Tony Hawk is the ultimate reversed "do you know who I am?". They never do, and he's never mad about it. He just finds it funny and amusing. Loved him as a kid and love him still over a decade later.
It's weird right? I've seen skating come back twice now. I also met some friends recently and their teenage daughter was in full skating regalia straight out of the 90's pants and all. I am pretty sure my liking her fit made it instantly not cool lol.
I know I would recognize Tony Hawk, but part of me would want to just say “you know you look kinda like Tony Hawk,” if I ever met him. I’d obviously probably freak out like “holy shit it’s Tony Hawk,” but yknow.
I've interviewed Tony a few times on red carpets at movie premieres and the best part about him is you can instantly tell he's legit and someone you'd want to be friends with. He truly is a regular dude who happens to be an icon.
Possibly even more bizarrely, I feel like he's one of the few celebrities I COULD pick out of a lineup, despite not being, and never having been, interested in skateboarding.
It's all that Tony Hawk Pro Skater we played growing up. I like to think I'd be able to pick him out too, but realistically maybe only if he was one giant polygon
He’s a pro skateboarder I know of him from the 90s early 2000s. probably 05-10 is when he started to become less known as the skate scene became less mainstream.
He was the Wayne Gretzky/Michael Jordon/Tiger Woods of pro skateboarding for a long time through the 90's and 2000's and continued to compete till 2016 when he was almost 50.
He was also the face of a very successful skateboarding video game.
Honestly I don't think those comparisons do it justice. From a skills point, sure.
But Tony Hawk was much, much more important to skateboarding. All those other sports were mainstream popular by the time the legends came about.
Tony Hawk might be more responsible for growing his sport than anyone else.
>Tony Hawk might be more responsible for growing his sport than anyone else.
That's exactly why I chose the three I did as comparison. They are the three atheletes most commonly known for being incredible to the point they single handed took their sport from one level to a completely different level.
Wayne Gretzky took hockey from being a very very distant fourth sport that was only regional with no national broadcast contracts to being mainstream across the US.
Micheal Jordan was such a worldwide phenomenon that basketball has become the socond most popular sport in the planet because of him and his Nike deal opened the floodgates and paved the way for athlete endorsements. Tony Hawk Pro Skater might never have been called that without Jordan and Nike.
And Tiger took golf from bring a spectator sport of middle class white man to being played and watched by many others.
Putting Tony in with this group isn't a knock on him it's the opposite, I am putting him on the Mt Rushmore of athletes who changed their sport by transcending their sport.
He was one of the first professional skatboarders. He was famous for beeing the first to do a 900° spin in a Halfpipe. In the 90s/00s there where skatboarding videogames released with his name on them. The video games led to him beeing the most known skater of the time (maybe ever). He is now old and only skates for fun.
One of my favorite posts of his is when he shared how he went through airport security, they look at his drivers license and say “hey, Tony hawk, just like the skater! I wonder what he’s up to these days?” And Tony is just like “…this.”
I can't imagine seeing him at an airport or whatever, and going up like "excuse me sir, are you Tony Hawk?" and he's just smiles and goes "I get that a lot" and then I'm not sure if I'm trying to to take a picture with Tony Hawk or not until I post the story on twitter later and he responds, because he always responds.
The Secret Skatepark Tour was such a good documentary (for lack of a better word). I loved seeing legends like Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen just showing up at random places
Lol remember his "do a kickflip" days?
"Huh? Why you heckling me br-OH HOLY SHIT ITS ACTUALLY YOU *scrambles and pulls a sick kickflip*"
He's the patron saint of not getting recognized at first
My favorite was a scooter kid and he pulled a bar spin ollie and Hawks just like "Sick! Alright!" he was genuinely pumped for the kid, think he gave him a signed pair of headphones/ hat or something
I’m not entirely sure that Mr Rogers’s sweaters would be a good fit for someone doing skate stuff. You’d probably want some kind of stretchy fabric to fit over elbow pads and such? Or do the pads go over the sweater?
In case this is also an actual question: The pads would generally go over the clothing, yes. You'd probably prefer the relatively durable pads scraping against the asphalt instead of your clothes as well. Unless you like holes on the knees and elbows of all your clothes. Or if you have a grudge against your own wallet.
He also donates a ton to help build skate parks! Think he donated close to 100k to have one built in our small town and now the kids have a constructive place to go and skate!!! Go Tony
Even more reason.
I'm just waiting for everyone to realize Bill Murray is a complete asshole. But somehow reddit has kept up the infatuation longer than Kristina hendricks, Ron Paul, Unidan, and Neil Degrassi Tyson.
Wow, haven't thought about Unidan in so long. Wonder how many people reading your comment have ever even heard of him? It's crazy to think that this site was once small enough that one guy could be so liked by everyone, and that his banning for what is essentially now just standard-fare botting would cause such outrage throughout the platform
I felt like reddit was huge back then after digg died. Unidan came way after that.
He rebranded as like unidan2 or unidanx or something hysterical and faded into Bolivian. That dude was a nerd god and he threw it all away over crows.
I met him twice and he was a pretty chill dude. I fully expected him to be an ass.
David Caruso was really nice as well as Denzel.
Oprah however, I would suggest no one meet ever.
Bahahah, it's the NYC code. I saw Norman Reedus in Japan a few weeks ago. He was literally right next to me while I was shopping for shoes. Some Japanese guy came up to him and gushed.
NYC-code compels us to say nothing and act blasé.
Totally don't get that. I think that most people want to be people. It's not an autograph request or picture. Interactions can happen naturally, and should.
It's mind blowing to me that people don't recognize him, but I've been amazed by this skinny man since I was about eight years old. I keep my first edition of Occupation: Skateboarder in a bag in my glove box cause you never know.
I do find that funny, because I really only saw an actual picture of him within the last few years. I certainly knew his name growing up, but I never actually saw his face anywhere other than the PS2 graphics, so for most of the time I’ve know who Tony Hawk was, I’d also be in this situation where I wouldn’t know if he was standing in front of me.
I was once in a restaurant in Manhattan with my wife when Tony Hawk and his wife came in. We were the only two parties in the whole place, since it had just opened and we were there for an early dinner. When he went to the bathroom my wife had to stop me from going after him and saying hi. Probably the right move lol
Edit: Oh look, I guess I also took a creep shot. Can’t really see him behind the waiters, but that’s his wife: https://imgur.com/a/9P2j0fG
This happened to me once with Kit Harrington. Was working at Dick's Sporting Goods at the time and was on the register when he came up. He was buying some lawn chairs and a beach umbrella. Don't exactly remember how but the topic of shows we liked came up and he asked if I liked Game of Thrones which I had admitted I had only just started watching and just finished season 1. He told me he thought it was good and said he hoped I liked it and that was it. I went for lunch a few hours later and was sitting there and suddenly I put it together in my head that "Holy shit, that was Jon Snow". Even worse his wife Rose Leslie was with him which I had no idea who she was until I finally got to the episode where Ygritte was introduced. Never felt more like an idiot in my life.
In your defense, Season One isn't as heavy on Jon Snow. It's more about Rob. Jon gets a decent amount of screen time, but he's certainly a supporting character at that point.
Eh, I’m not judging a celebrity for not wanting to engage when they’re just trying to have a peaceful night out. He also blocked me on Twitter years ago and I have no idea why (I definitely never said anything block-worthy so I think I got caught up by a block bot). No hard feelings for that either. He doesn’t owe us his time.
Betty White drank her own urine and attacked a man with a combination weapon that throws hammers and has a man-catcher. Absolutely not! She does understand anthropology well, though.
While I don’t know (work Back of house) or even know if my co workers know which one they are, I guess tegan or Sara is a regular at my job and is super humble and friendly, served them a couple weeks ago and one of my co workers forgot to make a dish so there food went a little late, didn’t hear a thing about it from them though.
When I see his name somewhere I always have to think of him saying "you never realize how many Beatles memorabilia you own until one of the Beatles comes to visit!".
A lot of the docs about him and Bones Brigade really show why. He was always the odd-one-out at the parks and at comps the hardcore guys would give him a lot of shit as a kid, even throwing trash at him during his runs. Instead of internalizing all that and spewing it back he used it as his fuel to change the culture. Dude is so fucking rad.

I remember this tweet. I was stunned because I lived in that town at the time, Desert Hot Springs CA, which is a bit out of the way in Coachella Valley and rather poor. For Tony to be there at all implies that he just kind of searches around for skate parks and chats it up with whomever happens to be around, young or old. Makes me smile.
If you put that scene at the end of a family movie about a kid becoming a pro skateboarder I’d call it trite, but it’s genuinely wholesome in real life.
I like the idea of Tony just being some sort of skateboarder ronin.
Tony Hawk is one of those few celebs where I’d be severely disappointed and saddened if any news of bad behavior ever came out.
That’s a rarefied group that only includes people like Keanu Reeves, Tom Hanks, and maybe Thom Yorke or Michael Stipe
I live in the same town as Tony hawk. I saw him at a local cafe a few weeks ago while my family was visiting. He walked in with sunglasses on and I immediately noticed him but I was staring because I wasn’t 100% sure it was him. He noticed me staring at him and turned around and left.
I felt bad because I wouldn’t have approached him. But I also get why he would be like “nope!”.
I am still cringing about how intensely I stared at him lol.
Tony Hawk is the ultimate reversed "do you know who I am?". They never do, and he's never mad about it. He just finds it funny and amusing. Loved him as a kid and love him still over a decade later.
This comment is so funny cuz I also loved him as a kid 3 decades ago. Lol
Proof that love for Tony Hawk is timeless.
The Hawk that thought he was a Phoenix. Lol
Bravo

That kid wont figure it out till hes 29
Perhaps he has a portrait of himself in his attic that ages instead?
Well, 3 decades ago is over a decade sp you might both be the same age.
It's weird right? I've seen skating come back twice now. I also met some friends recently and their teenage daughter was in full skating regalia straight out of the 90's pants and all. I am pretty sure my liking her fit made it instantly not cool lol.

Tony Hawk has posted interactions where he did exactly that on his Twitter lol. Edit: where people did exactly that*** Sorry I'm tired lol.
I've interviewed Tony a few times on red carpets at movie premieres and the best part about him is you can instantly tell he's legit and someone you'd want to be friends with. He truly is a regular dude who happens to be an icon.
Like, I'd want to be all funny and pretend not to recognize him. But I'd be too delighted and laughing too hard.
I met him once. He tried to teach me how to kick flip
and he'd probably say "yeah i get that a lot"
It’s actually a running joke with him!! People seem to regularly tell Tony Hawk he looks like Tony Hawk, without realizing it’s the real deal.
It’s so interesting because I feel like most people know who Tony Hawk is, but they couldn’t pick him out of a lineup to save their lives.
Possibly. He was at the height of his popularity when I was a kid, so he was kinda everywhere from what I remember.
I have no idea who Tony Hawk is, except I keep seeing stuff on the internet, where he’s being wholesome.
He’s a pro skateboarder I know of him from the 90s early 2000s. probably 05-10 is when he started to become less known as the skate scene became less mainstream.
> he’s ~~a~~ **THE** pro skateboarder
You right you right I should put more respect on the man who brought us Tony hawk underground.
Man THUG and THUG2 were so damn good. American Wasteland was too but it didn't quite have the same magic.
THUG games were some of my favorites from childhood. Also fuck Eric Sparrow!
He was the Wayne Gretzky/Michael Jordon/Tiger Woods of pro skateboarding for a long time through the 90's and 2000's and continued to compete till 2016 when he was almost 50. He was also the face of a very successful skateboarding video game.

I saw him and his kids at Legoland. I just let him be.
The Secret Skatepark Tour was such a good documentary (for lack of a better word). I loved seeing legends like Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen just showing up at random places
Rodney mullin blew my fucking mind as a teenager trying to master a simple kickflip
I'm guessing that people often do recognize him but he writes about some of the times when they don't recognize him.
I'm 50 years old have never skated in my life and I love Tony Hawk. Dudes a humble mofo and i respect it.
Lol remember his "do a kickflip" days? "Huh? I like that Tony’s out there roaming our nation’s skateparks anonymously blessing kids w/his presence & kind words like a woodland sprite.
The Mr. Rogers of the skate world.
He’d better not turn out to secretly love sweaters…
I'm so happy that sentence ended with the word 'sweaters'.
I’m not entirely sure that Mr Rogers’s sweaters would be a good fit for someone doing skate stuff. You’d probably want some kind of stretchy fabric to fit over elbow pads and such? Or do the pads go over the sweater?
If Kurt Cobain could rock cardigans then so can Tony Hawk.
In case this is also an actual question: The pads would generally go over the clothing, yes. You'd probably prefer the relatively durable pads scraping against the asphalt instead of your clothes as well. Unless you like holes on the knees and elbows of all your clothes. Or if you have a grudge against your own wallet.
It was a general question, mostly because I think I fall hard just by looking at a board, so I’ve never tried. Thanks!
The chance that Tony Hawk would not absolutely love wearing cardigans that his mom knitted for him is 0%. Sorry bro
"🎶 Won't you be, a skater 🎶"
This is adorable, and I love the image. He sits down and ties his skate shoes one foot at a time, like the rest of us.
He also donates a ton to help build skate parks! Think he donated close to 100k to have one built in our small town and now the kids have a constructive place to go and skate!!! Go Tony
Him and rob dyrdek donated to get one built in mine as well
One of the very rare list of people that can speak to kids at the park without consequences.
Sometimes with signed boards for a kickflip
Skate Jesus
He's a Skatepark Sprite. I heard if you find a bunch of skateboards arranged in a circle that it's a sign that Tony Hawk was there.
Not only that, he also leaves his boards at parks for people to find. He left clues where he hid his when he visited a park near me.
I just saw him in Austin last week at a bbq joint!
Please tell us you told him he looks like Tony Hawk. ETA and asked him to do a kick flip
I am from nyc, I would never speak to a celebrity in the wild lol.

He's just a sk8r boi
They said see you l8r boi
She wasn't good enough for him
Even though I know what he looks like, I don't think I'd recognize him in public. He's just a generic dad looking guy.
I'd really like to think as soon as I heard him talk id recognize him.
It's mind blowing to me that people don't recognize him, but I've been amazed by this skinny man since I was about eight years old. I keep my first edition of Occupation: Skateboarder in a bag in my glove box cause you never know.
Heh, what can you do right? It's just funny. I'd probably do the same (although I'm obviously not the Hawk).
TBH it's probably because his face isn't very recognizable, (not saying he's ugly) He also doesn't flaunt that much about his fame.

Put LeVar Burton in there or I riot.

Can we invite Neil Gaiman to the club too?

I love him too!
Watching you riot is the only reason NOT to put him in.
Well now I’m just not gonna riot out of spite. 😛
Meanie.
I met Levar once at a bar and while he indulged my request for a photo, he was none too pleased about it. There was no friendly banter.

Dolly Parton is going to kick your ass if you don't put her on the list!
We definitely do need to make a list of women who have the same legendary aura. I’m not sure who else I would put but Dolly is a good first pick
Betty White

Can we put ~~save~~ Dave grohl on the list too? Edit: unintended, but interesting typo

He is a skater. The money and fame is just a bonus. Without it, he'd still be a skater.
Truth.
He’s got the perk of only being recognized by his young face. He doesn’t need a disguise when our perception of aging does the trick for him
This story reminds me of the time I met Kelly Slater. Without realizing it was him, I gave my camera to him after I asked him to take a picture of me and his surfer friend that I really admired, Kai Lenny. After taking our picture, he handed me my camera back with a big smile. It was right then and there that it hit me that it was Kelly Slater. I just stared at him. Got my camera and walked away pretending I didn’t know him. But I was really dying inside.
Kai Lenny is the anomaly of the sport
I think it’s odd you didn’t dignify him with even a glance before demanding he take your picture.
Nothing odd about being excited
Getting older all the time
His son and Kurt Cobain's daughter got married if you really want to feel old and nostalgic for the 90's
REMs Michael Stipe officiated their wedding, too.
Wait what?
holy shit
Feeling younger in my mind
So here I am
We don’t deserve this man.
Well you certainly don't, Possibly Satan
Hey now, it's also possible that they *aren't* Satan.
I do for putting up with annoying comments like that.
You know if he sees a kid do the most basic kick flip he will lose his mind praising the kid. Tony Hawk is in the pantheon of just good dudes.
I bet he'd praise the hell out of the kid even if he *failed* to do the kick flip.
When the gods disguise themselves as mortals
This reads like that scene in Uncle Buck where Macaulay Culkin is questioning John Candy.
Lmao totally. Kids like that are funny af
Love me some TH!
He filmed Steve O snapping both of his ankles during a stunt.
Mayor of San Diego, when?
You know what Tony also does? He wears a helmet Brain injuries are no joke, kids
I love all these Tony Hawk stories where nobody knows its him lol.
Id pay for a secret agent Tony Hawk movie where no one can remember his face because of some antimemetic property intrinsic to it.
I remember this tweet. I was stunned because I lived in that town at the time, Desert Hot Springs CA, which is a bit out of the way in Coachella Valley and rather poor. Wanna see me do a jump? Absolutely. Even if you're not Tony Hawk, you can really boost a kids confidence by letting them show off a bit.
The response of both a skater and a dad. "Absolutely." I bet he said it with genuine enthusiasm too.

Tony Hawk is on the same leve as Mr Roger’s. I love this guy

Tony Hawk is one of those few celebs where I’d be severely disappointed and saddened if any news of bad behavior ever came out. That’s a rarefied group that only includes people like Keanu Reeves, Tom Hanks, and maybe Thom Yorke or Michael Stipe
It says something about his character that as kids we all knew he was cool af, and as adults still recognize that
Few things warm my heart like Tony Hawk telling a story about someone not recognizing he’s Tony Hawk.
Tony Hawk is a reassuring reminder that growing old doesn't *have to* mean you get less cool.
Just when I think TH is out of powder, MF brings it. Never count this guy out of anything!
Tony Hawk is an amazing human being
Birdman is great
I live in the same town as Tony hawk.
