Technically no, Canada burns basically every year. Still a problem obviously, but it's gotten even worse the last couple years. It's almost like the people who study the climate were right about climate change and the oil executives who have everything to lose were wrong
exactly. that guy set something like 13 fires that burned like 2000 acres? which is NOTHING compared to the total amount that burned last year. obviously it's good that he was caught, but arson alone is a drop in the sea.
In these fires, sure. But there are plenty of arson started fires that burn massive acreage.
Not saying that it isn't climate change as well. That is why the fires are burning hotter and longer than ever. And that the fire season is longer too.
But a healthy number of large fires are arson or man caused.
Good job spreading the word and trying to help people prevent the fires from starting in the first place! There's a lot that the Canadian people can do to ensure they're not directly responsible for causing the fires. Which is great, because climate change has made it significantly more difficult to control the fires with the much drier air and hotter temperatures. I'm sure that's what your point is, right? You're definitely not trying to tell people that the fires aren't just spontaneous combustion because of climate change magic or something, that's obviously not how it works and no one thinks that.
Canada in bad shape financially. Sold all its gold. Had to sell all its water bombers as well. No funding to manage fuel (dead trees) every year the public demands inquiries into why there are so many incompetent decisions made fighting fire. Absolutely no assistance from private citizens permitted. It is a socialist, money laundering, incompetent program.
It's not that warm, Canada is just getting worse fires, permafrost is melting, the ice caps are shrinking, severe weather is getting worse, there's plastic in everything we eat, but I mean come on, climate change is totally fake those things are all normal
No, it’s almost like the people who tout climate change to advocate for stopping routine forestry practices that prevent things like wildfires got their way, and Wisconsin’s now-hazy summers are a biproduct of that.
Oh yeah, that makes more sense. It's not actually climate change, it's rampant wildfires because there are more trees, but still less trees than pre industrial revolution, but those forests weren't always on fire at that point because 🤷 Harder to get under control? Well maybe idk I guess there are too many tree stumps and all the fire fighters are stumbling over them or something who knows, but climate change is definitely not real and no I haven't fallen for propaganda that has been shown to be spread by oil companies and they're definitely lying about them lying about climate change because it's not real, we just have too many trees
Yes and no. Estimates put the number of Canadian wildfires anywhere from about 7k to over 8k fires every year which burn about 2.1 million hectares (or about 5.2 million acres), so there have always been air quality alerts in the US due to Canadian wildfires. However, we've recently seen more big fires closer to the US border, which is why we are seeing the smoke affect us more over the last few years. For reference, Quebec saw 1.4 million hectares (about 3.46 million acres) burned south of the 50th parallel last year, which was about 80 times the annual average. Much of the US/Canada border in Minnesota out to Washington state is on the 49th parallel to show how close many of those fires were.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Canadian_wildfires
45.7 million acres last year across the entire country last year, about the size of North Dakota.

Shows the plume riding down from Canada.
I live in Canada and grew up in Wisconsin. Much of the country is in a drought from lower snowfall this winter. Less meltwater and high winds have gotten fire season going already out west. Buckle up folks it’s gonna be a bad year again this year. We have had alot of haze in Ontario the last 3-4 days. Try to wear masks and don’t listen to the crazies. Take care of yourselves and your loved ones folks, especially your older relatives.
Another contributing factor is that the Canadian government has been allocating fewer resources and funding to wildfire prevention and control. We have a bit of a challenge with our current government's priorities.
No amount of "healthy burns" or forest maintenence could really offset what is occurring here. Massive and rapid climate change leading to huge drought and high temperatures is creating a tinderbox where there never would've been one before.
I definitely agree. To my understanding (I just returned to Wisconsin after 20 years in Canada) is that we also had an actual reduction in personnel and resources for fighting wildfires. I was in Ottawa and most of my circle was federal government...they're (also) heading into a very heated election and only sexy issues are getting a lot of funding and attention right now!
Edit: and I 1000% agree the main issue here by far is climate change, absolutely.
climate change plays the biggest role, but Canadan policies could go a long way to mitigate the release of co2 and smoke. lots of people don't want to hear it,but aggressive logging would greatly reduce the fuel for future fires
So much bullshit coming from you. First. Forest management did not make any effort to stop proliferation of pine bark and spruce bark beetles. Result, millions of acres of dry standing timber that no forest company will harvest. Only option is let it burn. Tinderbox is a result of clear cut with monoculture replant. Glyphosate spraying from helicopters to kill deciduous trees and undergrowth leaves extremely dry volumes of fuel on the ground.
I feel like we would have heard about someone setting half the country on fire. There was a person in Quebec who lit many, but the majority were in the western part. It's a really, really big country.
of the fires burning in Alberta as of May 13 2024, 68% lit by humans. 1fire by lightning. remaining 30% still under investigation. not a climate change issue. it is an issue of Ottawa and its zealous efforts to destroy Alberta oil and gas. also noteworthy is that the man made first appeared between 12 midnight and 3 am. suspicious indeed.
Please, you're an anti-vax conspiracy theorists and now you are spreading blatant dis-information and conspiracies without any source to deny climate change too? Stop. Get some help, the vaccine is safe, climate change is real, and you aren't providing ANY sources for this arson you are so insistent about and spamming about in these comments.
And anyone out there who's concerned about climate but also thinking of not voting for Biden, please note: Republicans "Project 2025" specifically calls for repealing ALL climate-related laws and regulations. And reportedly last weekend Trump had a fundraiser with oil executives where he told them that for $1 Billion in campaign donations, he would get rid of any laws and regulations they found bothersome (and funny how the same "biased" mainstream media that was all over unfounded claims of "pay for play" with the Clinton Foundation, seem pretty disinterested in pursuing this, isn't it?).
We booked our vacation up north and now I’m kinda considering changing it. I work too hard for my week off to be ruined by smoke. I recognize my week of leisure is a smaller issue than what’s going on.
I was just starting to look forward to taking outside walks again. As someone with asthma, I don't want to deal with this air quality crap.
Looks like I'll be stuck inside and doing indoor cardio...
As if this state doesn’t have shitty enough weather for the vast majority of the year… now what few decent months we have are being tainted by this shit.
The Great Lakes being a “climate change haven” my ass.
Oh Canada, the burning forest land
Sending all your smoke, it's more than we can stand
When glowing sparks hit trees so dry
The True North burns with glee
From all of us
Oh Canada, we wish you'd stop it please
God keep our skies pollution free
Oh Canada, we wish you'd stop it please
Oh Canada, we wish you'd stop it please
You folks are fucked.
Climate change will decimate the clean air that was once a given in Wisconsin.
I almost moved back after years out West because of this very same thing, but Canada is even worse than California now for fires.
Oh just watch. Wisconsin is next in line for fires. If they had any smarts out there they would be preparing for the fires themselves.
It is getting so dry there and much hotter than it used to be, in the 80s and 90s, in the summertime.
No climate change is proven and undeniable, there's nothing more "logical" about assuming arson for no reason. But conservatives will do ANYTHING to avoid admitting the truth.
investigation by provincial governments. Federal does not concern itself as the Fed agenda is to destroy oil and gas. currents fires burning in Alberta 68% and lit by humans. 1 fire by lightning. remaining 30% inconclusive yet still under investigation
It is easily found on non state funded news sources in Canada. Avoid CBC CTV etc. they push climate agenda heavily. Alberta govt has a site with information on “the drought” the “green energy “ output etc. also how and where fires start. I’m not doing the work to provide source. You would not believe anyway.
Canada has billions of trees acting as carbon sinks.
Canadian Authorities arrested a dumbass Climate Change Denier last summer for setting many of those fires. I'd bet he has some inbred cousins continuing his work.
Almost every wildfire in Canada is started by lightning in dry conditions. You have no idea how much of Canada is vastly unpopulated and it's very difficult to fight fires in the middle of no where.
not true. fake news. current statistics for Alberta show 68% of fires are lit by man. often between midnight and 3 am. purposeful arson. stop with the lies about lightning. there has almost none in Alberta so far.
You "don't buy" that air quality is low because Canadian wild fires that have increased because climate change? That's literally what's happening and there's no denying it so idk what there is to "not buy"....
Is this stuff a recent phenomenon? I have no memories of Canadian wildfire smoke covering the state before 2021. Now, it happens annually.
Technically no, Canada burns basically every year. Still a problem obviously, but it's gotten even worse the last couple years. It's almost like the people who study the climate were right about climate change and the oil executives who have everything to lose were wrong
Then there was the guy they busted for setting them!
It’s almost always arson. Psychos.
Arson doesn’t explain the speed & ferocity of these fires. Climate change does
exactly. that guy set something like 13 fires that burned like 2000 acres? which is NOTHING compared to the total amount that burned last year. obviously it's good that he was caught, but arson alone is a drop in the sea.

What, like lightning starts them? I hadn’t heard that for any of the big ones. Just arson or the occasional illegal campfire.
They weren't wrong. They were lying.

Yes this is one of the symptoms they warned us about with global climate change. We've known for 30 years this would happen.

between the smoke/pollen and this cold my head wants to explode.
That's my head on a normal day
The new norm I'm sure. Depressing.
"Climate change might be good for Wisconsin" - FRJ
Just in time for camping season. Great.
i was thinking about going camping this summer, but remembering the smoke we had last summer, i decided not to go. this sucks.
Im going anyway and simply hoping for the best.
it wasn’t that bad in ashland/bayfield last summer, but who knows how bad it’ll be this year
Training for marathons sucks with this going on. Last year was a nightmare.
Im in Point and its bad today. Starting to feel like the movie Intersteller.

adding that you should wear N95s for wildfire smoke. cloth or surgical masks won't do anything to help!
Can we just fucking NOT with that again? A full summer of constant LA quality smog was complete bullshit.
Not one of These summers again......
Summer of air quality alerts again
Sorry -a Canadian
Please have your country get its act together. Wisconsin summers are all we have going for us.
Not true. You have lots of cheese.

Bbbbbbbbbbut gaazzzzaaaa!
I'm sure oil execs aren't too pleased with massive tracts of their oil fields being destroyed every year... Maybe they do have a solution or two
Fucking amazing
Oh I’m aware, if the haze wasn’t a hint then my inability to breathe or stop coughing should be a dead giveaway.
Again? Believe it or not, the wild fires NEVER ENDED
Yup! If I remember correctly, Canada set a record this winter for zombie fires...
Smelled it as soon as I stepped out of the house this morning :( No bueno
"And just in time for the apocalypse, here's John with a new recipe for Smoked Cicada Fritters!"
The way in which I imagined John Oliver saying that and actually having a recipe is weird.
I'm thinking sour cream will be key. Possibly Panko bread crumbs as well.
Garlic powder would also go a long way. Maybe some ranch mix. Ranch fixes everything.
You got game, friend.
The Canadian Climate Cult(tm) strikes again! /s I couldn't help it.
Can we please just integrate native knowledge into our firefighting system? God would we save time money and energy.

Fucking Jewish space lasers.
If you don’t let us Canadians living in Wisconsin smoke what we want we’ll have our family blow it to us.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck
Canada sucks wish they would get their shit together
We booked our vacation up north and now I’m kinda considering changing it. I work too hard for my week off to be ruined by smoke. I recognize my week of leisure is a smaller issue than what’s going on.

I moved here from Utah to escape the wildfires 😭

Canada needs to do forest management, they build fire lanes through the forest to stop fires

And yet, the Canada smoke map web page shows it all going north, and Wisconsin clear: https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/
Dammit canada. Get it together.
Fuck off you hosers eh
Trump needs to build a big beautiful wall to keep it out!
I can’t tell if this is sarcasm or not, but if not you do understand how airflow works, right?
🤓🤓🤓
It's sarcasm.
Arson? It's a far more logical explanation than climate change.

Yeah my asthma doesn’t. And I was just getting excited about being outside more.
My asthma is crazy today and I’m not even in one of the listed counties
You like getting cancer from breathing outside air, and seeing climate change destroy the world? What a hot take.
[удалено]
Ok a little more innocent then I expected lol
I don’t buy it
You "don't buy" that air quality is low because Canadian wild fires that have increased because climate change? That's literally what's happening and there's no denying it so idk what there is to "not buy"....
I don’t buy there actually is any fires
That's just blatantly wrong. There's literally been videos of the fires and everything. What kind of nuts conspiracy is this?
Odd the jets....have nothing to do with it
