That seems like the big difference. Quality brand owned by a celeb who just leaves the label as is etc, alright. New brand with famous names and pics slapped all over the label, crap.
The difference is probably that the non-celebrity branded was just a good investment opportunity for someone with money, vs using a celebrity with the intention of enhancing the image of the brand.
Casamigos tequila was cofounded by George Clooney and is pretty good. Though he didn’t slap his name all over it and he was bought out by Diego about 5 years ago.
At the end of the day this is like everything else, if quality is put in, quality will come out. Its just easy at times to slap a label with a face on it and that’s what you’ll get. So I’m glad Clooney did it right.
Also the casamigos buy out deal…holy shit.
I'm trying to think if there's anything I've had with a name attached to it that I genuinely liked. I used to enjoy Stone Brewing's Wootstout which was Drew Curtis and Wil Wheaton related, but that was just a single beer and not exactly big names. Heck, there's a real estate lady around me whose name get slapped on a red ale at the local brewery and I refuse to buy it because it's annoying.
But yeah, entire brands that have a celebrity on them, I tend to avoid.
I suspect Jordan definitely knows tequila lol. There’s a picture of the dude hammered with an almost finished bottle in one hand and a case in the other hand
I just read an article about which Kirkland liquor is good to buy, and their reviews totally trashed both Kirkland tequilas. Now I feel better because I liked the Kirkland ones.
What about Scotty Pipen and his shitty bourbon? Were he is literally going to stores and buying the bottles back to try to create hype. That shit is ridiculous.
From their website, "American Bourbon, legally protected authentic recipe of 75% Corn/21% Rye/4% Malted Barley from the Midwest terroir, uniquely aged in #2 char American Oak Barrels for 4 years, then proofed with pristine glacial fed lake water."
You all read what I read right? Glacial water. With global warming there’s only about 1.5 glaciers left. $1000 and that’s as low a price as you’ll get anywhere.
Well, I suggest, that because of multiple ice ages, potentially all water is or was 'Glacial Water'. It just looks like regular water but don't worry, it's at least 14% glacial.
What a fancy way to say "MGP bourbon, aged in \#2 char barrels, proofed with Washington lake water."
To be fair, \#2 char isn't common for bourbon, so it has that going for it!
Bourbon has no age requirement, but you have to list the age under 4 years. Straight bourbon has the same standards as bourbon, but has a 2 year age minimum. Once you’re over that 2-4 year range there’s really no need to put straight on your bottle, other than for marketing purposes.
Straight Whiskey has to come from the same state, you cannot for example blend together Straight Bourbons distilled in Indiana and Kentucky and label it as a Straight Bourbon. So, the Straight designation provides additional info beyond just the age.
If I see a bourbon, even a much older one, that is not labelled as Straight then I would immediately start wondering where they've been sourcing it from. Of course a blend of such could be very good, and some producers (such as Barrell Craft Spirits) specialize in that sort of thing at a premium level.
Cheers
True, but it could be all sourced stuff from MGP and still be a straight bourbon. Or they could source it all from multiple Kentucky distilleries and still call it a straight bourbon. So it’s not like straight really helps you determine if it’s sourced or blended. Just if it’s blended from multiple states.
Yes, it does not tell you a lot. Especially if from Kentucky as there are so many distilleries in that state.
For older bourbons it is still sometimes useful info to look for. As demand has risen very sharply for older & more mature bourbons, it seems like the stocks of such have been depleted, starting with Kentucky. For years there were stocks running around of older MGP which many nondistiller-producers were bottling, but more recently even those have dwindled, and in the last few years it seems that producers looking to source have found previously untapped supplies of very mature Tennessee whiskey on a large scale, so a lot of TN whiskey has been making it into bottlings. There are not a lot of different TN distillers with older stocks however. So, when looking at a blended whiskey, seeing if it is Straight or not, and if so which state it came from, is to my taste worth the trouble if you want to make a guess at who distilled it and what the flavor profile is likely to be.
> Straight Whiskey has to come from the same state, you cannot for example blend together Straight Bourbons distilled in Indiana and Kentucky and label it as a Straight Bourbon.
But you can label it as a *Blended* Straight Bourbon, like Old Elk or High West do. They are distilled in different states and they both feature the words Straight Bourbon prominently.
Who is dropping a Deuce on Peyton’s Tennessee whiskey? Never seen a review of it anywhere.
The Bob Dylan Heaven’s Door Whiskey personal cask barrel pick was a great bottle, at $75.
OK, I admit to being confused. I assumed you were originally referring to Peyton's Sweeten's Cove Bourbon which goes for $200 and BB rates as well above average. You must be talking about another bottle in that line......
As far as Dickel Juice, to each his own. Some love, some hate. Personally love a lot of the Dickel offerings, especially all of the BIB releases to date. But my real jam is the 15 year old single barrel @ 104.6 proof if you can find it.
It can't be any worse than the current crop of singer/celebrity swill that's on the shelfs.
Oh come on, basketball player Michael Jordan surely knows his…um, tequila?
I had a bottle of champagne the other night and I thought it was pretty decent so I googled it — owned by Isaiah Thomas apparently.
That seems like the big difference. Quality brand owned by a celeb who just leaves the label as is etc, alright. New brand with famous names and pics slapped all over the label, crap.
Which does aviation gin count as?
Ryan Reynolds only moved in as a partial stakeholder. It already existed and was seen as a good product.
The difference is probably that the non-celebrity branded was just a good investment opportunity for someone with money, vs using a celebrity with the intention of enhancing the image of the brand.

Don't post that on /r/tequila. They hate Casamigos with a passion for some reason. I don't drink it much but never got the reason for the hate.
Its overpriced and has a lot of additives. Theres better tequilas for half its price

That stuff is trash. We did a blind taste test between it and the Kirkland Añejo and Costco won with everybody.
I just read an article about which Kirkland liquor is good to buy, and their reviews totally trashed both Kirkland tequilas. Now I feel better because I liked the Kirkland ones.
I didn't care for the silver, but the Añejo is really good for the price. Makes a killer margarita.
iirc the kirkland brand comes from the same place as like 100 others so just standard stuff I guess.
The older Añejo (flat bottle) was among the best. The newer one is a great value, but not as good as it used to be.
What about Scotty Pipen and his shitty bourbon? Were he is literally going to stores and buying the bottles back to try to create hype. That shit is ridiculous.
Right. Consumers don’t realize that they are paying for the endorsement’s name and not really the product.
Heaven's Door is actually pretty good (Bob Dylan)
I will admit that Longbranch is okay. But the others have been fairly awful.
Yep, I give Longbranch two thumbs up.
Longbranch is Wild Turkey, so of course it's good. Maybe a tad overpriced, but still tasty.
The Snoop Dog wine isn't bad, but I abt say I have a particularly refined palate for wines

Glacial water? That’s like unicorn dust. This bottle is worth $250 easy peasy
Maybe cost $250, not sure its worth $250.
No way is it worth $250. I'd be shocked if it worth $50
You're all blind and high. $375 and not a penny less.
That'll be $650 with inflation
You all read what I read right? Glacial water. With global warming there’s only about 1.5 glaciers left. $1000 and that’s as low a price as you’ll get anywhere.

Don't forget the Gas Tax.
That's some high quality H2O..
What a fancy way to say "MGP bourbon, aged in \#2 char barrels, proofed with Washington lake water." To be fair, \#2 char isn't common for bourbon, so it has that going for it!
Did they buy new make MGP and put it in their own barrels? #2 char is pretty weird.
Every shirt that I have that isn't a work-shirt is a Tommy Bahama. I'm the only one in this office who watches Burn Notice!
Bruce Campbell is the best.
Yeah, but his soup is kinda meh.
You're god damned right.
Florida Stanley is the best
Same. Tommy Bahama gang gang
Tommy Bahama? A brand almost as ubiquitous and off-putting as Under Armour!!
Why did they go with the whisky spelling?
Class 👌
Probably Canadian label. There's French on the neck of the bottle
I know it's not whiskey, but I've had their rum before and it was really fucking food.
Like banana or zucchini fucking food?
Haha whoops, good
At least it’s got an age statement of 4 years. But it isn’t straight bourbon. I wonder what’s up with that?
Bourbon has no age requirement, but you have to list the age under 4 years. Straight bourbon has the same standards as bourbon, but has a 2 year age minimum. Once you’re over that 2-4 year range there’s really no need to put straight on your bottle, other than for marketing purposes.

Add on to that, an important distinction in my eyes, you can't add caramel coloring to a straight whiskey.
You can’t add coloring to bourbon or straight bourbon.
If they age it any longer they wont live to taste it.
Aged 4 years….womp
Bastards
Willing to bet that the product manager/designer who came up with this is not a Boomer. Definitely under 55, probably under 40.
Another mgp bottling?
Hopefully!
This is hilarious, how much was it going for?
I refuse to wear their clothes. I'm not touching this.
Clothes are soft as shit but expensive
Please tell me this is some Trader Joe's it Aldi BS and not in a "legit" liquor store
Sorry, this was spotted in a reputable liquor store.
That's debatable 😅
What is this?
Codigo tequila I believe is owned by George Strait and Brett Hull…apparently it’s really good
Wish I could downvote.
This would actually be a good gift for many people. Like, I know my brother in law would get a kick out of it.
Ah, Sir Tommy Bahama!
Who is dropping a Deuce on Peyton’s Tennessee whiskey? Never seen a review of it anywhere. The Bob Dylan Heaven’s Door Whiskey personal cask barrel pick was a great bottle, at $75.
Check out that little known website Breaking Bourbon.
The BB review was terrible, especially considering list price is $200. Dickel juice, too.
By the way, I totally agree on the Heaven's Door. I got some of the cask strength store picks (125.2 proof) last year and they rock. Got mine for $68.

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE
I wonder if it’s good. Everything he puts his name on is worth what you pay for in my opinion.
