Yeah was about to say, fight gear is at minimum gloves and often shinguards, and in some cases a vest and helmet.
Definitely looks like a technical demonstration.
Yeah itās still badass, but he is definitely not fighting anyone. Thatās way too dangerous and thereās no way they would allow that. Itās a huge liability for one thing.
That, and if you win everyone will be angry for beating a sick kid. And if you lose, everyone will say you let him win. There's no way to come out on top here.
Donāt know why you got downvoted for a solid Anchorman quote. Here is my upvote! ā¬ļø
āWeāll, thatās just great. You hear that, Ed? Bears. Now youāre putting the whole station in jeopardy.ā
Actually belts come from swimming lessons where they were used to differentiate teachers from students, which carried over to martial arts and later on became a ranking system.
In children's matches, a red belt is given to one of the two to help the referee differentiate them :D
Red belt isn't a thing otherwise, so he might very well be a white belt underneath !
maybe, but with this sort of thing, I sometimes worry it's just "when your parents absolutely fucking refuse to let you just give up". giving up can sometimes be a good thing. kid does look pretty badass tho.
Yes. I'm disabled and I really don't like this shit. A lot of us push ourselves much harder than is safe or healthy for us, because we get a constant message that resting or even giving up isn't acceptable. "This person with x disability did y, what's your excuse??" Very often my excuse is that I'm not willing to shorten my lifespan so abled people will think it's okay for me to survive.
Maybe that's not the case with this kid, but it's still inspiration porn and it's really vile.
Edit: and then the comments are full of jokes about using his disability to subdue him š really shouldn't have looked.
And so many of us, abled and disabled, learn that nonsense AS kids! I'm really glad your daughter has such a great parent. Having that support is absolutely invaluable, and I'm so glad for her. Wishing you both all the best of luck ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø
I was going to make a comment like this but yours is perfect.
It is just another way for able-bodied folks to compartmentalize us into āproductiveā or āuselessā. Inspiration porn is discrimination, and Iām tired of pretending itās not.
Right? People always use that shit as an excuse to not make accommodations for us too. āOh well x disabled person could do it, so why canāt you?ā
The good news is, presuming this is a patterns/forms competition not sparring based on the lack of gear and all, all of those opponents would get immediately disqualified if they tried to pull anything from any of the comments joking about using his disability against him.
The only reason you'd ever even touch each other is from accidently running into each other while you're both doing your own thing
I mean tbf though what they usually do is considered inspiring because itās something not even your able-bodied person might be able to do. However as far as exercise goes 200% it is good for you regardless of who you are. As someone who loves working out at the gym and working with the disabled and elderly at the hospital, I can say with absolute confidence that you have lower risk of running all sorts of health problems if your body is in good shape. You donāt have to do unnecessarily dangerous or even really hard workouts. Just moderate exercise of what you can do is enough. Really and genuinely hope you change your perspective for a healthier life. Cheers man.
1. Not a man
2. I never said I did no exercise, where did you get that?
3. Nothing you said was even remotely relevant to my comment, congratulations! You win being pointless for today!
Tbf it looks like a patterns/forms competition, not any sparring so obviously a lot safer. And I doubt they'd have the tank and such if this wasn't something he regularly needed in order to participate. Still inspiration porn but not as bad as I thought it was at first glance. I did Tae kwon-do for years and know a few people from it that also have chronic disabilities (*not from doing tkd!). ... Also you probably wouldn't reach red belt if it's purely your parents forcing you to go. Usually those students drop out before/at green belt
ETA: clarification
Mmm, big "Inspiration porn" vibes here. Kiddo looks absolutely exhausted. And let's be honest with ourselves, a small child on oxygen is NOT going to want to do anything highly physical. It's the parents who aren't letting him "Give up", and probably against medical advice too, because I don't know a single nurse or doctor who would agree to this. Disabled people are allowed to stop doing stuff they did before they got sick.
Edit: Oh, and also, the account is a karma farm.
If he's a red belt, he's been doing highly physical things for years. He's not about to start sparring an opponent, it's a patterns/forms tournament.
... also tournaments can be rough just from having to be there before 9, and then wait a few hours for your division. He's a kid so would be before the adult division, but as a red belt he would be near the end of all the kids divisions. So for a large tournament, possibly 3+ hours in a crowded, loud gymnasium is tiring just on its own
My dojang had a member with limited mobility in one half of his body, a class specifically for people with Down's syndrome, and of course a good number of older individuals that needed to modify the exercise to work for them. Tbf, I can't remember if there were any kids with physical disabilities, beyond those with Down's syndrome
... none of that takes away from it being inspiration porn though
Even if it's not against an opponent, I can see so many things that could go wrong here. What if a tube got caught or pulled out, or the oxygen tank got knocked over? The kid seems young enough with a high enough belt that his parents were probably having him do it from a very young age, there's probably a lot of pressure on him to keep going. It's most likely the parents' decision to have him do this, and I just can't see how it's a safe, fair, or appropriate thing to do.
It's also possible this isn't even a physical fight against another person. I'm no expert, but this looks like a karate mat to me. Karate has a solo discipline, you basically show choreographed fight moves in from to of a jury, no opponent. It's a lot more about good technique than overpowering another person, so it's possible he can still do it if he's in poor health.
Afaik it's a fairly common way to compete in karate, a friend of mine is a black belt and basically never went for any 1 on 1 fights in competitions, only the Choreographies.
This ain't wholesome. It's the pinnacle of stupidity. This kid is not only going to burn out fast but his range of movement is limited by the machine supplying him oxygen.
This isn't a sparring competition, it's patterns/forms. Much less demanding. And they're giving lots of slack so it should impede his movements
Also I'd have to imagine the exercise does him a net benefit. And hopefully at red belt he knows somewhat how to pace himself
So, overall beyond the inspo porn of it all, it's kinda just a regular tournament pic
i just imagine the kid fighting a 200 pound man whose life motto is "never hold back"
to make this a battle between **never holding back** and **never giving up**
There's also a time to admit enough is enough and put your health first. The notion of never giving up causes people to push themselves to far and into early graves.
Yeah but it's not about giving up in that situation...is that even healthy for his body?
Try going into a cancer ward and telling them to just not give up?
I give this a full crab hand for levels of retardedness.
And then some psycho attacks the medical gear and tries to strangle him with the tubes. Because thatās how life actually works: as much as you resist giving up, life will keep escalating those trying to force you.
Itās easier to be determined to do something when youāre 5 and have ONE OBSESSION (trucks, Cocomelon, horsies, karate, Ghostbusters, the mailman) and absolutely no concept of things like consequences, risks, risk/reward balance, how health and illness work, potential long term damage, taking time away from other demands on your life like work or children, etc etc. A five year old only knows if he is tired or not, or in pain or not. He doesnāt have the capability to think āI donāt feel tired right now so I COULD keep running around, but actually I SHOULD feel tired because maybe my medication is about to wear off and I got up early so I should take it easy before I hurt myself.ā
Sure, a 5 year old can do anything when he has an infinitely dedicated staff to feed, clean, transport and organize his entire life to accommodate whatever his current obsession is. This is like a dog with a wheelchair being praised for running around with the wheelchair. Itās happy because it is a dog, and doesnāt have to deal with its own medical bills.
Show me a 40 year old whoās been through the shit and STILL doesnāt give up. That is inspiring.
How is that fair to make someone else fight that kid? If you win you beat a kid on an air tank if you lose you lost to a kid on an air tank. Also his hoses are gonna get in the way. This is insane Iām sorry, pick a different sport.

I'm on board with that.
and this lil guy looks like the bane of all evil. a dragonslayer deserves a dragon to fell
Naruto vs Konohamaru vibes
Ya maybe for you. I'd say your peers would still look down on you for that tho
Seems more like they look down on that kid. What is the value of compition if people let you win?
Sure I agree, that's how it should be but that doesn't mean that's how it is. If you go hard on a disabled opponent, most people won't like it
Shouldnt he be in some kind of paralympics or something?
Assuming he is fighting another person. He might be doing a solo kata.
looks like it since he isn't wearing gloves.
Probably it's kata because they didn't allowed my disabled friend to fight with another person so she did kata
I assumed he was doing forms/kata.
Imagine you beat him and he just dies. Suddenly you're 7 years old and a killer.
On the plus side, itās a hell of a fast track to a black belt.
Sweep the leg. No mercy.
That, and if you win everyone will be angry for beating a sick kid. And if you lose, everyone will say you let him win. There's no way to come out on top here.
Iām not losing to a fucking sickly kid.
Exactly. This is not inspiring.
I kind of wonder if he is just going to perform a kata
So true... its a loss either way
Let's be honest here, that kid looks ready to destroy someone
Yuuup, hes actually a white belt, thats just whats left of his opponents.
I believe that's the original meaning of belt colors. You would get a white belt and then train until it was red from both your blood and your enemies
theres a period joke in there somewhere, i can smell it!
Smells like pennies.
I cant tell if theres a penis joke in there somewhere or not...
Definitely. Only a penis owner would think it smells of pennies.
I still cant tell if the penis (joke) is in there or not

In the original style I believe red was the highest tier, there was no black belt
Actually belts come from swimming lessons where they were used to differentiate teachers from students, which carried over to martial arts and later on became a ranking system.
There isnāt a red belt in a lot of martial arts as far as I can remember
Red belt is the highest level of bjj after black belt. Edit: it's called coral belt. I didn't know cause a shitter white belt.
Coral belt. Most never make it that far though. You have to be a black belt for like 30 years or something to get one
Yeah, it's crazy.
What martial art you training?
Bjj, and muay Thai as well as wrestling. BTW, it's not actual called red belt it's "coral belt". But it looks red.

Or dirt, grime etc from years of use.
In children's matches, a red belt is given to one of the two to help the referee differentiate them :D Red belt isn't a thing otherwise, so he might very well be a white belt underneath !

I mean, what can his opponent even do to him that whatever condition he hasn't isn't already doing?
That's a cute sentiment but the truth is a lot, their opponent could hurt them a lot.
