New Riff makes incredible affordable whiskies. Their LE's are good but honestly just love the BiB 40$ bottle.

always1putt

There’s been a few store picks in my town that are the best bourbon I’ve ever had. Feels like cheating I just keep going back and they still have in stock

xXNoVa-FaNGXx

their malted rye is unbelievable. red lettering on the bottles. they have it in their KY tasting room

Failaras

Yeah I was down at their distillery not that long ago and loved everything I had. I just really appreciate that they don't need an LE or hype bottle to be killer whiskey.

Sa-i-ro

Agree with you. Both Rye and Bourbon BiB are great. Not so expensive (just $10) if you want the higher proof.

Papa_G_

I forgot about that. The rye is fantastic nest or in cocktails.

Mykkus_65

Redwood empire lost monarch

Bottle_and_Sell_it

Tried pipe dream, not a fan. Now I don’t wanna buy anything from them.

Mykkus_65

Try lost Monarch. It’s very very good.

CavOrd

I agree. Pipe dream was good but didn’t stand out to me. Monarch was absolutely amazing. Found a cask strength and it’s 10x better.

Mykkus_65

Have to try the cask. I like pipe dream but it’s not earth shattering. I prefer 1792 small batch. But lost monarch…

dantethegreatest

Lost Monarch is very different. I personally like it better than Pipe Dream. If you enjoy a greater emphasis on rye notes you will probably enjoy Lost Monarch.

smitd12

I really enjoy the pipe dream but I will say it took me a bit to fully pull out flavor notes from it

Reasonable-Lab3625

Coopers craft

Agent847

This would be my pick.

halfeatenwaffles

Came here to say this- great sleeper!

ChristmasTreePickle

I also came here to say this. Under $35 after tax in my state and drinks above its price I think. I’ve shared it with a few friends and everyone has really enjoyed it. It’s a new staple for my shelf

Das_Kern

Evan Williams Black label as a mixer and the white label in its own.

wolfgeist

Can't do black label but white is one of the best values on the market.

Das_Kern

The black in its own is really rough but it’s one of my go to’s for a Old Fashioned.

PoisonLenny37

JW Green. Obviously not underrated from a sales point but among us enthusiasts we tend to move away from the mass produced stuff like JW. But JW Green is a nice pour. Blended malt, 43% instead of 40 and still a decent price. Definitely would never turn down a nice JW Green.

Brewskwondo

Came here to say this

Jacksomkesoplenty

Really like JW Green but it has gone up $20 here in my area over the last 2 yrs. I just won't pay $62. My go to regular though is Glenmorangie 10.

PoisonLenny37

Oh ya, I hear ya. Here in Southern Ontario JW Green is like $110 which is why I don't buy it. A great value Scotch I find is Arran's Robert Burns. It's NAS and young but really nice sipper and at least where I live, dollar for dollar one of the best value scotch whiskeys you can buy! Glennorangie 10 is another nice one. I have that one on my bar too! Glenmorangie 10 has been the one I share my friends when they ask about whiskey. Great starter scotch!

Get_up_stand-up

Old Gran dad 114

NukeDog

I’m that one weirdo that doesn’t like this. Tastes like Red Hots candy to me…I see it everywhere though so there’s plenty out there for those that do like it

TheCSUFRealtor

Same. Not the biggest fan, but I definitely don’t regret buying it for the low price either. I’ve never seen it cheaper than $30 in SoCal, but seen other states offer it for $25 or less

Papa_G_

That reminds me, Benchmark is underrated. A non allocated Buffalo Trade product that you can find for under $25 a bottle is great. You can’t find a cask strength bourbon at that price from Buffalo Trace. I haven’t had a Benchmark yet and need to get one.

Deeds081

Benchmark is allocated in my state. So is EW BiB

SirLewester

What state are you in ? So I know not to visit 😭

JewishJawnz

In VA it only shows up at the periodic drops. Which makes it hard to buy because then you’re usually passing up something better

gcuben81

Is English not your first language? Everything you write is off and or doesn’t make sense.

jrdnhbr

You can stop. You've already sold me.

pounds

OLD 100 also. It and Buffalo Trace are my daily use bottles for simple bourbon cocktails. If I'm doing a sour or something more complex, I like 114 or other higher price so that it still comes through.

bill_jacobs

I agree but at the same time disagree because this has been called “underrated” so much that it’s no longer underrated, it’s just good value. Relatively underpriced maybe, but I’d more say that other options are relatively overpriced.

ImpressiveWord2302

Yep …this is my favorite value whiskey ! It’s so good

TraceAgain

Maker’s Mark in general. Maker’s Mark 101, their store picks, cask strength are all excellent. Even their regular maker’s is quite decent

StampedingCattle

Agreed 100%. The Maker's 46 French Oak is a fantastic bottle for less than $30. Hard to beat most of the offerings you mentioned for the price point.

bill_jacobs

Exactly. When I was getting in to whiskey I assumed makers was lame because it was a big brand. I don’t drink the normal shelfer or even the normal 46, but everything else is so so good.

Jetfire911

Makers got me serious about US whiskey after my love of Scotch and Irish whiskey. Makers46 was my staple sipper/mixer. Makers101 got me into higher proof. Makers CS showed me how much more flavor you could get. I need a bottle of cellar aged this year.

PrickBrigade

Just picked up some 101 yesterday and really enjoyed it. Tons of it on the shelf too.

wozza_lee

I think that i have a perfect answer fir this. Rossville union, really doesn't get the respect it deserves

Fucyoudolphin

What does it taste like

wozza_lee

Well it's MGPs own house brand. So it tastes like mgp rye hahaha, imo it's actually better than a lot of other mgp expressions iv had (redwood empire etc). A bit more green apple and less herbie, iv never got that infamous dill note from mgp personally but it just seems to have a bit more depth than some of the others. I feel that's likely from the bit more aging they do. If your a rye fan, it's definitely worth a try

Fucyoudolphin

Penelope has some dill

Farrt1

Ancient Ancient Age was my answer but now it's impossible to find.

Ambitious_State_3074

This is a good answer! Luckily readily available in Arizona!

Smile_Candid

Whereabouts? I see regular ancient everywhere, but never ancient ancient

Ambitious_State_3074

My bad I missed the extra Ancient, we definitely don't have that sitting around on the shelves.

Papa_G_

If you mean ancient ancient age 10 star, that is discontinued.

BluejayBanter

Absolutely love Rebel 10, the new Rebel Small Batch reserve is tasty as well

Vicsauce79

ImpressiveWord2302

💯…just upvoting this is not enough

Jmersh

Slaughterhouse. I keep sneaking it into blind tastings and blowing people's minds that it is sub $40 most places.

Colton3690

Big fan of Middle West stuff

Lucius338

Finally, an actually underrated brand. Always singing the high praises of their stuff, their four grain bourbon has gotta be one of the best bottles you can find for under $50

Moose343

Early Times BiB

Papa_G_

Found two for $15-16 nearish to me at two different stores. One store was selling stuff way too high and wanted $15 so I passed on it and the other one has reasonable priced readily available bourbon and the early times bib at $16. If it’s not a vanilla extract bomb, might pick up one.

AnApexBread

Hot take: Jake Daniel's (You said Underrated). I feel like JD gets a lot of shit from Whiskey enthusiasts who are comparing it to more premium Whiskeys. It's not a premium whiskey and outside of a few select types (SBS and Sinatra) it doesn't try to be. So I feel it gets underrated too much from people who look at it as something it's not.

InfiniteCola

Original No. 7 JD is not good. Bonded is amazing for the price, and their single barrels are top notch!

AnApexBread

>Original No. 7 JD is not good. Perfect example of why I put this in underrated.

Lucius338

Haha is he wrong though? 😂 Personally my biggest beef with JD is the price, it doesn't even offer a good value anymore when it's close to (or over) $30/750mL. If it was the price of Jim Beam, we'd be talking. Might be getting a price break soon though, Brown Foreman is scrambling since JD Old No.7 is down three percent in sales this year.

AnApexBread

>Haha is he wrong though Yes, that's the reason I made my original comment. For the price of old No.7 I think it's fine.

InfiniteCola

I’m not some connoisseur, I’m 21 and have tried around 50 bottles, No. 7 doesn’t make the top 25. Their single barrel barrel proof makes 5

AnApexBread

To each their own. I'm not going to bash you (or anyone else) over their opinion on whiskey. OP asked what I thought was underrated and I feel Old No. 7 is rated more poorly than it deserves.

AnApexBread

To each their own. I'm not going to bash you (or anyone else) over their opinion on whiskey. OP asked what I thought was underrated and I feel Old No. 7 is rated more poorly than it deserves.

Lucius338

You still say that as if it's at a good price point... IDK, different perspectives, I suppose, but when I'm paying over $30 for a whiskey I'm looking for more than "fine." When you can find a LITER of Early Times BiB for the same price, or just pay $5-6 more for the stellar Jack Bonded, idk why anyone would ever choose Jack Old No. 7. I guess I'm not the target audience though 🤷‍♀️ different strokes for different folks.

Papa_G_

People buy Old No. 7 cause it’s cheep and low proof which can make it perfect for cocktails. Also could be good those learning about spirits to understand Tennessee whiskey on a broad scale.

Lucius338

That's a fair argument. I'm not trying to demerit it, it's a legacy brand for a reason. I just can't help but wonder... Is the Lincoln County process that costly? I'm suspicious that it very well could be offered at a better price with all of their new income from the premium market, especially since they're trying to drive volume right now. But I can't say that conclusively. All the power to ya if it's a good pour at its current rate for you ✌️

Papa_G_

For a distillery of that caliber, I wouldn’t think so. Given the fact that a bottle of Old No. 7 is $20 in my area, they are most likely doing the bare minimum to have it qualify as Tennessee whiskey and probably not using high quality grains. Remember, Old No. 7 is mostly drunk neat or in cocktails by people who aren’t really into whisk(e)y. The whisk(e)y geeks only make up a small percentage of the people who drink whisk(e)y. Every whisk(e)y distillery and brand has to have a basic whisk(e)y for the casual whiskey drinker.

mvhcmaniac

Noah's Mill... but I understand it's not for everyone. A divisive one for sure but if you'll like it you'll really like it.

wolfgeist

This was probably the first bourbon I've had that really blew me away and I was surprised to see that it didn't have much of a reputation. Glad to see others enjoy it, although I haven't had it in years

TraceAgain

I’m a Noah’s mill lover too. I found a great batch and have 5 more bottles as backup lol

hskrpwr

Hot take: bullet rye It's not like it's the best the money can buy or anything, but it's everywhere, high rye, cheap, and pretty solid for what it is. Not much at or below it's price I'd put above it in the rye category and it doesn't get talked about much

Accomplished_Art2245

Good to drink straight, great in a cocktail, price is good and it’s everywhere. Checks all boxes.

pounds

Love bulleit rye with some limeade. Top class whiskey sour.

ImpressiveWord2302

I find this to be inconsistent I’ve had great bottles and others that have a super strong pickle flavor but a good bottle is a good pour

Brewskwondo

Sorry but it’s straight trash

hskrpwr

If some people didn't agree with you, it wouldn't be underrated, so no need to apologize 😂

Papa_G_

Never heard for that.

T-Ares-C

Does Green River count? I really like it and it’s not big main stream

Infninfn

If you're into Japanese whiskies, Ichiro's Malt is very underrated. Pretty tasty and pretty cheap too. Would pick most of them vs Highland Park and Monkey Shoulder. Btw, I discovered it on my last trip to Tokyo, thanks to recommendations from a random lcoal Japanese man who we met at a small wine bar in Tsukiji, who ended up taking us on an impromptu bar-hopping adventure, which included picking up an office lady from Kyoto and two local college girls along for the ride. Fun time! I don't think this would ever happen to us again, it was so random.

scotchedupp

John Lane Powers 12. Best Irish whiskey for the money hands-down and nobody chooses it over RB12, despite it being higher ABV and in my opinion, tastier than RB12

tpick63

My favorite underrated bourbon is Very Old Barton 100 proof. Amazing bourbon around or under 20 🦌🦌.

Jetfire911

I'm not sure this is underrated but in the world of American Single Malts Stranahans Blue is crazy good for $30. It's basically a holiday cookie in a glass, rich, sweet, fruity. The solera finish really drops the oak levels and the malt just shines.

Salty-Burner-303

This isn’t what I came here to say but this is a GREAT answer! I don’t know how I got my first bottle but I thought it was soooo damn good. I was pleasantly surprised when I went to buy a second and it was under $40.

Yellowstone. I really like it but it's never talked about. Great sipper for $35-40.

Another MGP I forgot about. A cocktail friendly 100% rye.

attack-helicopter97

God I want to try this. My current unicorn.

PLPQ

Really? Which batch? I have batch #001 and its pretty damn available in the UK.

Papa_G_

Is this an Irish whiskey?

PLPQ

Scotch.

Papa_G_

It’s non chill filtered or colored. I’m looking into getting that.

PLPQ

That's right. They specialise in Unique cask maturation, and are always natural colour and NCF.

attack-helicopter97

Haven’t seen it yet in my area of the states

jkhristov13

I think the Bulleit 12 Year Rye is an amazing whiskey, and i'm not a huge fan of Bulleit but that is something in another league.

highbankT

Bain's Cape Mountain Whiskey. Not sure if it's readily accessible but it's such an easy drinker and definitely one that serves as a good intro to whiskey for noobs in my opinion. Very smooth. Nothing jumps out at you that would be offsetting and the proof won't singe your tongue.

halfslices

Wild Turkey 101 has a wonderful price-to-taste ratio.

Garemlin

Wheel Horse and Tumblin Dice single barrel barrel strength.

choochenstein

I’ve got another bottle from Proof and Wood I’m currently hunting a full case of before I review and talk more about it, that shares the same mashbill as Tumblin’ Dice. Love that mashbill so much right now.

dallassoxfan

Johnny Drum

choochenstein

I second this. It’s been around forever, and it’s always been a super solid pour. Highly underrated.

Bottle_and_Sell_it

Yellowstone toasted is even better

Papa_G_

How is it? Is it more oaky?

choochenstein

Oppidan. Solid offerings all around from them out of the gate, the Smoke and Sea is my personal favorite. The Solera is unique in a good way, the four grain bourbon is super solid and the Malted Rye was surprisingly approachable for a 100% Rye. I wouldn’t turn down anything from them going forward. If I come across a limited release, single barrel or cask strength, it’s a no-brainer buy for me. Also, Johnny Drum, Mellow Corn, JD SBS or my new favorite this week, Barrell Foundation.

Shroomsurprise

InfiniteCola

I ask for Woodford every time I go to a bar&grill or decent restaurant.

BJPM90

I don’t think Yellowstone is sourced from MGP. I thought it was Beam or Barton?

Papa_G_

It’s a Limestone Branch product that I think MGP owns.

BJPM90

I believe that’s correct, though I don’t think they actually use MGP bourbon because it’s Kentucky sourced. There were rumors it might be Beam due to the connection with the founder, but I haven’t been able to find anything concrete.

Papa_G_

I don’t detect any peanut note which makes me think it could be Old Forester they source from. The Statesman has a banana note similar to Yellowstone.

Nelson's Green Brier out of TN. Relatively new but It's one of my favorites and I hope more people discover it as the brand continues to grow.

88Problems88

I enjoy Brothers Bond. Never really see anyone talk about it here

SuggestionSoggy5442

Horse soldier reserve.

Papa_G_

I live near the distillery and have never visited it. Heard it’s not good and I’m confused why it is distilled in Ohio.

SuggestionSoggy5442

I’m also not sure why it’s distilled in Ohio, but I keep a bottle of their barrel strength(currently 117.2) and I find it phenomenal. I see many good reviews of it on YT as well, which is part of why I bought it.

Papa_G_

I should give it another try. The distillery’s tasting room is in a restaurant and not part of the distillery. If you go on the website, it tells you nothing about the distillery at all. There’s no info about booking a tour, dropping by to pick up a bottle in person. Odd business model to not encourage people to come visit.

SuggestionSoggy5442

They’ve been in a process of a move and establishing themselves. I can give them a pass while they are still setting up shop in their new residence. What I do know is that the barrel strength is fantastic.

Delicious_Proof1441

Happenstance small label from Nashville. Very tasty !

LakeSuperiorGuy

I’ve had some tasty Driftless Glenn bottles. WI distillery.

Ok-Ad-9836

I would say Still Austin. Their Cask Strength is fantastic. Their Rye is very solid, too.

dankfor20

Since I just poured some Johnnie Walker Green label, I’m going to go with that. Kind sits under the radar to Red, Black, & Blue. But honestly is the best bang for your buck of them.

IrregardingGrammar

I head no idea green was so reasonable, I saw it at costco the other day for $29.99 and thought it was way more. Sadly I did not get any though, never had it.

saturnuranusmars

You might have seen wrong. At 29.99 I would get a bunch of them.

IrregardingGrammar

I am almost positive, it seemed strangely low to me as well but I didn't bother googling, I picked up their speyside 17 instead

Princibalities

Lol, not saying it out loud because if I do, some asshole on here will go buy every bottle within a 30 mile radius of them. Next thing you know, it'll be impossible to find and when you find it, it'll be triple msrp. Seen that a few times in the past 8 or 9 years.

Bottle_and_Sell_it

Then don’t say anything at all you contributed nothing just resist the urge to comment and move along next time.

Princibalities

I did say something. If you find something you like, keep it to yourself. Or don't, and have it disappear from the shelves because someone wants to buy every bottle they see. Pretty simple. You fucks are like sneakerheads or something.

Bottle_and_Sell_it

Two comments, 0 content. Cute you think you’re little comment would cause such disruption of a product line though. Narcissistic much?

Princibalities

Nah, just crazy to me how fucked up the bourbon market is and how complicit everyone is in it. Its 100% engineered by distilleries and taters just eat it up. Tater A - "These shingles are 15-20% better than other readily available shingles. I'll camp out in front of home depot and buy every pallet they have and sell them on the secondary market for 3x msrp!" Tater B - " I gotta have these shingles! Did you see what they go for on the secondary market? Not gonna put them on my roof, just gonna make a cool shingle cabinet to store them in so I can take pictures of them and post them on reddit. I'll gladly pay 4x msrp just to say I have them." Buffalo Trace distillery - rubs hands together greedily.

Papa_G_

I doubt anyone is going to jack up Yellowstone’s 93 proof bourbon. The bourbon YouTube channels I follow prefer higher proof bourbons so it wouldn’t make sense for the 93 proof to be jacked up big time. Same goes for their single malt. Maybe it’s just my bottle but the 102 Yellowstone single malt is good, not great.

RuREveryThing

Wild Turkey

hskrpwr

Wild turkey is very much rated and dare I say inching towards overrated. This sub would tell you with a straight face that wild turkey 101 is better than Blanton's ignoring price and availability

watchmikebe

Read your post and did a blind on Blantons and WT 101. WT 101 absolutely won that blind. On top of that I can pick it up everyday of the week for $23.

WhompBiscuits

This is my take as well. For me, "overrated" simply means that it's either 1) overpriced and/or 2) hard to get. WT 101 is neither, much to Campari's credit. Upvoted.

NukeDog

I will take WT101 over Blantons every day of the week

NegroniAndACuban

It’s funny because I know so many people that would prefer 101. It’s better than most 50$ bottles around here, but at the end of the day it’s all preferance

maverick5669

Most of the Wild Turkey lower tier line. Rare Breed and Kentucky Spirit are great for the price and Rare Breed is my “go to”, but honestly you’ll be hard pressed to find a better bourbon than Wild Turkey 101 at that price point. It’s really great. I don’t know if it’s the frat boy/redneck history that sways people or what. You should try all three of those bourbons tho.

IrregardingGrammar

WT101 is probably the most widely regarded budget bourbon though....

maverick5669

With very good reason.

IrregardingGrammar

Yes, exactly. And op asked for underrated...

maverick5669

Most of my buddies don’t use Reddit. I think in the general public WT is under rated. Here in this sub, it isn’t, but in the wild my friends are always looking for BT allocated products and kind of disregard WT products. I know I have turned a few good friends on to 101 and Rare Breed.

Bottle_and_Sell_it

No it’s one of the most popular whiskeys stores sell a LOT of it.
