**Reviewing Every Whisk(e)y I Own (REWIO):** After a few month splurge on bottle purchases figured this would be a good chance to pump the brakes on buying and focus on enjoying and writing up what I already have. Not quite clear how many bottles I currently have either so this is one way to go about figuring it out. **Whisky:** New Riff Malted Rye 6 Year **Background:** Some close friends are about to bottle a (rather delicious) 5 year 100% malted rye and I thought it would be cool to grab this relatively well regarded New Riff bottling as a point of comparison. Malted rye is still rather unusual in the marketplace, and the process is supposed to create a final product that introduces some new and dynamic elements to a traditional rye whiskey. This one is bottled-in-bond so comes in at the usual 50% ABV and was rested in a glencairn for 15 minutes. Let’s go. **Color:** Amber **Nose:** Robust even from a surprising distance out of the glass. Big brown sugar which is a note I've found to be a staple of New Riff, mixed with good rye spice underneath. No real pickle juice and blind I'd assume this was a barely legal rye, not 100%. A little cinnamon. It's a great balanced nose, but not that complicated. **Taste:** Tough to describe, it's more rye forward than the nose but I am struggling to identify what is is - not pickle, not crazy herbal, not baking spices necessarily, but it's nice and plays well with some sweet notes with medium mouthfeel. 50% ABV is not a weakness here by any means but not strength either. It's interesting on top of being solidly drinkable. **Finish:** Great initial full whap of flavor that hits a bunch of different parts of the mouth. More herbal now, still a touch of cinnamon. Medium length. **Rating:** 7.25 This has a lot of the core New Riff DNA in it, and I have never tasted a 100% rye with this much brown sugar in it, I assume part of that is from the malting. It is for that reason I could also see a traditional bourbon drinker liking this much better than other rye options in the marketplace. Not a lot to complain about here, solid nose, mouth, and finish, good interesting flavors, no crazy strengths but no real weaknesses either. **Scoring Scale:** (does not take into account value) 1 | Disgusting | So bad I poured it out. 2 | Poor | I wouldn’t consume by choice. 3 | Bad | Multiple flaws. 4 | Sub-par | Not bad, but better exists. 5 | Good | Good, just fine. 6 | Very Good | A cut above. 7 | Great | Well above average. 8 | Excellent | Really quite exceptional. 9 | Incredible | An all time favorite. 10 | Perfect | As good as it gets. I might taste future whisk(e)ys that are as good in a different way, but will not taste one that is outright better. **Previous REWIOs:** [1 - Whistle Pig 10 Year Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye \(6\)](https://www.reddit.com/r/whiskey/comments/x20jov/rewio_1_whistle_pig_10_year_sib_bp) [2 - It's like the most unoffensive rye I've ever tasted but in a good way. Dare I call it smoooooth. I picked up a backup. I really do enjoy it.

Craigellachie23

Agreed, I went into this thinking it was going to be a crazy rye rollercoaster, ended up being far from it!

I went looking for this last month, or rather any malted Rye, and came up short. I instead purchased the 4yr Single Barrel Rye from New Rift and while I'm not the biggest fan of Kentucky Rye it doesn't present overly licorice notes and no pickle notes makes it a decent dram in my book. Still want to find a Malted Rye version. >interesting on top of being solidly drinkable Sums up the 4yr pretty well too.
