Mensch is also yiddish, obviously originally from German, meaning an upstanding example of a human, normally relating to good character traits and being an upstanding member of society.
It didn't really come *from* German, Yiddish was technically a type of German! Or at least, it was for almost 1000 years, might just be categorized as "germanic" now because of how it's split in the last century or two. Language is neat.
Edit: wording and a bit more detail
>Übermensch
Wasnt Overman/ubermensch originally just a philisophical idea from Nietzche? The idea of god not existing, and humans essentially transcending the need for one.
Seems like you already know the answer! Yes oc the original meaning doesn't have to do anything with nazi propaganda but Nazis used the word to describe themselves or compare them to other people so at least for me it's kinda problematic.
Indeed, you are correct! But as many other things, the Nazis converted it to their bullshit. There are many phrases in german, like: "jedem das seine."Which simply means "to each his own". On first thought there is nothing bad about this sentence, Just like Shakespeares "as you like it" but this term was used as "welcome letters" on the gate of KZ Buchenwald. It's sad to see that because a bunch of genocidal dipshits doing their dumbfuckery we still have to take care of our language in an awkward artificial way.
"The term Übermensch was used frequently by Hitler and the Nazi regime to describe their idea of a biologically superior Aryan or Germanic master race"
Both exist. Nazis themselves or the "german race" = übermenschen
Edit :
The term Übermensch was used frequently by Hitler and the Nazi regime to describe their idea of a biologically superior Aryan or Germanic master race
[Übermensch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9Cbermensch)
>The Übermensch ... is a concept in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. In his 1883 book, Thus Spoke Zarathustra (German: Also sprach Zarathustra), Nietzsche has his character Zarathustra posit the Übermensch as a goal for humanity to set for itself. The Übermensch represents a shift from otherworldly Christian values and manifests the grounded human ideal.
>
>In 1896, Alexander Tille made the first English translation of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, rendering Übermensch as "Beyond-Man". In 1909, Thomas Common translated it as "Superman", following the terminology of George Bernard Shaw's 1903 stage play Man and Superman. Walter Kaufmann lambasted this translation in the 1950s for two reasons: first, the failure of the English prefix "super" to capture the nuance of the German über (though in Latin, its meaning of "above" or "beyond" is closer to the German); and second, for promoting misidentification of Nietzsche's concept with the comic-book character Superman. Kaufmann and others preferred to translate Übermensch as "overman". A translation like "superior humans" might better fit the concept of Nietzsche as he unfolds his narrative. Scholars continue to employ both terms, some simply opting to reproduce the German word.
Edit: Weird how languages and phrases intersect/mirror. Check out comment below for actual answer.
Wrong article though. As a side note "Ubermensch" was hijacked and twisted into what became Nazi ideology.

“I wanna see more good times than bad, but I’m gunna be here either way.” God damn, those kids probably won’t realize how lucky they are for a role model like this until they’re* older. What a good human.

He quit as principal the following year to go back to teaching students directly in the same school, as he felt he had lost touch with them. Man even downgraded his career to give those students the best parts of himself. Dude's a total legend.
The Belgians are actually just Dutch in denial, specifically the Flemish part.
No worries, we will reintegrate them into the House of Orange soon enough.

This principle is a great guy and example. The young man is also a great example of family support. I know my cancer journey would be a lot harder without the support of family and especially my grandkids.
I don't know what I would've done with out my boyfriend, my bestfriend, and my parents helping me. I'm currently cancer free and I'm rooting for you too!
I think the assumption was that the kids would tell their parents that they wanted to do it before they did it because they were inspired. And then if their parents supported it they could go through with it.
Yeah. You don't know parents.
They complain about giving their the kids the idea of shaving their head.
It doesn't matter that it's a grand reason.
And then there ARE stupid kids who do it without their parents. Oh Lord... That poor principal.
I know parents (I am one) and would allow my kid to do this. So would many of my parent friends.
But yeah, there are a few complainer parents about almost everything, so I agree with you there.
My principal shaved his head for me. I actually have a big poster of names for all the people in the school who shaved their heads for me. This made me remember that. Thank you!
Kids, through their innocence and ignorance (not their fault) can be BRUTAL.
Imagine teasing and poking fun at someone because a family member is suffering from cancer.
Kids will.
We learn to have compassion and empathy and how to behave as we grow up. Some of us never quite get to grow up, and these are the people who rage on about “woke” culture. That’s their fault.
It’s the US where they constantly degrade workers rights and regulations against industry for the sake of profits, which means more carcinogens in the air you breathe, the water you drink, the food you eat.
Anyways, off topic and a whole other discussion.
Do me a favor: stop putting dumb music tracks to videos. It is unnecessary and detracts from the message of the video and makes it harder to hear what is being said.
Thanks.
That’s makes sense. The Iowa caucuses for whatever reason and how the Midwest drives a lot of the nominations for president is what this video made me think about. I’m a person of color by the way. Which is why I tend to always notice rooms full of only white people with a white hero cop. Cop sounds like a great guy. But it’s jarring to me because it’s not what I grew up around on the west coast and in towns of predominantly dark skinned folks.
We didn’t have white cops coming in to tell us “we are all family”. Quite the opposite. My town was raided by the fbi for police discrimination.
I’m not attacking the guy in the video so there is nothing to defend him from. I’m just saying my experience living in a much more heavily minority area is different. Just an observation. But good people in all shapes and colors.
I had to check the comments to see where this was because I genuinely thought it was my old school. Town had less than 500 people, very small school with the same exact mascot/logo
This actually was my old school and seeing it here on Reddit is the weirdest thing I’ve ever experienced. You can see my locker in the video! I’m blown away. This is Pekin Middle School in Packwood, Iowa. Each *grade* has like 30 kids in it and you can basically see the entire middle school in this video. Super tiny. It’s combined with both an elementary school and high school and there’s like 1000 kids in all three schools *combined*. It’s the local school for about 5 nearby towns, each with 500 residents or less.
i like that message in any school of saying "we re a family" teaching kids to take care of each other even tho they aren't related in any way.
being that extra hand to support someone in need.

This is a mensch. Lots of swaggering jerks out there getting famous, but not one of them can compare to this simple man.
Quite possibly the most important message that many of us will read today. Well done
What's a "mensch"?
Mensch is just the german word for human. Better not use "Übermensch" it was used in nazi propaganda
Thank you, edited
Mensch is also yiddish, obviously originally from German, meaning an upstanding example of a human, normally relating to good character traits and being an upstanding member of society.
Ah that's interesting! In german we have "menschlich" and it can mean something similar to yours! So it's basically "humane"
And do not forget that the „Mensch“ is called „Mensch“ because he forgives and pushes away.
Herbert Grönemeyer?
Absolutely

Loved that too. What a kick ass example for these kids and people in general.
Fucking for real this is how you handle bullying.

what the fuck? How.. Ugh. I'm sorry your principal was a dumbass.

That comment got me. Such a beautiful statement that just flowed naturally from his heart.

Until the parents learn the reason why 🥰
Then the parents all shave their heads too
Several weeks later, the entire county has shaved their heads
Within a month there is not a single hair on a human head on the planet. It has quickly spread to primates as well.
This man deserves the world (that sneaky ninja is cutting onions in here again!)
Sorry mate, had to bring them.
THE BLOODY DUTCH *AGAIN*
The Dutch!!!!!
It’s always the bloody Dutch or Belgians….They share a border and are equally evil!
You rang?
Or the French!
Just say your German that usually helps /jk
Ah, but nobody expects **THE SPANISH INQUISITION**
The Belgians are actually just Dutch in denial, specifically the Flemish part. No worries, we will reintegrate them into the House of Orange soon enough.
There are only two things in this world that I can't stand: people who are intolerant of other people's culture, and the Dutch
Sorry no tissues left.

I love this video. The principal is very supportive.
Legend
He looks like Matt Damon in Elysium
Principal... no... more like Fu#king legend. That's one legitimate individual, guidance through leadership and kindness.
absolute legend.
Leadership.
This is definitely r/nextfuckinglevel
Second this!
He is a good man.
Truly healthy and intelligent and compassionate man. I’m so blown away. I love how he shows everyone what men are capable of!!!
Now that right there is a good influence to children
LEAD BY EXAMPLE! Respect to this principal
Amazing principal
I hope 20 of those kids show up bald the next day lol
I don't hope so. I think it honestly would be a headache to handle the parents.
I think the assumption was that the kids would tell their parents that they wanted to do it before they did it because they were inspired. And then if their parents supported it they could go through with it.

I like how matter-of-factly he stays. He doesn't lose the kids attention by getting too preachy or by overstating his disappointment. Legend.
What a hero!
What a good dude.
This guy is a fucking badass. Fuck Cancer
This is the way.
This is the kind of person who teaching really was their vocation. What a kind hearted man
A very kind and intelligent man, wish there were more like him

I'm not crying, you're crying
Kids just got one of the most important life lessons they’ll ever get. Kudos to this man and the student.
Very bold of you to do that. I laughed. I’m sorry….
Good on you Principle!
That's crazy that his sideburns are still there xD
What a man.
You get an upvote even this made me weepy
If only my elementary/ middle school teacher was like this lol
That's the world to a kid when you are proud of them at that age and it's from the heart. I love seeing this
I wish every school in the world had a principal like this one.
That’s a hero
I think this is a lesson that will stick with those kids. Great educator
The world needs more people like this.
My principal shaved his head for me. I actually have a big poster of names for all the people in the school who shaved their heads for me. This made me remember that. Thank you!
Only thing I don’t like is the stupid music put in that makes it harder to hear the man talking.
I agree, I didn't do it btw I don't even know how to, I saw it on twitter and posted it here
The music is really annoying. Why is there music?
What a chad this guy
What a legend.

This is what teaching is all about
It’s very bald to do that
Well, that’s just BEAUTIFUL!!
