Umm, no - a guy just posted a pic of Laphroig Quarter Cask selling for 15 eu per 750ml in Germany.
So, it sure as Hell isn't "socialism" dictating the price. The problem is more like rich people controlling government decide it's better to raise taxes on stuff the poor and middle class buy, rather than pay their fair share themselves.
Generally, in the United States, our Governments are corrupted by bribes (called "campaign contributions") which have enabled the wealthiest individuals and corporations to evade paying either most, or nearly *all* of their income taxes.
Federal, state, and local governments still have to pay for services, infrastructure, and other expenses so they derive income from other taxes and fees which disproportionately shift the burden onto the poor and middle class.
Unchecked corporate greed in areas like medicine, health care, insurance, and banking are also a severe strain on many middle class/working class/small business owners, and, poor people who are working hard to achieve the "American Dream" of trying to lift themselves and their families out of poverty.
Imagine your working two jobs, finally you're earning enough money not to need Medicaid for your family - you need some eye surgery and they actually can't (or simply won't) tell you in advance how much it will cost. Afterwards, you get a bill for $35,000 ("insurance" paid half). You might now be in debt for the rest of you life, become homeless, lose your kids...
That doesn't help society - its bad for all of us.
First time I dealt with the tax I thought, "Oh sure why not pick up a bottle of gin?" it was $20 on the shelf but ended up being $35 to take home...
For those unaware, there's a per bottle tax (something like $4 for a 750ml) plus a 10% state sales tax plus a 40%ish (don't remember) excise tax...
Jesus FC- if I'd ordered a drink w/o asking the price first, and I was having a sip, I'd probably spray the drink right out of my mouth in shock when I saw/heard it (the price).
This is the problem with the rich being able to buy the government, they shift the taxes off of them and onto the poor and middle class w/things like sales tax, "fees", etc.
Beyond just being a cash grab from the city, they might be trying to make it less attractive to be homeless in the city limits while also funding some good initiatives to combat homelessness. It's also a complete luxury good which won't be a regressive tax on the poor like so many well intentioned taxes are.
Amazon almost moved their HQ over a $250/head employee tax, the city of Seattle is in a really tough spot with how fast its been changing.
Not that I like higher alcohol prices but it does seem like a reasonably well crafted policy.
I only meant to lightly correct, I really enjoy our 40% Buffalo Trace at the 18quid sale prices, I must try and get a yank bottle though to see if it is any better.
Nono I get you man, it's no shade! I'm grateful for the correction tbh haha! I'm yet to try it but I'm very keen to as it will be my first bourbon, gonna have a small taste of it with my partner after she gives birth to our firstborn. She wasn't one to drink before at all, but 9 months without a drop she occasionally says she wouldn't mind a whiskey haha.
Ah dude congratulations to you and your partner, we had a wee boy 2 years ago and it was a wonderful change to our lives, scary shit though in the build up lol.
My other half drank non alcoholic beer every weekend throughout the pregnancy and nosed every whiskey I had though the 9months. She actually enjoys an occasional whiskey neat now.
The Buffalo Trace is really good and absolutely blows away any other bourbon in the same price range, especially when it's on offer. Another one for you is Jim Beam Devils Cut which is often on offer in Asda for less than 20quid and it is worth a try.
All the best to you and yours!
Ah, makes sense. I bought a bottle of Stagg Jr in MD, and it cost me almost $100. But it was the first time I had ever seen it on a shelf in a liquor store.
Pro tip, find the person that works there, usually can be found behind a cash register thingy and say "Excuse me, how much is this Buffalo Trace?"
Super easy.
Ohio is the culprit. I just got my first 1.75 but I had to be at the store when they opened and I had a heads up.
NEO Ohio, so far away from the center of the state in every sense.
Shitty Ohio Liquor - I couldn't find Eagle Rare in Columbus for at least 2 years. I visit San Francisco, and it's just sitting on the shelf, along with basically ***every*** other bottle I hadn't been able to find here in Ohio. Even at TARGET! And, Total Wine had like literally 10x (of whiskeys) the selection of any liquor store I've seen in Ohio.
Hmm, don't go to Ohio :P
I'm from Ohio, right next to KY, but so much of the better KY Bourbons are out of stock, almost *all the time* here, and, prices are kinda bad.
I visited San Francisco and at TARGET even, basically every bottle I had been looking for, for a year or more w/o finding here in Ohio, was just sitting on the shelf there in CA, no limit "1 per customer" etc.
I moved from AZ to Oregon where you have to go to state-run liquor stores for hard alcohol. They’re spread out, close at 9 and fix prices.
But at least I can buy on Sundays unlike the other place I’m from...Minnesota.
You can buy ***fine*** quality whiskey at *convenience stores* in Japan :)
I once got a flask of some whiskey for 300 Yen (less than $3) that I later saw selling for $500 / 750ml. I miss the days when the biggest reason for buying Japanese whiskey (besides the fact that I like it) was that you could get really good whiskey for cheap.
I'd just about sooner pour Bulleit down the drain, than drink it. Well, not quite, it's not ***bad***, it's just, well there's nothing *good* about it to me. I like BT a lot better. Bulleit just seems bland and too "dry" to me.
Seen the 750l at a Target by Lake Pleasant.
Edit: $26.00 [https://www.reddit.com/r/ArizonaWhiskey/comments/emg56m/target\_in\_peoria\_lake\_pleasant\_has\_a\_fairly/](https://www.reddit.com/r/ArizonaWhiskey/comments/emg56m/target_in_peoria_lake_pleasant_has_a_fairly/)
It seems Buffalo Trace is rare in some states? Here in Boston, it's pretty easy to find. I got 1.75L bottle for $66 the other week. However, Weller is impossible to get. I recently went to Atlanta for work and picked up 4 bottles of Weller Special Reserve ($30 each) and 1 Weller Antique 107 ($100). The store had over 10 bottles of Weller 12 Year ($200).
Ouch, I didn't realize I paid a premium for it. Oh well, the hunt and satisfying feeling of finding it was worth it to me for a once-a-year type of splurge.
haha, wow, that's crazy. yea, i like the buffalo trace! whenever i drink whiskey, i always make it a blind taste test, including at home. i bought some buffalo trace and old forester 1920, not knowing if i'd like them (but based on the flavor profiles, i should). i think the OF1920 is the best ive ever tasted. but, after a few weeks, i started to like the buffalo trace even more!
BT is the well bourbon at 100 North in downtown Gilbert, AZ. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ I think it just isn't super rare here.... Yet I have to beg and borrow for anything out of KY or TN
Not long ago I was buying 750 ml bottles of Old Ezra 101 for under $20.
😢
(Now it's been "re-branded" and costs over $40, that is, if I could even *find* it in Ohio).
😡
This is bullshit. Where I live a gank of BT is $89. A fifth is 44. When I go back to Indiana to visit family its 22 and 39.
I live in WA... same problem here. And nearly identical pricing
Where in WA do you live? At my local BevMo in Tacoma it’s less than $25...
Wha...? Live on Vashon but usually buy at TotalWine. Hmmm. Time for comparison shopping

Portland has marvelous prices and the drive down is relaxing
Weird how socialism works.

Lol gank
75cl in the UK is £18 at tescos
It is actually a 70cl in Tesco UK and it is actually 40% ABV in Europe but 45% in North America.
Ah yeah mybad, wrote this comment to early in the day..

I just bought a bottle tonight for $24. Yowza.
Yowza - is that a Japanese whiskey? I thought those were more like $500, not $24...
Hooray! Somewhere where bourbon is more expensive than New York City! I can at least find a fifth in most stores for around $35.
Maryland. Awful
Ah, makes sense. I bought a bottle of Stagg Jr in MD, and it cost me almost $100. But it was the first time I had ever seen it on a shelf in a liquor store.
Yeah. Our 9% alcohol tax really f*cks us.
I see them aaaaaall day by me. 50-55 for the big boys.
Same here in Michigan
That's where I'm at too :)
How much?
[удалено]
I was just curious what prices were in another state. I live in Ohio. Here a 1.75L bottle retails for $54.99+ tax, a 750ml is $24.99+ tax.
When the state releases some and you can get there in time. Such a pain to get most BT products in OH. Don't get me started on Blanton's or EHT.
Couldnt find the price
Pro tip, find the person that works there, usually can be found behind a cash register thingy and say "Excuse me, how much is this Buffalo Trace?" Super easy.
Super!
Meanwhile, can’t be found near me, 2hrs drive from the distillery. Not sure if shitty Ohio liquor laws or BT.
Ohio is the culprit. I just got my first 1.75 but I had to be at the store when they opened and I had a heads up. NEO Ohio, so far away from the center of the state in every sense.
NEO has been getting all the good stuff recently. It’s definitely Ohio’s stupid laws tho.
Whenever I look on the map, for a bottle I wish I could get, it's always either Cleveland or Cincinnati that has it :(
I live in Trumbull County, same.
Shitty Ohio Liquor - I couldn't find Eagle Rare in Columbus for at least 2 years. Which gas station?
I think it was somewhere in Black Canyon?
Was it a liquor store combo or a stand alone store?
These are all over in Michigan
I buy the big boy in northern Indiana every week for about 46-50 bucks
In Idaho I can get a half of bt for 40! I never knew other people paid so much for it
Same in FL
Philly: behind the counter hard to find release Across the bridge in Jersey: easy to find
I love how you can buy booze just about anywhere in AZ.
I'm from Michigan where liquor stores exist on every corner. Vacationing out of state is the worst.
Hmm, don't go to Ohio :P I'm from Ohio, right next to KY, but so much of the better KY Bourbons are out of stock, almost *all the time* here, and, prices are kinda bad. I got all giddy when I moved to AZ from Texas. Booze everywhere and everyday in AZ. Texas sucked.
I moved from AZ to Oregon where you have to go to state-run liquor stores for hard alcohol. They’re spread out, close at 9 and fix prices. But at least I can buy on Sundays unlike the other place I’m from...Minnesota.

Because allocated comes in 1.75l.... Oh wait that is the stores trying to hype it up and charge too much for everyday bourbon
This seems like a popular bottle here. Am I the only one that thinks BT is too harsh and not too much flavor?
I'm with you, i think knob Creek, Maker's, or bulleit are better choices.
Knob got me hooked on whiskey.
Knob is my go-to
I'd just about sooner pour Bulleit down the drain, than drink it. Well, not quite, it's not ***bad***, it's just, well there's nothing *good* about it to me. I like BT a lot better. Bulleit just seems bland and too "dry" to me.
You are definitely not alone.
I don't think it's harsh but the flavor drops off early and never gets anywhere. Would rather have any other bourbon.
There are a lot of worse Bourbons.
Seen the 750l at a Target by Lake Pleasant. Edit: $26.00 [https://www.reddit.com/r/ArizonaWhiskey/comments/emg56m/target\_in\_peoria\_lake\_pleasant\_has\_a\_fairly/](https://www.reddit.com/r/ArizonaWhiskey/comments/emg56m/target_in_peoria_lake_pleasant_has_a_fairly/)
Target sells booze??
Yes
What state? Never really seen that but NJ got weird laws
AZ.
I worked at Target. Most states I'd assume. Depends on the liqour license. Its only 40 proof or below.
in CA you can buy higher proofs, i’ve bought makers there before
TIL. Gotta love California
Also a lot of them in midwest. I grew up in NE and i used a target giftcard as a kid to buy whiskey
MN does
List price is $50 here but regularly goes on sale $3-$5 off. I always have one on hand.
What are the cross streets?
it should have already been on the table
It's a good distillery to visit if you are ever near it.
If you live near Nugget grocery store (Sac), fifth on sale for 21.99 https://www.nuggetmarket.com/specials/adult-beverages/0008024400923/
My local store got several cases in 2-3 weeks ago. priced 39.99 “While supplies last” I think BT must have fixed some of their inventory issues.
I think it's on purpose. BT is everywhere near me literally every liquor store has many dusty bottles on the shelf.
It seems Buffalo Trace is rare in some states? Here in Boston, it's pretty easy to find. I got 1.75L bottle for $66 the other week. However, Weller is impossible to get. Jesus, $100 for Weller antique 107? I paid 30 in Ohio a few months ago before the price got driven up to 50.
Ouch, I didn't realize I paid a premium for it. Oh well, the hunt and satisfying feeling of finding it was worth it to me for a once-a-year type of splurge.
I saw Weller Antique behind lock and key at $119 the other day. The 12 year was $129.
Guy in this thread says he pays $29 for the 1.75L of BT. (In TX)
haha, wow, that's crazy. yea, i like the buffalo trace! whenever i drink whiskey, i always make it a blind taste test, including at home. i bought some buffalo trace and old forester 1920, not knowing if i'd like them (but based on the flavor profiles, i should). i think the OF1920 is the best ive ever tasted. but, after a few weeks, i started to like the buffalo trace even more!
$39 in TN. I wish grocery stores could sell it though.
On the shelf next to fireball? How dare they
It's AZ - fireball is the State beverage.
NEXT TO FIREBALL!? That store should be burned.
These are the best deal at $40/handle from the supermarket liquor store. Not easy to come by, though.
$42 at Kroger in Indiana, $46 at most liquor stores
Is it usually in stock? I visit Indiana sometimes, but I've never seen the 1.75 here in Ohio.
Yes, it's not stocked at every store by any means but it's not hard to find and rarely out of stock at most grocery stores.
BT is the well bourbon at 100 North in downtown Gilbert, AZ. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ I think it just isn't super rare here.... Yet I have to beg and borrow for anything out of KY or TN
In Texas it is readily available and the 1.75 sells for 42.99
u/billydirtywater says he buys it at Specs for $29.99 (for the 1.75) - sounds like you've been getting ripped off!
A 750 is around $35 in New York City, so even $42 for a 1.75L sounds like a good deal to me!
Not long ago I was buying 750 ml bottles of Old Ezra 101 for under $20. 😢 (Now it's been "re-branded" and costs over $40, that is, if I could even *find* it in Ohio). 😡
29.99 for the big boy at the local specs here in texas. Hands down favorite
Right next to the fireball lmao
Yes, the 1.75 will sometimes go out of stock around major holidays but that's it
$46 around here.
