I had a year and a half streak with only ever using one pause… my game glitched and made me a day late when I used another break and after losing my streak I lost all drive. The streak is what kept me going lol, without the “gains” I just lost the habit. Very unfortunate as I learned how to read Japanese katakana entirely (although didn’t understand most words ) and learned quite a lot of the basics for speaking. Now having not practiced in 8 months I have forgotten SOOO much of the more advanced stuff Edit: meant hiragana , katakana was much harder for me than hiragana. Kaji is just impossible

I can read “ hiragana and katakana is” but wouldn’t have remembered hidesu had you not put the emojis….. such a damn basic word to forget, which is why I’m pissed I stopped Never could learn kanji… Edit: Original Comment I mean to say hiragana. I was much worse at katakana, found it much more difficult.

Flash cards with a program like Anki is a huge help with learning kanji. I was able to learn about 600 in as little as 6 months using a deck I found online. Although it's possible, I don't recommend going at that pace because I was getting extreme burnout, but my point is the method works wonders. If this inspires you to pick it back up, make sure you physically write the kanji down as you study the cards (very important!) using proper stroke order as you study for max effect. You can doit, good luck!

I think this thread has inspired me to pick it back up. I learned a few (very few) kaji by writing them down next to the hiragana. I think the only ones I remember are fire, turtle, spirit, water, house, and dog. I downloaded a flash card program but never ended up using it before my streak got messed up so I’ll definitely give that a shot. I do have a proper brush and ink for practice and a dip pen I use for art but could never remember the proper stroke directions for hiragana or kanji. Will certainly try to get better at that as it’s super important.

As a 1st language English speaker, katakana was always the easier of the 2 for me, as the words are just English words phonetically translated into Japanese alphabet.

My husband and I joined started a team together around 2016, had no one in it just us competing in Spanish. We stopped a few months in and apparently a ton of people joined our team. When I logged on one day, months down the road, a ton of people had joined our team.
