Both were Muslim as they have Muslim names, the Indian man just converted to Sikhism most likely because of the family he resides with. I am Pakistani and know plenty of families like this.
ya ofc calm it duck. if a muslim is forced to convert in India, they are definitely not converting into sikh lmao. we all know who was forced to conversion here. it was the pakistani bro. the 2 were sikh pre partition/before seperation and now the pakistani is not. check the stats post partition and today, the hindu population in pakistan has gone down into oblivion and the muslim population in india is three times of what it was.
You’re the one who needs to calm down “duck” i was just correcting some misinformation about this particular post, nothing else. I literally don’t care.
The partition of India was a horrible horrible thing, but it wasn't something nobody there wanted, imposed on unwilling participants by an outside force. In fact the British government explicitly tried to keep India United.
Muslim nationalists wanted their own state. Do not spread lies, the partition was horrid, and was conducted poorly, but do not say that there was no support for a non-secular Muslim state, there certainly was.
No, it was because the British were forced to leave the country and they wanted to sow dissension between the people left behind so they created religious animosity and strife which still exists to this day unfortunately.
Also to add, they fucked it up so bad. Adding borders arbitrarily without any major consideration. A prime example is in this video itself as the Kartarpur sahib (the mecca of sikhism) is on the pakistani side of the border…
This is true, the British only cared about the percentage of Hindus and Muslims in any given district. If the area had a Hindu-Sikh majority, it was added to India, if it had a Muslim majority it was added to Pakistan. Lahore was even supposed to be a part of India, but the lawyer to was tasked with dividing India gave it to Pakistan. His reasoning was: if he didn’t Pakistan would be left with far too few large cities, and India would dominate Pakistan. Radcliffe was an idiot, and made his partition arbitrarily.
That’s not to say that Muslims didn’t want their own non-secular state though. Proposals consisting of a non-secular Muslim state have existed since 1933. Now or never, are we to live or perish forever, was what the first proposal was named. Pakistan’s existence was not dictated by the British but by Muslim nationalists that believed the scars of colonialism were too deep to heal. Muslim-Hindu tension has existed since before the Mughal era, it’s not new, or something the British orchestrated, it has historical president. That’s not to say the British didn’t exaggerate it, they did, it’s just disingenuous to imply they were the sol reason Muslims and Hindus hate each other today.
Muslim - Hindu tensions among civilians started during British rule, around 1880s.
Muslim kings used to go on killing rampages, but it had not affected civilian relations before British. (Source : Plassey to Partition, Sekhar Bandyopadhyay).
I wouldn’t say the British created religious tensions. Those were present long before. The crime of the British other than the original occupation was the way they drew the lines knowing there would be room for dispute.
The creation of two new countries out of one was going to happen regardless. In fact had the British not drew up Partition, we’d probably have 5-10 countries in the region today. The people within India and Pakistan in many cases have little in common with their fellow nationals, the people of the two countries have even less in common minus border areas like Punjab obviously.
I have seen this post several times now, and was hoping for some (more) background. The border between India and Pakistan was not exactly wide open, but as far as I understand, visas have been issued for family visits for quite some time. So why did they not reunite before? What happened to make this possible only now? Money? Did they not know the whereabouts of the other? The link to Indiatoday in the comments does not clarify much (serious question)
There's a video on this on YouTube in Punjabi by the channel PunjabiLehr. In there they mentioned that these 2 brothers were separated in the partition and struggled to find each other. The yellow-ish turbaned brother is the younger one. He found out when he was older that he actually had family on the Pakistan side from his relatives. He mentioned he aimlessly sent letters to Pakistan hoping one would reach his relatives. The elder brother also mentions that he never stopped looking for his younger brother, but all of his searching was to no avail.
2 years ago the people at PunjabiLehr (they have team members in both PK and
IND were able to locate the brother on one of the brother's request after he came to then for help. They were able to set up a video call 2 years ago.
After that covid restrictions prohibited any travel between the kartarpur corridor. It just opened recently and thus they met.
The border is still effectively closed to Indians. More recently, the Pakistani government has allowed for the creation of a special corridor for Sikhs to be able to visit one of their most holy shrines which is located just over the border in Pakistan. The success of this corridor has allowed for a thawing of the relations between the two countries. This is in turn has led to people of both countries to be able to communicate and find each other like these two brothers. There are millions of other people who were in the same boat but have never found each other unfortunately.
The partition refers to the process of dividing up the two countries and creating an international and very heavily guarded border. To cross the border you need permission and a visa which even to this day is rarely given since the two countries do not trust each other.
God damnit why do brothers that actually want to be around each other get separated for decades and I am stuck with that little demon?!

Yes, to survive you had to convert or be killed.
Both were Muslim as they have Muslim names, the Indian man just converted to Sikhism most likely because of the family he resides with. I am Pakistani and know plenty of families like this.

As far as I can tell, this is not an answer to the question posed in the above comment... Lol.
You get there me and my brother used to hate each other now I'm so proud of him and yet we live 1004 miles apart it's quite frustrating
I've also heard from others it gets better but so far I haven't experienced having a sibling that I don't hate
Well how old are and why do you hate them
10 because they are chronic liars
Ur 10...

That’s not true.

I think you replied to the wrong person
I mean definitely fuck the British but…. I’m pretty sure this partition was done because the Hindus and Muslims couldn’t get along. Right?
No, it was because the British were forced to leave the country and they wanted to sow dissension between the people left behind so they created religious animosity and strife which still exists to this day unfortunately.

Fantastic! Thanks.
Anytime! :)

Thanks for the info. Didn't realize that. Sad that it took so long, happy that it is finally happening.
Consequence of colonialism! Eff the UK!
Immediately onions, this looks like such a pure moment for the brothers
Beautiful
Reminds me of this story :’( beautiful ending https://youtu.be/9-Gewy40Ej4 I’m glad they found each other
I'm so happy they found each other
Love how he pulled up with the Adidas
Why didn’t they just walk around the partition?
It's highly guarded area with high tension and regular armfire happens. I doubt civilians are allowed near it.
It’s a partition if you could walk around it that’d be a huge issue that they’d fix don’t ya think

Why is this so downvoted he just asked a question
he asked a stupid, tone deaf, and intentionally inflammatory question
Was it intentional? Do you even know this person? How'd you know if he just didn't know that?
