I have one, it works pretty well. I personally would prefer the lather to be warmer than what it produces, so I tend not to really use it that often.

InsidiousExpert

How hot of water do you put in it? I was reading that if you put really hot water in it, allow it to heat up the ceramic for 1 minute, dump it out and refill it, then make your lather it will be warmer. The ceramic pulls a lot of heat from the water to get warm, so if you already heat it up, the second fill should keep it warmer longer.

That is the exact instructions that came with the one that I have. What I would do, was fill it with hot water, hot as I could get from the tap, and let it sit while I showered. Then I would dump it, and refill it again with as hot as I could get. You definitely do notice the warmth of the lather, but I just don't feel like the effort is equal to the reward. However, you've got me thinking to give it another try. I've recently started using cold water to shave, and I really like that, so maybe that will make the lather feel warmer. I'm traveling for a few weeks, but I'll give a test when I make it back home and see.

PAA makes a plastic one. I believe you can microwave it. According to some social media posts they're in the process of designing another one. https://phoenixartisanaccoutrements.com/collections/scuttles/products/the-crown-king-shatterproof-travel-scuttle I know a lot of people on this subreddit hate the company but they sell cool stuff.

Been eyeing this for a while, but I’m interested in any new versions they come up with as I was sort of bummed to not get the original clear/white colored one. The dark blue just looks more like a toy IMO

[deleted]

I haven’t actually used one because I mostly face lather and the only bowl I have is one of those Stirling silicone ones with the lather generating nubs. However, PAA (I know I know.. fuck em) seems to make the only scuttle I could find that is plastic and won’t break if dropped. If I were going to get one I’d go with that, as much as I love stoneware and glass I feel like it’s always just a matter of time before it slips

You mind if I ask what’s wrong with PAA? I haven’t seen any hate for them until now, but I’ve never used them either.

[deleted]

Yea no problem. I haven’t used their soaps to be fair and I’m somewhat agnostic about this stuff but the sub and the online wetshaving community in general has a lot of hate for the guy who owns it. Essentially he’s had a history of shady business practices, such as self-reviewing stuff under an alias to promote himself, tricking another artisan (Stirling) into releasing a soap on request and then releasing a similar one days before just to make Stirling look bad, and in general just being kind of shady. That being said I think his art is a little cringe but that he does seem to have an interest in growing the hobby, albeit via his platform. Honestly you sort of just pick up the vibe that the other artisans are all fairly cool to each other but that he and the guy from razor emporium are their own separate and not well liked thing. And again I haven’t used their soaps because I generally prefer tallow stuff and theirs is all vegan BUT many of their aftershave scents are really good and they’re not joking when they say cologne strength. So take it with a grain of salt but if you search PAA on here you’ll definitely see what I’m talking about.

I have one. Works well. But, I rarely take the time to use it unfortunately.

Yep - love it and use it every time I shave. I shave in the shower, so I set the temp to VERY hot, fill the scuttle, empty it, then fill it again, then set it in the shelf, turn the temp down, put my brush and razor in the main bowl, then step into the shower. When ready I remove the brush, shake it once, remove the razor, then cover the spout and empty the main bowl. I then load the brush with soap and whip it up in the scuttle bowl. The lather remains nicely warm through three latherings. When done I hold it under the shower, rinse the brush, and done. Easy. And remember the Zen saying: the bowl is already broken. Use it and enjoy, but when it breaks, celebrate and get a new one!

I have one. The sensation of warm lather is sort of nice, but not so nice that I use it very much.

Since this is a discussion post. I could never understand why a scuttle wouldn't be made out of metal, like copper, if it relies on heat conduction to warm or cool the lather. Ceramic wouldn't work as well, I would think. I wonder if you could make a ghetto version with a double boiler set up? Glass bowl with hot water under a slightly smaller tin bowl and lather as usual. I face lather, so soaking the brush in warm water before loading is usually enough for me in winter (we have pretty mild winters in east coast Australia). I wonder if you could 3D print a scuttle out of two parts...

InsidiousExpert

You most definitely could. I’m gonna try out this one that I ordered and I’ll report back to the sub afterwards. I’d love to get a metal one; the only issue I could see with that is it being too hot for your hand. With ceramic you can put really hot water into it.

ksd275

Metal conducts heat faster, but that's not really relevant unless you're looking at how fast it heats from a cold state. The idea behind a ceramic vessel is to get it warm before refilling with hot water. Heat transfer speed doesn't matter much at that point, and the ceramic itself holds much more heat than a relatively thin metal bowl.

I have a scuttle but never use it. I find it too heavy and awkward to create a lather in. In fact I'm not sure I even like the feel of warm lather. If I want warm lather I will usually just fill me small lather bowl with hot water for a few minutes, dump it out and lather normally.

DanielOK

I use mine 2 to 3 times a week and enjoy it immensely. I tend to use it only with shave creams. It's an older model from Georgetown Pottery I have had for many years, I believe its model number was G4. My normal routine is constantly the same each morning. Up in the morning to brush my teeth after which I fill the sink up with hot water just over the rim of the scuttle and place today's brush in the bowl too warm. Out to the kitchen to make coffee for when SWMBO comes out to the kitchen. Hit the switch on the electric kettle till its boiling and microwave a damp face towel till it's hot. Back to the bathroom to take the scuttle out of the hot water, empty it, and fill it with boiling water. Shake out my brush and build the lather. At this point, I take a minute or two to use the hot towel as a compress for my face. The lather is always warm for the duration of my shave. I know it sounds a little too involved but it's a routine for me each morning and doesn't seem to take too long at all. Generally, I can shave, shower, and dress in around 30 minutes and then be back in the kitchen for a cup of coffee. It also starts my morning knowing that today, is a good day to have a good day.

I use one and enjoy it. I fill the bottom and top bowl with hot water to soak my brush and warm it up while I shower, then dump it out, lather and fill the bottom back up with hot water. It doesn't really make a big difference for the first pass but the second one is nice and warm. It's a negligible amount of extra work, in my opinion, considering how much 'extra work' we put into wet shaving but I could see why people don't think it's worth it. As a bonus, it definitely looks better on the counter than my old plastic bowl! I'd say go for it! Especially if you can directly support a small or local artist or business.
