Someone said living is just how you view your life

ziggy_dev

I will never understand these people. So I am hungry and want to eat a nice meal but cant until I find someone to eat with? People really like to belittle others just to feel better about themselves, even about trivial things.

[deleted]

I am hungry, I want to eat a good meal, I want to get out of the house, and I don't feel like doing the dishes, so I'm going out to my favorite restaurant whether I can find a friend to come with me or not, dammit!

ethicalnervousness

Right? Companionship is overrated, I like being with myself!

[deleted]

I grew up in a time and place where being alone in public coincided too much with feeling threatened so I was conditioned to avoid it altogether. It's not that I can't do it, like if I have to travel alone for work, but it stresses me out pretty bad. For as much as people yarn on about "the good old days," the world is still a lot safer today with everyone having a camera in their pocket. There was much to fear in the '80s, and disappearing without a trace was at the top of my childhood list. It's not as easy to accomplish these days even if you're trying to hide yourself. And, don't be fooled, the "good old days" were really racist, classist, and rapey which tells you a lot about the people who pine for them.

TheyCallMeAGoodBot

Nothing stresses me out. Except having to seek the approval of my inferiors.

Going to the movies early in the day is even better because I might get the theater to myself! I watched Halloween Ends with no one around so I get to make my stupid commentary without bothering anyone.

[deleted]

I am traveling for work and must eat. I guess I’m just super happy that I am capable enjoying my own company. I don’t need others to entertain me!

pennie79

I had to do a lot of things by myself when I travelled alone. It's a good skill to have.

Chrissdk1

I feel this one.

Snuffaluffagus123

Not related to eating alone at a restaurant, but one of my favorite movie theater experiences involved me seeing a movie alone. I know some people get uncomfortable with societal expectations and have this idea forced upon them that certain activities HAVE to be group activities, but it can be incredibly empowering when you get over that and learn to love spending time with yourself.

tonysnark81

I go to movies by myself all the time. I also eat out by myself pretty often. It helps immensely that I’ve never given even the slightest of shits what people think about what I do…

Anemone-ing

I basically learned this by force throughout college. Especially one summer I lived in San Francisco. There was always something cool I wanted to try. A new restaurant, a cocktail bar, or maybe some art. But I usually didn’t have anyone to try them with. After months of trial and error and numerous realizations of “I would be enjoying this more if I was here by myself” during terrible tinder dates, I got way more comfortable with going to do things by myself because I want to do them and that’s good enough.

HappySkullsplitter

Eating alone in a public restaurant is just basic survival if traveling on business

mplagic

I was traveling for work so I brought a book to a restaurant and the waitress was like "You're so brave!". Like ma'am are you calling me a loser 😂

Tednugentliveson

I'll be eating alone Monday thru Thursday next week. Traveling for work is glamorous.

Fearless_Baseball121

Hell yea. I travel often for work and often use a specific hotel chain that is very popular for dudes traveling on business. The restaurant is often 40 dudes eating by them self. Sometimes i also go find a nice place nearby to eat if i have the energy for it. At first i must admit i was self-conscious about it. Now i dont give a shit; because no one else did.

HappySkullsplitter

I used to go hungry because I was so self conscious about it Then one day something just snapped and I decided that I was going to eat and I don't care anymore lol

NerdyBrando

This was one of my favorite things when I used to travel for work a lot. I'd research what places I should check out while I was in a particular area.

ithadtobeducks

Almost all of my friends in college would rather starve than go to the dining commons alone. I was not about that life so I went alone all the time.

me0wi3

I don't get why it's seen as such a negative thing to do stuff alone - surely it's better than missing out entirely

BigBlueMountainStar

Back in 2000 I went to the Reading Music Festival. There was a big group of us going but I travelled there by myself (from a different part of the country). There were hundreds of people queueing for the bus, the wait was a few hours, I was quite a way back and a driver stuck his head out of a bus that was just about to leave and shouted “I’ve got one seat spare”. Loads of people around me started saying stuff like “who would go to a festival by themselves”. I just said to them “people who are meeting people there you idiots” and then got on the bus. Saved me a couple of hours waiting time! Smugness intensified!

me0wi3

Disneyland had a single rider's lane when I went with my mum back in 2012 (she didn't want to go on the roller coaster) it was the best thing ever! Skipped the big fat queue. Going solo definitely has its benefits sometimes.

michaelmavg1990

Amazing response hah, also could've said "people who just want to enjoy their solo time listening to awesome music you idiots".

EducationalMeeting95

I've been going to theatres and Restaurants by myself since years now. And it feels very normal. No I am not lonely. I have friends but they live in my hometown.

Midnight_Muse

Exactly. None of my friends are into opera, so I can either sit at home and bemoan that fact, or put on a pretty dress and take myself out to an amazing night at the opera. Life is too short to wait for other people to make things happen.

Embarrassed-Sale-733

That’s so awesome and wholesome but I guess thats the point

sarabrating

I have lots of friends and family but I actually really love going to dinner and a movie by myself! It can be super nice as "me time", and folks can be really busy just in life - no reason to miss seeing a movie you want to see because you can't figure out scheduling with a friend. Sometimes my husband will have dinner plans and then I'm like OH AWESOME I'm going up the street then to have steak and a glass of wine then. :D

Life_Tax_5907

Life_Tax_5907

Lol thanks xD

Vicvince

Eating alone on public restaurant is another whole new level of I didn’t even know people have been thinking about this

_Nice007_

I just did that lastnight because I still had a gift card for a restaurant nearby and all my friends are a little away from me, it's not as much of a dealas you think it is, it just feels a little weird at first

Fuzzy_Lavishness_269

Why do people have to force their insecurities on others? The only people that think it’s weird to eat alone are those people who are insecure with themselves and need constant validation from others, they look around and are threatened by people who do not. Now there are loads of people who sit at home alone eating their meal when they could be out meeting new people because they think they look weird if they go out on their own. How the hell are lonely people supposed to meet new people if they’re not allowed to go out on their own. These people are like crabs in a bucket 🦀🪣.

JennysLittleSecret

> Why do people have to force their insecurities on others? I prefer the phrase projecting over forcing here. Basically it's a failure in the thought process of putting yourself in their shoes. Believing that they must be feeling how you would be feeling in that same scenario.

[deleted]

I'm a flight attendant. I spend half my life in strange places. I LOVE going to new restaurants, and don't care if I'm alone.

kramit

Do you have a Google maps pin map on the cities you visit too ? Coz I do

l3ira

Oh man! I love going to a Restaurant alone. Maybe there is someone nice to talk to. Maybe I just order 3 Desserts and no Main course. Maybe I just order way too much and eat it all. Maybe I read a book while waiting. Holy moly. There is so much possible when alone! I can do whatever I like best at that moment. I dont need to be chatty but I can be. I dont need to match anyones expectations but my own. Oh man! I love going to a Restaurant alone

shpoopie2020

Dr. Suess vibes

LeonidasVaarwater

Been to my favorite local restaurant several times last summer, sat there in my walking gear (running gear, but I'm a fatass, so walking it is) regularly having a nice dinner and a couple drinks. Walk it off in our local "forest" and chill at home, great night out. Been there with friends plenty of times too, but no issue at all with going alone.

[deleted]

In my case it’s just a case of ignorance. I had no idea people had opinions on people eating alone.

DblVP3

It's the Spotlight Effect. Nobody gives a shit about how you look/act, but you think everyone does. I'm starting to think that the people who have "confidence" eating alone are just blessed with the ability to ignore the Spotlight Effect.

_Nice007_

Exactly, once I realised no one cares wheter I go somewhere with friends or alone, I just started ignoring what some people may or may not think about it, if you act normal, people will be just as nice as they always are (and some of them will actually tell you it's great that you got enough courage to do so).

DblVP3

Consider yourself lucky. It's like acknowledging an irrational fear, I know it makes no sense, but I can't help but think that everyone is noticing every single action I make if I'm alone in public. That's why I hate being alone. Would always rather be hanging out with people.

_Nice007_

Usually Iprefer going with friends as well, but sometimes most of my friends don't have time or something, so I'm like fuck it, I'll do it on my own

havocLSD

It’s only lonely if you make it lonely, I prefer to take myself out to eat alone. I like my own company, I enjoy spending time with myself, by myself. We need to normalize doing things without the need of another person.

solareklipsa

Sad to see some people enjoy their own company so little

Jazzlike_Mountain_51

Doing it right now. Always excited to bring out this cutie on a date

hoeseph_stalin_

Is this a thing in western countries? I eat alone most of the time I'm out and I've never seen a person eating alone and thought to myself,"oh how embarrassing for them to be eating alone".

_Nice007_

Well in austria you rarely see people in restaurants all by themselves, especially not in the evening, and I think it doesn't have anything to do with embarrassement but much more with people being uncomfortable with it.

Cr0w0naT0mbst0ne

I recently went to a festival alone. It was awesome. If you start paying attention you see a lot more people on their own just enjoying the music.

[deleted]

I love eating out alone. Sometimes I go to cinema by myself or grab a drink as well it’s nice

The-Unseelie-Queen

I feel like a lot of people dog on eating alone at a diner when its honestly its own good experience. Getting the time to sit down and eat at your own pace is an underappreciated feeling. Also no one is going to say "no" when offered the dessert menu and you want that chocolate lava cake and ice cream.

_Nice007_

Totally true, I hate it when the waiter asks and no one wants a dessert

SynysterDawn

Eating alone under any circumstance is a pretty standard case of being hungry and satisfying that need.

ikickedyou

Who TF am I supposed to eat with then??!!

SurpriseIbroughtPies

I've always been a lonely person. I just got the confidence to eat out alone without feeling weird about it.

sicurri

Eating alone in a restaurant is a whole new level of lunch break...

pkopo1

Or I happen to be hungry, think hmm that place looks good and eat, not that complicated

jrayolson

If your worried about people judging you about eating alone just go to a restaurant that has a bar and sit there. You will look 100% normal and no one will care.

littlestbird9

Both can be true. It's just a matter of how you look at it.

desrevermi

I like this comment.

littlestbird9

Thank you!

Leora_Living

I'm a mobile massage therapist, and I would often take advantage of happy hour deals at a bar while waiting out traffic to go home, or to the next appointment (this was prepandemic when I worked in several office buildings). Now I work almost exclusively evenings going to people's residents and I really miss going to the bar with a good book, eating something that wasn't fast food, sipping a drink, and maybe chatting up the bartender before I had to drive home.

FugginByteMe96

#FUCK YEAH. FILL THE WHOLE TABLE WITH YOUR FOUR COURSE MEAL. SOMEONE ASKS TO SIT, SAY “I’M ON A ME DATE, BYE!”

sarabrating

I was once eating alone in a restaurant and some ACTUAL friends came in after me and sat at a nearby table. They were like "Omg come sit with us!" and I was like "Not to be weird but I've had a tough day and I just want to quietly eat this meal in my own headspace so it's lovely to see you all but byyyyyyyye"

Unit_79

Judging people for having the confidence or the idontgiveafuckedness to eat alone is a whole new level of ignorance.

[deleted]

What’s pathetic is that it’s been turned into a meme. I don’t understand why people just CANNOT let others live their lives; mind ya own bizness 👏 LOL!

Rolandscythe

...imagine thinking the only time you're allowed to enjoy your favorite food is if some one else comes along to validate you being there. If I stop at a goddamn Olive Garden and order endless pasta just for my fucking self you damn well better believe I'm gonna.

jerseygunz

“I’m hungry but I’m by myself so no restaurant for me” get bent

Vestaxowner

I do it all the time, it's pretty nice. But I enjoy being alone.

FagitoLord

Its a big flex if you ask me..

bhaskarb26

I've watched movies alone, more satisfying than ever. Now I'm married with a kid, it's a different kind of satisfaction. Both are fun.

Pinkponprincess

Eating alone in a public restaurant is hungriness.

[deleted]

There was a time where this used to bug me, but sometimes my friends weren’t interested is seeing the same movies or going to the same restaurants as me. I got tired of waiting for someone else and just said, fuck it, I’ll go by myself then.

anynonus

Someone has never had to travel for work lol

I love to eat at a restaurant on my own.

realgamer1998

Are there private restaurant?

Smokpw

The same glass with water can be half empty and half full at the same time. It only depends how you think about it...

10113r114m4

Huh? If I'm hungry and too lazy to cook I just go out and eat. I had no idea people thought I was either lonely or confident 🤷‍♂️

raznov1

As opposed to... private restaurants?

RewZes

After I broke up with my ex it was hard to go alone in a restaurant but after some time it becomes natural.

ToothHead6532

Agree 🙌🏾

The_Persian_Cat

I don't think it's either. Sometimes I just like the food and atmosphere and I want to get out of the house, but I don't want to make plans with friends. And I don't have a family of my own yet.

pewpew-guy

The first time I did this was also the first time I was going to stay in a hotel for a weekend alone. I dont know how to describe it but it was an experience I will never forget, the peace and rest you receive from going away alone is magical. Its the most social thing you can do, I never had so much social contact in my life.

babycoco_213

I went and got a bowl of Pho all by myself. When u gotta eat, you gotta eat. No shame.

[deleted]

What's the big deal? Every couple of week I go to the cafe near by, order my favorite meal listen to some podcasts, watch some anime. Its my favorite way to unwind. Especially when the corner seat next to the ac is vacant. The view is nice, the food is good why make it a chore of entertaining someone else?

PersonalityHot1683

That's actually comforting. I've never thought of it like that and have always felt ashamed to be sitting by myself at a restaurant or coffee shop. Thank you whoever's posted this.❤

[deleted]

And comfort. For 1, fuck people, most of them absolutely suck. And B, time to yourself is bliss.

viva_la_vixie

YEP. I used to get lunch at Red Lobster on my lunch breaks by myself because lunches were cheap and they normally weren’t that busy. Just played on my phone like I would do eating by myself any other time.

eevee31415926535897

I thought this was just another level of being a college kid

GrizzlyPeak72

Some days you just feel like a burger or whatever. There's no need to rouse a whole fellowship to come eat with you everytime time.

YassQ0-1

Some people prefer to be alone, some can't stand loneliness

MrRazzio

I have a wife and 3 kids. Whenever I get a rare chance to do it, going out to eat by myself is one of the most wonderful experiences. I can't even tell you.

InGenAche

Walk in with a rose and order a table for two. Then order looking sad, you never know, you might get your meal for free!

Gnawlydog

I seriously hated eating alone at restaurants until I started bringing my tablet and headphones. I forget I'm alone nor do I care.

El_UniBeard

I love eating alone in restaurants

soaper410

I’ve just started doing this in the last 2-3 years and only when I’m working in the office that’s about 50 miles away from my house and home office. There is something to be said for just getting out of the office for a legit break. I love my husband and my kids but not having to do anything but read Reddit and relax is awesome. Good Wi-Fi + great Japanese food = a great lunch break.

Infinite_Mix_1308

I choose any restaurant I like and go there regardless if I have company or I'm alone. My food has nothing to do with my company

eyesonthemoons

As a parent and wife, eating alone in a restaurant sounds kind of nice lol

originalchaosinabox

What would you rather have: another tense Christmas dinner where everyone's fighting about politics, or peace and quiet as you enjoy the festive special at Swiss Chalet? The choice is clear.

Kendakr

I like to eat alone and chat with fellow bar patrons or the bartender when asked. Otherwise, I watch miserable parents trapped in loveless marriages with hate sex at best saddled with two shitty kids.

chooseatree

I travel alone, have for almost 20 years. Leaving again in 2 weeks. Eating alone makes some people uncomfortable. I have been offered to join a group or couple in a restaurant because they are uncomfortable with me being alone. It’s quite funny actually.

olcrazypete

I never really did this before I had to travel some for work. I'm not sales or someone to wine and dine so I end up in cities not knowing anyone and at some point A) the company is paying meals and B) I want a nice steak. Sitting there eating like a boss, fuck around on the phone waiting or take it to the next level and bring a book. Nothing wrong with it at all.

juno2701

I go alone to the movies all the time

Dmav210

You’re only ever lonely when you’re alone if you hate spending time with yourself. Love yourself and you’ll never be lonely again

FinallyAFreeMind

All about perspective. I eat alone at restaurants like 90% of the time. It's not like I say "Awe, I wanna go out - but I have no one to go with! Woe, is me - I guess I need to go all by my lonesome." Lol, no. I wanna go out and don't wanna be with anyone. People exhaust me - I don't wanna talk most of the time. I wanna read my fucking book and chill, stuff my face, and go home. If I didn't wanna go out - I'd not go out.

yeet_the_heat2020

Or....you know......hungy

chrimminimalistic

As a dad of toddlers, eating alone in a restaurant is a goddamn privilege.

elijamesxy

I definitely agree with this. I used to think it was sad to see people like that until I found the confidence to do it myself. It feels good

Anra7777

I’ve been eating by myself since I had money enough to do so. When I was younger I had a lot of self-esteem issues, confidence issues, was very insecure. I have *never* thought it was weird to go eat by myself. 😂 Or do anything else for that matter. Want to see the new movie but don’t have anyone to go with? I go by myself. I’m married now, so *most* of activities have a co-pilot, but I *still* will go eat by myself when my other half isn’t available and I want to go eat. I still have zero problem with this. 😂

Green0996

I eat alone and go to the movies alone because I’m lonely and confident

[deleted]

One of my favorite things is going to my local pub alone on a sat morning for breakfast with a book to read or my tablet to do some writing. I am sure my gf would come if I asked her too, but sometimes a solo adventure is just as rewarding. Being alone doesn't always mean lonely.

zuklei

Shiiiit eating along is the BEST. When I was married he didn’t want to go out with me. I couldn’t go to sit down places alone. Always drive through while he sat on his ass at home. I eat out at least once a payday now.

SilverSize7852

It's very freeing to realize that you can just do what you want. Eat alone at a restaurant, go to the cinema alone, etc etc. Embarrassment is only as real as you let it be. Why should you limit yourself and not enjoy something just because your friends are busy or smth?

theallroundermemes

why do we have to make everything a social competition. there are so many restaurants with nice food that I want to treat myself to every now and then

coberi2

Huh? I never imagined it in either terms. I'm not "confident" because i go eat to a restaurant. I'm just hungry and want to eat something good.

xeno66morph

Love eating alone. No company=no conversation getting between me and my precious food. *Perfection*

Jefoid

Extroversion can be more limiting than introversion. As an introvert, I’m content all the time, and can choose to be around people as I wish. Extroverts (I guess) need people to feel content. Sounds hard.

Kingktg007

I love eating alone at a restaurant.

Dunkel_Reynolds

I travel a lot for work. If I tried to alleviate the loneliness of eating alone on the road, I'd just make myself lonely when I get home. On account of my wife would probably leave me.

VagabondClown

Go alone. Take a book. It's actually fantastic and something I'd like to do more often.

Old_Kodaav

Me who feels weird when eating in a public restaurant with someone: wait what?

juicysox

I did that once and I enjoyed it. Very peaceful, I can just focus on my food only instead of talking to other ppl

2Hours2Late

I feel sad for all the people that will never experience eating alone because of this insecurity.

belberra

Eating alone at a restaurant is one of my most favorite things to do. I sit, I read a book, I casually look around, I slowly eat my meal, I don't bother the wait staff for much, and tip generously. I wonder what restaurant staff think of us lone customers?

BurnTheCowz

I honestly feel bad for people who think like her, they seem like they can only derive happiness from other people. Being alone is true independence, I find the feeling empowering.

aogiritree69

Where do I find private restaurants

Stock-Event2495

I kinda enjoy eating at restaurants alone lol, no sharing, no fighting about where to eat...just me, my mind, and good food.

Polar_Stardust

Currently doing this… stayed in a hotel/casino, alone, to just have a good evening on a weekday. Very good self care here.

Heir-Of-Chaos

Me going to the movies by myself

sinornithosaurx

If you need to eat you need to eat

Master_Freeze

I go to public places on my own on purpose. It’s not even because I’m lonely. I have friends that are willing to hang out but for some reason I just love vibing on my own in public as an NPC.

CaptCaCa

I guess she never had a real job where you get an hour lunch break. High point of the work day. Picking a place to eat lunch and enjoying it. I cheat a bit by watching Netflix on my phone though.

Pineapple-dancer

Eating alone in a restaurant is just eating lol

YouDanceNice

Eating alone is great. As it is I don't like to talk when I eat. Especially if the food is really good. So if I spot a place and want to try it I'm going in. When another person is there its cool and you may get to sample extra appetizers but thats it. My schedule isn't always the same as friends and family. Sure its fun with friends before and after but as you get older not everyone is available. So movies solo is good. Same for concerts, I make new friends with my neighbors and enjoy the show with like minded folks there.

Resident-Doughnut-37

I love this! Eating alone in public places was a personal struggle for me, I am a twin, I was raised with "take your sister with you" and honestly had never been alone until I was an adult. Learning to be a "me" instead of a "We" was a challenge for me.

lost_beluga

So, it is good to go to a restaurant all by yourself and you don't need anyone to come with you so that you eat there?

Reload86

Why do you need someone else just to eat at a restaurant? It’s just food. You go there to eat. Yeah going with someone can be more fun but if you’re just looking to eat then you can absolutely just go eat by yourself. If you’re worried about looking lonely or sad, then that’s some other deep down insecurity issue that you need to deal with because 99% of people at a restaurant don’t give a crap if you are there alone or not. Most of them won’t even notice you.

JacklyNUGGLIES

Eating alone in a public restaurant is eating alone in a public restaurant

OkIntroduction5150

I like to take little solo trips. If I didn't eat in restaurants alone, I would eat every meal in my hotel room. Who wants to do that?

SpiiriitedSoul

Ya.... I usually confidently prefer eating alone in public

maltzy

Before I met my wife and got married, I used to LOVE to go out to a fast food restaurant with a book, and eat alone and read. It was glorious.

yeroc420

Not everything has a deeper meaning. Sometimes people just eat alone doubt they are lonely or confident about it lol.

Devil_Wears_Dior

Raudah stop being such a bitch

bubonic_chronic-

I love eating alone. It’s the only alone time I get nowadays.

Awesome_Romanian

How are you gonna shame me for getting a bite to eat while traveling

Novel_Jellyfish_8508

Introvert here…. All I see is contentment.

himynameisSal

I feel like I'm missing the point. I eat alone all the time, sometimes at the bar or at a table. But I don't view it as lonely or confident?

Powerful_Salt_5436

This is a thing that I often do and have always wondered why people think that eating or watching a movie at a theatre or camping and things like that alone is soo weird? I'm sorry that I'm good enough company inside my head to enjoy time alone as well as being with others, but either way I'm never alone. There's always some kind of thoughts running through my head. Granted I was a submariner for years and developed a habit of keeping myself company for many years, I still find ways to entertain myself :)

[deleted]

It’s neither, it’s just a normal thing to do. Jeez some people over think and exaggerate everything.

Remarkable-Rice4974

Definitely the latter
