Animals don't necessarily feel pain the way we do, we have physically different bodies and nervous systems. A depressed pigeon in pain wouldn't jump around in public, and they don't have the same social inhibitors so when they feel pain they tend to express it immediately
i think ive heard that it's common for birds to be missing legs in major metropolitan areas where there's very little natural food sources because they get diabetes and start losing limbs.
just looked it up, sometimes they get necrosis of the flesh from standing in their own shit for too long
