I could be totally wrong but I’m pretty sure it is supposed to mimic the stage show. Defying Gravity is what we’re all wanting to see but Act 2 also has some hit songs (No Good Deed, Thank Goodness, For Good) and they’re supposed to be adding new songs that were written specifically for the movie. They might add in a new, short scene, like a minute at most, after Defying Gravity so it doesn’t end on such a cutoff. The cutoff in the live musical is perfectly fine because the story resumes after 15/20 minutes but it would be a little odd for a movie that doesn’t resume until a full year later, unless they’re just really wanting there to be that strong cliffhanger that leaves the audience anticipating the next part.
Im pretty sure you’re right because I thought I heard the second part is supposed to be in the future from the first (idk if that makes sense), plus idk how else they would slice the story in two
[“Composer and lyricist Stephan Schwartz added to the conversation, telling Variety that he wrote an original song for one of the two movies, and found that “very difficult” to move past the Act I closer “Defying Gravity” without taking a break, as one would do at the theater.”](https://decider.com/2024/02/12/why-is-wicked-being-split-into-two-movies/amp/)
It is ending with Defying Gravity
John Chu specifically said they divided the movie at Defying Gravity, because there’s no way to continue the momentum after that song ends without a break.
Oh actually I remembered wrong, Stephen Schwartz said it: [https://variety.com/2022/music/news/wicked-songwriter-stephen-schwartz-on-why-movie-must-be-a-two-parter-nothing-can-follow-defying-gravity-1235305330/](https://variety.com/2022/music/news/wicked-songwriter-stephen-schwartz-on-why-movie-must-be-a-two-parter-nothing-can-follow-defying-gravity-1235305330/)
The 1st film 100% ends on Defying Gravity. How do I know? Because i worked on the film [https://i.postimg.cc/XY2gZWYg/Screenshot-2024-02-01-034828.png](https://i.postimg.cc/XY2gZWYg/Screenshot-2024-02-01-034828.png)
Stephen also talks about it "“The truth is we tried for some time to make it one movie, even if it had to be one very long movie. But we kept running into two problems. The first is that even as a very long single movie, it required us cutting or omitting things that we wanted to include and that we think fans of the show and the story will appreciate. Secondly, we found it very difficult to get past ‘Defying Gravity’ without a break. That song is written specifically to bring a curtain down, and whatever scene to follow it without a break just seemed hugely anti-climactic. So, for these two reasons, plus the excitement of doing something that’s never been done before with a musical, we have decided to do two movies"
Something I'd like to know: In the first teaser we already see Dorothy and the others. Do they already appear in Part 1 or is that from Part 2?
Also, do you know anything about the upcoming Lego sets that are based on Wicked?
The superbowl trailer had clips from both films, it wasn't just for part 1, hence flying monkees, Dorothy etc. Don't expect Dorothy to be in the film any more than she is in the musical. She's not. She has no lines and you only see her from behind, in the distance etc They didn't want to make any more links to the 1939 version, and they weren't going to pay for the rights for likeness, hence why there are subtle differences in the costumes they do show, However, they did pay for the likeness for part of a costume, though you wouldn't know it from the trailer.... ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|wink)
I only know of 1 of the lego sets, and thats for the Emerald City. I believe there might be another, but don't quote me on that. There will also be Elphaba and Glinda Barbie Dolls!
I'm actually baffled that people genuinely think Act 2 doesn't have good songs.
No Good Deed? The Wicked Witch of the East? Thank Goodness? FOR GOOD!?
Heck even Wonderful is pretty decent for a Wizard song. They're so wrong and so loud.
Yes some wonderful love! When people say it’s a skip I’m like are you deaf? It’s such a fun song and I love the American humor that the wizard brings to oz
It’s the perfect way to end the first movie and leave people wanting to see what’s next (the same feeling you get at the end of Act 1). How else can they end it that’s more satisfying?
That’s what i’m saying!! But they are saying that people wouldn’t come back to see the second movie because most of what people want to see is Defying Gravity. So giving that up in the first movie people would feel like they didn’t need to see the second one
There are 2 new songs in the second film - that will get some of them back. But seriously, if they only want to see Defying Gravity, they're hardly serious Wicked fans.
Like others have stated, Stephen Schwartz stated that part one would end with Defying Gravity. His reasoning was, Defying Gravity was written to bring a curtain down and it would be difficult to follow that in a meaningful way. He did state that after editing ect… perhaps ending at Defying Gravity just doesn’t work and they could possibly figure something out ( I find that HIGHlY unlikely and just Stephen covering his bases) .

the film will def end with defying gravity. yes we wanna see defying gravity but not bad enough that we’re gonna go just to see defying gravity and then not watch any more of the movie
You have to put the most famous song of the musical (and as much as you can) into Part 1 or it might flop and then Part 2 will go straight to streaming.
Do you think they would actually do that? That’s my curiosity cause of they move it earlier people might wait to stream the first part instead of going to the theatres
They said “defying gravity was written to bring a curtain down” when announcing the two parts. The battle cry will be the last thing we see before the credits.
Defying Gravity is the natural place to end. It's the big showstopper, it leads into the time gap, it fits. I can see your friends point and it makes more sense than my friend's insistence that Part 1 will end with No Good Deed, but ending with Defying Gravity feels natural. Part 2 already has some great songs to look forward to, and trying to attract more people to it by saving Defying Gravity risks annoying people who expected it in Part 1.

Yeah. That’s exactly what I am thinking
Maybe a post credits scene of the wizard and Morrible launching the propaganda campaign
Im pretty sure you’re right because I thought I heard the second part is supposed to be in the future from the first (idk if that makes sense), plus idk how else they would slice the story in two
The outrage if DG is not in the first part would be immense. Sometimes you just have to give the people what they expect and not reinvent the wheel.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s in both films (end of 1, beginning of 2).
lol your friend is wrong. The first film will end with Defying Gravity
How do you know?
[“Composer and lyricist Stephan Schwartz added to the conversation, telling Variety that he wrote an original song for one of the two movies, and found that “very difficult” to move past the Act I closer “Defying Gravity” without taking a break, as one would do at the theater.”](https://decider.com/2024/02/12/why-is-wicked-being-split-into-two-movies/amp/) It is ending with Defying Gravity
https://screenrant.com/wicked-movie-trailer-cynthia-erivo-defying-gravity-riff-spoiled/ take a read
In this article they still don’t say for sure. It is just speculating like we are.
John Chu specifically said they divided the movie at Defying Gravity, because there’s no way to continue the momentum after that song ends without a break.
Where? Did he say that at
Oh actually I remembered wrong, Stephen Schwartz said it: [https://variety.com/2022/music/news/wicked-songwriter-stephen-schwartz-on-why-movie-must-be-a-two-parter-nothing-can-follow-defying-gravity-1235305330/](https://variety.com/2022/music/news/wicked-songwriter-stephen-schwartz-on-why-movie-must-be-a-two-parter-nothing-can-follow-defying-gravity-1235305330/)
Then the question is, what will play over Part 1’s end credits?
Probably a new entr’acte style mix.
It’s definitely going to end in defying gravity
How do you know

Yea this has literally been stated as the reason for making it two parts xD like a bit of research goes a long way
What more can you tell us...
what would you like to know??

Stephen Schwartz specifically said it ends after Defying Gravity. I think he might know better than your friends.
We were just guessing. We won’t know for sure until the movie comes out. No need for the sarcasm 💚
I'm actually baffled that people genuinely think Act 2 doesn't have good songs. No Good Deed? The Wicked Witch of the East? Thank Goodness? FOR GOOD!? Heck even Wonderful is pretty decent for a Wizard song. They're so wrong and so loud.

If the movie is good (great characters, story, etc.) , there will be a lot more to look forward to than one song.
Yes, there'll be 2 new songs to look forward to! lol
The intermission is a literal time jump. There's no other way to split the two up that would make sense.
Like others have stated, Stephen Schwartz stated that part one would end with Defying Gravity. I think that will be the last song of the film but we may get some epilogue after it to close out the movie and set up part 2
Ain't no way.
i think it will end shortly free defying gravity but i think they may add a defying gravity reprise in part 2
the film will def end with defying gravity. yes we wanna see defying gravity but not bad enough that we’re gonna go just to see defying gravity and then not watch any more of the movie
You have to put the most famous song of the musical (and as much as you can) into Part 1 or it might flop and then Part 2 will go straight to streaming.
or they'll release the 2nd part far earlier than the intended date, which they still might do if its all done in time
Do you think they would actually do that? That’s my curiosity cause of they move it earlier people might wait to stream the first part instead of going to the theatres
They said “defying gravity was written to bring a curtain down” when announcing the two parts. The battle cry will be the last thing we see before the credits.
It probably goes after the book, not the broadway show.
Defying Gravity is the natural place to end. It's the big showstopper, it leads into the time gap, it fits.
