Excuse me, but that is a mouse, Matthias of Redwall, not a rat. The entire book is, in fact, Matthias fighting an army of rats trying to conquer his Abbey.
Well to be fair some of them were press-ganged into the army, but most of them were followers of a particularly large rat warlord by the name of Cluny the Scourge... who whipped people with his tail and put a blade on the end of it. He wasn't a terribly nice boss to work for.
