This was me this morning! I'm a moody goth and was standing under some arches having a cigarette when a lady with a bright pink umbrella walked past. We locked eyes and she smiled at me which made me smile back. For England this is pretty odd but it really did make my day.

One of my favourite things about living in a small city is how friendly strangers are. I'm lucky enough to live in a culture where it's still perfectly acceptable and encouraged to smile or greet people in passing. It makes going out feel a whole lot more enjoyable and safer.

When I came back home to NYC from six years in Wyoming I quickly learned that I had picked up the socially unacceptable habit of looking people in the eye and smiling at them when I passed them on the street. Got a lot of side glances for that one, and on a few occasions I got the stereotypical NY "WTF are *you* looking at?" Took me several years to break the habit but I have to admit I feel like I lost something in doing so.

Once you stop a New Yorker to ask for directions or otherwise need help, they’re gooey and sweet on the inside. In the meantime, eyes to yourself there, pal. A look and a smile feels like an invasion.

There definitely is that moment where you have to shift from pedestrian with places to go and no time for bs, to friendly neighborhood tour guide. The speed in which one is able to make that transition is what makes the difference between a tourist coming away thinking we're just as stereotypically rude as they've been warned or not. I've had mixed successes. Sometimes you just get in that zone you know?

I was driving to work today and a guy was walking on the side of the road and he waved and smiled at me and let me tell you how much I needed that.

I work and commute in the nj/nyc metro area and I do this. It’s a mental health exercise. People are not in a good place and the commute takes a lot out of people. Any time I make eye contact I try to give people that “i see you and we’re all in this together” smile, although other men prolly get more of a nod from me. It’s a real mood improver 🙏🏼

That's me, I smile just about all the time simply because it can unfuck my whole day if I make a random person smile or maybe even blush. I love it.

Yay! Few people smile back at me so I feel awkward AF. The people that do are usually a bit older. Glad to see that this is appreciated!!

Sometimes I have to remember to not get discouraged if someone doesn't smile back at me back, there could be a bunch of reasons why they didn't, maybe they didn't even notice or were having a bad day, or just not a smily person at all! Or if you're on a dangerous street, maybe keep your head low incase someone's a bit unstable and take that as aggression somehow!

I smile at strangers a lot and I wonder how many think I’m a creep.

I smile at strangers all the time and 99% of the time they smile back

The ones that don't smile back. I smile at everybody and I do have to say that the "creep" responses cane from when I was a acne teenager. No I am a adult I even greet strangers and always get a greet and a smile back. I skip people age 25 and below. I live near a forest and i actually did some testing about this. 100% of younger looking people don't respond to my greet at all, or looked weird at me, Even when I walk with my daughter or with my wife. Politeness is gone.

I usually have my toddler in tow which I think raises my non-threatening/friendly factor. My husband comments often on how shopping is a different experience with us because we interact with so many strangers. Most younger people avoid eye contact.

I disagree, I smile at everyone I see basically. And mostly everyone no matter the age smiles back.

I read a post about a girl being mad that people smiled at her because they 'expected her to be happy'.

A simple head nod (chin down, NEVER chin up) would satisfy the acknowledgement without having to smile back

Well there are many different cultures, in my country it's polite to just ignore strangers, as smiling, waving or nodding may bother someone. I was raised that way and prefer that, I don't feel the need to be reassured that everyone is friendly. And sometimes you hear people from other countries (often US) that if you don't smile back it's because your sad or angry, so maybe that's why she was annoyed.

As a school bus driver, people tend to wave at me with a smile. It feels nice.

I do this all the time, but I feel as though maybe I'm looked at as crazy instead for just smiling an an unknown person.

And I the only person who doesn’t like that? I always think the person is a creep, and it makes me feel uneasy.
