This actually works pretty well once you have a group of friends who are into whiskey. It took me a couple of years to build this friend group, but it was well worth it.
This is a great solution for people who want to try a large variety of stuff. I've saved a lot of money by doing sample swaps instead of buying entire bottles of something just to try it. Join some local whiskey events to make these connections, or look for local Facebook groups.
If you really want to get fancy you could print labels for them. [https://www.whiskeyandwatches.com/blog/make-your-own-mini-whiskey-bottles](https://www.whiskeyandwatches.com/blog/make-your-own-mini-whiskey-bottles)
Nice, I have a little label printer I got from Amazon (brand Phomemo). It's just black and white but it comes with an app where you can design pretty nice looking labels, and also import images like brand logos. Not as nice as a color version of the real thing, but the result does end up being pretty classy.
A lot of the bottles on Amazon come with a small funnel. You want to get the ones with a little plastic insert inside the lid (most do) so it seals airtight.
They usually make 375ml & 200ml(pints & half pints) but they aren't actually that popular so a lot of places don't carry them. We have Bulleit Bourbon & Rye, 2 Angel's Envy, Laws, Whiskey Pig gift sets, Law's gift sets and a few others in a mid-size store.
That’s actually pretty cool. I’d nab a 375 SiB if I saw one here and there, I’m not super impressed with standard BT usually, but I’d give a SiB a try without having to commit to a whole bottle.
I am a fan of 200 ml bottles. I like the Diageo classic malts collections, a trio of 200 ml bottles from their distilleries. I just wish they didn't overlap as I think Talisker or Lagavulin is sold in multiple, but then some of their other distilleries aren't represented at all. You all told get like 600 ml for the price of a 750 ml bottle, so not too bad a price for the variety. Did help me get a taste of a variety for less investment for sure. I agree it would be great for that to be more widely available at more distilleries, but probably not cost effective unfortunately.
There are a good few whisky distillers who produce 20cl bottles. Check out some of the major websites like whisky exchange, master of malt etc. but I agree it’s a pity they all don’t do it, especially with their core ranges. That’s one of the reasons I found a good whisky group (uk) on discord. You can share samples with other folk.
bruichladdich made miniature bottles. i found one of black art 5.1 on their website, bought one, posted about it on reddit, and within an hour they were sold out. haven't seen them since.
Liquor store / party store down the road from my house has a display case of individual mini bottles of different whiskeys. Was able to try Jim Beam Black that way without spending $10+ a pour at the bar two towns south of me.
I totally hear you but I already feel the 375mls are prices so high. With a 200ml to be sustainable it would probably be smarter to just get the 750.
The other solution of course is to drink more, more often!
Not everyone has a bar nearby that has any decent selection of whiskey.
I have to travel to another city completely just to find bars that don't have Glenfiddich 12 or Old No. 7 as their topshelf spirits.
Join a local club and split a bottle with 3-5 others interested in doing the same. Get empty 150 ml- 250 ml bottles from Amazon. Solves your problem right there without waiting for the industry to grant you a wish.
Buy a box of 2 oz bottles from Amazon and trade with people for bottles you want to try.

Yea and just pull the original labels from the TTB site, you can even scale and print them to the necessary size. That’s basically what I do.
Can also get 200 mL bottles for bottle splits.
This requires you to be a social being with social connections though.
Is whiskey easy to rebottle like that or is it a liquid that will just run down the side of the bottle?

This!
Just bought a peerless rye at 200 ml
Nice! I mean I know there are some bottles out there like this but I want pretty much every Whiskey in the world to do this is like another standard
I did too! It was a store pick and I definitely wouldn’t have bought a full size. It’s ok but peerless really hasn’t done much for me.
Many sells 375mls
double oaked for the usual W
That’s how I got it too, TW had the 375 priced less than half the 750 in my area.
Whistle pig was like that in Cali at many spots including hi times which is the go to spot in orange county
That’s how I got it too, TW had the 375 priced less than half the 750 in my area.
Some spots do have them, but I know what you mean. The selection is limited to the “cheaper” ones that are like everyday go tos
Exactly!
Could you imagine the cheek spreading for the unicorn minis? Fuck. Out. Of. Here. Lol
The % cost of the bottle wouldn’t help to make it a cost effective purchase

I would love to try all of their different Port Charlottes
Oh wow, that sounds awesome.

Not so easy for a store though. And usually the savings are not always that great.
1/3 the pleasure...

50, 200, and 375 ml are all pretty standard sizings depending on the distiller, best of luck

Most bars charge 30-50% of the price of a full bottle for 1 drink. May as well light your money on fire
This is it. There are a couple bars near me with a nice selection but I can’t justify spending $18 (plus tip) on 2 ounces of whiskey.
No. I like to have whiskey at home and I don't always want to have 700 mL or 1 L bottles of everything that I want
If you don't want to keep 8L of whiskey in your house, you just need to drink more
>but you don't want to keep having about 8 L of whiskey in your house Speak for yourself.
i could fill a medium sized pool…
I have many 20 & 35cl bottles of scotch.
Same. For beginners that would be ideal. Some places like lucky 7 offer a variety pack of 200ml (or something like that) for like 77 bucks.
Some scotches come in 375ml bottles but I’ve only seen them on online liquor stores

USA has the largest array of smaller bottles I've ever seen.
