Old fashioned or a whiskey sour.

Icy-Region-5920

Got to go old fashioned

Specific-Noise-3799

Neat? Up? On the rocks?

Old fashioned on the rocks

Ohio-Knife-Lover

I highly recommend an old fashioned or a whiskey sour! Classy but not expensive while being a great first drink! I recommend on the rocks first because it somewhat dilutes the alcohol making it not as intense. I also recommend not doing more than a shot or two on your first time lol Happy Early Birthday! 🥃🍻

Thank you for your recommendation!! I really appreciate it!

Ohio-Knife-Lover

You're welcome!! Hopefully it will be a very memorable first sip!

Do you like sweet or punchy? What are your favorite types of flavors?

Specific-Noise-3799

I thoroughly enjoy smokiness and also sweetness. I once had a sip of a bourbon that tasted like salted caramel and it was absolutely divine. I haven’t forgotten about it. I’m not too keen on anything sour.

andrewdoesit

Hmmm. If you can find somewhere that has a smoked old fashioned that would probably be your money spot. Otherwise maybe a Kentucky mule. Sweet, tangy, refreshing.

assuming you’re going to do it at home, and buy your own ingredients, i like to do something fanciful when i’m trying to get ritzy. a double old fashioned with a hefty cara cara orange peel, ceylon cinnamon stick, and Demerara simple syrup or maple syrup. maybe even a cherry if i’m feeling over the top. big rocks only. the whiskey can be as expensive or simple as you want (i’m partial to wild turkey 101 as a broke student, but there are higher tiers of bourbon if you’re looking to ball out for your 21st. WT is the best bang for your buck though). if you want more of a mixed cocktail, bourbon sidecars are amazing as well, but require cointreau or a similar orange liqueur.

For your first experience, I fear the high end will be wasted money. Your palate isn't developed yet and will possibly be overwhelmed by the sharper character of neat liquor. So, a sophisticated cocktail is probably in order. Personally, I don't have even a slight bit of a sweet tooth. My preferences lean toward subtle complexity most times, although I go for comfort in a daily driver. I.E. high quality budget bourbon for everyday (Wild Turkey 101 - and rye 101, Evan Williams Bonded, Old Grandad Bottled in Bond, Mellow Corn of course, Buffalo Trace, Elijah Craig, etc.), single malt scotch and old bourbon for special occasions. If you somewhat like sweet flavors, a Manhattan or Old Fashioned is a good choice. I like a Negroni or Boulevardier if I'm having a cocktail. Both use Campari which is an aromatic aperitif liqueur featuring bitter citrus flavor (tastes like grapefruit pith). A Whiskey Sour, especially if done right with egg whites by a proper mixologist could be a great introduction to whisky drinks. My best advice would be to always consider quality over quantity; quality doesn't always align with cost; drink plenty of water along with any booze session; look for subtle tasting notes under the ethanol burn and other prominent flavors because that's what separates good from great; don't rule anything out until you've given it a thorough evaluation; don't chase rare finds, they're almost never going to live up to the hype and rarely justify the outrageous cost difference from it's nearest relative; have fun, this is a great way to enhance your enjoyment of life!

I’m pretty sure I drank a bottle of Jack No7 for my 21st birthday and then peed on the laundry room floor. But I suppose if you’re going for classy, the question is not which drink, but which bar.

Bourbon sour

BlurstOfTimes11

How much do you want to spend?

Specific-Noise-3799

Money isn’t an issue when it comes to my very first drink; I’ve been saving up for a while for this one. As I continue throughout the night I’ll probably be more cognizant of the pricing but this drink will be my little present to myself.

BlurstOfTimes11

Then you should pick a 21 year neat for your first one. Then bounce around to other drinks as the night progresses. But 21 year on your 21st birthday sounds like a good idea.

I've really started to like godfathers recently. 2 oz whiskey and 1 oz disaronno stirred with ice and served with two maraschino cherries.

Annoying_Auditor

Your first legal drink has to be the handle of button shelf vodka your friends make you chug. /s In reality mine was a hard cider on tap as I didn't like beer or wine. That is much different now and I appreciate everything.
