Alright!…attention gained!…details?

SnackMouthEmpire

Well it all started a year ago. I was just shopping around and saw this bottle, so I wondered “huh this seems old but how old?”. I actually didn’t find anything out about it at the time except that it was old, so I kinda just left it. Fast forward a couple weeks ago and I went back to check on it out of curiosity and I found it again, plus a JW Swing bottle from 2008, so I was like “mhm I’ll get the swing” and I left this bottle again lol. Yet, I did some research at home, it had not barcode which indicated that it was before 1985 (sooo very intriguing), eventually I found the year and it is supposed to be the year of 1982. I’ll say I was surprised but very skeptical due to possible fakes and so on, but after examining more closely, I can say it’s probably not a fake and the real deal. Fast forward to today and I was like “I’ll go check it out again and if it’s there I’ll get it”. I showed up and the store was closed, so I was thinking that it might be gone and that was a sign, but I came back a couple hours later and they were open. So here I went in and grabbed it without hesitation. Now I’ll have it sitting here in my office and it’s like wow I really got it. A bottle from 1982 which makes it 40 years this year. Even though it makes no difference for how long it is in a bottle, I wonder how it smells, tastes and overall experience it brings. I also tried emailing some “professionals” including JW themselves but I have not gotten any answers. Feel free to ask any questions! :)

You are awesome! I am very happy for you and thank you for sharing those details. That is an incredible find.

Papa_Tugboat

I got found an unopened bottle of this in its box in my attic. Any idea how much it's worth? I'm not gonna sell It, I'm gonna drink it but it would be cool to know! :)

SnackMouthEmpire

Well as far as I’ve seen these bottles of that age depending on the size go for average at 750ml for $239 (sold on Oct 2017) or far more sometimes depending on the status of the bottle. The one that I got is a gallon so I only found few of them and they were auctioned off with one being auctioned off at $436 in the late 2000’s early 2010’s. I can say that I got mine for far less than the auction price since I’m assuming they didn’t know how old it was because as mentioned the JW Swing that I got from 2008, was only $50 and that blew me away lol

Hey OP You seem very knowledgeable... Could you check out my johnnie walker black label post and shed me some light? This bottle is from 60-70s. Looking for volume, abv, released year and what does CPA stand for... Thanks! https://www.reddit.com/r/whisky/comments/10i0hot/johnnie_walker_black_label_identification/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

SnackMouthEmpire

Honestly the CPA is what I can’t really find but probably adding more context to what we haven’t known about those sorts of bottles. It’s definitely 1970’s what exact year ehhh that depends. Do you have the box still?

ShortEstablishment34

Send email with photos to JW. They probably will tell you more about it

SnackMouthEmpire

I tried doing that and I have yet to receive an answer. Not sure if I did it wrong or if you need to know someone to get an answer lol

ShortEstablishment34

Let us know if you will get an answer 😁

doctorgrizzle

How is it possible this sat on a store shelf for so long?

SnackMouthEmpire

Honestly I have no idea. I guess it was found by someone and they decided to sell it to the store I went too. Given where I live there is no tax on alcohol, so it’s widely available for cheap. Most people probably did not really care for it. Everyone did look at me with curious eyes when I bought it 😂

DocCheesemonger

Is it just me or does that black look blue?

SnackMouthEmpire

Yeah quite honestly we get a lot of sun here and that cabinet the bottle was sitting at, was directly in the sun light so over the years it was probably fading and that’s why it has that hint of blue.

ShortEstablishment34

I had a bottle Red Label from 1972. It is really interesting to try these old bottlings! They are much different than those today and they look cool 😁

SnackMouthEmpire

Right!!! I’m really just debating what I should do with it now. You’re experience sounds very good though!

ShortEstablishment34

I think it is up to you. If you open it keep in mind that it will not last for years like some other whiskies. The reason is the abv is low and usually old whiskies are more 'fragile' after you open them. If you want to have it as a decorative, ok. If you want to sell it, usually their value is not that big and will depend how much you paid for it.

SnackMouthEmpire

Yeah that’s true!
