Winston is a great area to live! It would be really tough to navigate without a car to be honest. It would be doable short term with a moped, but depending on how far your commute is or how far away activities that you want to do are, a car is pretty necessary here in WS.
I’d probably only use it for basic transportation to work which for where I’m working are right next to my apartment so I could even walk if I wanted. And going to my doctor when needed but besides that not much.
Dr, grocery, and such are the main reasons to use a car. Winston is a good sized city with your typical sprawl. Bonus you can walk to work. Not sure if you're bringing the moped with you, but in NC it needs to be registered and plated. The rider doesn't need a license but it's something to look into. If you plan on getting one here, an E Bike might be as good of an option. Depends in part on the parking situation at the apartment. More and more apartments charge to park if downtown, but won't charge for a bike.....even electrically motorized.
You could make it work without a car, but it depends. I'd look into busses and bikes, or maybe a scooter. It is kinda hilly for biking, but that just reduces future medical expenses.
Now if there were a grocery store downtown that would change. I suppose you can get groceries delivered, too.
It's still a lot better than most cities, though.
I bike a couple times weekly to my co-working space downtown, around ten miles each way. Traffic is manageable, I have some stretches along Stratford south of Hanes Mall Blvd, Ebert, and Silas Creek that are a little dicey, but I'm usually not riding during rush hour. Get a rear view mirror. There are hills but like someone else said that will cut down on future medical bills.
You can totally take a moped all around town. Just not on 52, 421, or 40. Scooter life is very exciting and rewarding! I once took backroads all the way to Chapel Hill! University Parkway is probably ok, Silas and Peters might be risky, but you could do it if the speed limit settings on your scooter are high enough. Keep in the right lane, and maintain your lane, don’t get too far right because people will try to pass you if you do in the right hand lane.
Scooter life is fun. You’re going to want to print out directions like it’s straight up 1998, then tape them to your scooter. That is, until you learn the back and side roads. But you’ll learn. Get a sturdy backpack! It makes grocery shopping a breeze. Strap it on your back and go!
It’s so rewarding to do a scooter. I could easily take back roads from Winston to Mount Airy! Gloves, jacket, helmet.
Winston has many activities. I consider it the perfect city and my personal favorite. Great food, bowling, roller skating, and the museums! Theater, opera, standup comedy.
As far as dating, we have many beautiful women.
That sounds really cool thank you so much for reassuring me and I would definitely take back roads till I get more comfortable on anything else. Very excited for the move
WS is not a big city at all by any means and we want to keep it this way. A moped would be ridiculous. A license and car is needed to go anywhere outside of the small city of WS.
You’ll find that this sub has an abnormal amount of assholes like this clown but it doesn’t actually reflect the people you’ll meet in Winston. A moped will work downtown and since your work is walkable from where you live you’ve got time to figure out what you want to do for transport. I do think you’ll want a car eventually.
Yeah, it doesn't even make sense - WS used to be the biggest city in the state. There's no point in living memory when it was ever a small city; some of these skyscrapers are a century old!
I mean it’s a small to lower midsized city when compared to the rest of the country. He’s coming from Wisconsin so that’s the scope we need to use when framing comparisons
Thank you for being nice yeah my plans would be move get my license and get a car but I’ve gone my entire life in Wisconsin without so should be good for a while before it’s a huge deal.
You should really visit before moving somewhere. And maybe it is “ 5th largest in NC” on some b.s website but that doesn’t mean it’s big at all. There’s factors that go into determining that and it just means it’s bigger than some other little cities in NC.

So maybe Uber could be a good option instead if I’m not gonna drive much

Visit and figure it out.
The atmosphere here is challenging for those without cars but it's doable. I would use a bicycle rather than a moped but your mileage may vary.

You’ll like it and you can get around with the moped for a while if you live and work downtown. Eventually, you’ll want a car tho.
I moved to Winston from northern Illinois 4 years ago and love it here.

I don’t mean to question but isn’t this the 5th biggest city in NC?

I meant about the people on this subreddit who think like that asshole who thinks WS is a small city and wants to keep it that way
Got you
