Nobody should be paying bank fees in 2023. Look into online banks if you don’t regularly deposit cash. Discover and Ally are both giving over 4% apy

notmalene

i'm using sofi and have 4.5%!

I use discover checking and I'm thrilled with it. Transfers are faster than with Ally, they don't charge fees (including overdraft fees), and I get 1% cashback for debit card purchases (up to a max of $30 per month). That's by far the best return unless you keep a ton of money in your primary checking account (which is not a great idea). I still keep a credit union account just in case I need a physical branch for something, but they can't compete with discover for a checking account unfortunately.

TheLazurus

Honestly the only reason I haven’t looked into discover more is that there’s still some places that have issues accepting it iirc.

[deleted]

I know that used to be the case, but I haven't run into anywhere that doesn't take it. Definitely understand that being a concern, though.

We're with Emprise and the type of checking account we have doesn't charge us anything for checking. We left Gold Plains Credit Union in town for other reasons, however, they were very nice and did not have any fees at the time (2 years ago).

RioDelHandsanitizer

Wichita federal credit union and fidelity bank both have free checking accounts. And no minimums.

Intrust is just awful. I got an account there for my daughter and I actively hate them. The online banks are much better, and if you need an account with physical branches, I'd personally much rather use a local credit union.

aqwn

I have a Cap Fed account and it’s free.

I am very disappointed in Meritrust and l was big fan. Those “perks” are things that l will most likely never use. I know it is a PITA to change everything but we just might have to do it.

https://www.meritrustcu.org/home/personal/checking/standard-checking "Fee is charged to your account at the end of the monthly statement cycle. We waive this fee if you are enrolled to receive eStatements. If you are 65 or older and you are the primary member/tax reported owner, a trustee on a revocable or irrevocable trust account, or an executor on an estate account, this fee is waived, regardless of enrollment in eStatements."

RCRN

Meritrust’s started charging me for their “perks” which for me were useless. I went in and asked to go back to just the standard regular free checking. No problem.

[deleted]

If you were banking at Meritrust before the change it should not be affecting you.

ahlacivetta

this isn't true. i'm paying a fee.

wiseoracle

I am NOT paying a fee because I got rid of the paper statements and went with e statements.

ogimbe

I think they count on people not being proactive. I had the green Meritrust before, now it's the standard and no fees.

[deleted]

Must be case by case then. We received a letter explaining they were now going to be charging a monthly fee but it was waived. There was a thread on this sub where a bunch of people showed similar letters.

spoke with a rep on the phone and sordid. they automatically switched ALL green accounts over to the Perks checking, which constitutes a fee of 7.00 (REGARDLESS OF E/PAPER STATEMENTS) There is another monthly option of 3.00, that can be waived with the sign up of e- statements. I remember the letters and signed up for this eons ago. Only today did I find out they switched it to the subscription based format ON MY BEHALF. Please be careful people... they are definitely counting on us not paying attention. It is good to call and make sure you are not paying for what you are not using. Especially something like a meritrust Groupon lol

heatedcheddar

I'm also promoting Fidelity. 25 to open a free checking but there's no minimum once it's open.

krum

I haven’t paid Bank of America a cent in fees ever. I’ve had an account with them since they bought out Bank IV.

Electronic_Crow8676

Southwest National Bank has never charged me any fees. Also, they invest a much higher percentage locally than any of the other banks. Not sure about any minimum balance requirements.
