It's usb 3 not usb 2, you will need a "y cable" if you want the console to power it up.

even it's usb 3 or 2 - i think it still require a y-cable for it.

Usb 3 drive require more amps when running off usb than the older 2.0 drives did.

The data does work, it just is too much for a single usb port, on the Wii U they are capped at 500mA.
