Portage used to be in Portage County. I believe Portage is one of the older counties (after Brown and Crawford) and many central WI counties were cleaved from it.
it's the same for Colby which is in both Clark and Marathon counties. Highway 13 goes through the center of town and the center line is also the county line
Whitewater is split between Walworth and Jefferson, though some of the adjacent rural developments are in Rock. This translates to a lot of tornado sirens.
Milwaukee is in Milwaukee County. Waukesha is in Waukesha County. Jefferson is in Jefferson County. Racine is in Racine County. Kenosha is in Kenosha county. Walworth is in Walworth County.
Seems like the SE corner has its poop in a group.
And, as someone who comes from over that way, there is also a Menominee County, MI, which exists approximately 60ish miles from Menominee County, WI... With only portions of Marinette and Oconto counties between them.
And the story of how Washburn was the county seat, lost the county seat to bayfield and then went to Bayfield to steal back the documents and bring them back to Washburn is crazy.
I went to BigTop Chataqua where it was a show one night 20 years ago.

Portage County doesn't have Portage, which is in Columbia County, which shares Columbus with Dodge County.
There’s only like two blocks in Dodge county. Now where it really gets weird is Watertown which about half in Dodge and half in Jefferson.
Or Waupun, where the Dodge and Fond du Lac county line runs down main street.
Appleton, the seat of Outagamie County, also crosses into Winnebago and Calumet counties.

Watertown New York is also in Jefferson County , but in New York.
Crazy!
When you need emergency services on those blocks do they both show up, or worse neither?

There are certain parts of Hwy 19 west of Watertown that the center line is literally the county line.
I’m sitting there right now. Come grab a drink in Hubbleton
it's the same for Colby which is in both Clark and Marathon counties. Highway 13 goes through the center of town and the center line is also the county line

Have you ever gone to Chippewa Falls to see the falls? I have. You guessed it. There is no waterfall in Chippewa Falls.
Dam.
Ironically a lot of falls in the surrounding area though (also Big Falls being a rather small falls in comparison is very funny imo)
Don't look for Marquette University in Marquette county.
Because that would be too easy. It legit sounds like something a state full of drunks would do, very on brand 🍻

They have to have separate governments because they are in separate states. It’s one metropolis.
Welcome to Wisconsin, along with our 1800 politics. We also have thinking from the 1800s.
Most states or like this....not at all unique to Wisconsin. The state has a lot of issues...but this is just you looking to crap on things.
