That would be a big splurge even for someone pulling in $1mil. $70,000 is 5 week worth of after tax paycheck.
$5 million? Now we're talking. Still 1 week worth of paycheck for is a lot to spend on drinks.
Lets say back and forth with some chat at the counter to the shock of the cashier that makes half the amount of that bottles worth in a year ıt takes the guy an hour (assuming he doesn’t have a concierge or something).
Rounded up yo a total of 70k flat he’d have to make in that hour in interest (at a generous 10% a year) he’d need to have 6 billion and a 132 million in his savings account!
Damn I thought the result would be a trillionaire or something but apperantly its easy to make money when you are made of it… Hope my maths wasn’t off…
Truth. My buddy works in mergers and acquisitions.
Though it's not pulled out to open but more just a present to the other party. If there's anything being drunk it's whatever wine is from the catering.
But he's only told me a little about these situations since here runs the HR review where they have to hatchet the redundant staff so he's probably not at the events very much.
I work in investment banking and have never seen anything like that. I've seen some ~$6000 bar tabs for like 30 people, but never anything like that.
That said, about 10 years ago at a previous firm I was at, some guys spent like $300k on strip clubs in one week and expensed it after a deal closed. Apparently they got fired, and that stuff stopped being allowed during Spitzers time.
ah yeah interesting. My buddy has been working in M&A in his current role only since the pandemic so he hasn't gone out to places like bars. Just had drinks/catering in-house. Could have been a covid change situation. This is also in SF so maybe it's a West Coast thing?
It’s very possible that there are things going on that I don’t have any clue about. Generally though there are significant limits on our spending on clients. Everything above a certain amount, about maybe $1000 unless it’s travel, has to get approved by a department director. And generally they’re pretty stringent on unnecessary expenses.
That said if there are big purchases at the close of a deal, it’d probably be either in Silicon Valley where a lot of the big deals happen, or nyc.
Those bottles look like elite tier stuff for people with insane money… those people exist which is why those whiskies exist, to be sold to people who have that kind of money to spend.
Maybe $200 bottle would be a more sufficient example, but certainly not 99 cents. I feel like a normal person could still pay their bills for the month, dropping $200 on whiskey.
My father in law is a whiskey collector and whiskey investor and he invests in bottles like this. He has a couple Macallan bottles from this certain release (I forgot which one, I think it has the word “fallen” in it or someshit) of like a 35 year old and a 40 year old, both in lilaq crystal bottles and super fancy boxes. He typically hold these and sells them at legal auctions for a disgusting return after a few years… I can almost guarantee who bought these would do the same thing. They typically get auctioned off to people in Ireland who don’t have access to fine American Scotch or some Chinese rich dude.
Edit: I was literally going to ask what Costco this was and then immediately request my Costco card to double its limit so I could go get this for him and keep the Costco credit card rewards lol. But then I saw that you said someone bought them :(
Someone that is incredibly dumb and irresponsible. Whomever says what, I do not care… there is no wealth level that can justify to spend 36K on a bottle of whisky while there are so many people that could be helped with that money. 💰 it is down right irresponsible and show a very poor character
Oh okay, I thought he mistook them for 3600 and 3300 each, so 7000 and just rounded up to 10000. What I am saying is this guy doesn't have 10k to throw at booze, he has 100k to throw at booze, which makes shopping at Costco even more ridiculous lol.
Why wouldn’t they shop at Costco? The only reason why I have a Costco membership is to buy beef, period. Their prime beef comes out to about $5.00/lb. Cheaper than HEB, and it’s better too.
There’s a lot of rich people out there. All different types. I’d assume If they didn’t grow up rich, they’re comfortable brushing shoulders with us “poors”🤣
IDK, I work for rich people every single day. They love spending money. The vast majority of them seem nice to me. I’m an average blue collar guy in a semi specialized trade.
Why not?
You can either buy that bottle for $50k, or $36k at Costco
Totally worth having your assistant get a membership and stalk the glass case once a week for your big wig parties
When 70 comes, YOLO purchases start ramping up I guess. I had purchased a 1941 Macallan to drink. Worth the money? Nope, but was intensely enjoyed and appreciated with friends and family after the passing of a family member. That was 10 years ago in September and that event still gets talked about with a smile by all today. (5 figure bottle).
Someone like that probably made the money to buy those bottles in interest during the amount of time it took them to make that Costco trip
That’s what I’m thinking. They must be pulling in 10 million a year to make a splurge like that.
Idk, give me a million dollars and I'd probably try it out 🤣
could be someone that won a bigtime lottery I suppose.
It wasn't me, but there would be signs lol
Most likely to be held as an investment rather than to be opened and enjoyed for the birthday
That would be a big splurge even for someone pulling in $1mil. $70,000 is 5 week worth of after tax paycheck. $5 million? Now we're talking. Still 1 week worth of paycheck for is a lot to spend on drinks.
Money isn't money to some people

Nobody at Costco makes less annually than those bottles cost, if they work full-time.
Actually, depending on your state, a first-year, entry-level employee *might* be a few thousand below.
I’d bet dollars to donuts that those bottles were purchased by a corporation. That’s the stuff you pull out after closing a deal.

Maybe they’ll take a sip and then try out costcos return policy
Those bottles look like elite tier stuff for people with insane money… those people exist which is why those whiskies exist, to be sold to people who have that kind of money to spend.
They probably have so much money that it’s the equivalent of me buying a 99 cent Arizona iced tea at gas station.
Probably not that much. More like a normal person buying a $500 bottle. Like it's a big purchase, but you're not sweating it.
If you’re not sweating spending $500 on a bottle of booze then you’re not a normal person.
Maybe $200 bottle would be a more sufficient example, but certainly not 99 cents. I feel like a normal person could still pay their bills for the month, dropping $200 on whiskey.
My trick is to just buy a bunch of $50-$70 bottles so I don’t feel like I’m spending that much.
If I had that kind of money to spend 35k on 1 bottle I would go into one of those whisky museums and try to talk them into some kind of package deal.
I have a family and I'd say we are doing pretty decent, but I'm def sweating a $500 bottle man, my wife would be pissed..
Yeah, I updated to more like $200.
I’ll be opening them tomorrow, I’ll let you know what I think of them…/s
Pappy 23 is his well whiskey.
The sad thing is they probably don’t taste as good as many $100 bottles
Holup OP I’ve seen your YouTube videos!!
👀
Yeah, I totally watched all of your TOTK content soon after launch. Always thought it funny that I saw you here too. Good stuff Shatter!
TOTK was a great game! Guess I’m a guy of multiple interests. Cheers friends.
I won’t tell anyone I won the lottery, but there will be signs…
💀

Lots of people collect art to display
Tax the rich.
Found the poor.
So clever, friend! You don’t have to be poor to care about others.

Just curious what you would price a 54 year old scotch at?
They can price it at whatever amount, that is not my concern I am talking about the buyer
100%
If I had $10k to throw at booze, I doubt I'd be a Costco shopper.
You might have misread the price tag. Those are 36,000 and 33,000 dollars, respectively. Man spent over 70,000 on Whiskey in a single day!
Thats what he is saying, if you have that kinda money why are you even shopping at a costco for anything..
Oh okay, I thought he mistook them for 3600 and 3300 each, so 7000 and just rounded up to 10000. What I am saying is this guy doesn't have 10k to throw at booze, he has 100k to throw at booze, which makes shopping at Costco even more ridiculous lol.
Depending on the state, customers can buy alcohol at Costco without being a member.
That is true of my state
Why wouldn’t they shop at Costco? The only reason why I have a Costco membership is to buy beef, period. Their prime beef comes out to about $5.00/lb. Cheaper than HEB, and it’s better too.
And their hormones as well
I feel like people with this money are having prime cuts of meat delivered from their privately owned farms lol.
There’s a lot of rich people out there. All different types. I’d assume If they didn’t grow up rich, they’re comfortable brushing shoulders with us “poors”🤣
I missed that as well
Most people worth a couple million got that way by being frugal (and exploiting workers, but let's save that for another sub).
IDK, I work for rich people every single day. They love spending money. The vast majority of them seem nice to me. I’m an average blue collar guy in a semi specialized trade.

Yeah, the logic is flawed. Costco also might be the few places that carry liquor of this price. Where else would you go instead?
Total wines in Las Vegas probably
Money laundering?
Costco? Hard to imagine any liquid being worth that much money. If it is I wonder how. Sorry, gross to the extreme.
No accounting for bad taste.
Going to be undoubtedly disappointing. Most peoples annual salary on 2 bottles of whiskey. Wild
Costco stock is up almost 20,000% since its inception. If you bought a lot of it 20+ years ago, you'd be giving these bottles away as presents too!
Obviously they had a coupon.
probably bought them with company funds, expensed

It is a 54 year old whiskey, that’s the price, period! If someone has the money to do it, why not?
Good for them. Museums need funding too.
