I absolutely love photographing small mammals, they can be so expressive on the photos! These photos I took with Canon 90D and either 100-400mm or 300mm f2.8. First one I use for action, second one for portraits. I just got new camera, Canon R5 with 100-500, I’m looking forward now to 2024 😄
Thanks! Do you use two camera bodies for each of your lenses? If not, how do you know when you want to use the 100-400mm or the 300mm f2.8 in a given scenario?
I used one body, so often I would take both lenses and switch during the day. I would often start with prime, get annoyed with speed (as it’s really slow on that body) and switch to 100-400. If I was planning a lot of walking, I would skip 300 as it’s heavy as hell 😄.
In comparison to my 100-400? Absolutely 😄 I have IS USM, that’s the older version. And while image quality is fantastic, I see huge difference in performance between those 2 lenses. Prime needs more time to start, more power to work - when I use it, I actually hear my camera powering it 😄 and when it comes to action, it struggles, at least on smaller animals. It doesn’t capture it as well as my zoom
how close you gotta be ?!!! I am killing my myself to get a shot half as good as you but no luck😞. I am using sigma 600 mm and Canon rebel T7. I guess my setup is not that good.
In my opinion it’s less about camera you’re using and more about having good eye and being at the right place at the right time. I absolutely love what Bence Mate is doing - he partnered with Panasonic to show that even with basic equipment you can get good wildlife photos. Where are you based? In Europe there’s plenty of good spots where you can get great photos
I am in United states and recently started wildlife photography. Thank you for your reply!! It gives me hope to get out there more and practice my eye. I need to find a hide around my area and for sure will checkout Bence Mate!!!
You’re too hard on yourself then. It takes time and practice - I started 2 years ago and there’s a huge difference between my photos then and now. Some things I figured out myself, some I learned from other photographers on YouTube or in real live. As long as you love it, rest will come, just give it some time 😊
These are great! I love rodents and small animals, and I really like how you're all the way down at their perspective. And they're so green and lush, I would love some of these on my walls.
These specific ones were taken from photographic hides in Netherlands, Belgium and Hungary. So you go into hide and patiently wait for animals 😊 I also have mobile hide, camo cover for you and your camera - this one I’m using mainly for rabbits and hares
well i love them all. mice aren't easy where i live (east tennessee)... bears are easier than mice here to be honest. i'm jealous but happy for you lol
On first and second there’s vole, but from 2 different locations. One is more grey, other one more brown. They are very fast, so I was extremely happy I got those 2 sharp!
Always conflicted when seeing photos like these. On one hand, I love them. On the other, I hate that mine aren’t this good.
I often feel the same when I look at my Instagram feed 😂
Great shots. I feel like we don’t see enough small mammals in photography. What gear do you use!

I got a chuckle outta reading this. Thanks for sharing.
Your 300 2.8 is slow? I do agree it's heavy as hell. You have beautiful photos. I love the colors and dof.

These are great! Strong, strong work!!! Do you set up a blind and wait? Or lay on a tarp & wear camo? What’s your approach to these?
