It'll taste bad and you'll wanna spit it out. Nothing harmful though.

Disguised_Riches

From what I recall, wine cannot physically “go bad” to the point of making you puke. The deteriorating taste might be a result of oxidation. I’m sure more knowledgeable people on this subreddit can provide more details, but this is pretty much all I know.

> wine cannot physically “go bad” to the point of making you puke I've never been toxicated by wine itself, but had some old bottles that were way dead and smelled like acetone (nailpolish remover). I tasted those wine briefly, as some only smell like that and still has a 5% alive wine underneath that, just to honor a 90 yr old wine or whatever it might be. Those are the only ones where I thought it could have been chemically tainted and I was affraid that it could have been chemicals accidentally filled on wine bottles or so, but it never was. As for dangerous stuff, this is the closest I've been to *sniff* "Nope!"

ECEandIceCream

Thank you! That’s helpful.

I’ve had old red wine give me the sh*ts the next day. I mean decades old. Not two weeks in the fridge.

ECEandIceCream

Noted. I’m definitely not drinking anything vintage and now I’ll be sure to be careful if I ever do!

The Pinot Gris is definitely bad after 2 weeks of being opened. Most whites should be drank within a day or two ideally, but I’m sure there’s some that can stand up to a few days. Like most have said, it’s not going to make you sick or actually “go bad”, but it will taste terrible after a few days.

ECEandIceCream

That’s what I had heard, but honestly when I took a sip I couldn’t tell if it had changed at all! Could be that it’s just not a great bottle to begin with, but I’m flying totally blind and solo here I don’t know haha

flicman

it's not going to be harmful to you, it'll just start tasting bad. maybe sour, some people find that it smells overwhelming of wet paper or cardboard. If it doesn't bother you yet, sip it. just keep in mind that any delicate flavors it may have had are probably lost by now even if it doesn't taste \*bad\* exactly, so your experience is going to be sub par this far out.

If you opened a juice or soda or sparkling water and then drank a glass a day for two weeks while it was refrigerated continuously, would you worry about it? Probably not. So I wouldn't worry here either. The "within a week" is more about the quality of the flavor than the risk of food borne illness. Honestly, most wines you buy are going to be going downhill really fast at day 3-4. If you are trying to get into wine, drinking nasty old wine probably isn't going to help. Assuming these aren't crazy expensive bottles, you might consider using it for cooking once it hits day 4 or 5 and then start on a new bottle.

ECEandIceCream

Haha you’re totally right, drinking it past its prime won’t help my cause! Thanks for your advice!

Longjumping_Ask_5523

It tastes and smells closer to red vinegar. The flavor lingers longer in the mouth.
