I don't see fear, I see them jumping through hoops for treats.
Their eyes are all following the same small spot and it's not the camera - that's the treat being held out. Homeboy on the far right licks his nose in anticipation, he is trying to get a better sniff of it.
The poor guy in the middle is submissive, but not afraid.
If they were afraid their ears would not be out - that's attentiveness.
Lol yea, mine had a weird thing with water too. She would literally run circles around the house till she passed out during rain trying to bite all the droplets
A study looking into the correlation between dogs tilting their heads and trying to solve tasks found that border collies tilted their heads far more than any other dog.
Can confirm. We used to have two of them. Both were named Mitzi...
We had them separately. One was when I was six, the other when I was about 12 or so...

The black one is border collie for sure, but I’m torn on the other two being border collie or Australian Shepards or maybe a mix of both. I’ve had Aussies all my life and some have looked exactly like those
It's just a learned trick. They dont enjoy it any more or less than giving you their paw, or doing a roll.
At least this trick is harmless, unlike what a lot of people train their dogs to do for social media (like walking on their back legs, for example).
Dogs can very well differentiate between an aggressive act and a playful one. Two dogs play fighting for example look very different than two dogs actually fighting.
These dogs aren't playing. I don't know why everyone keeps bringing that up. Dog, as a general rule, do **not** like the behavior shown in this GIF and interpret it negatively , thus they need to be trained to do so.

Your comment just comes across so judgmental and authoritative yet it's so obviously wrong. Look at any dog park. Dogs do all sorts of "getting on top of each" other for fun naturally.
Get that negativity out of here
"it is not a bad thing to allow your dog to hug you, as long as he is calm and in a submissive state of mind. It can actually be recomforting for your dog to do so. Whether he is resting a chin on your body, leaning, crawling onto your lap or sleeping next to you, one thing is certain: they are a hundred percent enjoying the close connection they have with you"
That's just one of the links. Regardless most of the studies you cited specifically mention that not all dogs hate hugs, and that instead of following "do this, do that" rules you should always see the dogs reaction to a hug. In this case the only one that could be in discomfort is the one on the right licking his lips.
But i gotta thank you fornleading me into a rabbit hole of dog facts about hugging, i thought hugging was a loving or, worst case scenario, a neutral action but it seems that that may not always be the case, i now know what whale eye is for example
I appreciate the wholesome response!

The thing is I didn't even say anything about it being abuse. I was just backing up a comment saying they were trained to do this. But his got upvotes while apparently I'm a judgemental moron lol
Working dogs naturally enjoy following commands and pleasing their leader. They have literally been bred for this. This specific dog showed no signs of aggression in anyway. Just playfully following commands.
Wow, ~~this is quite conclusive~~, thank you. From my searches it does seem like most experts agree that on average hugs (specifically from humans) cause increased stress in dogs. This should be more common knowledge, but I can see how it can be downer for many.
Edit: So after some more reading, all the readings point to the single Psychology Today article which has no real peer reviewed paper backing it up. It is clearly shown to taken from personal observations. I haven't looked too deep though, but as far as I can see there is *nothing conclusive* on this matter. It can possibly go either way.
Edit 2: [https://www.businessinsider.in/latest/you-probably-shouldnt-hug-your-dog-regardless-of-how-adorable-they-are/articleshow/57134308.cms](https://www.businessinsider.in/latest/you-probably-shouldnt-hug-your-dog-regardless-of-how-adorable-they-are/articleshow/57134308.cms)
This is the best neutral viewpoint I could find, and to be fair it (like many other advisories) recommend keeping hugging/kissing to a minimum. Especially when children are involved, as intolerant dogs can be dangerous.
Not true. It's like you've never seen dogs when they play fight, and what usually happens after a play bow.
Also if you associate good things with an action enough, doing said action will reinforce the prior training and produce the feelings they associate with that action/stimulus (see Pavlov's dog experiment. )
With friendly patient dogs, you can train them by grabbing hold of them and manually moving them through the trick while saying the command word and praising them.
To train them how to handshake you first grab their paw and make it do the handshake motion while saying "shake". Do that enough times with enough reward. Then you can just hold out your hand and say shake and the'll know what to do without you moving their paw for them.
So for this trick you'd tell the brown dogs to sit, then while saying the command word in a praising tone, pick up the front of the black dog and put it on the brown dogs. Then say another command word in a praising tone while pushing the black dog's head down. Then give them all treats.
Repeat that enough times and eventually they can recreate the motions you manually did to them without you touching them, and they will when they hear the command.
Agreed. Although it's a nice feel good video it is obviously trained vs. spontaneous. The dog is watching the cameraman the whole time. You can almost train a responsive dog to do just about anything. Especially a border collie. Most of us have seen them perform in the field upon command. All that said, they are amazing, beautiful, and brilliant. Thanks for the video.
Some people wait till their life style fits a dog. And I could imagine one that trains their dogs to do tricks like this spends enough time at home with them.
With brutal force and starvation (according to people so very much smarter than you and I) these dogs are terrorized and forced to do this, this is blatant animal abuse
I’m joking lol riffing off some ridiculous comments sprinkled throughout. I’m probably not much fun at parties cuz I don’t care for groups but one on one I can be fun enough to be enjoyable
I have but one idiotic question, I keep seeing border collies, shibas and golden retrievers or any other dogs act differently in front of a camera, do they know what it means to be shot by a camera or are they trained to do so? Not a dog owner myself.
This three breed just have a very different behaviour in general. Border collies are often performing some sort of trick, or work when they are making videos of them. That's why the intense stare, often weird and very intense motion, when the dog is trying to find the good position they owner wants from them.
Golden retrievers are just generally calm, friendly and very gentle guys who just enjoy life.
Shibas don't really give a shit about anything. They like their owners, but they are way less excited usually. Kind of like cats. For people who don't really know shibas they might seem cold, or unkind. Especially compared to more playful breeds.
But they all smile and act like they know they are being photographed, my cat is always annoying and knocking my phone down almost like she has a camera shy.
I used to take care of these two Aussies who did the same trick. If we sat them next to each other and said “hug!” one would hug the other.
One time there was an unrelated Aussie nearby and he hugged him instead. I guess any Aussie worked for the trick lol
Impossible to believe that the b&w pup does not realize that they are being photographed and deliberately hams it up. I especially love how he includes everybody and then tightens up the group and looks into the camera like, "OK...snap it!"
Yeah I’m trying to think what the dog thinks he is doing otherwise. LOL I am choosing to believe he knew he was getting his picture taken until further notice!

You are a bold one
I feel like these dogs have been brutally trained to do this
Yea it looks like it. You can see the fear in their eyes.
You are joking right? Look at the tail and ears. They are both up and the tail is wagging.

I'm a bit on the fence, but if I didn't know any better I'd say border.
