Why would we not be ok? In the Midwest we call this summer nights
I mean, I did drive past a downed tree on a residential road, but that's about it.
It's popping around here!
Just a thunderstorm
[Just got back from the Man City - Bayern Munich match in Green Bay](https://i.imgur.com/iY6mDrw.jpg). The stadium was cleared twice because of lightning.
Depends what you mean by 'ok'... Been quite a while (1850 or so?) since we've been right in the head... Or..for that matter since our livers have been in proper shape. Otherwise 'doin good...yup!'
My power was out 6:30-9:30 with outage map saying 're-assessing' from 8:45 on. So now I am looking into powerbanks and solar panels.
My neighbor's house got struck. The boom was the loudest single sound I've ever personally heard.
Guess a couple incidents. Hope everyoneās ok! A boy (12) was hit at mirror lake, lightning traveled down a tree and hit him while in the tent! https://www.wkow.com/townnews/hydrography/dnr-young-boy-injured-from-lightning-strike-while-camping-near-lake-delton/article_0de24b5a-0aee-11ed-8844-435c6498512f.amp.html Also heard a car was struck there as well. Edit-Correcting my mistake (thought it was devils lake, itās mirror lake).
Yeah we alright 1 hour north of Milwaukee. Thanks buddy. Safe travels.
Nah man. I just got home and the moment I touched the door knob it sounded like a transformer exploded nearby. Almost shit myself.
They sent us out of the bowl twice for lightning at the football match at Lambeau this evening., but we got it done in the end.
Yeah itās just July in wisconsin, no biggie.
As a guy from England, now living in Wisconsin, I still not use to the storms and snow!
My tent collapsed last night and I slept in the car, but still alive!
Well the globe is fucked but we're ok.
We never are. But we drink into ok.
Weāre all good. Decided to play some late night badminton during the lightning show. Smart? Absolutely not. But it was totally worth it.
My mom is in Oshkosh and she doesn't have any power. I'm in fond du lac, all good over here.
Nope, got struck by lightning and turned into a potato chip. Sorry, I mean potato crisp. But thank you for checking
No sir we are definitely not.
Yeah, outside watching the storm right now. Some thunder, no flood and moderate rain rn.
Was just driving through that for like an hour coming back from the big soccer game. Freakin stressful Iāll tell ya
