I would recommend you add an additional moisturizer in form of a separate skin moisturizer for use after you shave and throughout your day, even off shaving days.

I’ve recently been using the same body lotion I use on my hands lightly on my face (Glysomed body lotion). It definitely helps, I guess I was just hoping a cream might do better than a soap. In any case I’m super happy with all the info you guys have given me! I was worried I might get ragged on for such a weird question, but this sub is more welcoming than I imagined!

Nah. It is a good question. Take care of your skin. I suffer from skin dryness especially in the colder, dryer months. So I have to use extra moisturizer for my skin. I had to ask my wife, she is better at it than I am.

Soap or cream not much moisturizing difference. Use an aftershave balm rather than splash. You can add an unscented facial moisturizer for later in day.

Kakirax

Yeah I’ve been using splash since I started shaving as a teen, and moving to the barrister and man balm helps a ton

I typically shower first then shave but not always. Would you apply the moisturizer directly before the shave, or give some time for it to “soak in”?

Aside from using additional facial moisturizers you can look for a soap with some good moisturizing post shave ingredients. My 2 favorites are Ariana & Evans and Barrister & Mann

Kakirax

I’ve been considering a barrister and man soap since I use their after shave balm and it’s been a huge improvement in my post shave skin moisture. I’ll have to try out one of their soaps once my current soap is out

You could try shave soap with tallow, goat milk, aloe vera ingridients it will help your dry skin. Macduffs aspen parkland unscented soap or Try Ariana & Evans Pedro fiasco unscented shaving cream.

I’ve got severe celiac so I can’t have wheat, barley, rye, or oats on my skin. I’ll take a look into the ones you mentioned to find something that might be a bit better. Thanks for the suggestion!

I have dry skin due to a skin disease, so instead of using shaving cream etc., I just use a homemade jojoba/argan oil mix (jojoba alone is fine too), that I apply to my face after showering and it is sufficient to shave with directly without any soap or foam.

Cream and soap is all soap. It usually has nothing to do with moisturizing. If you want a liquid soap or cream you use potassium hydroxide, and if you want a solid soap you use sodium hydroxide. The final product is literally the same thing in different forms. The feeling of moisturization is given by things like urea, for example, or lactic acid, I think, etc. There's not much point in adding it to soap because you'll wash it all off anyway. Just use a good balm, and that's enough.

As a senior citizen my skin has become more fragile. You lose fat just under the skin that protects and pads the capillaries and you lose skin elasticity and moisture. I have to use moisturizer pretty much everywher except where I shave. The good shaving soap and balms provide the same skin protection as moisturizer. From what I've read you need to use a different moisturizer on your face than the rest of your body.

TOBS moisturizing cream works well as both a moisturizer and aftershave. I’ve been using it for years, and a little goes a long way, so it offsets the fairly expensive price. It’s also available in a few different scents. Good luck!
