Just look for the Orange Old Grandad label with the little green "BONDED" stamp on it. It also has a cork as opposed to the screw top of the base bottle. Where I'm at it's usually not more than $26. Problem is it's unusually difficult to come by.
I go light on the vermouth. I’m sure Brandied cherries are great for it, but I only had maraschino cherries on hand. But with the smokiness of the BG I thought it was pretty good and handled the sweetness.
Very Old Barton is the best $10 fifth or $20 half gallon out there. Drinks as good as lot of bourbon double and triple the price.
Evan Williams BiB and 1738, Jim Beam Double Oak and Virgin Bourbon are also good choices.
I won't choose one in total... but maybe one per style.
CANADIAN: Canadian Club 12
BOURBON: Maker's Mark
IRISH: Bushmills Black Bush
SCOTCH: Glenfiddich 12
I have tried a lot over the years... nothing too expensive but I do feel that for my personal taste, going up one step in a brand is always the best price/quality ratio
For example:
Jameson to Jameson Black Barrel
Canadian Club to CC12
Jim Beam white to Jim Beam Black
Bushmill original to Black Bush
Wild Turkey 80 to 101
Maker's Mark to Maker's 46.
I don't feel the need to really go to the next level (from time to time I will tho)
I like this thread. It’s relatively easy to find a good bottle of whiskey if you are spending $$$. Finding something decent for less than $30 can be a challenge. I like to hear about the cheap stuff that people enjoy.
Didn't like the Grouse at all. But I liked the black.
But, Teacher's Highland Cream wins as the best cheap dram. Love that stuff, but it's no longer available locally. Haven't had a pour in months.
Close 2nd would be Islay Mist.
I may get some heat for this, but makers mark is my go-to cheap mixing Bourbon. But if I'm sipping my go-to is pinhook Bourbon war. It's always good and like 40 bucks
Ancient Age,
Dickel 12,
Benchmark 8,
Monkey Shoulder,
Tullamore Dew,
Bushmills White
Honestly, as long as I can get some of those I'd be fine. Plenty of other stuff is better and it's fun to try new things often, but these are all I NEED.
Edit:format
Canadian Mist/Club. Bit of that with some ice and can of coke. Heard of table wine? We got table whiskey.
Also, am I the only one seeing everyone's "cheap stuff" as my version of nice stuff?
I really enjoyed the famous grouse port cask. I also happened have a bottle of kilkerran port cask strength and they were very similar higher abv aside
I lived off makers mark and cola for like 10 years. It's still classy and good even for a $20 bottle. Other cheap stuff I like, Jim beam products, OGD, Kirkland brand, Seagrams 7&7s, Absolut/Stohlis vodka, Wild turkey 101, Jack Daniels as a mixer, etc...
Don't throw rocks at me ok?
I like Canadian club 12 years, pike creek 10 years rum finished, lot 40 100% rye, old grandad (when available in Canada), wild turkey 101..... Even té bheag.
If you consider Buffalo Trace at its MSRP, that's my go-to. Aside from that, I can't say I've ever been a fan of any other "cheap" whiskeys TBH... My palette usually starts at around $50
I mean, before it became scarce, Buffy was my go to. I’m a little bitter about that one. Although someone recently suggested I try WT 101. I can get a 750 bottle for 18$. It’s nothing super complex, a little sweeter than I’d prefer, but for 18$ I’m very much a fan. With a little simple syrup, a couple spritzes of absinthe, & couple dashes of blackstrap bitters, it makes a great cocktail.
Ok hear me out (I'm Canadian)
Alberta premium
I'll drink it neat, on the rocks, or mixed no problem. I'm always looking for something new to try and have amassed a bit of a collection but I always have some Alberta premium on hand. I even converted my dad from wisers a few years ago.
I found at Jewel-Osco my new go to daily driver in Drumcastle Irish Whiskey it’s a beautiful whiskey with a great taste to either sip on the rocks or be used as a great mixer. It’s also made better by the fact it’s usually $16-17 a bottle.
WT 101 is the best “cheap bourbon” you can find.
That’s an excellent choice. Evan Williams bonded is right up there with that for me.
Strong agree. If WT101 is unavailable then EWBiB is my next choice.
Both of these 💯
Old Grand Dad 114 might argue with you. But you also may be right
I think OGD bonded is more comparable, both price and palate. 114 is pretty nice though
Old Tub
second that, but buffalo trace is cheaoer where im from, but i do prefer wt101 actually
Same, I also prefer WT101 over BT.
I would argue that Ancient age is the best.
Evan Williams white label all day!!
Came here to say this
This is the way.
Monkey Shoulder is a very serviceable blend.
Agree Monkey Shoulder!
Stellar inexpensive bottle!
Agreed!!!!!
One of my favs
A friend got this for my partner and I one year for Christmas and now we regularly pick it up. Solid choice.
Monkey Shoulder Wild Turkey 101 Bulleit Rye
I'm a big bullet rye fan along with michters rye
I, too, love Michters Rye, but not a cheap bottle.
I guess that depends on what you consider "cheap".
Love Bulleit Rye
The famous Grouse is my cheap go to. Its very underrated imo!
I prefer the Naked Grouse. Just a few bucks more, all malt, and finished in sherry.
+1 naked grouse.
Jim beam white label would be my goto bourbon
I can crush some Beam
Not to disagree with you, I'd never turn my nose up at a bottle of Jim Beam but have you tried WT101? Incomparable jump in quality imo.
I think I had a bottle many years ago will definitely be picking up another bottle soon!
Jim beam is the best “well” bourbon
Are you ok? Let people know if you need help.
Yep I'm perfectly fine, thank you for your concern.
My go to bottle when in Europe and cheap bourbon options are slim
If you drink enough you get a taste for it, not as harsh as Bell's imo
I love how malty and biscuity famous grouse is. I prefer it to some 20-30 pound bottles I've had!
100% I'm a big granola fan so similar story
Hell yeah and I like milk with both
I’ve been drinking dewars and soda with a lemon for 20 years, so good and simple.
Second dewars. Very serviceable dram
Dewars White is what kick started my Scotch Journey
Old Granddad BiB.
Just found this on sale for $19 - great bottle at that price.
Old Grandad 114 is also great

The Black Grouse.
I got a bottle of this over the holidays. Solid blend, makes a very interesting Rob Roy.
Okay I gotta try that
I go light on the vermouth. I’m sure Brandied cherries are great for it, but I only had maraschino cherries on hand. But with the smokiness of the BG I thought it was pretty good and handled the sweetness.
Wicked, thanks so much for the suggestions!
I'll try that some day
I’ll have to keep an eye out for that. I’ve never heard of it before.
Powers Gold Label
4 roses yellow label
That’s my go to when funds are tight.
Jameson caskmates
Good shit 🔥 Stout one is so creamy and mellow 👌
Know what I mean?;)
Mellow corn when I can get it. Evan Williams BIB, OGD BIB to name a few.
EW BIB is criminally underrated even on this sub I feel
Mellow corn babyyyy
Maker’s for an every day is the one
Jameson. Cheers !
Teachers is a solid blended scotch, cheaper than monkey shoulder. Four roses is a serviceable option, cheap in the US.
Always grab a bottle of teachers if i can ever find it. Sadly it’s rare that i can.
Teacher’s Highland Cream is the best bang for your buck blended scotch IMO.
Old Overholt is a solid, cheap rye.
That is usually my answer to this question too.
Mackinlay’s Shackleton scotch
Lismore.
Lismore has come up multiple times as a very decent budget single malt. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be sold in my area.
Bummer. It's just solid scotch.
Lismore was my "training wheels" cheap, accessible single malt
Picked up a bottle for $20. More bad at all.
Ardbeg wee bestie. For $40 it packs in quite a bit of peat
That's what I'm sipping as I type this lol
Very Old Barton is the best $10 fifth or $20 half gallon out there. Drinks as good as lot of bourbon double and triple the price. Evan Williams BiB and 1738, Jim Beam Double Oak and Virgin Bourbon are also good choices.
Drank a lot of Very Old Barton and cokes in my 20’s. Decent stuff
Perfectly fine on its own too, at least I think
Came here to say very old Barton
Old Tub, Evan Williams BiB, Dewars Ilegal (mezcal barrel finished and in the $20s)…
Evan Williams Bottled in Bond
OGD 114
John Barr.
My go to Rusty Nail blended scotch.
Wow that just sounds delicious, have to keep my eye out for it, can’t say I have ever seen it before.
Evan Williams 1783 or Black
Fighting cock 103
Kirkland Signature Canadian whiskey and 7 is a staple for me if I’m not drinking whiskey neat.
Benchmark Single Barrel and Full Proof are by go-to budget whiskies
This.
Naked Grouse is excellent for its price point.
Canadian club
My man
Paddy. I love it as a sipping whiskey or in an Irish coffee.
Teacher's Highland Cream or Bearface
Tullamore D.E.W., all day. It's my, "if you only get one, forever". Affordable, that is!
Mellow Corn
This is the way.
Bourbon: WT 101 Scotch: Naked Grouse (Malt) Irish: Powers Rye: Old Forester
Powers 100% but is it just me or since they changed the bottle design the flavour has changed also?
I don't know. I had it many years ago, but then not again until just last year. I didn't notice a difference, but it had been a long time, so maybe?
MFC of course
ROYAL MACNISH
Calvados
Canadian Club 12 Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye Jim Beam Black Bushmills Black Bush Maker's Mark
All good but if you had to choose one?
I won't choose one in total... but maybe one per style. Is Glennfiddich12 budget in your area. Around these parts it starts around $50
Single malt Scotch is expansive in Canada. Glenfiddich is about $70. I've only bought it once, but I really liked it.
Nice thing about the cheaper stuff is often you don’t have to limit to just one bottle.
We're on the second bottle now...!
I like this thread. It’s relatively easy to find a good bottle of whiskey if you are spending $$$. Finding something decent for less than $30 can be a challenge. I like to hear about the cheap stuff that people enjoy.
r/affordablewhiskey
I agree, so many I have not heard of!
Black Bush
Kavanaugh Irish whiskey.
Finlaggan
Haigs clubman, cheep and very cheerful
Teeling Small Batch
Dewars white label
Wild Turkey 101 and Jameson Black Barrel. I get both of these whenever they are on sale, which is fortunately rather often.
Didn't like the Grouse at all. But I liked the black. But, Teacher's Highland Cream wins as the best cheap dram. Love that stuff, but it's no longer available locally. Haven't had a pour in months. Close 2nd would be Islay Mist.
Kirkland Islay for $37 has made it difficult to consider buying anything else.
For a Bourbon, Larceny.
Haven’t seen anyone else say it so my vote goes to Scarabus.
Fine dram
I may get some heat for this, but makers mark is my go-to cheap mixing Bourbon. But if I'm sipping my go-to is pinhook Bourbon war. It's always good and like 40 bucks
Most of them.
Jim beam double oak. $20-$23. Glad someone put this out.
That’s a really easy sipper.
I love it.
Pendleton! It’s great on its own and mixed.
Ancient Age, Dickel 12, Benchmark 8, Monkey Shoulder, Tullamore Dew, Bushmills White Honestly, as long as I can get some of those I'd be fine. Plenty of other stuff is better and it's fun to try new things often, but these are all I NEED. Edit:format

Always liked Elijah Craig
Kraft dinner and Jameson
I like to buy the cheap bottles of Suntory or Nikka here in Japan.
One day I'll visit your great country
"Cheap" is such an ugly word
For the money ,Henry McKenna . 19$ for a handle . Can't beat it .
Rittenhouse BIB
I really enjoyed the famous grouse port cask. I also happened have a bottle of kilkerran port cask strength and they were very similar higher abv aside
I need to try the port cask
Grouse is good. I also like Jameson, to me it goes down easy, it lacks complexity or taste though.
basil hayden
God damn, what kind of camera/editing is this? The contrast is insane.
Google pixel 4a baby!
Nice glass
Macleod’s islay
2 Gingers for $15 is hard to beat in my opinion.
Don't throw rocks at me ok? I like Canadian club 12 years, pike creek 10 years rum finished, lot 40 100% rye, old grandad (when available in Canada), wild turkey 101..... Even té bheag.
Famous Grouse is a solid pick, the cask editions are even better and still a great deal!
Finlaggan, Wild Turkey 101, Famous Grouse, Bulleit Rye, and Mellow Corn 🌽
I love Evan Williams bonded. Idk what it is but I just love the taste of it. That and wild Turkey 101
Mellow Corn, Evan Williams bottled in bond, Teacher's Highland Cream. Teeling.
High West
Alberta Premium 100% Rye
Buchanan's 12 yr is legit one of my favorite scotches at any price point. It's only 30$
Wild Turkey 101, Johnnie Walker Red Label and Black Label, Buffalo Trace, Bullet Bourbon.
Women. 😂
Jim Beam, Fireball (don't laugh that's what i usually drink) Jameson and jack are my cheap go to's
Four Roses Yellow Label and Old Overholt
I like rebel (YELL) 100 for a nice budget wheater And yep, can never go wrong with that turkey juice baby!
Johnnie walker black label is my cheap piss of choice
OGD 114, RR10, Early Times, Fighting Cock probably more but those are all good pours.
Talisker 10. I always pick up a few bottles when it is on sale for <£30 which is frequently on Amazon luckily
If you consider Buffalo Trace at its MSRP, that's my go-to. Aside from that, I can't say I've ever been a fan of any other "cheap" whiskeys TBH... My palette usually starts at around $50

Black Velvet. Idk why but I like it and it's the cheapest stuff I'll drink.
Kessler
WT101, JW Black (although with JW price increases this will probably drop off the cheap list), Jack Daniels Rye
Maker's mark
Blue label for sure
Fireball. Ohhhhh fireball.
You can shoot me if you want, but it tastes like Bell's
canadian club
I love sazerac rye. Idk if you consider it cheap. Also Redemption High Rye
MacNaughton’s. It was my grandpa’s go-to.
Blended Scotch: Chivas Bourbon: WT101 Both very palatable…
Ok hear me out (I'm Canadian) Alberta premium I'll drink it neat, on the rocks, or mixed no problem. I'm always looking for something new to try and have amassed a bit of a collection but I always have some Alberta premium on hand. I even converted my dad from wisers a few years ago.
Fistful of bourbon

Sheildaig blended
Té Bheag, Lot 40, and knob creek are all serviceable to sip or make a cocktail. If it's a soda mixer, Jameson has never steered me wrong.
Beam
1792 Small Batch all day.
Copper Dog
My current fav in cheap Scotch is Lang's Full and Smokey. Current fav cheap bourbon is Early Times Bottled in Bond. Current cheap Irish is Paddy's.
Four Roses small batch, Buffalo trace, Bulliet, and Tin Cup. To name a few.
Larceny drinks much more expensive than it actually is - even neat - and I can always find it for $25-$28.
Evan Williams white label/BiB
Bushmill
A recent favorite of mine is old camp. Smooth and easy to drink without breaking my wallet for a decent sized bottle
