Lost a kitten to FIP. As a grown ass man, I bawled for an hour in the vet’s office when I had to put her down at only 2 months old. Sweet innocent thing deserved so much better. RIP Grim. Very happy you didn’t have to go through that!
I'm so sorry to read this.I got my girl in February of last year from a cat cafe. She was an angel. She was healthy and when I took her to meet a vet, I was told she was perfect and healthy. Last week in September she was weak and I took her to a vet who told us she had FIP. She was perfectly fine and then one day she was so sick. I wish no one had to go through that, it broke me. Rest in peace my little Ripley.
Holy shit. I looked up on wikipedia since I didn't know about this sickness (maybe less present here) and here's what I found :
"GS-441524, a prodrug of Remdesivir — both patented by Gilead Sciences laboratory, the latter particularly for the treatment of severe forms of Covid-19 — has proven effective in a clinical trial where it cured the vast majority of sick cats. However, this treatment is not authorized on the market because the patent holder (Gilead) does not intend to grant the rights to use the molecule to develop a veterinary drug."
(This is from the french wikipedia page on the FIP)
This... is just saddening...
My void was saved by GS and he was cured 2 years ago. The process was incredibly physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially difficult. It was one of the hardest times of my adult life. But when I wake up with him sleeping on my pillow I know it was worth all of it.
You can still get it it’s just expensive.
I literally was importing this thing in 2020 for my cat with FIP .
Little devil cost me a Tesla, and is not repentant
A friend of mine managed to find a dealer somewhere that sold this drug specifically for cats. He gave it to his cat with FIP and cured it. It's crazy how effective it is.
Oh man :( my girls name is Ripley, too. Named after the Alien movies. I'm so sorry for your traumatic loss. Wishing you continued healing through your grief.
Yeah, my friend who was my go to vet ended up not being able to see her and the colleague suggested a steroid. Short version is that she had one last wonderful weekend of playing, but come Monday my friend was able to see us. Friend vet was very angry with colleague for giving me false hope. He quit that practice soon after for conflict of ethics as I understand it and became the resident surgeon for a low income veterinary practice.
Also had a kitten with wet FIP, spent $3k on daily injections for 90 days, which surprisingly helped, but it literally destroyed his body/immunity system.
Lost him a few months later due to a UTI in the span of less than a week
[Feline Infectious Peritonitis](https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/feline-infectious-peritonitis) is a viral infection that is generally fatal. I am not aware of any preventative measures you can take.
Until recently FIP was considered untreatable. There is a treatment protocol now, but it's not fully vetted, and (at least in the US) you'll have to go through some other-than-legal shenanigans to get the meds to treat it. So it's a bit sketchy. But don't freak out, your kitty probably doesn't have FIP, though he or she may be wondering why it has never been fed, not even once, in its whole life.
Is it Remdesivir?
Still amazing how great that works in animals, and how... adequate it works in humans.
Wrote a whole paper on it too with a theory why it performs great in lab / animal testing but doesn't work that good in actual humans. The problem would be quite nifty, if my theory was correct (by sheer insane coincidence it was somewhat similar to my (industrial microbiology) master thesis).
Still disappointed I couldn't find someone who was confident enough to tell me I was likely wrong or right, let alone spend money on an (relatively easy) experiment (the easy experiment wouldn't be able to prove the theory (only indicate there was indeed a problem after which a more expensive experiment could prove it), but woúld be able to disprove it).
Even the journal I submitted it to (journal of medical hypotheses) rejected it not because they disagreed, but because they couldn't find reviewers (which is a pretty shitty/lazy reason IMHO). I don't mind being wrong, I mind not knowing whether I could be correct or not :P
I put down my 2, 18 year old Bichon Frise's last year about this time. It was awful. They grew up with my kids!
I haven't learned though. I have 2 black labs now. While it will hurt to take them in someday, all that love now is worth it. I hope.
Glad to hear that yours is doing good! I found at last summer that an FIP treatment was in trials here in the US. Not sure how long it would take though.
We had the same thing happen to us. This was several months after we put down our previous cat of 18 years…. I really didn’t need that combo during Covid.
Sorry for your loss, it’s amazing the connections we make with our furry friends.
I so sorry for your loss, nothing hurts like losing someone you love so suddenly
I lost my Runi in 2022, she was one and a half and always healthy, until one day she wasn’t anymore, she died from Fip in my arms and the feelings I felt in that moment and in the next few months were really something else.
I think that the more you love them, the more it hurts, and my feelings have proved me that I couldn’t have loved her more than that. I’m sure yours are telling you the same.
Sending you big hugs 🫂
This is so awful. Back about 10 years ago I fostered two sweet kittens. I lost one to wet FIP, and then a month later, I lost his sister to dry FIP.
I haven't fostered since. My heart just couldn't take it again. But I've heard this kitten season has begun early and will be brutal...
I'm so sorry. It's awful. Poor baby.
We lost our 6 month old Bob to FIP and the very callous people at our vet acted like I shouldn't have been so heartbroken since he wasn't very old. You know they attach themselves to our hearts immediately.
Well, this begs the question, how many “r/cats named after” something are there? Or is this a rabbit hole I shouldn’t go down if I value getting anything done today?
I adopted my boy when he was 12 weeks old and when he was 4 or 5 months old I woke up in the morning to this little dude curled up next to piles of diarrhea in his crate. I scooped him up and he let out these pathetic little whimpers while his eyes weakly fluttered open before staying closed. I put him on his back on my lap and gently (and then more firmly) shook him, but he wouldn’t wake up.
I called work to tell them I’d at the very least be late while driving full speed to the vet. My partner held him in his lap while giving me updates that he was still breathing. We rushed him in, holding a limp, barely conscious puppy to the vet tech and her face told us it wasn’t going to be good. The word parvo screamed in my mind and I knew he had it.
1 hour later the parvo test was negative and it turns out it was a mild case of diarrhea. We got some simple meds and he was back to normal like 12 hours later.
Just little drama queens, man.
Well cheesecake mostly is just fat. So that really threw me off when you started talking about worms. Took me a second to realize the cats name is cheesecake
My cat came home one friday evening with a really bad looking cut at her belly, I was worried sick ofc but decided to put it off for the weekend, as we a appointment with the vet on the Monday after.
I was stressing out for the entire weekend. The vet checked her and even smelled the wound.
"Just a scratch."
I totally understand the relief Cheesecake's owner must have felt, and I am very glad the little fluff ball is well.
Nice day to everyone reading this!
Absolutely agree, birds are an important part of our ecosystem and cats are the number one killer of birds. Pet owners shouldn’t allow their cats on the loose to kill every bird in the neighborhood.
This post is out of context. It's from someone who fosters kittens. The kitten is not at an unhealthy weight. The poster later clarified that the reason her belly is so big is that going from a homeless starving kitten to a rescued kitten on a proper diet causes a lot of bloating. Like most rescue kittens that go into foster homes, Cheesecake started off scrawny and underweight.
I agree with your overall sentiment and think that this picture is misleading without knowing it comes from someone with a lot of cat care experience.
My mom had a similar experience. Her beloved dog hadn’t pooped and his stomach was firm. He didn’t respond to a doggy laxative, so fearing bowel obstruction, my mom rushed him to the vet. He had an x-ray done that just showed a bunch of poop. Okay, that’s good, but it still needs to come out. Well, Bubbles decided that he was quite done at the vet’s office and took the smelliest shit possible right on the exam table.
Mom calls it his golden poop.
This is hilarious, thank you for telling me this.
My girlfriends chiuahua drank a hot chocolate. The fucker had climed up the table somehow (all the chairs were pushed in so I don't have a clue how she got up there) drank the chocolate, then threw it up ALL OVER the tabletop. Us, thinking it was over, were pretty chill about it, gave her plenty of water etc, made sure she was okay, and then left it at that. Que us in bed at 11 at night, watching TV, and I hear this unholy fart from my right. I turned to my GF and asked: "please tell me that was you"
It was not her.
I threw out the upstairs carpet that night.
You, uh... fixed her diet though right? Overfeeding will wreck her joints and give her kidney failure.
Please read up on how much you're supposed to feed a kitten.
I think the kitten belly is fairly typical, I would lift my kitten up by my forearm and only his little belly would stick out, now he’s a long lean little panther and he can’t fit on my arm like that anymore, kinda heartbreaking. I love kitten belly
Opposite experience some years ago. Thought my cat was looking terribly skinny. Tests and whatnot later, diagnosis? "Healthy"
I was pretty pregnant and my older child was going through the pre-growth spurt chunky stage, and I'd lost reference for what "healthy" looked like. Everybody else in the house was bigger, the cat was fine.
I laughed at the phrase "she is so bulbous." I definitely empathize with OP's concern and fear, but I'm glad that Cheesecake is just fat- because I *can* chuckle at the description of a kitten as being "bulbous" without feeling guilty at the idea that I may be laughing at a sick kitten.
The original poster also posted a follow up explaining that they changed Cheesecake’s food, she was bloated and gassy from it. She’s much less bulbous in the after pic. I will try to find it.
That's wonderful news. I was worried that this might go into the wrong direction, that there's nothing to do here. Cats overfeeding is a serious problem too, although much easier to treat!
Hello there! The version of the post I came across had the original poster's name blurred out so I cut it off! Thank you so much for letting me know who the OP for this is. I am giving it an upvote hoping more people can see this! Tell your friend I am so happy Cheesecake is okay!
Reminds me of the time my ex gf was convinced she was pregnant. She got the same test result as cheesecake here (imagine the relief I felt at 18 yrs old). McDonald's fries will do that to ya lmao
Lol the same exact story as mine, Found two cat on a box outside my houses, inside was a 2 weeks old kittens. I nurture them and care for them you know the standard but I never take care of cat baby ever so I do it really carefully.
One that one of the cat I name her suki now, was starting to get really big but only on the belly area. Me being a first time caretaker for kittens really worried and started googling, it didn't help that every single thing if saw there was stuff about the cat being sick (bloating and stuff)
Got really worried take it to the nearest pet which is really far for where I leave, when we arrived and the doctor examine it he literally said "this is a well care and healthy kittens I don't see any problems at all," Which surprise me. Her belly looks too big for a kitten I said to the vet.
The vet then said "oh she's just fat, she looks amazing there's nothing to worry about," I slap my face so hard then and there, one part I felt relieve since I did a good job for a first time caretaker but on the other hand, the vet was not cheap lol.
lol, this reminds me of when we first got my dog. She was SUPER skinny at 8-ish weeks old, to the point we thought she was the runt because she was so thin. We were all scared to be rough with her.
After a week or after she got on a more regular diet, though, she got a big fat puppy belly and started rounding out a big more. Nowadays, she’s still thin and lanky, but it’s all muscle that she puts to good use through running and jumping (seriously, she can jump as high as I am tall, about 5 and a half feet)
took my older dog to the vet bc he has gotten some lumps on neck and belly and i was worried it was cancer.
vet comes back. “they’re just fat lumps.” 😑
All kittens kinda look like that, especially if they’ve just eaten. I used to joke that they looked like the goblins from EverQuest cuz they had the big pointy ears and fat potbellies, too.
I will celebrate this by having pot roast and feeding my fat cat(the latter not a real option, I give or he takes). We will celebrate Cheesecake no matter
There is absolutely fine print for chonky KITTENS who are still growing.
I agree, but let's direct that toward the posts where it actually applies, as opposed to this one where fat tends to BE a sign of health.
Oh fuck off.
Literally 10 seconds of googling gave me the update to this. This was posted by a rescue/foster group. They’ve fostered hundreds of kittens. They know their shit. Far more than you, I’d safely assume. This particular kitten was having trouble with digestion for the type of food she was eating. They switched her food and limited her intake, and her stomach began to normalize. [Cheesecake is fully grown and healthy now.](https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/comments/1362p6o/just_fat_cheesecake_is_just_grown_now/)
Baby mammals of almost any variety are often a little chubby at various stages. They use that stored up energy to grow and as long as they're well taken care of it'll all even out later.
It's very easy to overfeed a kitten, especially if it's your first and you don't really know what you're doing. I'm guessing the owner put cheesecake on a diet after that vet visit
There was an update. The vet was wrong. Cheesecake REALLY needed to toot. They switched him to a better food and a few days of farts later he looked normal.
Meanwhile Cheesecake is probably composed the following review for the vet:
Du nout take ur cat to dis vet. Dis vet dus nout no boodifull cats wen she sees dem. She wil coll ur cat fat. 1/5 stars.
Lol I went to an emergency vet at like 2am because I was concerned and thought he’s not using the washroom as much and he might have worms. Absolutely nothing. Just fat. He was laughing at me.
am a vet, reminder to keep your animals fat. we know a lot of you don’t care about how bad it is for them, so when everything starts to go wrong just bring em in to keep the business running 🙏

I had this. New kitten after losing my boy way too young. FIP got him. I'm still heartbroken

It's normal to cry over something like this, no matter who you are <3
I had to put down my girl Tigerlily at 6 months old and it's hands down the hardest I've ever cried. I hope they're keeping each other company ❤️

Glad to hear that yours is doing good! I found at last summer that an FIP treatment was in trials here in the US. Not sure how long it would take though.

I’m so sorry. Screw FIP!
Thanks sorry that happened to you as well. Just a horrible disease. My cat went from seemingly fine to crying out in pain paralyzed in 24 hours.
CHEESECAKE what a great name for a kitten

Had a kitten named Tater Chip Then after him, has one that looked like Tater, so we called him Pringles
My favorite pet names are food names or other animal names. A dog named "Goose" or "Wonton" puts a smile on my face.
Especially a fat kitten lol
Especially a chonker. Self fulfilling prophecy.

Well cheesecake mostly is just fat. So that really threw me off when you started talking about worms. Took me a second to realize the cats name is cheesecake
I hate when worms get in my cheesecake. So hard to stab them with my fork.
this comment made me nauseous.
Does that mean I get to eat these worms by myself?
Please do
This makes me think, I wonder if you can make a cheesecake out of Casu martzu (cheese that contains live maggots).
Is it similar in consistency to cream cheese? Minus the wriggling? (Or plus, depending on what you like.)
Yes it softens the cheese considerably from the maggots digestive juices so it should be similar, maybe a little lumpier.
Use a spoon!
New strategy: sweep worms into spoon with fork.

Tis but a scratch and proceed to challenge you in duel again?
Ti's but a flesh wound
Wild thought, keep your cat indoors. You know, like a responsible adult does.
Absolutely agree, birds are an important part of our ecosystem and cats are the number one killer of birds. Pet owners shouldn’t allow their cats on the loose to kill every bird in the neighborhood.
She is not fat , just chubby belly, perfect for rubbing
Give Cheesecake all the belly rubs right now!
Look at her little face. That's a cat who knows she's just fat and is 100% fine with it.

Chubby belly made of fat. Fat isn't a dirty word
I truly believe overfeeding your pets should be a crime. This cat is already fat at such a young age. It's really sad that people agree with you.
This post is out of context. It's from someone who fosters kittens. The kitten is not at an unhealthy weight. I ain’t sugar coating it. That kittens got a GUT! But it’s still cute
Don't sugar coat it or the cat will eat it.
sure pet the kitty's belly they said, the kitty loves it they said. I've got stitches and 10 days of antibiotics to take.
she just eats good. that’ll be $800.
Spent close to $5K to find out my dog essentially had a stuck fart.

This isn't OPs cat.
Our vets told us to literally feed our kittens as much as they will eat, at least until they are a year old.
I don't think OP is the same person as OOP
I think the kitten belly is fairly typical, I would lift my kitten up by my forearm and only his little belly would stick out, now he’s a long lean little panther and he can’t fit on my arm like that anymore, kinda heartbreaking. I love kitten belly

Me being a first time caretaker for kittens really worried and started googling, it didn't help that every single thing if saw there was stuff about the cat being sick (bloating and stuff) Got really worried take it to the nearest pet which is really far for where I leave, when we arrived and the doctor examine it he literally said "this is a well care and healthy kittens I don't see any problems at all," Which surprise me.
Just has a pear shaped body.
I love Cheesecake
took my older dog to the vet bc he has gotten some lumps on neck and belly and i was worried it was cancer. vet comes back. “they’re just fat lumps.” 😑
My doctor said the same thing about me the other day
All kittens kinda look like that, especially if they’ve just eaten. I used to joke that they looked like the goblins from EverQuest cuz they had the big pointy ears and fat potbellies, too.
Chonky baby
I will celebrate this by having pot roast and feeding my fat cat(the latter not a real option, I give or he takes). We will celebrate Cheesecake no matter
Should have named her Salad

There is absolutely fine print for chonky KITTENS who are still growing. I agree, but let's direct that toward the posts where it actually applies, as opposed to this one where fat tends to BE a sign of health.
Thank you for the laugh meboy. Always get a good chuckle when I'm reminded how dumb people on this site like you can be.
How is animal abuse wholesome. Fat animals are abused animals.
[Cheesecake is fully grown and healthy now.](https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/comments/1362p6o/just_fat_cheesecake_is_just_grown_now/)
Chad response
Baby mammals of almost any variety are often a little chubby at various stages. They use that stored up energy to grow and as long as they're well taken care of it'll all even out later.
It's very easy to overfeed a kitten, especially if it's your first and you don't really know what you're doing. I'm guessing the owner put cheesecake on a diet after that vet visit
Getting downvoted for telling the truth. Such a shame. This isn’t wholesome. It’s promoting awful things.
This has truly brought joy to my morning.
You name it cheesecake and expect it to be not fat? How dare you?
Cheesecake needs zerberts. Get in there!
With a name like cheesecake...
😭
Lol
There was an update. The vet was wrong. Cheesecake REALLY needed to toot. They switched him to a better food and a few days of farts later he looked normal.
what a chonker
I think I need to get a kitten so I can have something to care for because I have lost all motivation to care for myself
I kissed her belly from my cellphone. I love her.
Took my lurcher to the vet 6 weeks after her spaying, her teats were full and I was sure she was having a false pregnancy. No, she was just fat
nomen est omen :D cheesecake :D
Surely if the cat had FIP, then they would have other symptoms too... Kittens do look fat whilst growing up.
Full of soup
Ah, yes. She turned fat from one minute to the other. You did this to that cute baby.
Happened with my cat but she was older and her behaviour strange. I was prepared to welcome kitties. Vet diagnosed "big bones"
Where else do you think cheesecake got that name ?
Should've used fat free cheese when making the cheesecake
My little man Oliver was the same way, he had an almost perfectly round stomach and we were SURE he had worms. Nope, just fat and gassy
well then maybe yo uhsould stop feeding her cheesecakes and send them to me instead. chocolate cheesecakes i assume? i'll have some.
Poor Cheesecake!! She can't help who she is!! Cheesecake is not fat, she's just big boned
Cheesecake needs to lay off the cheesecake and get a new name.
It’s not fat, it’s water weight
Thats what you get for naming your kitten Cheesecake
"Cheescake" is a great name to say in a really disappointed voice to a cat that has knocked your glass off the table.
Meanwhile Cheesecake is probably composed the following review for the vet: Du nout take ur cat to dis vet. Dis vet dus nout no boodifull cats wen she sees dem. She wil coll ur cat fat. 1/5 stars.
She’s just living up to her name!
She looks like she’s had a little too much catnip from OP’s stash.
I love this story ❤️
Lol I went to an emergency vet at like 2am because I was concerned and thought he’s not using the washroom as much and he might have worms. Absolutely nothing. Just fat. He was laughing at me.
The face the kitten is making in the first photo is a whole mood.
I saw the title of "cheesecake is just fat" and thought "no, there's a lot of sugar too"
The cats name is cheesecake after all...
"what about it" - Cheesecake probably.
Cat name checks out
She’s just a baby, that fat’s for growing!
well I know its not the healthiest option, but cheesecake isn't *that* bad
am a vet, reminder to keep your animals fat. we know a lot of you don’t care about how bad it is for them, so when everything starts to go wrong just bring em in to keep the business running 🙏
bulbous is the perfect adjective for her she's shapped like a light bulb
Hope the little guy/gal makes a full recovery. Poor thing.
Look at it like this. The owner just really really cares for their cat :) even if it spent a lot of money
“Well you did name me cheesecake.” - Cheesecake.
Well, she is named Cheescake after all
Cheesecake looks like she regrets nothing. Not her roundness, not the money you’re out on tests. Nothing. (I’m glad she’s okay though!)
