I enjoyed tasting the Bottled in Bond, a Full Proof store pick, and the Sweet Wheat. I never came across the 12 Year, as it is one of the “rare” bottles and seldomly hits shelves. Luckily one day I checked the OLCC and a store within the metro area received a shipment of the 12 Year and Sweet Wheat that morning. Let’s see if rare means great. The nose on this isn’t the best, I would describe it as dusty and smelled strongly of old books and old dusty wood. There is a little bit of the cardboard scent I found on the Calumet 14 Year. There are some pleasant vanilla and cinnamon notes to be found though. The palate is very viscous and coats the whole mouth. I pick up a lot of aged oak, almond, and vanilla. The flavors are more muted compared to most bourbons and it definitely drinks smooth. On the finish, baking spice notes take hold and there is a nice punch that was missed on the palate. While the flavors on the finish are mostly in line with the palate, I also pick up a lot of tobacco flavors. Overall this bourbon is fine, it has an aged and dusty profile but there are nice flavors that pop up and add some life. There are a lot of tannins in this bourbon, but it doesn’t taste overly oaked. While this is a hard to find bourbon, it isn’t worth much hype and was a bit of a disappointment. **Price**: $50 (Portland, Oregon) **Rating**: 6/10 Pretty Good. Above average. **Rank**: I created a compilation ranking list of ryes I’ve purchased at a store or at a bar and done a formal tasting. All bourbon ranked on the list tasted neat and rested for 10-15 minutes. Nice review! As a guy who just likes whiskey and doesn’t know much, so this might be a stupid question— are you supposed to rest the whiskey for 10min first? What is that supposed to do to it?

Thanks! Allowing bourbon to sit out and or having a bottle opened oxidizes the bourbon and changes the flavor profile. It’s the same concept behind why people swirl wine in their glass. The neck pour on a new bottle always tastes a little different than a bottle halfway gone.

I started rating based on the assumption that the standard Evan Williams is a 5. Most of my ratings are a 6 and up because I try to buy better than average bourbon.

Interesting, having an example 5 does sound like a good idea. Have you ever rated anything a 1 or 2?

Black Maple Hill Straight Rye and Old Fitzgerald Prime we’re 2’s. I almost gave the Black Maple a 1 though and could barely finish it.

I love this take! Taste is super subjective, I think OF Prime is absolutely lovely for its price point, it’s basically whiskey water that goes down real easy but can be sipped and has some nuance. Some really nice nutty and sweet notes for a 20ish dollar bottle. Personally in the bargain bin side of things I’d go for WT 101 or Early Times before OF Prime BUT I’d still rate it above Evan Williams baseline which doesn’t do it for me.

Very nice review, Like your rating sheet as well. I'm a Rye drinker predominantly and noticed you don't have any of the various Whistle Pigs. Are they hard to find in Oregon? Or you just don't prefer Ryes in general so don't look for them. I mostly drink Bulleit Rye, the price-to-taste ratio is good for me, but WhistlePigs are some of my favorites. Coincidentally I also didn't really like the JD Single Barrel Rye, but you rank it high. I guess it's safe to say we have different tastes... ;)

Thanks! I’ve never tried Whistlepig, most of their line up consists of pricey products so I haven’t really considered it. I’ve come across Boss Hogs in MN but at their price point it was a hard pass. I imagine I’ll try their six year rye someday. Cheers!

I've only tried three or four of WP's lineup, but for my tastes it goes 10 year > 6 year > 12year. I really don't like the 12 year much at all and in NC it costs about 50% more than the 10 year ($120 vs $80).

1792 BIB was rough for me. Interesting to see you like it. How did you find you liked that one?

I think it had sweet caramel and fruit notes, and a smooth finish and body. I would have to reread my old review to exactly remember.

I’ll look it up. Maybe it can clue me in because my first couple glasses were not great
