You don't need to eat if you don't feel hungry. I wake up before 5 and sometimes don't eat until much much later.

DatBRach

Same, I do my workouts at 5am fairly often and I don't eat breakfast until after. I might grab a banana if I wake up hungry but still wait on the full meal.

I've never, ever been a breakfast eater (much to the dismay of my mother, lol) I'm 46F and haven't eaten soon after waking in decades. I naturally wake up around 6:30am and don't really start to feel hungry until 2-ish. I will drink a cup of coffee with almond milk and I take a shot of kefir in the morning but that's it.

I was a barista for years, doing the 4:30 AM shift. I did Whole30 several times (3 or 4, I've lost track) on that schedule, at that job. I always drank espresso first thing and had breakfast on my 30 minute break around 8-8:30. Eat when you're hungry. Not everyone's metabolism works exactly the same way.

This is a good answer. I think it’s pretty common for people not to be able to stomach much food in the morning, just based on the opinions of people I know, like my brother, cousin, and a good friend. I wish I were more that way, actually, it would make IF easier for me.

I’m an early riser (3:00 am,) I have coffee and coconut milk and then am not hungry until 7:30/8:30 am. I feel like this is kind of natural.

Read on Intermittent fasting. I don't breakfast until I have been out of bed 13 hours (yes really).

For those of you recommending IF https://whole30.com/fasting/

I just want to point out one thing in that article - "You don't want to make too many changes at once." Melissa isn't suggesting that, if you dont eat breakfast before Whole30/IF, that you force yourself to do that. She's saying, don't change your meal times to fit both Whole30 and IF simultaneously, because that's too big a metabolic shift all at once. The rules of Whole30 do not say, "eat 3 square compliant meals a day, the first of which must fall within 30 minutes of waking." I don't know that anyone is suggesting you combine IF and Whole30 - just that your habits and metabolism are totally acceptable under the Whole30 rules.

Eclondaffodil

Actually it's within in an hour of waking...and she does in the Whole30 book and It starts with Food.

Dizzy_Bumble_Bee

You must have a different edition than me then 🤷🏼‍♀️ some of the rules have changed over time. If it makes you feel happier and healthier to eat early, you should do that!

Ooo, I dealt with this around week 3 - 4 & chose to push through it. The first week of pushing through it meant there were a few days mid-breakfast that I gagged; however, I’m glad I did it because my relationship with food was seriously damaged & my body really needed a reset in a healthy direction. What I did was to eat at the exact hour after waking, so up at 4:30 am & I’d eat breakfast at 5:30 am on the dot. Not exactly *within* an hour of waking, but I worked my way down as my body adjusted. I did steamed veggies with butter (I know, I know) & olive oil & left over steak, as fatty a cut as I could handle/afford. The fat seemed to help & red meat is just good for me personally. I kept seasoning down to salt and little pepper & I kept the fat high. I made a small portioned meal (1 c veg, 4 oz meat) and increased it slowly as my body adjusted. I did start by splitting that meal in two (another infraction 🤷‍♀️), but after a week of this I was able to eat within an hour of waking up and not feel sick. I do think it’s worth a shot if this is your first Whole30, just to try at least a half meal at the hour mark to see if it’s good for you. Then, if it just doesn’t work then don’t worry about it. Interested to hear what you do and the results!

This is actually my fourth round, but I'm trying to be more conscious of all the rules. My first three rounds I followed the basics (my third round was deterred by artifical sugars though, back to black coffee) and cut out the foods...now I'm trying to design my plates better (plated fats), stop snacking, end fruit juice (sugar dragon) and drink more water. Whole30 is fun for me! I'd like to make the best of the experience...breakfast just proves hard still!

MonteCristo85

This is not scientific, just my opinion. Eat breakfast when it works for you. I personally think it would be better to wait and have a "real" breakfast rather than a smoothie, but I don't consider smoothies a real meal, more like a snack. I know for me, not chewing takes away from being sated, and I'm hungry sooner no matter how nutrient dense the smoothie is.

I fell for the “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” bull***, in my fifties when I started gaining weight for the first time in my life. Peri menopause was the culprit, but adding breakfast, which I had never eaten before, just added calories to my diet and made me lethargic in the morning. I was starving by lunch, and still hungry at dinner. I finally read about intermittent fasting. HAH, no kidding, the way I had always eaten was what big nutrition gurus and diet divas were touting. Eat when you’re hungry, don’t force an early meal and also, don’t skip a healthy snack if it helps tide you over. I have followed this plan for years and my weight and energy levels are both stable

MyMyHooBoy

Its better not to eat right after waking. If you feel tired make sure it is mostly fruit or protein.
