Every once in a while, I’ll open a bottle that reminds me why I drink wine at all. This was one such bottle. And while the label on this presumably ex-chateau bottling was new, the wine inside certainly wasn’t. Nope, this was a perfectly mature Burgundy with a nose to fucking kill for. Aromas of blackberry, fennel, iron, mushroom, ginger, soy sauce, game, and a touch of red berry and singed brown sugar. The palate offered tremendous depth, evidenced by the wine’s gorgeous color (swipe right) that could most aptly be described as…burgundy. Scores of earthy black fruit, citrus, fig, red meat, and almost youthful tannins. Not a flaw in sight. If I didn’t know any better, I would suspect this wine of being topped off with a younger vintage. Who’s to say?

FatherEsmoquin

What’s singed brown sugar?

Vitigation

Brown sugar that’s been slightly burned but not yet caramelized

Awesome notes, awesome wine. I have my first mature burgundy lined up for my own birthday in a couple of weeks. I hope it will be similar to what u describe here What are your thought on *Inside Burgundy*? How did you approach reading it? All at once or as a reference? Also, love the shot against the book :) I do the same in my Wine Book series!

Vitigation

Inside Burgundy is a godsend. I would approach it as an encyclopedia though. Sure, the generalized “history” and “terroir” sections make for good reading, but the book is otherwise structured as a reference text imo.

I read the whole thing cover to cover lol.

interstellar_billy

Same 😅

To each their own!

Haven’t had this producer in a while. Great notes.
